Simmons has triple-double, 76ers beat Timberwolves
March 24, 2018

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Ben Simmons had a triple-double, Joel Embiid dazzled while getting the better of Karl-Anthony Towns, and the Philadelphia 76ers inched closer to their first playoff berth in six years with a 120-108 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night.

Simmons had 15 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists for the 10th triple-double of his rookie season. Embiid scored 19 points, and had a left-handed block of Towns, a 3-pointer and a windmill dunk in the Sixers' 20-4 run to start the third quarter.

Dario Saric added 18 points as the Sixers (42-30) won their sixth straight game, ensured a winning season and moved within one win or Detroit loss from their first postseason appearance since 2012.

Andrew Wiggins scored 16 points, and Towns had 15 points and 11 rebounds, but shot just 3 of 15 from the field. Minnesota had won two in a row.

ROCKETS 114, PELICANS 91

HOUSTON (AP) - James Harden scored 27 points in three quarters and Houston routed New Orleans Pelicans for its eighth straight victory.

The NBA-leading Rockets improved to 59-14 to overtake the 1993-94 championship team for the most wins in franchise history.

Houston never trailed and already had a huge lead to start the fourth before scoring seven straight points early in the period to make it 92-63 with 10 minutes remaining. Clint Capela had four points and a steal to lead Houston in that stretch. Capela finished with 18 points, 16 rebounds, three steals and tied a career high with six blocks.

Anthony Davis, who also sat out the fourth quarter with the game out of reach, led New Orleans with 25 points and had eight rebounds and four blocks.

PISTONS 117, BULLS 95

DETROIT (AP) - Anthony Tolliver scored 25 points, and Detroit made 13 3-pointers in the first half to rout Chicago.

The Pistons have won three of four, with the only loss in that span in overtime at Houston, but Detroit still trails Milwaukee by 5 1/2 games for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Andre Drummond had 15 points and 20 rebounds for Detroit. It was his 16th game this season with at least 20 rebounds and the 50th of his career.

Denzel Valentine led the Bulls with 18 points. They have lost five straight.

HORNETS 102, MAVERICKS 98

DALLAS (AP) - Dwight Howard had 23 rebounds and 18 points to cap an eventful four days and Charlotte held off Dallas for it third straight victory.

Howard had a career-high 30 rebounds and scored 32 points against Brooklyn on Wednesday night, then served a one-game suspension for his 16th technical foul of the season as Charlotte beat Memphis 140-79 on Thursday night. Kemba Walker had 24 points for the Hornets.

Harrison Barnes had 18 points for Dallas.

LAKERS 100, GRIZZLIES 93

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Kyle Kuzma scored 15 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter and had 10 rebounds, and Los Angeles overcame a slow start to beat Memphis.

Andrew Harrison led the Grizzlies with 20 points and nine assists.

Sunday?s 6-pack

Over/under totals for pitching wins this year:

16.5 Max Scherzer

15.5 Justin Verlander

14.5 David Price

13.5 Kyle Hendricks

13.5 Noah Syndergaard

12.5 Johnny Cueto

Quote of the Day
?I really think it could be a record-type thing, this could be another 10 years. Coach (Saban) is extremely healthy, he takes care of himself and you know, people are supposed to lose things as they get up there in age but he doesn?t at all. He doesn?t slow down. He drives himself ? he works harder than anyone in the building, regardless of whether it?s a 25-year-old or not. I think him stopping would only be because? by choice he wanted, not for any other reason. He ain?t going to slow down.?
Lane Kiffin, talking about Nick Saban

Sunday?s quiz
Who was the last offensive player the Jets drafted in the first round?

Saturday?s quiz
Lance Alworth, the great WR from the Chargers, was the first player from the AFL inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Friday?s quiz
Kevin Bacon played the losing lawyer in the climactic scene of A Few Good Men.

*********************

Sunday?s List of 13: Random weekend stuff?..

13) Loyola, Chi 79, Kansas State 62? Much like #11-seeds George Mason in 2006 and VCU in 2011, who both came from the CAA, Ramblers come from the relative obscurity of the MVC to make the Final Four. No one saw this coming.

