Sunday's Essentials
March 11, 2018

Game of the Night - Cavaliers at Lakers, 9:05 ET

Selection Sunday will have its time. We?ll see whether this new format of announcing teams in alphabetical order works out ? I?m keeping an open mind since they?re going to treat it like the NBA Draft lottery with the golf whispers as we work down the list.

?Look, Chuck, there?s Gonzaga. This means Georgia did in fact miss the tournament.?

?Well, it?s a good thing since they don?t have a coach!?

Could be good stuff. It has a shot to be better than the thud of seeing that final bracket unveiled to know if you?re in it. Keep an open mind.

Regardless of how it goes down, get the kids to bed early and save the bracket work for halftime of this Sunday night showcase.

Normally, a disjointed Cleveland team getting together to face a Lakers team that isn?t going to make the playoffs wouldn?t be can?t miss-TV other than seeing whether the Cavs can handle business as 2-point favorites, but an overflow of drama adds to the allure. We?ve got reunions everywhere you look, not to mention pandering.

Lakers fans have their chance to show LeBron James in-game love after the Clippers got their shot in a 116-102 win on Friday night, snapping Cleveland?s two-game winning streak.

Isaiah Thomas will get his chance too. It?s not clear whether there are any hard feelings between the two, but Thomas obviously knows that James was notified of the deal that sent him out of town before it was consummated.

After being given up on after a few weeks on on-court action because the Cavs had no choice but to move on from something that clearly wasn?t working, he?s looked much improved coming off the bench for L.A. Thomas proclaimed that he had his powers back after playing his first game in the purple and gold and opened the month with a 29-point outburst, but he?s shot 34 percent since, going 21-for-62 over a four-game span, including 5-for-22 from 3-point range.

It?s likely that Thomas will be aggressive off the bench given the opposition and his improved state of health, but that won?t be a good thing for L.A. if he remains in a slump.

For Larry Nance, Jr. Jordan Clarkson, Jr., it?s a chance to go at former teammates that they?ve learned with and worked against in practice throughout the majority of their pro careers. The times Nance gives James a break in squaring off Julius Randle in this game?s most defining individual matchup will be vital.

James is helping turn Nance into a formidable offensive weapon simply by playing to his strengths. The new Cavs big man is averaging 15.6 points and 11 rebounds in March and has done a nice job staying out of foul trouble since he?s playing center whenever he?s on the floor. That should give Randle and Brook Lopez an advantage in the post since they know Nance has to be cautious.

Randle has unquestionably been the most consistent Lakers performer with Brandon Ingram sidelined. An improved shot selection has him averaging about 20 points and nearly nine rebounds since Jan. 31. Can he take whatever weaknesses Nance he?s exposed against Nance in countless practices to live action and deliver a win? The Lakers are 6-2 since the All-Star break thanks, more than anything else, to his steady development.

Ironically, most Lakers fans would love to see James playing his role next season, which should make for an interesting atmosphere. Seriously, who is Jack Nicholson going to be cheering for come fourth quarter?

James is averaging 30 points, 8.8 rebounds and 9.2 assists in March and is just missing out on a triple-double since the All-Star break. He?s shot a tremendous 58 percent and has only worked one back-to-back, so he?ll be fresh for this one.

Ante Zizic is due for some extended run given the absence of Cedi Osman, which combined with Rodney Hood being sidelined due to a lower back injury, thrusts Jeff Green into the starting lineup and really ties Tyronn Lue?s hands in terms of depth. Kyle Korver figures to get a lot of run as only eight should play significant minutes.

Clarkson scored 21 points in his Staples return in Friday?s 116-102, his largest output since joining the Cavs in early February. He?s averaged over 13 points per game and shot the ball well, providing an upgrade from what Thomas brought to the table since he?s a much better defender.

Clarkson gets to go at Lonzo Ball, who has participated in L.A.?s last six games since returning from a knee issue and has averaged roughly 13 points, six boards, six assists and three steals. The Lakers are 4-2 in those games, but one can argue they would?ve beaten the Nuggets on Friday night if not for Ball?s 1-for-8 3-point shooting.

The total opened at 228.5, in part because the over is 8-2-1 over the Lakers? last 11 games. Cleveland?s defensive issues are well-documented, but the low-side has actually prevailed in their last three games. Over their last seven, the Cavs have surrendered an average of 111 points per game.

These teams looked different when the Cavs beat L.A. 121-112 on Dec. 14 but surpassed that total (221). Ingram was available and led the Lakers with 26 points, while Randle was coming off the bench and played just over 21 minutes. Kevin Love led Cleveland with 28 points but is still out with a broken hand, though he?s hoping to return sooner than expected. There isn?t much to take from that matchup or the fact that Cleveland has won the last seven meetings between the teams other than the obvious. Cleveland has been good and L.A. has been a doormat.

Things are slowly changing, however, as this 2-point spread would indicate.

