Wednesday?s 6-pack

? Chiefs are trading QB Alex Smith to the Redskins; they get a 3rd round draft pick and CB Kendrick Fuller- they save $17M by trading Smith.

? Smith gets $94M for four years from Washington, $71M of it guaranteed, but is he better than Kirk Cousins?

? Rockets 114, Magic 107? James Harden had 60 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds.

? Cavaliers? Kevin Love broke his left hand, is out 6-8 weeks.

? Syracuse is down to six healthy scholarship basketball players.

? Miami Hurricanes? Bruce Brown had foot surgery, is out 6-8 weeks.

Quote of the Day
?There was a feeling in the room, an unspoken knowledge that we were witnessing something that would never happen again, a moment in history being recorded, an official record of something so many people are interested about.?
Ken Rodgers, NFL Films, on the Parcells/Belichick documentary later this week

Wednesday?s quiz
Who is the only person to be head coach in a Super Bowl and also play in the NBA?

Tuesday?s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, Kevin Costner plays the GM of the Cleveland Browns.

Monday?s quiz
Ground Hog Day is later this week; the Ground Hog sees or doesn?t see his shadow in Punxsutawney, PA

**********************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??

13) West Virginia?s basketball team got thrown under the bus by their athletic department when the school joined the Big X six years ago.

You look at their nine basketball road trips; the closest Big X rival to Morgantown is Iowa State, which is 860 miles away. Lot of long road trips in the cold of winter, all so the football team would have a good league to play in. Hope it is worth it.

Basketball team would?ve been fine playing in the Big East or the A-14, or even the ACC. Look at a map and plot the 10 teams in the Big X; it is weird to see how far West Virginia is from everyone else.

12) Two things about the Blake Griffin-to-Detroit trade:
a) I wouldn?t be too eager to trade with any team Jerry West works for (Clippers)
b) Blake Griffin has missed 84 games the last three years, and this year isn?t over.

11) 18 players on the Patriots? 53-man roster are undrafted players, which is a lot. Eagles have nine undrafted players on their roster.

10) There is a new Arena Football team here in Albany this spring; 300 people showed up for an open tryout Saturday, at an indoor facility in Halfmoon. Wonder if any of them will make the squad, which starts play April 14.

Think it might actually be harder to make an Arena League team as a walk-on, since there really aren?t special teams the way there are in the NFL.

9) Jacksonville QB Blake Bortles played all season with a wrist injury that needs surgery; the team knew this before the season? looks like Bortles will play for $19M next year, the $$ the Jaguars to give him if he is on the roster March 14.

8) Washington Wizards star John Wall is having his knee scoped, will be out 6-8 weeks. Right now, Wizards are #6 seed in the East- can they stay there?

7) I?m a big fan of the TV show Suits on USA Network; one of the actresses on the show is a woman named Meghan Markle who will soon marry Prince Harry in England, so she?s leaving the show after this spring?s episodes.

Read Tuesday that Patrick Adams will also leave the show after this season; his character (Mike) is one of the two main characters in the show, so interesting to see how they?ll proceed moving forward.

6) Former New Mexico basketball player Hugh Greenwood now plays Australian Rules Football for the Adelaide Crows in the AFL. Tough sport.

5) Carolina Hurricanes just got sold to a guy who says the team might play some games in Hartford Whalers throwback uniforms? the Hurricanes moved to Raleigh from Hartford 21 years ago. Whalers had green uniforms with an awesome logo; this is a good idea.

4) Doug Pederson is bringing Brett Favre in to speak to the Eagles Saturday night. Pederson was Favre?s backup for seven years in Green Bay.

3) Milwaukee is the smallest TV market in the major leagues; they averaged 31,282 fans a game last year because they were smart enough to build a retractable dome in a cold-weather city, so fans don?t have to suffer while they?re watching the game.

2) Arkansas is paying former football coach Bret Bielema $11,395,000 as a going away present; if he gets 36 monthly payments thru 2020, that works out to $316,527.78 a month.

1? I?d be remiss if I didn?t point out that Tuesday was the 18th anniversary of the greatest NFL game ever played: Rams 23, Titans 16 in Super Bowl XXXIV.

Think about Falcons-Patriots last year and SB XXXIV was a similar game, except the team that stormed back from behind fell just short of winning??thank God.

Ducks stop Bruins' point streak at 18 games with 3-1 win
January 31, 2018

BOSTON (AP) Adam Henrique scored twice and the Anaheim Ducks ended Boston's 18-game point streak with a 3-1 victory over the Bruins on Tuesday night.

Jakob Silfverberg also scored for the Ducks, the first team to beat the Bruins in regulation since Washington's 5-3 win Dec. 14 at Boston. Cam Fowler and Rickard Rakell had two assists apiece.

John Gibson made 25 saves before leaving in the third period with an undisclosed injury. Ryan Miller played the final 7:25 and nearly completed a shutout for the Ducks before Ryan Spooner scored for Boston with 41 seconds left.

Henrique scored into an empty net with 6.1 seconds remaining to seal it for the Ducks, who halted Boston's five-game winning streak and a stretch of 18 games with at least one point (14-0-4), which tied for the second-longest in franchise history.