Not only has Loyola won four NCAA tourney games, they had to win the MVC tournament or they would?ve been playing in the NIT.

Ramblers didn?t have to play #2-seed Cincinnati after the Bearcats blew a 22-point lead to Nevada. #1-seed Virginia lost to a damn #16-seed, and Loyola took advantage of all that.

Loyola?s first three NCAA tournament wins were by total of four points:
? Ramblers were down 60-55 with 2:46 left in first round vs Miami.
? Loyola needed a lucky bounce on a jumper with 0:03.6 left to nip Tennessee, 63-62
? Loyola was down 20-8 early against Nevada, hung on at the end of its 69-68 win.

12) By way of comparison, two of George Mason?s four NCAA tourney wins in 2011 were by double figures- they were an underdog in three of the four games.

VCU had to win an additional play-in game, but four of their five NCAA tourney wins were by double figure margins- they were an underdog in all five of those wins.

11) A final question on the George Mason/VCU thing; does Porter Moser jump for bigger money? He?ll be in demand. Neither coach at Mason/VCU bolted right away.

In 2006, Jim Larranaga was coach at George Mason; he went 107-59 at Mason the next five years, then jumped to Miami, the ACC and a lot more money.

In 2011, Shaka Smart was VCU?s coach; he went 109-35 the next four years before going to Texas and the big $$$ of the Big X.

10) Michigan 58, Florida State 54? Seminoles went 8:00 without a basket down stretch, then made some questionable decisions on who to foul in last 1:30.

Unusual stat; in the West Region final the last 21 years, underdogs are 17-4 vs spread.

9) I love a good coincidence; USC just hired an assistant basketball coach who has two sons, both of whom are 6-10 or taller and are both in high school. Go figure.

Trojans hired Eric Mobley, an AAU coach for the last 11 years. From ESPN.com:

?His oldest son, Isaiah, is a 6-foot-10 high school junior and the No. 44-ranked prospect in the Class of 2019, while his youngest son, Evan, is 6-foot-10 and considered one of the top players in the country in the Class of 2020.?

I wonder where they?ll go to college?

8) Steph Curry is out with Grade 2 MCL sprain; he might be back for the start of the playoffs.

7) Ferris State 71, Northern State 69? Fun game to watch, for the D2 national title.

Ferris State?s president played the clarinet in the school band during this game. I?m guessing the university president at Kentucky or Duke doesn?t still play in the school band.

Ferris State?s mascot is a bulldog; I?m disappointed they?re not the Ferris Wheels.

6) Dustin Johnson hit a golf ball 489 yards Friday; seriously, he was on a 573-yard par-5 and was 84 yards from the hole for his second shot.

5) It bothers me when baseball teams shift and leave third base totally uncovered; they?re just giving up a base hit to anyone with the basic ability to bunt.

I can see doing it against powerful lefties like Bryce Harper or Freddie Freeman, but against guys who aren?t so great, to me it is just overthinking something that is fairly simple. Maybe the analytics people are trying to justify their position by micromanaging too much.

4) Apparently it costs $30 to park at A?s games this season; for their four home games with the Giants, it?ll cost $50 to park unless you say ?Go A?s!!!? at the gate. Trolling Giants? fans seems a little immature. Paying $30 to park seems a bit excessive.

3) There are rumors around that Gonzaga will be jumping from the WCC to the Mountain West as early as next season, which would give the MW an even dozen teams. Gonzaga is supposed to announce their decision in the next two weeks.

2) #1-seed Kansas is an underdog to Duke today; the previous nine #1-seeds who got points in the regional final went 2-7 SU, 3-6 against the spread.

1) Few years ago, I was at an AAU basketball tournament at Bishop Gorman HS in Las Vegas; I?m sitting in bleachers watching this game when one of the coaches takes his cellphone out while play was going on, looks at a text message, then glares at the couple sitting in front of me and says:

?If you text me again, he?ll never get in!!!!?