Injury report

James Harden is considered doubtful against Dallas as Houston wraps up a stretch of road games in seven of eight. After their 17-game winning streak was snapped in Toronto, it appears that the Rockets are going to give the MVP frontrunner a breather since he?s been playing at a high level despite knee soreness and the Rockets find themselves in a back-to-back situation with San Antonio coming into town on Monday night.

They?ll have a few days off before hosting the Clippers on Thursday before hitting the road to face the Pelicans, Timberwolves and Blazers. This looks like a well-earned night off for Harden, but does expose the Rockets to an upset since the pressure to keep a winning streak going has dissipated and the Mavs have been playing well. The number opened at Rockets -12.5.

Jaylen Brown has been put in concussion protocol after taking a nasty spill on Thursday, injuring his neck. The Celtics host Indiana, which got back Darren Collison on Friday but brought him off the bench, keeping Cory Joseph in the lineup for now.

Anthony Davis, still nursing a tender ankle, is considered a game-time decision for tonight?s big home date with the surging Jazz. Jim Eichenhofer of Pelicans.com reported that Davis felt a lot better and has been upgraded to questionable. Utah is up 2.5 games on New Orleans in the tightly-packed Western Conference and the Pels stand no chance against Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors without him, so I?d expect him to play. The game was off the board at most places but some early numbers listed the Jazz as a 2.5-point road favorite.

Atlanta point guard Dennis Schroder is questionable with an elbow strain as the Hawks host Chicago. With backup Malcolm Delaney sidelined due to an ankle issue, Isaiah Taylor could be in for major minutes despite playing with a tweaked ankle. The Bulls opened as a 3-point underdog, but the line has come down to 2.5 at most shops.

Raptors rout Knicks to roll to 8th straight victory
March 11, 2018

LOS ANGELES (AP) Julius Randle had a career-high 36 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists, and the Los Angeles Lakers auditioned for LeBron James' favor in free agency with a 127-113 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday night.

Isaiah Thomas had 20 points, nine assists and five rebounds against his former teammates as the Lakers roared away from James and the defending Eastern Conference champions in the second half. With its sixth win in eight games overall, Los Angeles (30-36) emphatically snapped a seven-game losing streak against Cleveland.

James had 24 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Cavs, who have lost four of six after getting swept at Staples Center by the Clippers and Lakers.

Starting center Larry Nance Jr. had 24 points and eight rebounds, and Jordan Clarkson added four points in their first game against the Lakers since they were traded for Thomas and Channing Frye on Feb. 8.

Brook Lopez scored 22 points for the Lakers, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 20.

RAPTORS 132, KNICKS 106

NEW YORK (AP) - Jonas Valanciunas scored 17 points, Kyle Lowry had 16 and the Toronto Raptors kept right on rolling after a big win two nights earlier, beating the New York Knicks for their season-high eighth straight victory.

The Raptors had no letdown after edging NBA-leading Houston on Friday in a matchup of the No. 1 teams in each conference, leading much of the game even with All-Star DeMar DeRozan shooting just 4 for 16 for nine points.

But seven Raptors finished in double figures in Toronto's 15th win in 16 games. The Raptors fell one point shy of their highest total of the season, set in a victory over Cleveland on Jan. 11.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 25 and Luke Kornet had 18 as the Knicks dropped their seventh straight game and 15th in the last 16.

PACERS 99, CELTICS 97

BOSTON (AP) - Victor Oladipo scored 27 points, then committed a dead-ball offensive foul with 1.5 seconds left that gave Boston a shot to win the game at the buzzer, but the Indiana Pacers held on to beat the depleted Celtics.

Myles Turner scored 19 points, including the game-winning basket with 21 seconds to play, and added 10 rebounds for Indiana, who survived the crazy ending to win for the fifth time in six games.

Boston led by 10 at halftime before point guard Kyrie Irving left the game with a sore left knee, joining absent big man Al Horford, who was home sick, and Jaylen Brown, who is in the concussion protocol.

After Boston rallied to tie 95-all with 37 seconds left, Turner gave the Pacers the lead again and, after Terry Rozier's miss, Indiana hit a pair of foul shots to take a four-point lead. With fans heading for the exits, Tatum hit a seemingly meaningless layup to cut the deficit to two points with only 1.5 seconds left. But before the ball could be inbounded, Oladipo was whistled when his elbow caught Marcus Morris in the face. A review confirmed the call.

Boston inbounded the ball to Rozier, who took a long 2-pointer that bounced off the near side of the rim.

TIMBERWOLVES 109, WARRIORS 103

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Karl-Anthony Towns helped Minnesota stop a season-longest three-game losing streak with 31 points and 16 rebounds, and the Timberwolves powered their way past Golden State down the stretch to hand the Warriors their second straight defeat without Stephen Curry.

Kevin Durant had 39 points and 12 rebounds for the Warriors, who left Curry at home from this road trip to rest an injured right ankle and lost 125-108 to Portland on Friday.