The Ducks have won eight straight against the Bruins, who haven't beaten Anaheim since a 3-2 shootout win on Oct. 21, 2013.

PENGUINS 5, SHARKS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Evgeni Malkin got his 12th career hat trick and Bryan Rust scored two goals as surging Pittsburgh rallied past San Jose.

Malkin's 24th goal of the season late in the second period tied it. His 25th early in the third gave Pittsburgh the lead for good and his 26th rolled into an empty net with just more than a minute remaining as the Penguins won for the eighth time in 10 games.

Matt Murray stopped 40 shots in his first start since the death of his father this month.

Brent Burns and Logan Couture scored power-play goals for the Sharks but San Jose dropped its second straight game without Joe Thornton, who is out indefinitely with a right leg injury.

JETS 3, LIGHTNING 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Michael Hutchinson made 23 saves in his first NHL start of the season to help Winnipeg beat league-leading Tampa Bay.

Patrik Laine scored his team-leading 23rd goal for the Jets (30-13-8). Kyle Connor and Bryan Little also scored, and Blake Wheeler had two assists.

Rookie forward Matthew Peca scored for Tampa Bay (34-13-3), which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Both teams let their starting goaltenders - ranked first and second in wins - have a night off after they took part in last weekend's All-Star festivities at Tampa Bay.

It was the first of 10 straight home games for the Jets, who have won seven in a row at Bell MTS Place and are 18-3-1 there this season.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 4, FLAMES 2

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Jonathan Marchessault got the go-ahead goal and added an assist as Vegas scored three times in the final two minutes to stun Calgary.

Just 10 seconds after Erik Haula tied it 2-all at 18:14 of the third period, Marchessault got around Mark Giordano and beat Flames goalie Mike Smith over his glove.

David Perron scored into an empty net and Reilly Smith also had a goal for Western Conference-leading Vegas in the opener of a six-game road trip.

Matthew Tkachuk got his seventh goal in the last eight games for the Flames, who lost in regulation for the first time in 12 games. They had gone 7-0-4 since last losing in regulation on Dec. 29. Sam Bennett also scored for Calgary.

WILD 3, BLUE JACKETS 2, SO

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Zach Parise and Chris Stewart scored in the shootout as Minnesota topped Columbus.

Devan Dubnyk had 28 saves for the Wild (27-18-5), who earned their 10th road win of the season. Jason Zucker scored his 20th goal, and Charlie Coyle added his fifth in the third period.

The Blue Jackets (27-19-4) lost for the fourth time in six games. Sergei Bobrovsky made 41 stops, Artemi Panarin had a goal and an assist and David Savard scored his third of the season.

PANTHERS 4, ISLANDERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Harri Sateri stopped 32 shots for his first career victory and Florida beat New York.

Mike Matheson, Evgenii Dadonov, Keith Yandle and Jonathan Huberdeau scored for the Panthers, who snapped a three-game skid and improved to 3-6-1 since closing December with five straight wins.

Sateri was making his fourth start with Roberto Luongo and James Reimer sidelined by lower-body injuries. The 28-year-old rookie, who spent the previous three seasons in the KHL, made his NHL debut Jan. 2 at Minnesota and came in 0-3-0 with a 4.59 goals-against average.

Adam Pelech scored for the Islanders, who have lost four of six. Jaroslav Halak finished with 36 saves.

HURRICANES 2, SENATORS 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Sebastian Aho and Victor Rask scored in the third period as Carolina edged slumping Ottawa.

Cam Ward made 29 saves for Carolina in the opener of an eight-game homestand, its longest of the season. The Hurricanes returned from the All-Star break with their second consecutive win after dropping six of eight.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored and Craig Anderson made 37 saves for the Senators, who have lost six in a row.

DEVILS 3, SABRES 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Taylor Hall scored in his first game after missing three with an injury to his right hand, and New Jersey snapped a four-game skid with a win over Buffalo.

Kyle Palmieri scored an empty-netter and added an assist, and Miles Wood also scored for the Devils. Backup goalie Keith Kinkaid stopped 27 shots in his first game since missing three with a groin injury. He started in place of Cory Schneider, who missed his fourth game since also hurting his groin.

Sabres defenseman Jake McCabe spoiled Kinkaid's shutout bid by scoring a power-play goal with 5:02 remaining.

BLUES 3, CANADIENS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Carter Hutton made 33 saves and Ivan Barbashev broke a scoreless tie in the second period to help St. Louis defeat Montreal.

The Blues, who beat Montreal for the fifth successive time, have won five of six overall. The struggling Canadiens have lost 11 of 15.

Patrik Berglund pushed the lead to 2-0 with a power-play goal early in the third. Alexander Steen added an empty-netter with 2:17 left.

Charles Hudon ended Hutton's shutout bid by scoring a 6-on-4 goal with 1:07 remaining.

Hutton has started the Blues' last six games and appears to have supplanted Jake Allen as their No. 1 netminder. A 32-year-old journeyman, Hutton improved to 13-4-1. He has stopped 94 of his past 96 shots and is 8-1-1 in his last 10 starts.