Can?t make stuff like that up.

Cavaliers top Nets for 5th straight win
March 25, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden had a triple-double with 18 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds in three quarters and the Houston Rockets rolled to their 60th victory, beating the Atlanta Hawks 118-99 on Sunday night.

It was the second straight game where the Rockets never trailed after a rout of New Orleans on Saturday night that set a franchise record for wins in a season. The NBA-leading Rockets have won nine straight and became the 18th team in NBA history to reach 60 wins in the 74th game of the season.

Houston was up by 24 at halftime and the Hawks cut into the lead with a solid third quarter, but never really threatened, allowing Harden to watch the final quarter from the bench for the second night in a row.

Taurean Prince scored 28 and Isaiah Taylor had 26 for the Hawks, who have lost three in a row and nine of their last 10.

Harden, who had 12 assists by halftime, had his fourth triple-double this season and the 35th of his career.

CAVALIERS 121, NETS 114

NEW YORK (AP) - LeBron James had 37 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Brooklyn Nets for their fifth straight victory.

James kept up his latest sensational stretch by going 14 for 19 from the floor. He reached 2,000 points in a season for the 10th time, joining Karl Malone and Michael Jordan as the only players in NBA history to do that.

Kevin Love added 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who came in averaging 122.5 points during the streak and just about reached that even with a slow start.

Former Cavs guard Joe Harris scored a career-high 30 points for the Nets, who lost their third straight.

BUCKS 106, SPURS 103

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo returned from an ankle injury to score 25 points, and the Milwaukee Bucks held on in the final few minutes after building a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter against the San Antonio Spurs.

Antetokounmpo added 10 rebounds to pick up his 37th double-double of the season.

The Spurs trailed by 15 points with 8 minutes left before rallying to get within three with 35 seconds left on Pau Gasol's putback. Eric Bledsoe missed a 3-pointer on the other end for the Bucks. San Antonio rushed down court to get one last shot off, but Milwaukee's Khris Middleton blocked Dejounte Murray's 3-point attempt from the right wing with 3.7 seconds left.

The loss snapped the Spurs' six-game winning streak. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 34 points.

CELTICS 104, KINGS 93

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Terry Rozier scored a season-high 33 points and nearly matched the Celtics' franchise record for 3-pointers, Jaylen Brown made consecutive buckets to break open a close game in the fourth quarter, and Boston held on to beat the Sacramento Kings.

Making his sixth start in place of injured All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, Rozier shot 12 of 16, including 8 of 12 on 3s, in the rookie's most impressive game of the season. Rozier, who had been averaging 16.2 points in Irving's absence, also had five rebounds and three assists. The eight 3s were one shy of the Celtics' single-game record of nine shared by Isaiah Thomas and Antoine Walker.

Brown had 19 points in his return after missing two weeks with a concussion.

Buddy Hield scored 24 points for Sacramento.

JAZZ 110, WARRIORS 91

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Rudy Gobert had 17 points and 15 rebounds and the Utah Jazz pulled away from the undermanned, injury-plagued Golden State Warriors in the third quarter on the way to a victory.

Quinn Cook had 17 points and eight assists as defending champion Golden State played without its four injured All-Stars and was forced to use yet another makeshift starting lineup. Before the game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr ruled out Stephen Curry for the first round of the playoffs because of a sprained left knee - while Curry vowed to do everything in his rehab power to prove Kerr wrong and return sooner.

Donovan Mitchell scored 21 points for the Jazz, coming off a four-point overtime loss at San Antonio on Friday. Joe Ingles added 14 points with four 3-pointers, eight assists and six rebounds.

PACERS 113, HEAT 107, OT

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Victor Oladipo had 23 points and five assists to help the Indiana Pacers clinch a playoff berth.

Thaddeus Young had 22 points, nine rebounds and five steals, and Bojan Bogdanovic added 18 points and eight rebounds for the Pacers, who secured their seventh appearance in the postseason in the last eight seasons.

Tyler Johnson made five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points, James Johnson had 15 points and nine rebounds, and Bam Adebayo added 14 points for the Heat, who split the four-game season series.