Andrew Wiggins added 23 points for the Timberwolves, who lost twice on the road to the defending champion Warriors earlier this season by a combined 37 points. Curry had a collective plus-36 rating over those two games.

Klay Thompson had 21 points for the Warriors, but he went 3 for 12 from 3-point range.

ROCKETS 105, MAVERICKS 82

DALLAS (AP) - Eric Gordon scored 26 points and Chris Paul had 24 points and 12 assists as the Houston Rockets, playing without James Harden, beat the Dallas Mavericks.

The Rockets rested Harden because of a sore left knee, but had plenty of 3-point shooting even without their MVP candidate. Houston, which had its 17-game win streak snapped Friday in Toronto, broke the game open in the third quarter by hitting their first six 3s of the period amid a 22-10 run. The Rockets finished 17-for-45 from deep.

The Rockets moved 1 + games ahead of Golden State for the best record in the NBA after the Warriors lost to Minnesota earlier Sunday.

Dwight Powell led the Mavericks with 20 points, one short of his career high, on 9-of-11 shooting.

NUGGETS 130, KINGS 104

DENVER (AP) - Nikola Jokic had 20 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his seventh triple-double of the season, Gary Harris added 21 points and the Denver Nuggets cruised past the Sacramento Kings.

Denver led by as many as 36 points while staying in the thick of the playoff chase. The Nuggets now enter a difficult stretch in their schedule - eight of their next nine games are on the road.

Buddy Hield scored 18 points, while former Nuggets player Kosta Koufos chipped in 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Kings, who play Monday night in Oklahoma City.

BULLS 129, HAWKS 122

ATLANTA (AP) - Zach LaVine scored 21 points, including four free throws in the final 17 seconds to stop Atlanta's comeback, and the Chicago Bulls beat the injury-depleted Hawks.

Bobby Portis also had 21 points for Chicago.

The Hawks, already playing without injured point guard Dennis Schroder, lost Kent Bazemore to a right knee sprain and Jaylen Morris to a left ankle injury in the second quarter. Taurean Prince led Atlanta with a career-high 38 points. Mike Muscala also set a career high with 19 points.

JAZZ 116, PELICANS 99

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Ricky Rubio had 30 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, and Utah overcame Anthony Davis' first career triple-double for a victory over the New Orleans Pelicans that extended the Jazz's winning streak to six.

Donovan Mitchell scored 27 points, including 15 during the last 3:08 of the third quarter to put Utah in front for good in what could be an important victory in a tightly packed race for one of the Western Conference's final five playoff spots. Rudy Gobert added 19 points and 16 rebounds, and Joe Ingles scored 20 for Utah, which has won 11 straight on the road.

Davis had 25 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high 10 blocks in his return from a sprained left ankle that sidelined him for one game. Jrue Holiday had 18 points and 10 assists for the Pelicans, but missed 12 of 19 shots, turned the ball over four times and struggled defensively.

76ERS 120, NETS 97

NEW YORK (AP) - Joel Embiid scored 21 points, Robert Covington added 19, and the Philadelphia 76ers routed the Brooklyn Nets.

Dario Saric scored 18 points and Ben Simmons had 11 points, six assists and six rebounds for the 76ers, who were able to avenge a disappointing loss to the Nets at Barclays Center in January.

D'Angelo Russell had 26 points for the Nets, who have lost 13 of their last 15 games.

NBA Betting Roadmap: Raptors primed to do some serious damage in playoffs
Al McMordie

Toronto has won its last eight games, and owns the third best record in the NBA at 49-17.

The Toronto Raptors served notice to the rest of the NBA when they defeated Houston on Friday to snap the Rockets' 17-game win streak. Toronto has won its last eight games, and owns the third best record in the NBA at 49-17. With just a month left in the season there are several open questions such as which team will own the best record and which Western Conference teams will be left out of the playoffs.

Let's take a look at the NBA's upcoming week.

Spread Watch

With apologies to the Houston Rockets, who have lost just once in their past 19 games, the Portland Trail Blazers are the hottest team in the NBA right now. Terry Stotts' crew is on a nine-game win streak - including a 17-point blowout of Golden State on Friday - which has catapulted them to the third seed in the Western Conference. For the season, Portland is 40-26, and is also 36-26-4 ATS.

The Blazers are even hot in Las Vegas, as they've covered their last six games, and are 16-5-1 ATS since January 18.

This week, Portland will finish its current five-game home stand with tilts against Miami, Cleveland and Detroit, before hitting the road on Sunday to take on the Los Angeles Clippers. Will Portland's hot streak continue? We certainly believe they have a heckuva chance to win their three home games, and especially like them in Monday's match-up vs. Miami. Portland has won and covered four straight in the series and, even better, falls into a 'momentum' system of mine which is 89-36 ATS since 1993. That angle plays on certain home teams off back-to-back blowout home wins, when playing an opponent also off a home win. Lay the points with Portland on Monday.

