LeBron, Nance power Cavaliers past Pistons 112-90
March 5, 2018

CLEVELAND (AP) LeBron James scored 31 points before taking a seat on the bench, Larry Nance Jr. reached career highs with 22 points and 15 rebounds in his first start for Cleveland, and the Cavaliers closed a disappointing five-game homestand on a positive note with a 112-90 win Monday night over the Detroit Pistons, who haven't won on the road in nearly two months.

With Cleveland missing three big men - All-Star Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson and Jeff Green - because of injuries, the Cavs needed someone to step up and Nance came through. Wearing the same No. 22 his father had retired by Cleveland, the 25-year-old Nance had the best game of his young career.

James was his usual brilliant self, making 5 of 7 3-pointers and adding seven rebounds and seven assists. With the Cavs comfortably ahead, James sat the entire fourth quarter, a rarity in this odd season.

Blake Griffin scored 25 to lead Detroit, which has lost nine straight away from home.

CELTICS 105, BULLS 89

CHICAGO (AP) - Jaylen Brown scored 21 points and Boston pounded Chicago even though Kyrie Irving sat out because of a sore left knee.

Even without their All-Star guard, the Celtics took control right from the start and led by as many as 37 en route to their fifth win in six games.

Jayson Tatum added 14 points, while Al Horford and Terry Rozier scored 13 apiece for Boston.

The Bulls lost for the 14th time in 17 games. Denzel Valentine scored 20 points and nailed four 3-pointers for Chicago, but that was about the only positive for the Bulls.

SPURS 100, GRIZZLIES 98

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Tony Parker had 23 points, sparking San Antonio to a needed victory over Memphis before embarking on a difficult road trip.

Memphis has lost 14 straight, but San Antonio's recent skid has had a greater impact on the Western Conference playoff picture. The Spurs had dropped eight of 10 and fallen from third to sixth in the crowded West, putting them at risk of missing the postseason for the first time in 21 years.

San Antonio moved up a spot to fifth place ahead of Minnesota with the victory.

Davis Bertans added 17 points and Danny Green had 14 for the Spurs, who snapped a four-game losing streak at home.

HEAT 125, SUNS 103

MIAMI (AP) - Hassan Whiteside had 24 points and 14 rebounds, Goran Dragic scored 17 and Miami moved into the No. 7 spot in the Eastern Conference by topping Phoenix.

Whiteside had his highest-scoring game since Jan. 29, making 10 of his 13 shots. He averaged only 12.2 points on 48-percent shooting in his most recent 12 games.

Kelly Olynyk scored 15 points for the Heat, who gave four of their starters - Whiteside included - the entire fourth quarter off and beat the Suns for the 18th time in their last 20 meetings.

Dwyane Wade, Josh Richardson, Justise Winslow and Luke Babbitt each had 12 for the Heat, which had seven players in double figures.

PACERS 92, BUCKS 89

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Bojan Bogdanovic tied his season high with 29 points and grabbed a key jump ball late to lift Indiana over Milwaukee.

Milwaukee's Khris Middleton stole Victor Oladipo's pass with 10 seconds left and Indiana leading 90-89. He rushed to the basket, but Cory Joseph chased him down and got a hand on the basketball before Middleton could attempt a shot. The ball rolled out of bounds, and referees called a jump ball after video replay. Bogdanovic came down with the tip off the jump ball and added a pair of free throws with six seconds left.

Thaddeus Young had 10 points and seven rebounds, and Oladipo finished with 14 points, five assists and five rebounds along with 10 turnovers.

JAZZ 94, MAGIC 80

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Rudy Gobert had 21 points and 17 rebounds to lead Utah over Orlando.

Donovan Mitchell scored 19 points and Joe Ingles added 18 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Jazz, who have won three in a row and 15 of 17. Still, the Jazz sit 1 1/2 games outside the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Nikola Vucevic had 15 points - most coming from the perimeter outside Gobert's reach, including three 3s - and 12 rebounds while Aaron Gordon had 13 points for the Magic.

LeBron animated over Bryant's Oscar
March 5, 2018

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) LeBron James watched Kobe Bryant score big again.

But he's focused on a different shiny trophy than the one his former rival snagged Sunday night.

James joined Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal and other current and former NBA players to congratulate Bryant after the Los Angeles Lakers superstar won an Academy Award in the animated short film category.