Miami coach Erik Spoelstra missed the first game of his career, leaving Indianapolis on Saturday after learning his wife Nikki was entering labor. Assistant coach Dan Craig filled in and Spoelstra is expected to return for Miami's home game against Cleveland on Tuesday.

KNICKS 101, WIZARDS 97

WASHINGTON (AP) - Trey Burke scored 19 points in his first start in exactly three years, leading eight players in double figures as the New York Knicks defeated the wavering Washington Wizards.

Courtney Lee added eight of his 13 points in the fourth quarter to send the Wizards to a third straight loss. It's the second three-game skid of the season for Washington and both have come in the latter portion of a 26-game stretch without All-Star point guard John Wall, who underwent surgery on his left knee in late January. Wall returned to full-contact practice on Saturday.

Bradley Beal scored 14 points, but shot just 5 of 17 for Washington, which led only once after the early stages of the second quarter. Otto Porter Jr. added 13 points and 10 rebounds as the Wizards remained in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, but lost for the eighth time in their last 12 games.

CLIPPERS 117, RAPTORS 106

TORONTO (AP) - Lou Williams scored 26 points against his former team, Tobias Harris had 20 and the Los Angeles Clippers overcame an 18-point first-quarter deficit to beat the Toronto Raptors.

Montrezl Harrell scored 19 points and Milos Teodosic had 15 as the Clippers boosted their playoff hopes by winning for the second time in seven games and snapping a three-game losing streak north of the border. Austin Rivers scored 11 points and DeAndre Jordan had 14 rebounds to help the Clippers wrap up a four-game road trip on a winning note. Los Angeles went 2-2 on the trip, and has won 13 of 20 on the road.

Jonas Valanciunas had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Raptors, who dropped to 30-7 at home, the best mark in the NBA. It was a tough night for Toronto All-Stars DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry. DeRozan scored 11 points, making three of 12 field goal attempts. Lowry had 11 points and eight assists, shooting 4 for 9.

TRAIL BLAZERS 108, THUNDER 105

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - C.J. McCollum scored 34 points to help the Portland Trail Blazers edge the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Damian Lillard scored 24 points, and Jusuf Nurkic added 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Trail Blazers, who swept all four games with the Thunder this season. Portland doubled its lead to games over the Thunder for third place in the Western Conference.

Russell Westbrook led the Thunder with 23 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Steven Adams had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Jerami Grant added 17 point.

Oklahoma City got possession trailing by two with 18.5 seconds remaining. Oklahoma City's Carmelo Anthony got trapped in the corner and forced his way through before turning the ball over. Westbrook fouled Portland's Al-Farouq Aminu with 7 seconds to play. Aminu made the first free throw and missed the second, giving the Thunder one more chance. Anthony missed a 3-pointer as time expired.

Monday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

13) Kansas 85, Duke 81 OT? Jayhawks were 13-36 on arc in this game, 17-33 inside the arc; Newman scored 32 points and Kansas is headed to the Alamo for the Final Four.

Grayson Allen went 3-13 in his last college game; Mavin Bagley was 5-9 in 44:00- if you?re coaching Duke, you?re sick that Bagley got only nine shots in a game this close, especially since he?ll never play for Duke again.

12) Villanova 71, Texas Tech 59? Wildcats were 29-35 on foul line; Tech was 14-18 in game where teams combined to go 9-44 on arc. Villanova is in Final Four for second time in three years; they?re 11-1 in last 12 NCAA tournament games.

11) Final Four pointspreads:
Michigan (-5.5) over Loyola-Chicago
Villanova (-5) over Kansas

10) Since 1987, when two #1-seeds play in the national semifinals, the underdogs are 8-2 against the spread.

9) Was thinking about Gonzaga?s potential move to the Mountain West; I have no idea why they would do that. Gonzaga doesn?t have football, so their TV deal for basketball would only net them an additional $375,000 a year? not much at all.