Total Watch

The Memphis Grizzlies have lost their last 17 games in a row, which is the league's longest losing streak since the 76ers opened up the 2015-16 season with 18 defeats. And it seems as if that's perfectly fine, as management no doubt wants to win the race to the bottom in order to have the best opportunity to snare the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft Lottery.

Indeed, Memphis chose to rest its best player, Marc Gasol, for the third time in nine games in Saturday's 114-80 loss at Dallas. Thus, Memphis is turning to guys like JaMychal Green, Ben McLemore and Dillon Brooks for offensive production. So, it's not surprising to find that the Grizz' offense failed to get more than 80 points in either of its two previous games. Memphis has now gone Under the total in six of its last seven games and, without significant offensive talent on the floor, will be an excellent candidate to look at to play the Under the rest of this season.

This week, Memphis will host Milwaukee, Chicago and Denver. We like the Monday game vs. the Bucks to go Under the total, as Milwaukee is also on a 15-6 Under run and these two teams have gone 9-4-1 Under the total in head-to-head matchups since 2011.

Injury Watch

The San Antonio Spurs are mired in their worst season since 1996-97. That year, David Robinson missed all but six games due to back and foot injuries. Similarly, this season, San Antone's best player, Kawhi Leonard, has only appeared in nine games due to a quadriceps injury.

The result is that the Spurs have struggled mightily when playing on the road, and also against the league's better teams. Indeed, San Antonio's streak of 20 consecutive winning seasons on the road (an NBA record) came to an end on Saturday when it lost its 21st road game at Oklahoma City. But if there was a silver lining in that loss to OKC, it came in the form of a report by ESPN's Lisa Salters during the TV broadcast that there is the possibility that Leonard will return to action this Thursday, when the Spurs will host the New Orleans Pelicans.

If Leonard is in the line-up, I would pull the trigger on San Antonio on Thursday, given that it will be playing with double revenge from two losses suffered earlier this season to the Pels and the Spurs are 19-9 ATS at home in the regular season when playing with double revenge.

Schedule Watch

This Saturday, the Phoenix Suns will host the Golden State Warriors. Normally, this would be a game which wouldn't excite many NBA bettors but I've had this game circled for four weeks - ever since the Warriors thrashed the Suns, 129-83, on February 12. I will always look at a team which lost to its opponent by 44+ points in the season's previous meeting, as those teams have covered the point spread 60% since 1990.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with 60%, but we can significantly improve our angle if we solely focus on going against opponents that aren't succeeding against the point spread in the current season. If we just fade teams whose ATS win percentage isn't .489 or higher then our angle zooms to a perfect 12-0 ATS since 1990. And that's the situation on Saturday, as Golden State is an awful 28-39 ATS on the season, including 0-6 ATS its last six. Take Phoenix plus the points.

Game of the Night - Heat at Trail Blazers, 10:35 ET, ESPN

At this time last season, the Heat were in the midst of fighting back from an awful 11-30 start, entering March 12 on a 21-4 run as they visited Indiana. They lost, which ended up costing them a playoff bid.

That?s a little dramatic, but true. The Heat ended up missing the playoffs on a tie-breaker with the Bulls after finishing one game behind the Pacers. They got all the way back to 41-41 and fell painfully short of testing themselves in the postseason, leading Dion Waiters to write that the rest of the East was lucky he had time to put pen to paper in the Players? Tribune.

Waiters is sidelined, which gives the ?17-?18 Heat a much different feel than they had last season, when they went from doormat to unlikely second-half power behind a collective approach to compensate for no All-Stars. Waiters was the face of the unlikely run, playing at a level that had eluded him in the pros. With Dwyane Wade gone and Chris Bosh shelved, last season was about hitting the reset button.

This season, there are expectations.

As the Heat take the court in Portland to open a three-game road trip and a stretch where they?ll play five of seven outside of south Florida, they?ll be looking to avoid a slide that would cost them a chance at homecourt advantage in the Eastern Conference. Miami has lost seven straight road games but hasn?t played poorly. The team is 4-0-1 against the spread over their last five setbacks and has begun to hit its stride.

Since trading for Wade, the Heat is 7-5 straight up but 9-1-2 against the number, which is indicative of trending in a positive direction.

Following this stretch, Miami gets to finish the season with six of eight games at home, so this week is critical to staying afloat. Portland has the NBA?s longest winning streak, so the Heat will get arguably their toughest remaining regular-season road test right out of the gate.

They?ll be shorthanded in chasing an upset, missing center Hassan Whiteside due to hip pain that kept him out of Saturday?s win over Washington. Wade, nursing a hamstring strain, will sit the first part of the trip out in the hopes that he?ll be able to play later in the week with the Kings and Lakers on tap.

The Heat have a better record and more breathing room in their pursuit of the playoffs than they did last season, coming into the week seventh in the Eastern Conference, a half-game up on Milwaukee and only one game behind emerging rival Philadelphia. The Heat have defeated the 76ers in each of the last two weeks and are in a pack separating the No. 3 and No. 8 seeds by 3.5 games. Detroit and Charlotte still have postseason aspirations but have little room for error since they?re over five games behind with 15 to go.