Holding his Oscar, Bryant later said, ''I feel better than winning a championship, to be honest with you. I swear I do.''

On Monday, James said he watched Bryant's film, ''Dear Basketball,'' which was based on a poem the five-time champion wrote in 2015 in advance of his retirement from playing, the night it debuted.

''It was phenomenal,'' James said.

But while he and Bryant had a fierce on-court rivalry, James, who won acclaim for a supporting role in the comedy ''Trainwreck'' and owns a film production company, said he isn't driven to match Bryant's Hollywood haul.

''Nah, it's never been one of my goals,'' he said of winning an Oscar. ''But now that I'm in a movie and film and TV business and doing so many things, if at some point we can be nominated and win the Oscar, that would be something that I never thought that would happen for sure. We've got some things in the works, so we'll see what happens.''

James has served an executive producer for several TV series and his company is working on documentary about Muhammad Ali. He's also planning a sequel to ''Space Jam,'' which starred Michael Jordan.

During his acceptance speech, Bryant took a swipe at conservative commentator Laura Ingraham, who recently lectured James and Kevin Durant after they were critical of President Trump.

''As basketball players we're supposed to shut up and dribble,'' Bryant said. ''I'm glad we do a little but more than that.''

James acknowledged Bryant's line on Twitter, posting: (hash)WeAreMoreThanShutUpDribble.

Sore knee sidelines Celtics' Irving for game against Bulls
March 5, 2018

CHICAGO (AP) Boston Celtics All-Star guard Kyrie Irving sat out Monday night's game against the Chicago Bulls because of a sore left knee.

Coach Brad Stevens said Irving aggravated the knee during Saturday's loss to Houston. He felt a little better the following day but was still sore on Monday. Stevens wasn't sure if Irving will be ready to play at Minnesota on Thursday.

''It doesn't sound like it's a long-term concern, but certainly, it could last through the week,'' Stevens said.

The Celtics chose to start Shane Larkin rather than go with Terry Rozier or Marcus Smart because Stevens said he wanted to keep the second unit together.

Acquired from Cleveland in the offseason deal that sent Isaiah Thomas to the Cavaliers, Irving is averaging 24.8 points in 58 games. He has missed time this season because of a bruised quadriceps, a sore shoulder and a facial fracture.

The Celtics were second behind Toronto in the Eastern Conference at 44-20 entering Monday's game.

Tuesday's Tip Sheet
March 6, 2018

Game of the Night: Rockets (-5 ?, 221) at Thunder ? 8:05 PM EST

The race for the top seed in the Western Conference is a good one coming down the stretch between Houston and Golden State. Entering Tuesday?s action, the Rockets (49-13 SU, 32-29-1 ATS) lead the Warriors by a half-game for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs thanks to an incredible 15-game winning streak.

The latest victim for Houston was a team that has NBA Finals aspirations in the Eastern Conference as the Rockets edged the Celtics on Saturday, 123-120 on Saturday night. Although Houston failed to cover as 8 ?-point favorites, Mike D?Antoni?s team rallied from a six-point halftime deficit led by Eric Gordon?s 29 points off the bench, including seven three-pointers. James Harden struggled from the floor by hitting 6-of-18 shots, but managed 26 points thanks to hitting 11 free throws. The Rockets had covered nine straight as a single-digit favorite prior to that ATS defeat.

Oklahoma City (37-28 SU, 26-39 ATS) returns home following a 2-1 road trip, capped off by a 108-100 defeat at Portland on Saturday as 4 ?-point underdogs. The Thunder played six of the last seven games away from Chesapeake Energy Arena, while covering just twice in this stretch. In Saturday?s setback, Carmelo Anthony didn?t play for the Thunder, while Russell Westbrook led OKC with 30 points as the Thunder shot 6-of-27 from three-point range.

Houston eliminated Oklahoma City in five games of the playoffs last season, but the Thunder captured the first meeting this season in a 112-107 triumph on Christmas night. Westbrook outdueled Harden, 31-29 in the points department, as the Thunder shot 54% from the field. However, the Rockets played without point guard Chris Paul, as Houston has won 22 of the last 24 games with the All-Star in the lineup.