BLACKHAWKS 2, PREDATORS 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Anton Forsberg made 42 saves, and Vinnie Hinostroza had a goal and an assist in Chicago's victory over Nashville.

Last-place Chicago, which needs a big finish to get into the playoffs, returned from the All-Star break with its second straight win. David Kampf also scored for the Blackhawks.

Kyle Turris had Nashville's goal and Juuse Saros made 29 saves. The Predators lost in regulation for the first time since Jan. 2.

KINGS 3, STARS 0

DALLAS (AP) - Darcy Kuemper made 28 saves in his ninth career shutout, leading Los Angeles over Dallas.

Paul LaDue, Drew Doughty and Alec Martinez scored as Los Angeles earned its second consecutive win. The Kings are among a group of playoff contenders with 59 points, one behind Dallas.

Ben Bishop made 39 saves for the Stars, who dropped their second straight game but retained a one-point lead for the first Western Conference wild card. Dallas came up empty on each of its four power plays against the NHL's best penalty killers.

CANUCKS 4, AVALANCHE 3, OT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Sven Baertschi scored 1:07 into overtime and Vancouver defeated Colorado.

Bo Horvat, Michael Del Zotto and Daniel Sedin also scored for the Canucks. Jacob Markstrom stopped 27 shots, and Christopher Tanev had three assists.

Gabriel Landeskog scored twice and J.T. Compher had the other goal for Colorado, which got 22 saves from Jonathan Bernier.

Mikko Rantanen added two assists for the Avalanche, who lost leading scorer Nathan MacKinnon to an upper-body injury in the second period. Colorado has dropped three in row after winning 10 straight games.

Capitals rally past Flyers 5-3
January 31, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Chandler Stephenson, Andre Burakovsky and T.J. Oshie ended lengthy goal droughts to help the Washington Capitals rally past the Philadelphia Flyers 5-3 on Wednesday night.

Stephenson scored twice after going without a goal for 28 games. Burakovsky scored on the power play after coming up empty for 10 games, and Oshie lifted his arms and looked to the sky when he scored on the power play to end his 13-game dry spell.

Devante Smith-Pelly scored Washington's fifth goal on 20 shots to chase Michal Neuvirth midway through the third period of a game the Capitals trailed 2-0 after one.

No. 2 pick Nolan Patrick, Travis Konecny and Jakub Voracek scored for Philadelphia. Alex Lyon made his NHL debut in relief of Neuvirth, stopping five shots in preparation for what could be his first start Thursday at New Jersey.

RED WINGS 2, SHARKS 1, SO

DETROIT (AP) - Justin Abdelkader scored in the seventh round of a shootout, and Petr Mrazek stopped Tomas Hertl at the other end to give Detroit the win.

Trevor Daley scored for the Red Wings in the third period before Kevin Labanc responded for San Jose. Gustav Nyquist, Andreas Athanasiou, Tomas Tatar and Abdelkader scored in the shootout for Detroit, while Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture and Chris Tierney scored for the Sharks.

The Red Wings had a season-high 44 shots, but San Jose salvaged a point thanks to goalie Martin Jones and Labanc's goal with 4:59 remaining. The Sharks spoiled Mrazek's bid for a third shutout in January after an extended period in Detroit's zone. Luke Glendening of the Red Wings was caught without a stick, and Labanc's wrist shot through traffic beat Mrazek high to the glove side.

Mrazek finished with 30 saves.

MAPLE LEAFS 5, ISLANDERS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Justin Holl and Travis Dermott each scored their first NHL goal, leading Toronto to the victory.

Holl made his NHL debut after being recalled from the minors earlier in the day.

Kasperi Kapanen, Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner also scored for the Maple Leafs (29-18-5), and Frederik Andersen made 28 saves for his fourth shutout of the season.

Thomas Greiss stopped 45 shots for the Islanders (25-22-5), who also lost 4-1 at home against Florida on Tuesday.

Toronto had three rookie defensemen in the lineup after scratching regulars Morgan Rielly (upper body), Roman Polak (viral infection) and Ron Hainsey (illness).

Thursday?s 6-pack

? Virginia 74, Louisville 64? Cavaliers are 21-1 and underrated because of their style.

? Purdue 75, Maryland 67? Boilers are first Big 14 team in seven years to start 11-0 in league.

? Wyoming 91, Colorado State 86 2OT? Cowboys won last three games, all in overtime!!!

? Texas Tech 73, Texas 71 OT? Keenan Evans scored 38, had game-winner at buzzer.

? Iowa State 93, West Virginia 77? Mountaineers lost five of their last six games.

? Butler 92, Marquette 72? Marquette?s players actually looked afraid of the Bulldogs. One of the worst Big East games I?ve ever seen.

Quote of the Day

?I?ll tell you, the biggest thing we learned was make sure you have two signal callers, not one signal caller, because they may have all your signals.?
The late Jim Johnson, Eagles? DC last time they were in the Super Bowl, talking about how the Patriots are adept at stealing teams? signals from the sidelines.

Thursday?s quiz

Where is Butler University located?