Barring a complete collapse, Miami will be in the playoff mix. It reacquired Wade to play in a wing rotation utilizing Josh Richardson, Tyler Johnson and Justise Winslow, so they?ll be fine with Waiters out the rest of the way following ankle surgery. Kelly Olynyk has been an upgrade from Josh McRoberts and rookie Bam Adebayo has had an impact off the bench, so the Heat are deeper, but head coach Erik Spoelstra seemed to be getting more consistency out of last season?s team by this point in the season than he has this year.

In fairness, there have been injuries to contend with and Wade was just brought back into the mix, dropped into the equation to create a fairly unique situation. Where else would you see a player being trusted in crunch time immediately upon arrival? With everyone in the crowd already wearing your jersey?

We?ll see who steps up with Wade and Whiteside out, but the expectation here is that it will be Goran Dragic and Richardson who emerge most responsible for success or failure on this trip. Winslow is the x-factor, no longer on the injury report and in the midst of the best run of an inconsistent, injury-riddled third season. Since Feb. 24, he?s helped Miami go 6-2 and has been a tremendous asset at both ends, averaging 11.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and shooting 52.9 percent.

Winslow has made 12 of his last 22 3-pointers, which means opposing wings can?t play off him like the scouting report tells them to. If that continues, it could be a game-changer.

The Trail Blazers are hoping that a win over the Warriors can further fuel a growing confidence that this team is finally ready to emerge in the West, relatively speaking. While Golden State and Houston are still top dogs, Portland?s run since Valentine?s Day has put them in position to win the Northwest and make this a memorable season. They?ve certainly made backers happy, cashing in 10 of their last 12. At home in the Moda Center, the Trail Blazers have won and covered five straight to extend a 14-1 SU run that has seen them cover 12 times.

Damian Lillard is averaging over 31 points and six assists since February began, shooting 46.7 from 3-point range. Despite his exploits, improved defense has been the key to this run of success for Portland, which has held five of nine opponents to 100 or fewer points during its current win streak. The under has connected in six of its last eight.

Portland won the lone regular-season meeting between these teams 102-95 on Dec. 13, overcoming Lillard shooting just 1-for-6 from 3-point range thanks to a 28-point outburst from C.J. McCollum. Whiteside missed that game too, while Waiters shot 6-for-18. The Blazers have won four straight in the series and haven?t lost to the Heat at home since 2013.

Injury report

James Harden is expected to return at home against San Antonio after missing last night's win in Dallas as Houston wrapped up a stretch of road games in seven of eight. After their 17-game winning streak was snapped in Toronto, Houston got out to an early lead against the Mavs, lost it entirely and then dominated the second half thanks to a flurry of 3-pointers that allowed them to coast down the stretch.

San Antonio has ruled out LaMarcus Aldridge due to knee soreness and won't have Kawhi Leonard back in the mix until later in the week at the earliest. Manu Ginobili is getting a rest night, so the Spurs will be short-handed against their Southwest Division rival.

The Thunder looked sharp in taking down San Antonio on Saturday night, but saw Steven Adams suffer an ankle sprain in the third quarter and may not have him available against the Kings. With Terrance Ferguson out with a concussion, OKC's depth will be tested against Sacramento. Jerami Grant was an x-factor in the win over the Spurs and should again see an enhanced role. The Kings have center Willie Cauley-Stein back in the mix, but talented young forward Skal Labissiere is questionable with a hip injury.

Memphis is likely to have Marc Gasol back against the visiting Bucks after resting him this weekend, but guards Tyreke Evans, Andrew Harrison and Mario Chalmers remain sidelined. Forward Jarell Martin is questionable with a foot issue.

Harden's big 3rd quarter helps Rockets beat Spurs 109-93
March 12, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden scored 16 of his 28 points in the third quarter to allow the Houston Rockets to build a huge lead and sail to an easy 109-93 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night.

The NBA's leading scorer took a little while to get going a night after sitting out against Dallas with a sore left knee and had just 12 points at halftime.

Despite his slow start, the Rockets had a comfortable lead in the third and were still up by 13 after a basket by San Antonio's Dejounte Murray with about eight minutes left in the quarter. It was then that Harden took over, scoring the next eight points to start a 16-4 run that extended the lead to 82-57 with about 3 1/2 minutes left in the third and had coach Gregg Popovich calling for a timeout.

Harden had a 3-pointer and made three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt to propel that spurt. He didn't return in the fourth quarter with the game in hand.

The Spurs, who were without leading scorer LaMarcus Aldridge, got 14 points each from Bryn Forbes and Derrick White. They lost for the fifth time in six games as they fight for a playoff spot.

TRAIL BLAZERS 115, HEAT 99

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Damian Lillard had 32 points and 10 assists, and Portland beat Miami for its 10th straight victory.