Mountain West is a better league, but hardly a power league; only reason they got two teams in the NCAA?s this year is because Nevada got beat in the conference tournament. Gonzaga is the king of the WCC; its good to be the king- they?re like UNLV was in the Big West during the peak years of Jerry Tarkanian?s coaching tenure in Las Vegas.

To me, adding Gonzaga would really help the Mountain West, not sure how it helps Gonzaga.

8) Saturday night, Florida State was down 58-54 in the last 0:15; they missed a 3-pointer, then didn?t foul in the last 10 or 11 seconds, and Michigan ran out the clock.

The non-foul occurred right in front of the FSU bench; it seemed like someone on the bench told the Seminole player not to foul, so they let the game end, despite a foul giving them a (very small) chance to win the game. A small chance is still a chance; it happens. Ask Louisville.

As you know, I spend a ridiculous amount of time watching college basketball; can?t remember a situation like this happening before, especially a team whose season ends with a loss. Why give up?

Leonard Hamilton wasn?t happy when he was asked about it after the game. If I was the AD at Florida State, I?d be asking him about it again when we met back in Tallahassee.

7) Duke was down five with 0:11 left in OT Sunday; unlike Florida State, they fouled.

6) Atlanta Braves cut P Scott Kazmir, eating $16M he is owed this year. Kazmir had a rough outing Saturday, blamed it on a 90-100 bullpen session he threw Wednesday, saying he didn?t know he?d be pitching Saturday. Now he is out of a job, though he still gets paid.

5) Phillies gave 2B prospect Scott Kingery a 6-year, $24M contract, which eliminates service time as an issue in making Kingery a major leaguer right now.

Lot of teams delay bringing their prospects up to the majors, to delay their arbitration years from kicking in.

4) Then there is Arizona, which sent OF Yasmany Tomas down to AAA, despite owing him $46M over the next three years. RF Stephen Souza is on the DL and they still sent Tomas down, which tells us they?re pretty sour on him.

3) Twins? coach Howard Johnson, the old Mets? 3B, broke bones in his face this weekend when he was hit by a foul ball in the Minnesota dugout. Hope he is feeling better soon.

2) I?m still wondering why the Red Sox fired Terry Francona; Boston averaged 93 wins a year under Francona, winning two World Series with no losing seasons- they were 90-72 his last year, albeit with some off-field hijinx that had people saying Francona ran too loose a ship.

They?ve won one World Series in six years since he left and now have an entry-level manager in Alex Cora. Curious decision.

1? Mets manager Mickey Callaway is the 49th major league pitcher who later became a major league manager. Pitching is obviously the most essential element of baseball; you?d think more former pitchers would?ve become managers.

Monday's Essentials
March 26, 2018

Game of the Night - Boston at Phoenix, NBA TV 10:05 ET

The Celtics were down at halftime in Sacramento on Sunday, surrendering 60 points against a Kings team missing leading scorer Zach Randolph. On the heels of announcing that Kyrie Irving would miss at least three weeks after undergoing ?minor? knee surgery on Saturday, Boston wasn?t putting together a reassuring performance through 24 minutes against one of the league?s worst teams.

That Brad Stevens got everyone to buy in on clamping down defensively in what ended up being a 104-93 victory where the Celtics gave up just 33 second-half points is a great sign, because they?re no longer going to have one of the game?s top closers to pull games out down the stretch.

The NBA schedule stops for no one, and it is looking increasingly likely that Boston will tip off Game 1 of the playoffs at home without its top two offseason acquisitions, Irving and Gordon Hayward, who went down in the regular-season?s opening minute.

Boston has been cursed by injuries this month, the latest of which is the most significant since the team was counting on Irving?s championship pedigree to help serve as the stabilizing force for a young roster. Al Horford is capable of leading the group in that capacity, while Marcus Smart?s return from a broken thumb should help the team get out of a first round where they likely won?t be able to count on Irving?s contributions until late in a series.

?We hope. Who knows? Marcus was six to eight weeks before basketball activity and Kyrie is three to six before basketball activity,? Stevens told the Boston Herald prior to Sunday?s game in Sacramento. ?Again, that?s basketball activity. There?s a big difference between that and playing, so we don?t know when we?re going to have those guys back.