Making it Look Easy

The Pelicans (36-26 SU, 33-28-1 ATS) are the second-hottest team in the league behind the Rockets as New Orleans is riding an eight-game winning streak. Five of those victories are on the road, including a pair of triumphs in Texas over San Antonio and Dallas, while topping the 120-point mark in six straight wins. New Orleans has hit the OVER in six consecutive games, while vaulting all the way to the fourth playoff position in the Western Conference.

The road trip continues for New Orleans with a visit to Staples Center in Los Angeles to face the Clippers (34-28 SU, 35-26-1 ATS). L.A. squeezed past Brooklyn on Sunday, 123-120 as seven-point home favorites, led by Austin Rivers? 27 points and Tobias Harris posting 26 points as the Clips own a solid 11-4 SU/ATS record the last 15 games. The Pelicans and Clippers have split a pair of meetings this season in New Orleans, as L.A. erased an 11-point halftime deficit in a 112-103 victory in late January.

Buzzed Off

Following a 5-0 run towards the end of February, the Hornets (28-36 SU, 27-33-4 ATS) have fallen back to their old ways by dropping three straight games. Granted, the three losses came at Boston, Philadelphia, and Toronto, all teams headed to the playoffs, but two of those defeats came by double-digits. Charlotte managed a cover as 8 ?-point underdogs in Sunday?s 103-98 setback at Toronto, but the Hornets sit six games behind Milwaukee for the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Hornets get another shot at the 76ers after losing at Philadelphia last Friday as the two teams meet in Charlotte. Philadelphia (34-28 SU, 34-26-2 ATS) looks to rebound after blowing a 20-point lead in Sunday?s 118-110 defeat at Milwaukee to fall to 3-8 in the last 11 road games. The 76ers own an 0-4 ATS record in their past four in the role of an away favorite, while losing in four of the last five visits to Charlotte since 2015.

District Debacle

Washington (36-28 SU, 31-33 ATS) leads the Southeast division but isn?t getting the job done at Capital One Arena. The Wizards have lost three straight home games, capped off by Sunday?s 98-95 setback to the Pacers as four-point favorites, falling to 2-8 ATS in the last 10 opportunities as a home favorite. Washington suffered its first three-game losing streak of the season with Sunday?s defeat, but the Wizards own a 9-1 record this season off back-to-back losses.

The Heat (34-30 SU, 32-38-4 ATS) travel to D.C. after blasting the Suns on Monday, 125-103 to finish their homestand at 4-1. Miami has split its last six games with no rest on the road, but has covered five times in this stretch. The Heat swept the Wizards in the four-game season series in 2016-17, but the two division rivals have split a pair of meetings this season with the road team winning each time.

Blazin? Away

Portland (38-26 SU, 33-26-5 ATS) erased an 11-point deficit at Los Angeles by outscoring the Lakers, 22-6 in the final 5:30 of regulation to pick up its seventh straight win, 108-103. Damian Lillard drilled four three-pointers during that run, while scoring 39 points to lift the Blazers to their third win over the Lakers. The Blazers have helped out backers by covering six times during this seven-game hot streak, while limiting four teams to below 100 points.

The Knicks (24-40 SU, 29-35 ATS) have hit the skids by dropping 12 of the past 13 games, including a loss in the final seconds at Sacramento on Sunday, 102-99. New York has lost four straight since beating Orlando in the first game after the All-Star break, while failing to cover in all four defeats. The Knicks look to avenge a 103-91 home loss to the Blazers in late November, as New York last won at the Moda Center in December 2015.

Back to the Bay

The Warriors (49-14 SU, 28-34-1 ATS) are seeking their 50th win on the season as they host Brooklyn as 15-point home favorites. Golden State put together a perfect three-game road trip out east by knocking off New York, Washington, and Atlanta, but failed to cover in the final two victories. Steve Kerr?s squad has three key games ahead over a four-day stretch against San Antonio, Portland, and Minnesota later this week.

The first task will be knocking off the Nets (20-44 SU, 36-28 ATS), who have lost nine consecutive games away from the Barclays Center. Brooklyn has covered three of its past four in the role of a road underdog, including in losses on this trip to the Cavaliers and Clippers. The Nets look to snap a five-game skid to the Warriors dating back to 2015, as Brooklyn covered as an 11 ?-point home underdog in a 118-111 setback to Golden State in November.