Jusuf Nurkic added 27 points and 16 rebounds for the Blazers, who have the longest current winning streak in the NBA and a two-game lead over Oklahoma City for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.

Lillard scored 21 points after halftime. He leads the league in second-half scoring.

Goran Dragic scored 23 points for the Heat, who were without two key players in starting center Hassan Whiteside and sixth man Dwyane Wade.

BUCKS 121, GRIZZLIES 103

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Khris Middleton scored 24 points, Giannis Antetokounmpo added 20 and Milwaukee sent Memphis to its 18th consecutive loss.

Brandon Jennings, signed to a 10-day contract by Milwaukee on Sunday, finished two rebounds short of a triple-double with 16 points and 12 assists. Eric Bledsoe added 14 points, including a trio of baskets to stem a fourth-quarter Memphis rally.

Marc Gasol led the Grizzlies with 17 points, while Jarell Martin, Dillon Brooks and Ben McLemore scored 16 apiece.

THUNDER 106, KINGS 101

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Russell Westbrook scored 17 points and notched his 20th triple-double of the season to help Oklahoma City beat Sacramento.

Westbrook had 10 rebounds and 11 assists in the 99th triple-double of his career.

Paul George and Carmelo Anthony each scored 21 points for the Thunder, who moved into fourth place in the Western Conference standings.

Thunder center Steven Adams left the game in the third quarter with a left hip contusion and did not return. Just two days earlier against San Antonio, he hurt his left ankle in the third quarter and did not return.

Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 19 points and Garrett Temple and Justin Jackson each added 15 for the Kings.

Mavericks' Matthews likely out for season
March 12, 2018

DALLAS (AP) Mavericks guard Wesley Matthews has a broken bone in his lower right leg and is likely to miss the rest of the season.

The team says the 31-year-old Matthews was injured in the first quarter against Memphis on Saturday. The nine-year veteran played into the fourth quarter of the Mavericks' 114-80 win.

The injury was announced Monday as a fracture to the right proximal fibula, just below the knee. Dallas (21-46) already has been eliminated from playoff contention.

Matthews is averaging 12.7 points in his third season with Dallas since signing a $70 million, four-year contract in 2015. It was the same summer that DeAndre Jordan backed out on an agreement to join the Mavericks, a decision that resulted in more money for Matthews.

After signing with Dallas, Matthews returned much sooner than expected after tearing an Achilles tendon late in his final season with Portland.

Kerr urges youth to work for change
March 12, 2018

NEWARK, Calif. (AP) Steve Kerr believes the voices of America's youth are finally being heard enough to create real change when it comes to gun violence.

Kerr told students at a Bay Area high school that safety in schools should be their ''No. 1 issue,'' urged them to vote and consider what they might be able to do to make gun safety and awareness a priority.

Kerr, the Golden State Warriors coach who has been outspoken on many social justice issues , drew a big crowd and a standing ovation before sharing how his life was affected by gun violence more than three decades ago when his father was shot dead in a terrorist attack.

''I'm not here because I'm the Warriors coach. Actually I am, because I wouldn't have been invited. I'm here because I'm a citizen of this country and we're a democracy and when people say stick to sports, stick to coaching, that means nothing,'' Kerr said Monday at Newark Memorial High School. ''I feel like it's my responsibility to speak on something that's very important to me.''

Kerr joined U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna, U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, and students from throughout the South Bay to discuss the issue. Also in attendance was Matt Deitsch, 20, whose younger brother and sister stayed locked in closets during last month's shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

''I think he sees what so many of us see: There's a moment in this country that can make a difference,'' Khanna said.

Deitsch identified himself as the oldest member of the ''Never Again'' movement. He and others in his group plan to march in Washington, D.C., on March 24.

''It will change things because the youth is mobilizing at a rate that scares the status quo,'' said Deitsch, who noted: ''This is affecting all communities. It can happen anywhere.''

Kerr believes young people will help create change. ''All I've really done is expressed my outrage and my concern,'' he said.

Kerr said he'd like to do more, perhaps getting ''my team involved.''

''I have been truly inspired by what I'm seeing lately from the kids at Douglas High School,'' Kerr said. ''I'm inspired by what's happening. It feels real. For the first time, it feels like something's happening.''

Kerr's father, Malcolm, president of the American University of Beirut, was murdered in Beirut when Kerr was 18 and a freshman at the University of Arizona.

''I know how the Parkland families feel, or the Aurora families, or Sandy Hook,'' Kerr said. ''I know what it feels like. I met family members from Las Vegas. I know what that feels like. It's awful. It's devastating. It's horrible.''

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

? 109 different golfers have won a PGA tournament since the last time Eldrick Woods won.

? Neil Walker gets $4M for one year from the Bronx Bombers.

? This is first time in 21 years the Spurs will have a losing road record.

? There are 30 sets of brothers playing Division I basketball this season.