?I?ve texted with him. Left him a message this morning and haven?t heard back. But the timeline will be determined on how he feels and how quickly he can get back out on the court and everything else. There?s still a process after that, too, to be ready to play in a game.?

Smart tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right shooting hand upon diving for a loose ball against the Pacers on March 11. Second-year wing Jaylen Brown has missed time due to a concussion and is just getting back in a rhythm. Promising German big man Daniel Theis after undergoing knee surgery early in the month. After coming out of the All-Star break with four straight wins, bad breaks have put a major damper on their aspirations of winning another Eastern Conference title.

Considering they?ll be shorthanded throughout April, it?s unlikely that Boston will be able to catch Toronto for the top record in the East. The teams will meet at TD Garden on March 31 and at the Air Canada Centre on April 4, so they will decide things on the floor. The Raptors appear to have a significant edge, carrying a 3.5-game cushion into the week in addition to a completely healthy roster despite losing at home against the Clippers.

Toronto will also have three full days without action to prepare for the Celtics, who are continuing a four-game road trip with tonight?s second of a back-to-back against depleted Phoenix. Boston will face Utah on Wednesday and is currently in a stretch where it is playing eight of 10 games away from home, so we?ll see how resilient they are after coming up with a big second half in California?s capital city.

Terry Rozier has been handed the reins to the Celtics? offense and should be the primary catalyst at both ends of the floor. He went 12-for-16 from the floor against the Kings, hitting eight 3-pointers to score a career-high 33 points. He was one 3-pointer shy of tying Boston?s all-time record for single-game makes from beyond the arc.

Brown contributed 19 points in his return from the NBA?s concussion protocol, so it remains to be seen whether the Celtics are cautious with him tonight in spite of their lack of depth. Marcus Morris sat in Sacramento after spraining an ankle in Friday?s win in Portland, so winning in Phoenix is likely to hinge on getting production from Greg Monroe, Semi Ojeleye and Abdel Nader off the bench.

The Suns could provide a stiffer challenge if Devin Booker is able to return from a hand sprain that has sidelined him the last few games, but his status is currently up in the air. There?s no line on this one yet as a result. Forward T.J. Warren is doubtful due to a knee injury that has kept him out of the mix, allowing rookie Josh Jackson to get more touches in the offense.

Phoenix has lost a league-worst 11 straight games and enters this game with the NBA?s worst record, a half-game back of Memphis. The Suns are 1-21 since Feb. 2, defeating only the Grizzlies. They?ve beaten only two teams with winning records since mid-December, so this is a game the Celtics should be able to claim despite their injury woes.

Boston won its 50th game of the season against Sacramento and is closing in on its projected win total (53.5) in spite of March?s attrition. Even if they collapse in April, the Celtics are unlikely to finish any lower than second in the East, which would currently draw Giannis Antetokounmpo-led Milwaukee. Miami, who is 2-1 against the Celtics and have received a boost from Kelly Olynyk of late, is another potential first-round foe, sitting in eighth place as the week begins.

The Westgate Superbook gave Boston 4-to-1 odds to get out of the Eastern Conference when updating their numbers last Monday, ranking it behind the Raptors (5/6) and Cavs (7/4). Irving?s knee surgery won?t help matters, but he?s expected to make a full recovery so I don?t anticipate anyone overreacting to his absence. It will be interesting to see what happens with Golden State considering Stephen Curry is expected to miss the first round of the Western Conference playoffs following his own knee trouble.

The Celtics are playing only their second back-to-back since the All-Star break -- their first this entire month. They won a road back-to-back at Detroit and New York on Feb. 23-24 to improve to 7-4 on the second night of such situations this season. They've got two more remaining in April, with the next one coming in Milwaukee and Toronto next week, making it the most important of the season.

Injury Report

The Pistons and Hornets probably have to realistically win out in order to make the playoffs, so both take the court as home favorites in must-win situations.