Rockets run win streak to 16, beat Thunder 122-112
March 6, 2018

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Chris Paul scored 25 points and the Houston Rockets beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-112 on Tuesday night for their 16th straight win.

James Harden had 23 points and 11 assists, and Trevor Ariza added 15 points for the Rockets, who are on the second-longest win streak in franchise history.

Russell Westbrook scored 32 points and Carmelo Anthony added 23 for Oklahoma City, which is in a logjam of teams trying to fight their way into third place in the West.

Oklahoma City had beaten several of the league's top teams this season. The Thunder have two wins over Golden State, a victory over Toronto and a win over Cleveland this season. The Rockets avoided that fate by going 17 of 33 on 3-pointers and 29 of 34 on free throws.

WIZARDS 117, HEAT 113, OT

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bradley Beal scored 30 points on 12-of-16 shooting and Washington had its best 3-point shooting night of the season to beat Miami.

Beal went 6 of 7 from beyond the arc, leading a Washington team that finished 14 for 24 there while snapping its first three-game losing streak of the season.

Tomas Satoransky added 19 points and Markieff Morris had 16 points and 13 rebounds. Morris' baseline 3-pointer off Beal's feed made it 113-109 with 1:06 left in overtime.

The fifth-place Wizards improved to 11-6 in their extended stretch without All-Star point guard John Wall as he recovers from knee surgery. They moved within a half-game of Indiana and maintained a one-game lead on Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference.

Dwyane Wade scored 22 points but missed on a potential game-tying jumper with 4.1 seconds left in overtime for Miami.

RAPTORS 106, HAWKS 90

TORONTO (AP) - DeMar DeRozan scored 25 points, Jonas Valanciunas had 15 and Toronto beat Atlanta for its fifth straight win.

C.J. Miles added 14 points, and Delon Wright and Serge Ibaka each had 10 as the Eastern Conference leaders won for the 12th time in 13 games and completed their first season sweep of the Hawks since 2001-02.

The Raptors are 27-5 at home, the best record in the NBA. Toronto, which trailed by one to begin the fourth quarter, improved to 4-16 when behind through three.

Toronto outscored Atlanta 30-13 in the fourth. The Hawks shot 6 for 18 in the quarter and committed eight turnovers.

76ERS 128, HORNETS 114

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Robert Covington scored 22 points, Ben Simmons flirted with a triple-double and Philadelphia handed Charlotte its fourth straight loss.

Simmons had 16 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds as the 76ers won for the third time in the last four games.

Dario Saric scored 19 points, Joel Embiid added 18 and JJ Redick chipped in with 14 as seven 76ers finished in double digits in what might have been the final blow to the Hornets' playoff hopes.

While the 76ers shot 57.5 percent from field - including 16 of 33 from 3-point range - Charlotte's All-Star point guard Kemba Walker couldn't find the bottom of the net. Walker was limited to a season-low five points on 1-of-9 shooting.

Dwight Howard had a season-high 30 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Nic Batum had 12 points and 10 assists for Charlotte, which fell seven games out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 17 games remaining.

MAVERICKS 118, NUGGETS 107

DALLAS (AP) - Yogi Ferrell rode hot 3-point shooting to a season-high 24 points, Dirk Nowitzki also was strong from long range to score 17 and Dallas beat Denver.

Ferrell and Nowitzki both made their first five 3s, and Ferrell finished 9 of 11 from the field to help one of the NBA's worst teams hand the Nuggets a loss they didn't need in the tight Western Conference playoff race.

A second-year guard who came to Dallas on a 10-day contract last season, Ferrell finished 6 of 7 from long range. The 39-year-old Nowitzki, in his 20th season, all with the Mavericks, was 5 of 7.

Rookie Dennis Smith Jr. had 18 points and a career-high 11 assists as the Mavericks won for just the second time in nine games.

Wilson Chandler scored 21 points for the Nuggets, who couldn't follow up a win at Cleveland with a chance to sweep a three-game road trip.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Over/under wagers for home runs this season:

31.5 Gary Sanchez

30.5 Kyle Schwarber

28.5 Marcell Ozuna

28.5 Charlie Blackmon

27.5 Joey Votto

26.5 Jake Lamb

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??