? ESPN is running an all-night marathon related to the college basketball tournament; it is a little like a bizarre ESPN variety show. It is oddly entertaining.

? I wish that kids who enter the NBA Draft but aren?t selected would be allowed to go back to their college team, no harm done. Maybe that can happen soon.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Been a rough sports year for the Pac-12; they went 1-8 in bowl games last fall, and now got only three teams in March Madness, two of them in play-in games. USC was shunned, but maybe that was because of the FBI stuff.

Maybe if more people could watch the Pac-12 Network (hint, hint), they?d get screwed over less on Selection Sunday.

12) Creighton-Kansas State is really interesting, because the Bluejays? best player is Marcus Foster, who played the first two years of his college career at??.Kansas State.

11) Did agent Scott Boras cost Royals? 3B Mike Moustakas $38.5M this winter?

There are stories on the Interweb that Boras turned down a 3-year, $45M deal with the Angels, who later signed Zach Cosart instead. Moustakas, who also turned down the $17.5M qualifying offer from the Royals, wound up signing back with Kansas City for $6.5M for 2018.

Oy.

10) College basketball coaching carousel:
? Lorenzo Romar returns to Pepperdine; he coached the Waves from 1996-99.
? Cal-Northridge hires former NC State coach Mark Gottfried.

9) Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic became only the 13th goalie in AHL history to score a goal when he found an empty net in Charlotte?s 7-3 win over Hartford last week.

8) When Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield went to the NFL Combine, he was interviewed by 11 different teams (15:00 each). Would be curious how similar the interviews were.

7) When Richard Sherman signed with the 49ers over the weekend, he represented himself, saving the 3% agents normally get. Sherman saved roughly $210,000 by doing that, but did he get himself the best deal possible?

Writer Mke Florio points out that if he signed the same deal with the Lions as he did with the 49ers, Sherman would?ve paid $1,176,500 less in state taxes. Maybe he wanted to stay in the NFC West; only he knows for sure.

6) Basketball teams that run the Princeton offense generally practice all different kinds of layups for eight minutes in every practice; why doesn?t everyone do this?

Seems like that would be an important skill to have, to be creative close to the basket.

5) Providence lost in the Big East finals Saturday night; all three of their tournament games went to overtime, which doesn?t happen very often.

4) Good grief, I?m tired of the Masters commercials; they started in freakin? January, before the Super Bowl. Its a golf tournament on a really nice course, we get it. Enough already.

3) Listening to Nevada coach Eric Musselman Sunday night, he kind of threw St Mary?s under the bus as far as scheduling goes.

Nevada added four games to their schedule as late as August (URI, Texas Tech, TCU, Davidson) after Musselman read how the Selection Committee would stress road games this season. Wolf Pack didn?t win the Mountain West tournament, but they did get the league?s first at-large bid since 2015.

St Mary?s apparently refused to schedule better teams, even turning down home/home series. Sunday, they paid for it.

2) San Diego Padres have a shortstop prospect named Fernando Tatis Jr who they?re very high on; his dad Fernando Tatis is famous for one thing? on April 23, 1999, he hit two grand slams in the same inning, for the Cardinals in Dodger Stadium.

Not only that, but both grand slams were against the same pitcher- Chan Ho Park. Eight RBI in one inning is a record that likely will never be broken.

1? Doug Gottlieb tweeted this Sunday night, about the St Mary?s snub:

?St Mary?s not getting in is the reason Gonzaga will leave the WCC?

Gonzaga is likely to bolt the WCC soon, much like Wichita State left the MVC last summer. But where will the Zags go? Please don?t tell me the Big East.

Gonzaga is located in Spokane, WA, which is roughly 30 miles from the Idaho border. How in the name of Rand McNally can a school 30 miles from Idaho be in the freakin? Big East???

Game of the Night: Nuggets (-2, 230 ?) at Lakers ? 10:35 PM EST

The Lakers (30-36 SU, 36-30 ATS) continue to defend their home court as Los Angeles improved to 11-1 SU and 10-2 ATS since January 7 at Staples Center following Sunday?s 127-113 blowout of Cleveland. Julius Randle put together a career game against the Cavaliers by scoring 36 points and pulling down 14 rebounds, while Isaiah Thomas burned his former team for 20 points off the bench. The Lakers still have plenty of work to do if they want to make the playoffs as they sit 6 ? games back of the eighth spot in the Western Conference.

Four teams are fighting it out for the final two positions in the Western playoff race as the Clippers, Jazz, Nuggets, and Spurs are the teams that are trying to draw either Golden State or Houston in the opening round. Denver (37-30 SU, 31-33-3 ATS) has struggled on the road this season by owning an 11-20 record away from the Pepsi Center, but has won three of its last four on the highway. The Nuggets are fresh off a 130-104 blowout of the Kings on Sunday as 11 ?-point home favorites, as Denver shot 56% from the floor, while center Nikola Jokic posted a triple-double by scoring 20 points, pulling down 10 rebounds, and dishing out 10 assists.