Wednesday?s quiz

Bud Grant is the only person to be head coach in a Super Bowl and also play in the NBA; he coached the Vikings and played for the Minneapolis Lakers.

Tuesday?s quiz

In the movie Draft Day, Kevin Costner plays the GM of the Cleveland Browns.

**********************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??.

13) For the first time this July, all 30 NBA teams will be represented at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. If you like the NBA, its worth your while to spend a week or so in the desert and watch the summer league in person. I highly recommend it.

12) Vikings losing in the NFC title game was actually a financial boon to hotels/businesses in the Twin Cities, since now more out-of-towners will be visiting Minnesota this week.

When Georgia Bulldogs made the national title game in Atlanta last month, it cost businesses some money to have Georgia in the game, meaning less out-of-state people would be taking up room in local hotels/restaurants.

11) FOX paid the NFL an average of $660M a year to televise 11 Thursday night games each season for the next five years.

10) Things I learned watching the news today; when an AMTRAK train is going full speed, it takes the train a mile to stop.

9) NFL game in Mexico City next season: Chiefs-Rams.

8) January 31 is solid day for baseball birthdays: Nolan Ryan, Ernie Banks, Jackie Robinson.

7) Three officials working in Sunday?s Super Bowl at one point spent time in the Arena League.

6) In the NHL, some teams have road trips where the players? moms or dads go on that trip with their sons. Pretty cool idea. LA Kings? eastern road trip now is a dad?s trip.

5) Field for the Paradise Jam tournament in the Virgin Islands next November:
Eastern Kentucky, Kansas State, Kennesaw State, Missouri, Northern Iowa, Old Dominion, Oregon State and Penn.

4) Catcher Alex Avila gets two years, $8.25M from the Diamondbacks.

3) Good day for Mookie Betts; he won his arbitration case with the Red Sox, will make $10.5M this season. Boston wanted to pay Betts $7.5M this season.

2) If you?re Kirk Cousins, which team is the your most attractive destination for 2018?
Jets? Broncos? Browns? Bills?

1? In this day and age, with so much technology, how do the Clippers not at least text Blake Griffin and tell him he?s been traded? Its big business and all? the owner of the Clippers used to be the CEO of freakin? Microsoft. How does Griffin find out about the trade via Twitter?

STREAKY TEAMS

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Calgary 0-6 past six games Columbus Under 9-2 past 11 games
Ottawa 0-6 past six games N.Y. Rangers Over 7-1 past eight games
Pittsburgh 8-2 past 10 games Tampa Bay Over 7-3 past 10 games

Power Outage

The Los Angeles Kings picked up a 3-0 shutout win at Dallas coming out of the break. It was a rare showing of offense, as they're still averaging just 2.0 goals per game over their past eight outings. As a result the 'under' has connected in five of their past seven outings. Things do not figure to get any easier with a trip to Nashville on Thursday against All-Star goaltender Pekka Rinne and the Predators. Nashville ranks third in the Western Conference in goal differential at plus-21, tied with the Kings in the category. The Preds are 16-5-3 at home this season, while the Kings are 15-9-2 in 26 road contests.

Plenty of Bark

The Arizona Coyotes have struggled this season with 118 goals, second-lowest mark in the NHL and worst in the Western Conference. Lately they have been very pesky and a tough out, going 3-2-1-3 across their past nine outings. Six of their past nine have either went to overtime or a shootout, with two OT wins, an OT loss and three losses in the shootout. With the exception of a 4-2 loss on Jan. 12 at home against the Oilers, all of their losses have been by one loss and they're just -153 across the nine-game span.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday, January 31

The Flyers roll into D.C. with former Capitals backstop Michal Neuvirth looking to drop his former employer. The Flyers have been hot lately, winning seven of their past eight against teams with a winning overall record, and eight of their past 10 games overall. The Capitals haven't been too shabby either, posting a 41-15 record over their past 56 outings at Verizon Center, while posting an impressive 49-24 record in their past 73 against the Eastern Conference. However, they could be rusty after the All-Star break, and they're not terribly impresive after rest. The Caps are just 5-12 in their past 17 when working on three or more days of rest. Philly is 2-5 in their past seven in D.C., while the under is 5-1-3 in the past nine meetings in this series, and 4-0-3 in the past seven meetings in D.C.

Thursday, February 1

The Panthers drop in on the Sabres in western New York, looking for their second win in as many meetings with Buffalo this season. The Panthers won 4-1 back in Buffalo back on Nov. 10 in a game which cashed the 'under'. The under has also hit in four stragiht for the Sabres, but that's mostly been the result of much better goaltending of late. Buffalo has yielded just 1.0 goals per game over the past four outings. These teams met four times last season, with the home team winning all four outings. The Panthers have won four of their past six trips to Buffalo.

The Oilers will host the Avalanche in the first meeting of the season between the Western Conference clubs. The Oilers have struggled this season, but they're starting to put it together lately. Edmonton has won four of their past five games, averaging 3.2 goals per game during the span. Goaltending has been their problem all season, allowing two or more goals in each of their past eight outings. Colorado won nine straight from Dec. 29 to Jan. 22, kicking off a win streak against Toronto at home, and winning at Toronto last Monday. However, they have dropped three in a row, including an overtime setback in Vancouver on Tuesday, 4-3. Edmonton swept the three-game season series in 2016-17, outscoring Colorado 17-8. The season before, it was Colorado sweeping the three-game series by an 11-5 margin.