13) One of the most underestimated facts in sports; over the last five years, Tom Brady has earned $74,784,964, ?only? $14,956,993 a year. That allows New England more flexibility in paying other players. Not many quarterbacks or any athlete would willingly take less money to help the ballclub win? you think a member of the Manning family would do that?

Since 2013, Eli Manning has earned $97,660,004, 3rd-most in NFL.

Lot of people think Brady is the best quarterback ever; for him to be in the middle of the pack salary-wise is ludicrous and absurd.

12) Since 2013, Baltimore Ravens have spent $119,584,094 on the QB position, most in the NFL; Tennessee Titans have spent $38,280,713, the least.

11) Matthew Stafford has earned $111,008,969 over the last five years; he has an 0-3 career record in playoff games, which is part of why the Lions changed coaches this winter.

10) St Mary?s lost in the WCC tourney and their non-conference strength of schedule is #290; I don?t know if they?re getting in NCAA?s or not, but I do know this will be the longest week of their lives, as they wait for 6:00 Sunday night, to see if their season is a success or a failure.

9) Maine fired its basketball Monday and hired the former women?s coach, who sat out last year on medical leave. Then Maine?s best player announced he would transfer; Aaron Calixte scored 17 points a game this season. New coach?s job just got a little tougher.

8) Random baseball fact: last year, Joey Votto had a streak of 20 games in a row where he reached base 2+ times. That is the longest such streak since 1981. Barry Bonds had a 19-game streak in 2004.

7) Ed Hochuli retired as an NFL referee; he gave the best explanations for penalties. Long time ago, Hochuli was a linebacker at Texas-El Paso. Hochuli?s son Shawn is one of two new NFL refs, replacing his dad and Jeff Triplette, who also retired.

6) Charleston 83, Northeastern 76 OT? CAA final was one of best games of Champ Week so far. Huskies led by as many as 17 points in second half. This tournament is usually played in Richmond, but has been in Charleston last couple years- that sure helped the Cougars in this game. Charleston is in NCAA?s for first time since 1999.

Northeastern +2.5 is a very tough beat.

5) Wow. University of Memphis is seriously considering firing Tubby Smith and replacing him with Memphis legend Anfernee Hardaway, who is currently a high school coach in Memphis.

Rumors are that Hardaway would bring Larry Brown in as an assistant coach. Brown will be 78 in September; he is the only coach ever to win an NBA title and an NCAA national title.

4) Arizona Diamondbacks are bringing the bullpen cart back for this year; not sure if it?ll help pace of play at all, but bullpen carts are very cool. Now that just about all the bullpens are off the field and behind the OF fence, you might see more teams do this.

3) Gonzaga 74, BYU 54? Orleans Arena in Las Vegas has a great coffee shop; am guessing it is filled with happy Gonzaga fans after this rout of a BYU team that emptied its bucket when they upset St Mary?s Monday nite.

There is talk of Gonzaga moving to a better basketball league; that would be a really interesting decision. Gonzaga is kind of like UNLV was in the late 80?s when they ruled the Big West, but once they moved to the Mountain West, things haven?t been as good for the Rebels. Sometimes it is better to be the big fish in a smaller pond.

2) South Dakota 97, South Dakota 87? Jackrabbits are headed to NCAA?s for 3rd year in row and fifth time overall. They have a 6-8 kid named Daum who is an NBA player- he can shoot the 3-ball (42.8%) but when he got in foul trouble in this game, they still stretched out their lead- their freshman Jenkins is also a really good player.

1? In 1985, Mike Schmidt was the highest paid baseball player, at $3,125,000 a year.

This year, even a cheapskate team like my Oakland A?s have six guys who make that much. Trust me, none of those six guys could touch Mike Schmidt?s shoelaces. If Schmidt was playing today, you?d have to add on a zero to the end of that $3,125,000 to pay his tab.

Wednesday's Tip Sheet
March 7, 2018

Game of the Night: Cavaliers at Nuggets (-2 ?, 230 ?) ? 10:35 PM EST

The biggest soap opera in the NBA this season has taken place in Cleveland as the Cavaliers (37-26 SU, 20-42-1 ATS) have gone through a roller-coaster season that includes a major roster overhaul prior to the All-Star break. Cleveland still sits atop the Central division in spite of a 3-4 record since the break, which includes home losses to San Antonio, Philadelphia, and Denver. The Cavaliers rebounded on Monday by blowing out the Pistons, 112-90 as six-point favorites to snap an 0-4 ATS run.