The home team has won all three matchups this season, as the Nuggets knocked off the Lakers last Friday, 125-116 as seven-point favorites. Los Angeles led by two points heading into the fourth quarter until Denver pulled away by outscoring the Lakers, 31-20 to pick up the home cover. Three Nuggets scored at least 21 points, led by Jamal Murray?s 22, as Denver knocked down 26-of-30 free throws in the win.

Not on Target

The race for first place in the Northwest division is a good one with Portland currently leading the way. All five squads have a chance to make the playoffs, while the team in the middle is Minnesota (39-29 SU, 31-35-2 ATS), who is primed for its first postseason appearance since 2004. The Wolves travel to Washington looking to improve on a dreadful 2-13 SU and 3-12 ATS road mark in 2018, including recent divisional setbacks at Utah and Portland.

Minnesota is coming off a solid 109-103 home victory over Golden State on Sunday afternoon as 3 ?-point underdogs to snap a three-game skid. The Wolves look to avenge a 92-89 setback to the Wizards from late November at the Target Center, as Minnesota owns a 2-10 record against Eastern Conference teams on the road. Washington (38-29 SU, 32-34-1 ATS) looks to bounce back from a 27-point loss at Miami on Saturday, while losing four of its past six games at Capital One Arena.

Pacing Up

Due to Cleveland?s recent struggles, Indiana (39-28 SU, 38-29 ATS) has taken advantage by grabbing first place in the Central division by a half-game heading into Tuesday?s action. The Pacers rallied past the Celtics on Sunday, 99-97 as 4 ?-point road underdogs, improving to 5-1 SU/ATS in the last six games. Indiana has tightened up its defense in this stretch by allowing less than 100 points five times, while cashing the UNDER in seven consecutive games overall.

The 76ers (36-29 SU, 36-27-2 ATS) return home from a 2-2 road trip, capped off by Sunday?s 120-97 blowout of the Nets as 5 ?-point favorites. Philadelphia has yet to lose at Wells Fargo Center in 2018 by posting a perfect 13-0 record, while amazingly covering 12 times in this span. The Sixers and Pacers have split a pair of matchups this season as Indiana won at home in early February, 100-92.

Sweet Sounds

One of the most incredible runs this season in the NBA has been produced by the Jazz (37-30 SU, 36-31 ATS), who own a remarkable 18-2 record the last 20 games. The biggest of this winning stretch came in an overtime victory at Detroit on January 24, as the Jazz host the Pistons tonight. Utah swept a three-game road swing over the weekend by rolling past New Orleans, 116-99 as 1 ?-point favorites.

The Jazz return to Salt Lake City to start a four-game homestand against four teams all sitting below the .500 mark. The Pistons (30-36 SU, 29-335-2 ATS) embark on a six-game road swing against Western Conference foes, starting with Utah, Denver, and Portland over the next five nights. Detroit is on 3-10 run since a five-game winning streak, coming off Friday?s 99-83 rout of Chicago as 7 ?-point favorites. The Pistons have struggled on the road of late by dropping nine straight away from Little Caesars Arena, while covering once in this stretch.

Grounded Pelicans

New Orleans (38-28 SU, 35-30-1 ATS) pulled off 10 consecutive victories heading into last Friday?s contest against Washington. Anthony Davis sat out due to injury and the Pelicans? hot streak came to a screeching halt in a 116-97 home setback to the Wizards. Two nights later, New Orleans fell to Utah by 17 points as the Pelicans look to end their sudden losing streak against the Hornets.

Charlotte (29-38 SU, 27-36-4 ATS) snapped a five-game skid by holding off Phoenix on Saturday, 122-115, but failed to cash as 13-point favorites. Charlotte has slumped from an ATS standpoint of late by covering only once in the last six games, while losing at Boston, Philadelphia, and Toronto in this span. The Hornets have lost three straight meetings with the Pelicans since the start of last season, including a 101-96 home setback in late January.

Setting Suns

Phoenix (19-49 SU, 31-35-2 ATS) is back home for one game following an 0-4 road trip that included losses to Atlanta, Miami, Oklahoma City, and Charlotte. The Suns made a late run to cover as 13-point underdogs at Charlotte on Saturday, but Phoenix has put together an 0-8 ATS record in its last eight games off a cover. Phoenix is currently on a 1-15 run with the only victory coming at Memphis in late February, a Grizzlies? team that has lost 18 straight games.

The Suns welcome in the Cavaliers (38-29 SU, 21-44-1 ATS), who are coming off consecutive losses in Los Angeles to the Clippers and Lakers. As a road favorite, Cleveland has compiled an embarrassing 2-13 ATS mark in their last 15 opportunities, including outright losses at Orlando, Sacramento, and Detroit. The Cavaliers have captured the last five matchups with the Suns since 2015, but have failed to cash in their past two road victories at Phoenix as a favorite.