The Lakers are making their first trip into Detroit's new Little Caesar's Arena and should have Julius Randle available despite an ankle tweak suffered in Saturday's win in Memphis. He's shot nearly 58 percent from the field this month, averagaing 22.8 points and 9.8 rebounds and should again be the team's primary catalyst with Brandon Ingram still out due to a hip injury. He's listed as doubtful, while Isaiah Thomas has been ruled out due to a sore hip.

Detroit may be without Stanley Johnson, who left Saturday's game against the Bulls with a right glute injury.

Nicolas Batum has been out with an achilles injury that the Hornets have persevered through, but he's been upgraded to questionable and may participate against the visiting Knicks. Cody Zeller (knee) remains out, while New York big man Kyle O'Quinn is questionable with a hip strain.

The Nuggets won't have shooting guard Gary Harris against the 76ers since he's targeting a Friday return from a knee injury that's cost him the last few games. Denver has won consecutive games but remains in last place in the Northwest Division, 1.5 games behind Utah and Minnesota in the race for the final few playoff spots available in the West.

The Timberwolves are getting closer to getting Jimmy Bulter back from a knee injury, but will have to make due without him tonight against Memphis. Derrick Rose has provided a boost, but is dealing with an ankle issue and may not be available against Memphis.

The Grizzlies won't have Tyreke Evans available again and list Chandler Parsons as questionable due to knee soreness.

Fultz helps 76ers beat Nuggets, 123-104
March 26, 2018

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Markelle Fultz had 10 points and eight assists in his first game since October, helping the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Denver Nuggets 123-104 on Monday night.

The Sixers and their fans wanted the No. 1 pick to play and - after five often-confusing months - they got him.

The first pick of the 2017 draft shot an air ball, had three shots blocked and artfully attacked the lane, flashing glimpses of what has made him both a mystery project and prominent prospect.

With a playoff berth clinched for the first time since 2012, the 76ers and Fultz decided the time was right for the guard to return from an injured shoulder and busted confidence that had cost him all but four games of his rookie season.

Joel Embiid had 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Sixers. Will Barton led Denver with 25 points.

GRIZZLIES 101, TIMBERWOLVES 93

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Wayne Selden scored 23 points, Marc Gasol had 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, and the Grizzlies snapped a 17-game road losing streak

Selden and Gasol each hit four 3-pointers as Memphis went 15 of 31 from beyond the arc while dealing a blow to Minnesota's playoff hopes.

The Timberwolves (42-33) dropped to eighth in the Western Conference standings, a half-game back of idle Utah.

Jeff Teague had 25 points and seven assists for Minnesota, which lost its second straight game and dropped to 6-7 since All-Star Jimmy Butler was lost to a knee injury.

HORNETS 137, KNICKS 128, OT

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kemba Walker had 11 points of his 31 points and three assists in overtime, and Charlotte earned its fourth straight victory.

Walker hit a late 3-pointer to help send the game into overtime and then took over.

Walker was 4 for 4 in the extra period with three 3-pointers to outduel New York's Trey Burke, who finished with a career-high 42 points on 19-of-31 shooting and 12 assists.

Dwight Howard had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Hornets.

Michael Beasley added 27 points for the Knicks, who fell to 9-30 on the road.

CELTICS 102, SUNS 94

PHOENIX (AP) - Jayson Tatum scored 23 points, Marcus Morris added 20 in three quarters before leaving with an injury and Boston beat Phoenix.

Tatum surpassed 1,000 points for the season, and Boston won its fourth straight to move to three games behind the Toronto Raptors for first place in the Eastern Conference.

Morris, a former Sun, re-injured a sprained right ankle that forced him out of the Celtics' game Sunday at Sacramento. He didn't play in the fourth quarter.

Josh Jackson led the Suns with 23 points. He has scored 15 or more in seven straight games, but the Suns lost their 12th consecutive game and have dropped 27 of 29.

PISTONS 112, LAKERS 106

DETROIT (AP) - Reggie Jackson scored 20 points and Reggie Bullock had 16, leading the Pistons to the victory.