The Nuggets (35-29 SU, 29-32-3 ATS) return home after getting tripped up by the Mavericks on Tuesday, 118-107 as 6 ?-point road favorites. Dallas outscored Denver, 38-23 in the third quarter to pull away as the Nuggets were limited to 41% shooting from the floor, including four points from center Nikola Jokic. Denver owns a 1-5 ATS record since the All-Star break, while eclipsing the OVER for the 10th time in the last 11 games.

Denver?s only cover in the last six games came in last Saturday?s 126-117 road triumph at Cleveland as 4 ?-point underdogs. Nuggets? guard Gary Harris led the way with 32 points, while Will Barton put up 23 points off the bench for Denver, who knocked down 19 three-pointers as a team. LeBron James compiled another triple-double with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 15 assists, as Cleveland tries to win at Denver for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

Perfect Ten?

The Pelicans (37-26 SU, 34-28-1 ATS) are heating up at the right time and aren?t slowing down any time soon. New Orleans picked up its ninth straight victory on Tuesday at Los Angeles in a 121-116 win over the Clippers as two-point underdogs. Anthony Davis continued his argument for league MVP as the Pelicans? All-Star shredded the Clippers for 41 points and 13 rebounds, while guard Jrue Holiday scored 19 points to go along with 17 assists.

New Orleans registered its seventh consecutive OVER, while improving to 6-0 on the road during this hot streak. The Pelicans wrap up their away swing in Sacramento against a feisty Kings? (20-44 SU, 29-32-3 ATS) squad that has defeated New Orleans twice this season. The Kings have won two of their last three games, including close victories over the Nets and Knicks. Sacramento owns a solid 7-3 ATS record the past 10 contests, while knocking off New Orleans as a 9 ? and 9-point underdog on the road already.

Sweet Sixteen

The Rockets (50-13 SU, 33-29-1 ATS) and Warriors each reached the 50-win mark with victories on Tuesday. Houston overcame an early deficit to down Oklahoma City, 122-112 as 5 ?-point road favorites, as the dynamic duo of James Harden and Chris Paul combined to score 48 points, while the Rockets drilled 17 three-pointers. The Rockets not only won their 16th consecutive game, but also improved to an incredible 10-1 ATS in the last 11 opportunities as a single-digit favorite.

Houston is once again laying single-digits tonight at Milwaukee as the Rockets have compiled a 6-3 SU and 3-6 ATS record with no rest. The Bucks (34-30 SU, 26-33-5 ATS) have lost five of their last six games following Monday?s three-point setback at Indiana. The only victory in this stretch for Milwaukee came in Sunday?s remarkable rally against Philadelphia by erasing a 20-point deficit in a 118-110 win. The Bucks managed a cover as 10 ?-point road underdogs in a 115-111 loss at Houston in December, while beating the Rockets in the last two home matchups.

First to Four

Utah and Indiana hook up in an intriguing matchup at Bankers Life Fieldhouse as each of these up-and-coming teams are seeking four-game winning streaks. The Jazz (34-30 SU, 33-31 ATS) embark on a three-game road swing following a 94-80 victory as 9 ?-point home favorites over the Magic on Monday. Utah?s defense has stepped up recently by allowing 100 points or less in nine of the last 10 contests, while cashing the UNDER seven times in this stretch.

The Jazz look to avenge a 109-94 home setback to the Pacers in mid-January as Indiana (37-27 SU, 36-28 ATS) is coming off a pair of wins over Milwaukee and a solid road victory at Washington. Indiana?s defense has also tightened up of late by giving up 96 points or fewer during this three-game winning streak, while putting together a 9-1 record in its previous 10 home contests.

Opposite Directions

Since falling at Washington on February 1, the Raptors (46-17 SU, 36-27 ATS) have won 12 of their last 13 games to take over first place of the Atlantic division. Toronto has cashed 10 times during this stretch, including a perfect 4-0 SU/ATS record as a road favorite. The Raptors travel to Detroit looking to beat the Pistons for the third time this season, as Toronto grabbed a 123-94 rout in their last matchup on February 26.