Friday, February 2

The Golden Knights have been impressive this season. They already have the record for wins by a first-year NHL expansion team, and it's just February. That's how special their season has been. However, the Minnesota Wild aren't impressed. They won 4-2 in the first meeting in St. Paul back on Nov. 30 behind Devan Dubnyk in a game which hit the 'over'. The over has been a rare happening in St. Paul lately, as the 'under' has cashed in four of Minnesota's past five games at home. Vegas picked up a win on Tuesday in Calgary, 4-2, and the 'over' has hit in each of their past three outings on the road while going 4-1 in their past five overall.

Saturday, February 3

The Red Wings and Panthers will square off in Sunrise on Friday evening in the fourth and final regular season meeting. The first two games couldn't be decided in regulation, as Detroit won 3-2 in a shootout in the first meeting in South Florida back on Oct. 28, and the Panthers returned to the favor in their first-ever trip to Little Caesars Arena on Dec. 11, winning 2-1 in overtime. The Red Wings exacted revenge, 4-2, in the second home meeting against the Cats on Jan. 5.

The Flames head into Wednesday with five straight losses, although just one has come in regulation. That was 4-2 setback against the Golden Knights on Tuesday, a game which featured three late scores to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. These teams have met just once this season, and in typical Calgary fashion regulation could not decide the winner. Mark Giordano struck 52 seconds into overtime to send the home crowd home happy back on New Year's Eve, 4-3. The Blackhawks find themselves in uncharted territory, sitting in the basement of the Central Division. If you're a glass half-full kind of person, they are just 13 points out of first place and just five points back of the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference playoff race. In other words, things aren't as bad as they appear.

Hischier's late goal lifts Devils over Flyers 4-3
February 1, 2018

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) David Perron scored 3:57 into overtime to lead Vegas past the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 on Thursday night for the Golden Knights' 34th victory, the most by an NHL expansion team in its debut season.

The Jets had the puck rolling in the crease three times in the extra period, but it couldn't get it into the net. Perron then fired a high shot past Connor Hellebuyck to win it.

Winnipeg's Kyle Connor had tied it with a high shot to Marc-Andre Fleury's glove side with 2:36 left in the third period. Joel Armia also had a goal and one assist for Winnipeg.

Hellebuyck made 28 saves for the Jets (30-13-9), who were trying to set a franchise record with their eighth straight home win.

Fleury stopped 24 shots for Vegas (34-12-4). It was his 389th win, putting him into a tie for 13th among NHL goaltenders.

Reilly Smith had a short-handed goal and Erik Haula scored a controversial goal on the power play for Vegas.

DEVILS 4, FLYERS 3

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Nico Hischier scored on a deflection with 1:27 to play and the New Jersey Devils rallied to beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on Thursday night.

Damon Severson scored with 9:00 left to tie it, and Hischier's first goal in 11 games gave New Jersey its second straight win and spoiled goaltender Alex Lyon's first NHL start.

Kyle Palmieri and Drew Stafford also scored for the Devils, who have won only four times in 14 games (4-7-3) since Dec. 29. Keith Kinkaid made 22 saves.

Claude Giroux, Wayne Simmonds and Shayne Gostisbehere scored for the Flyers, who were looking for their third win over the Devils in less than a month. Lyon made 18 saves a night after making his NHL debut in relief of Michal Neuvirth, and Philadelphia lost its second in as many nights.

LIGHTNING 7, FLAMES 4

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Alex Killorn had two goals and two assists as Tampa Bay struck for five unanswered goals, including four in the third period, in a win over Calgary.

Down 4-3 after two periods, Tampa Bay tied it 12 seconds into the third when Killorn pounced on a loose puck near the Flames face-off dot, spun and sent a backhander on net that slipped past Mike Smith.

The rare off-night for Smith continued when Cory Conacher scored on a sharp angle at 5:16 to give the Lightning the lead for good at 5-4.

Just over a minute later, Steven Stamkos scored his 19th of the season and that was it for Smith. As he got the hook from coach Glen Gulutzan for David Rittich, Smith smashed his stick across the goalpost.

Conacher's second of the night at 8:26, on a shot from below the goal line, capped the third-period surge. Braydon Coburn and Matthew Peca also scored for Tampa Bay, which maintained its one-point lead over Vegas atop the overall standings.

SENATORS 2, DUCKS 1, OT

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Erik Karlsson scored 32 seconds into overtime to lift Ottawa over Anaheim and snap a six-game skid.

Karlsson one-timed a pass from Matt Duchene on a power play, beating Ryan Miller with a shot inside the near post.

Bobby Ryan scored early in the third period for Ottawa, and Mike Condon stopped 30 shots.

Ryan Kesler tied it with 54 seconds left in regulation after Anaheim pulled Miller for an extra attacker. Miller made 30 saves, but Anaheim ended a three-game winning streak.