Detroit (34-40) won for the fourth time in five games, but trails idle Miami by five games for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

With Blake Griffin reduced to 24 minutes due to foul trouble, reserve Anthony Tolliver added 15 points as the Pistons put six players in double figures.

Julius Randle had 22 points and 11 rebounds for Los Angeles, and Lonzo Ball finished with 15 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds. Kyle Kuzma had 20 points and 11 boards.

He?ll say the right things. He?ll come in and represent well. I think he kind of represents what Cleveland is. And then if I was one of the New York teams, I?d take Josh (Rosen) like that. I think they?re both going to be great pros.?
Jim Mora, who was ROSEN?S coach at UCLA last year

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??..

13) Allow me to start today with a rant??

Texas-Arlington?s basketball team went 72-33 the last three years, 37-19 in conference games, but they didn?t win the Sun Belt tourney in the last 10 years- their only NCAA appearance was in 2008, which was the second year as head coach for Scott Cross, a UTA alum.

Tex-Arlington fired Cross Monday, after a 21-13 season when the Mavericks had the most experienced team in America, starting five seniors. Why?

Firing a mid-major coach who is an alumnus and is an honest guy (the school?s statement went out of its way to say so) and who won 72 games the last three years? No bueno.

You wonder why coaches break the rules so they can win? Stuff like that is why??

12) Whoever the next coach is at Arlington has a full rebuild on his hands; of the eight players who played in the Sun Belt final vs Georgia State, seven were seniors.

11) I saw this on Twitter Monday night and I?m borrowing (stealing) it. The only seven players who hit 2+ homers in an Opening Day game more than once:

Adam Dunn, Juan Gonzalez, Eddie Mathews, Raul Mondesi, Xavier Nady, Albert Pujols, Joe Torre.

10) Bronx 1B Greg Bird is out 6-8 weeks because of an ankle injury that requires surgery; they could move Neil Walker to 1B and play young Tyler Wade at 2B.

9) I?m watching Billions on Showtime (a great show) Sunday night and one of the characters goes into a New York City deli and orders an egg cream, which looks like a milkshake but I have no idea what it really is. It looked good, so I did some research.

Several people had no idea what I was talking about, but my cousin hooked me up with some knowledge: 1/2 cup of whole milk, one cup of seltzer, two tablespoons of chocolate syrup.

I?ll report back when I have one of these and let you know if they?re any good.

8) There are 32 NFL teams, two coordinators per team. Of those 64 high-paying jobs, 31 of them have changed hands since last season ended. Football coaches are nomads.

7) Los Angeles Rams signed Ndamukong Suh to a 1-year, $14M deal; Rams had 6th-most cap space in the league before this signing- their defensive line should be really good.

6) ESPN?s Chris Mortensen predicts the college QB?s will be drafted in this order next month:

?Darnold, Allen, Mayfield, Rosen?

Surprising to me that Mayfield passed Rosen, since Rosen is considered the best pure passer of the rookie QB?s right now. As always, the draft will be interesting.

5) NASCAR race got snowed out in Virginia Sunday; weird having a car race live on TV at 2:00 on a Monday afternoon.

4) RIP Wayne Huizenga, 80; he founded three Fortune 500 companies (Waste Management , Blockbuster and AutoNation), and also owned the Dolphins-Marlins-Florida Panthers.

RIP Zeke Upshaw 26, a player in the G-League who collapsed during a game last week and later passed away, apparently due to heart failure.

3) Sounds like Tubby Smith will surface as the coach at High Point, his alma mater. Panthers fired former North Carolina player Scott Cherry after nine years as coach, despite his going 68-36 in Big South games the last six years.

2) According to the Associated Press, the average salary in major league baseball is on track to be around the same as last year?s $4.45 million, maybe slightly higher.

1? Daytime television is horrendous, except for March, when MLB Network shows spring training games every day. With baseball season starting Thursday, that?ll be the end of good daytime TV for 11 months. Unless you like politics, but I?m not one of those people.