The Pistons (29-35 SU, 27-35-2 ATS) have lost nine of their past 11 games since a five-game winning streak early February to fall 4 ? games back of the Heat for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Detroit has covered only once in the previous 12 contests, including an 0-5 ATS mark as an underdog. The Pistons have had their struggles with the Raptors since the start of last season by compiling a 1-5 SU and 2-4 ATS record in the past six meetings, including a pair of home losses to Toronto.

Books adjust to Blazers
March 6, 2018

Damian Lillard Demands Your Attention

With two winning streaks on the line, Damian Lillard ensured that it was his team that kept the momentum in hand. Dame launched four triples in the fourth quarter to cap an impressive 39-point night in the Staples Center as he buried the Lakers single handedly. The Blazers are now 9-1 SU and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games while riding an impressive seven game run.

This stretch has catapulted the Blazers in to bet-on status and given them some much needed life blood in a division that is surrounded by lurkers. The Northwest Division is as much a group of death as there is in the NBA. Only four games separate the first place Blazers and the last place Utah Jazz.

Even with their juicy streak intact, the Portland Trail Blazers are still being sent off as a third-favorite to win the division. It?s hard to argue against the popular bet that is the Oklahoma City Thunder at +175, but shouldn?t they be ranked a bit higher than the Minnesota Timberwolves?

Northwest Division Odds -
Oklahoma City Thunder +175
Minnesota Timberwolves +250
Portland Trail Blazers +350
Denver Nuggets +650
Utah Jazz +800

Jimmy Butler might come back, but a torn meniscus is no trifling injury. It?s worth mentioning that the Wolves are just 2-3 SU and ATS in their last 5 games since the break. Plus their only two wins and covers have come against the Bulls and Kings. Granted, there?s a lot to adjust to, but the young Wolves needed Jimmy in so many ways and the team just doesn?t have the requisite depth to fill in the gap left by the 20+ point scorer.

The Wolves, Nuggets and Jazz will all stay in the race but the question remains if the Blazers hold any intrinsic value as a division winner. Let?s keep in mind that this team went 18-8 SU and ATS in the second half last season as they made a courageous push to crash the playoff party as the eighth seed. This year the stakes are much higher and this team knows it.

Where the team needs a boost is in third-year player Jusef Nurkic, who they acquired from the Nuggets around this time last year. Nurkic got off to a rip roaring start with 16.8 points and 7.9 rebounds in November but has leveled off a bit on the scoring side. He is coming off a February where he notched 13.7 points but upped his board production to 8.6. Considering that the Blazers are a below-average rebounding team, they need their star center to really come through.

And everything about Nurkic?s recent play suggests that he has it in him. He tore down 16 rebounds last night against the Lakers and is focusing on exactly what he needs to. Nurkick also fits perfectly in to the ?island of misfit toys? mentality that the Blazers have seemingly embraced along the way.

The chip on Damian Lillard?s shoulder is the size of the moon. He forms one of the elite backcourts in the league alongside CJ McCollum, and while everyone routinely focuses on their impressive complimentary skillsets, it?s the rest of the team that creates a point of difference for Portland.

Next Games (POR): vs. New York (3/6), vs Golden State (3/9), vs Miami (3/12), vs Cleveland (3/15), vs Detroit (3/17)

Ed Davis is a steal at $6.4 million a year. He rebounds, scores, does the dirty work and is a crafty defender with length and great lateral footwork. The bargain basement bench that the Blazers have with Shabazz Napier, an ever-improving Zach Collins and Davis steadies the scoring barrages offered by Lillard.

The age-old adage in the NBA is that a team is only as good as its best player, and Damian Lillard is often forgotten in the conversation. When he is on, the Blazers are absolutely there with the best in the west. He hardly ever misses a game. Dame has played in 96-percent of Portland?s games over the past six seasons, while being as a steady in production as a grandfather clock.

Portland has proven that they are a great second half team, they?re starting to fire on all cylinders and there?s constant pressure in the Northwest Division to produce. No team has been this consistent outside of Houston. Portland knows that the single advantage that they have over everyone else is a rambunctious home court, and they want that third seed badly in a showdown with a division rival. The rest of the Northwest Division is likely to populate the last three playoff spots in the conference.