PREDATORS 5, KINGS 0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Pekka Rinne made 19 saves, Filip Forsberg had a goal and an assist, and Nashville beat Los Angeles.

Craig Smith, Calle Jarnkrok, Colton Sissons and Viktor Arvidsson also scored. Ryan Johansen had three assists.

Making his first start since representing the Predators in last weekend's All-Star Game, Rinne earned his fifth shutout of the season and 48th of his career.

Jonathan Quick returned after missing the Kings' previous two games with an undisclosed injury. He made 31 saves.

BRUINS 3, BLUES 1

BOSTON (AP) - Tuukka Rask made 32 saves and extended his personal point streak to 19 games, lifting Boston over St. Louis.

Rask is 17-0-2 in his last 19 starts, and the Bruins improved to 15-1-4 in their last 20 games overall. David Krejci, Patrice Bergeron and David Backes scored for Boston.

In a game featuring two of the top three teams in goals against average, the goalies were the story as Jake Allen made 22 of his 43 saves in the second period - including a spectacular glove stop of Krejci. Rask matched Allen by robbing Jaden Schwartz 1:45 into the third period with a glove save of his own.

With the goalie pulled, Schwartz gave the Bruins a scare when he extended his scoring streak to five games and cut the lead to 2-1 with 1:32 remaining.

AVALANCHE 4, OILERS 3, OT

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - J.T Compher scored 2:28 into overtime to help Colorado snap a three-game losing skid with a victory over Edmonton.

Nikita Zadorov, Blake Comeau and Samuel Girard also scored for the Avalanche, who had a 10-game winning streak before going on their recent skid.

Connor McDavid had a pair of goals, and Drake Caggiula scored once for the Oilers, who have lost two of their last three.

Edmonton had tied it with just 27 seconds remaining in regulation and the goalie pulled as McDavid rifled in a puck after it caromed off the boards.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, RANGERS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Curtis McElhinney stopped 25 shots to give Toronto its second straight shutout, this time over New York.

James van Riemsdyk, Patrick Marleau, Zach Hyman and Justin Holl scored to help the Maple Leafs get their fourth straight win and a sweep of the teams' three-game season series. McElhinney was barely tested in his seventh career shutout and second of the season.

It came one night after Frederik Andersen had 25 saves in a 5-0 win at home against the Islanders, giving Toronto back-to-back shutouts for the second time this season.

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist was pulled early in the second period after giving up four goals on 13 shots. Ondrej Pavelec came on and stopped all 19 shots he faced.

STARS 4, COYOTES 1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Devin Shore had a goal and an assist during Dallas' three-goal second period, and the Stars beat Arizona.

Kari Lehtonen stopped 17 shots and improved to 6-2 in his last eight starts, all on the road.

Shore tied it at 1 in an atypical way when he lifted his stick to bat in the puck after Jason Spezza chipped it over the goal from behind the net. That was at the three-minute mark of the second.

Shore set up the second goal on a power play for Dallas at 5:21. He collected a rebound and centered to Tyler Seguin, whose shot got by Scott Wedgewood.

HURRICANES 2, CANADIENS 0

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Cam Ward stopped 27 shots in his second shutout of the season, and Carolina beat Montreal.

Brett Pesce and Brock McGinn scored to help the Hurricanes win their third straight, sweep the season series from Montreal and keep themselves in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race. Carolina entered two points out of a playoff spot.

Carey Price made 28 saves for the Canadiens, who have lost three in a row and fell to 2-5-2 in their last nine games.

PANTHERS 4, SABRES 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Harri Sateri stopped the final 19 shots he faced and 30 overall, and Keith Yandle had a goal and two assists in leading Florida over Buffalo.

Mike Matheson, Denis Malgin and Colton Sceviour also scored for the Panthers, who won consecutive games for the first time since winning five in a row from Dec. 19-30.

Ryan O'Reilly and Zemgus Girgensons scored for a Sabres team that continues to struggle at home. Chad Johnson stopped 28 shots.

CANUCKS 4, BLACKHAWKS 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Brendan Gaunce scored his second goal of the game late in the third period, and Vancouver overcame an early deficit to beat Chicago.

Daniel Sedin and Bo Horvat also scored for the Canucks. Troy Stecher added two assists, and Vancouver won for the fifth time in eight games after a 2-11-3 stretch.

Nick Schmaltz and Alex DeBrincat scored for Chicago, which ended a two-game winning streak. Duncan Keith had two assists.

Friday?s 6-pack

Six college basketball teams with the biggest budgets last season:

6) Arizona Wildcats $11.8M

5) Indiana Hoosiers $12.1M

4) Syracuse Orangemen $13.9M

3) Duke Blue Devils $17.9M

2) Louisville Cardinals $17.9M

1) Kentucky Wildcats $18.9M

Quote of the Day

?The desire to get back to the excitement of March is something that?s been driving us since the summer,. Can we get ourselves back in that position and take the next step? We were two minutes and a four-point lead away from getting to the second weekend. Simple things like not getting a free throw or a rebound probably cost us the Sweet 16. That?s why this team is laser-focused on every detail.?
Rhode Island basketball coach Danny Hurley

Friday?s quiz

Where did Baker Mayfield play college football before transferring to Oklahoma?

Thursday?s quiz

Butler University is located in Indianapolis

Wednesday?s quiz

Bud Grant is the only person to be head coach in a Super Bowl and also play in the NBA; he coached the Vikings and played for the Minneapolis Lakers.

*****************************

Friday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??

13) Georgia Tech 55, Syracuse 51? The current state of college hoop; total of only 13 players played in this game? four of the 13 kids played the whole 40:00.

Lot of teams have almost no depth, partially because of the transfer epidemic (most transfers have to sit out a year) and injuries.

Teams combined to shoot 10-36 on the arc in this game; had to be lot of tired legs out there.

12) Is Wyoming the most fun team in the country? Cowboys are 15-7, 6-0 in overtime games this season; they won their last three games in OT, with two of those going double OT.

Wyoming?s starting guards are a freshman/sophomore, but their two forwards are their two best players- Justin James, who has 91 points in his last three games, and Hayden Dalton, who played 46:00 twice in their last three games. Good passer, solid glue guy.

11) If you like to shoot the ball a lot when you play pickup ball, then Central Michigan?s Josh Kozinski is your new hero.

Against Northern Illinois Wednesday, Kozinski played 27:00, scored 24 points? he made 8-15 on the arc, but did almost nothing else. One rebound, one assist, one steal. A specialist.

For the season, Kozinski has taken 91 3-pointers, five 2-point shots, 17 foul shots.

10) Northern Arizona is a bad, obscure team; they?re 3-18, 1-9 in the Big Sky- they even lost to an NAIA school named Embry-Riddle, which I think used to be a pilot?s school. NAU is 10-36 in conference games the last three years.

But its not wise to bet against the Lumberjacks; they covered six of their last seven games, are 7-3 vs spread in Big Sky games, 4-1 on the road. Go figure.

9) Cal-Irvine 75, Long Beach State 68? 49ers led by 7 with 12:50 left in game Wednesday, but fell apart in last few minutes and are now 13-13, 6-3 in conference.

Long Beach has a starting forward, I won?t mention his name, but the kid went 0-7 on the foul line, 3-9 from the floor and turned ball over three times. He is shooting 65.9% from the line for the year, so going 0-7 on the line in a home game is odd.

8) Pitt Panthers are 0-10 in the ACC, but they?ve covered their last five games.

7) Villanova will probably be a #1 seed in the NCAA?s, but since 2010, Wildcats have made the Sweet 16 once, when they won the national title two years ago.

Villanova won five of last seven first round games, but is 1-4 in last five second round games.

6) Arizona will also be a highly-seeded team; they?ve won 19 of last 20 games, but the second weekend of the NCAA?s hasn?t been kind to the Wildcats.

Since 2002, Arizona is 5-4 in Sweet 16 games, 0-5 in Elite 8 games. If you pick the Wildcats to get to the Final Four, do so at your own risk.

5) Apparently when the Patriots won the Super Bowl LY, they had rings made up with 283 diamonds in each ring, which seems excessive, but the ?28-3? is reference to the score Atlanta led last year?s game, before things fell apart for them.

Falcons? owner Arthur Blank isn?t happy about the ?283 diamond? thing:

?I said to Robert (Kraft), ?You didn?t have to do the 28-3 in the ring. It kind of pissed me off.?

Alrighty then.

4) If you like math, that adds up to 14,999 diamonds just for the 53 rings that went to players. If Mr Blank owned a jewelry store instead of Home Depot, he might not be so mad.

3) New Orleans Pelicans got Nikola Mirotic and a 2nd-round pick from Chicago in exchange for a 1st-round pick, Omer Asik, Jameer Nelson and Tony Allen, who will be waived soon? his acquisition just balanced out cap numbers. Mirotic replaces the injured DeMarcus Cousins.

2) Thursday night?s college basketball upsets:
Cleveland State (+9.5) 77, Wright State 74
Citadel (+9) 80, Wofford 78
Temple 81 (+6), Wichita State 79 OT

1) One of the highlights for me every fall is when the Blue Ribbon Yearbook comes in the mail in October- it is an encyclopedia of college basketball.

This fall, their Newcomer of the Year: Michael Porter Jr of Missouri

Blue Ribbon?s Player of the Year: Bonzie Colson of Notre Dame

Missouri gave Porter?s father a coaching job when they signed the son and his brother, but Porter Jr played two minutes in the season opener before a back injury ended his season.

Colson got hurt and hasn?t played since December 30 and is likely done for the year. Notre Dame lost its last six games- they also have other injuries.

Even the college basketball encyclopedia couldn?t foresee some of this season?s events.

Malkin, Kessel lead Pens to win over Caps
February 2, 2018

PITTSBURGH (AP) Evgeni Malkin had two goals and two assists, Phil Kessel added two goals and an assist, and the surging Pittsburgh Penguins rolled past the Washington Capitals 7-4 on Friday night.

Bryan Rust, Carl Hagelin and Patric Hornqvist also scored for the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions, who won their fourth straight to pull within four points of first-place Washington in the crowded Metropolitan Division.