What?s most important is that you recognize that Portland is on a streak worth banking on. They have a terrific opportunity to pad their lead atop the division with a five-game homestand that features matchups with Golden State and Cleveland. There are few teams in the league that are ?bet and forget? entities in the market. Even Houston has their hands full with Oklahoma City tonight as they try to keep their own streak alive. Portland is an easy take against the Knicks, and then all eyes are o that Friday night ripper against the Warriors.

Don?t believe in Dame? Think again. He?s averaged 41.5 points in two games against Golden State this season, and they?ll probably be home dogs anyways. Keep your ear close to the rails with Portland. They are screeching in to the playoffs while everyone else is looking elsewhere.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Over/under wagers for pitcher?s wins this season:

17.5 Clayton Kershaw

16.5 Max Scherzer

15.5 Chris Sale

14.5 Luis Severino

13.5 Kyle Hendricks

12.5 Johnny Cueto

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Wrapping up a winter Wednesday

13) ACC? Louisville 82, Florida State 74? Louisville?s interim coach David Padgett turned 33 last month; I?m guessing the last five months have been a blur for him, but his Cardinals played a great first half, leading 41-22 before hanging on at the end for their 20th win. Louisville will likely go on probation; has Padgett does enough to earn the full-time coaching gig?

Boston College upset NC State 91-87; they play Clemson Thursday.

12) Pac-12? Colorado 97, Arizona State 85? Sun Devils beat Xavier, Kansas before Christmas, were ranked 3rd in country at one point, but they lost five of their last six games, went 8-11 in Pac-12 play, and have zero right to bitch if they get left out of the Field of 68. Their RPI was 65 after this loss to Colorado, which made 13-21 3-pointers in this game.

Oregon State and Oregon both advanced with overtime wins; Beavers? three games with Washington this season were decided by total of 8 points.

11) A-14? UMass upset LaSalle 69-67; Explorers were 1-16 on arc, Minutemen 10-23.

10) Big X? Oklahoma State 71, Oklahoma 60? Sooners lost eight of their last 10 games, losing their last 10 games away from Norman. Bracketology people still have Oklahoma in the field of 68, but they?re not a very good team right now.

9) Mountain West? UNLV 97, Air Force 90 OT? Huge sigh of relief from the desert, as Rebels snap a 5-game losing skid and get their 20th win of the season. UNLV-Nevada Thursday; Wolf Pack crushed UNLV 101-75 in Las Vegas last week, but the Rebels won earlier in Reno.

8) Kansas center Udoka Azubuike won?t play in this week?s Big 12 tournament in Kansas City after he sprained the MCL in his left knee during practice Tuesday.

7) Los Angeles Rams are having an interesting offseason; they traded MLB Alec Ogletree to the Giants Wednesday for 4th and 6th-round draft picks- the move clears $5M in cap room, which begs the question as to just how much money they?re going to pay Aaron Donald this spring.

Ogletree was the quarterback of the defense, so it?ll be interesting to see who the new MLB will be and where that $5M in cap space is used. I?m pretty sure the Rams have five picks in the 6th round of the draft? they must think this draft is deep with talented players.

6) Missouri?s star recruit Michael Porter Jr was supposed to be America?s best freshman, but he played 2:00 in the season opener, then left with a back injury, hasn?t played since. He returns today in St Louis for the SEC tournament; how will his presence change the Tigers? chemistry?

5) Big East? St John?s 88, Georgetown 77? Hoyas beat St John?s twice during the season, but Red Storm shot 67% inside arc in this game and move on to play top-seeded Xavier Thursday. Hoyas lost their last five games; they took 32 3?s, only 30 2-point shots in this game.

4) C-USA? Tex-San Antonio 71, UTEP 58? Roadrunners went 11-7 in C-USA this year, after going 26-61 the previous five years; they?re 9-2 in last 11 games and play Marshall today.

3) SEC? South Carolina 85, Ole Miss 84? Gamecocks made 12-21 on arc, only 19-34 on foul line. Ole Miss buried a 3 from deep in left corner to cover the spread at the buzzer.

2) Sun Belt? Texas State 73, Coastal Carolina 66? Bobcats snapped a 9-game losing skid with win here; six of those nine losses were by 4 or fewer points or in OT.

1) For me, today and tomorrow are just as much fun as the first round of the NCAA tournament; dozens of games all over the country, teams either positioning for seeding next week, or trying to shock the world and get in the field of 68.

Today is 14 or 15 hours of great action; enjoy!!!