Sidney Crosby had two assists to push his scoring streak to 11 games, the longest active streak in the NHL. Matt Murray stopped 29 shots for Pittsburgh, which won its seventh consecutive home game by jumping on the Capitals early then pulling away late.

Alex Ovechkin scored twice to push his season total to an NHL-best 32 and Dmitry Orlov and Evgeny Kuznetzov also scored for the Capitals. Braden Holtby finished with 27 saves but gave up three goals in the opening 8 minutes of the third period before being pulled in favor of Phillpp Grubauer as Pittsburgh broke open a tight game.

WILD 5, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Eric Staal had two goals and an assist to lead Minnesota past Vegas.

Charlie Coyle, Tyler Ennis and Jared Spurgeon also scored, Jonas Brodin had three assists and Matt Dumba added two to help the Wild win their second straight after the All-Star break. Devan Dubnyk stopped 22 shots.

Eric Haula had a goal and an assist, Nate Schmidt also scored, and Colin Miller added two assists for Vegas, which remained a point behind Tampa Bay for the best record in the league. Malcolm Subban made 30 saves.

RED WINGS 4, HURRICANES 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Darren Helm had a goal and two assists, Petr Mrazek stopped 36 shots, and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 on Friday night.

Gustav Nyquist, Danny DeKeyser and Trevor Daley also scored for the Red Wings, who won their second straight after dropping six of eight.

Helm was at the center of it all, assisting on DeKeyser's tying goal and Daley's go-ahead score before finding the net himself on a breakaway late in the third period.

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Saturday??.

13) Oklahoma State 84, Kansas 79
Missouri 69, Kentucky 60
St John?s 81, Duke 77

This was the first time since March 6, 2005 that these three teams all lost on the same day.

12) Washington 78, Arizona 75? First-year coach Mike Hopkins has the Huskies 17-6 , 7-3 in the Pac-12; they?ve got wins over Kansas/Arizona, have shot at making the NCAAs. Would be ironic if Washington made the NCAAs and Syracuse didn?t, seeing how Hopkins waited a long time for Jim Boeheim to retire, so he could take over that program.

11) CAA race is interesting; Charleston leads at 9-3, game ahead of Northeastern/Wm & Mary. With one-third of the regular season left, nine of 10 teams already have four conference losses. Last place James Madison has three wins. 21 of 60 CAA games were decided by 4 or less points or in overtime.

10) Central Michigan 101, Ohio U 98 2OT? Bobcats went 16-31 on foul line, blew 13-point lead with 12:21 left to play. Chippewas were 31-36 on the charity stripe.

9) Colorado State asked basketball coach Larry Eustachy to step away from his job for a while, as they investigate the program? apparently he curses at players in practice and in 2014, was given a zero tolerance policy towards future verbal abuse of players.

Eustachy?s base salary is $985,012 and if he gets fired for cause, it saves the school $3M. When the team is 10-15, 3-9 in the Mountain West like Colorado State is this year, people put up with a lot less shenanigans than they did when the team was winning.

8) UCLA 82, USC 79? This was a really good game; 70 fast-paced possessions, Bruins had to make 12-26 on the arc to pull out the home win. Bennie Boatwright played only 9:00 for USC- -his foot still isn?t 100%.

7) Upsets of the Day:
Oklahoma State (+13) 84, Kansas 79
Brown (+11.5) 102, Princeton 100 OT
Citadel (+11.5) 100, Furman 92 OT
St John?s (+11) 81, Duke 77
SIU-Edwardsville 75, Jacksonville State 67
Drexel (+9) 91, William & Mary 79
East Carolina (+8) 88, Memphis 85 OT
Drake (+8) 78, Bradley 68

6) Ivy League teams play Friday/Saturday once conference play starts; Brown lost 95-90 in OT at Penn Friday night, then won 102-100 in OT at Princeton Saturday? had to be some tired kids on the bus back to Providence late Saturday night.

5) Gonzaga 68, BYU 60? Zags beat BYU at home for first time in four years. Gonzaga in 11-1 in WCC, but is 0-7 vs spread in last seven games, another example of how gambling is difficult.

4) Home favorites went 6-1 vs spread in SEC games Saturday; only team that didn?t cover was Auburn, which won by 12 laying 12.5. Tigers have a two-game lead over Tennessee in the SEC. Kentucky-Florida-Alabama are tied for third. Is Bruce Pearl national Coach of the Year?

3) Middle Tennessee State leads Conference USA at 10-1; they?ve won six of seven road games in conference, but none of the six wins were by more than seven points.

2) Cal-Davis 105, Long Beach State 104, 2OT? Aggies won despite suspending their best player, senior F Chima Moneke because to an unspecified violation of team rules at a hotel. No one was talking after the game, but the suspension is said to be indefinite.

Long Beach?s Gabe Levin was 24-28 on foul line in this game. Lot of foul shots for one guy.

1) Northern Colorado 86, Montana State 63? Bears? Andre Spight scored 41 points; he was 8-21 on arc, 7-10 inside arc, with five assists, seven turnovers. He had the ball a lot. This was his 4th Big Sky game with 30+ points this season.
