Avalanche roll to 9th straight win, 3-1 over Rangers
January 20, 2018

DENVER (AP) Nathan MacKinnon, Erik Johnson and Mikko Rantanen each had a goal and an assist, Jonathan Bernier made 27 saves and the streaking Colorado Avalanche beat the New York Rangers 3-1 on Saturday for their ninth consecutive win.

The Avalanche have won eight straight at home and haven't lost since Arizona beat them on Dec. 27. Colorado has outscored opponents 37-15 in the last nine games and has not trailed during the winning streak.

Colorado has won nine in a row for the first time since October 2000, the last season it won the Stanley Cup.

Pavel Buchnevich scored and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 34 shots for New York.

MacKinnon has goals in five straight games and has at least one point in each game of Colorado's streak. He is second in the NHL in scoring with 59 points (23 goals, 36 assists).

FLYERS 3, DEVILS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Travis Konecny had a goal and an assist, Michal Neuvirth made 28 saves and Philadelphia scored all its goals in the first period against New Jersey.

Ivan Provorov and Valtteri Filppula also scored for the Flyers, who won their sixth in the last seven to move closer to a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Jesper Bratt scored for the Devils, who called on goalie Ken Appleby for his NHL debut after Keith Kinkaid was injured in the first period.

Kinkaid made his third straight start in place of Cory Schneider (illness) but left after appearing to injure his right leg while giving up his third goal. Appleby, called up from Binghamton of the AHL on Friday, stopped all 24 shots he faced.

STARS 7, SABRES 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Mattias Janmark had two goals and an assist, and Esa Lindell added a goal and two assists as Dallas routed Buffalo.

Jamie Benn and Radek Faksa each had a goal and an assist, and Remi Elle also scored for the Stars, who return home after a 3-0-1 trip. Benn extended his point streak to seven games.

John Klingberg tallied three assists and Jason Spezza had two. Kari Lehtonen made 26 saves for Dallas.

The Sabres lost for the seventh time in eight games and were booed off the ice after the second and third periods in their most lopsided defeat of the season.

Sam Reinhart scored Buffalo's goal. Robin Lehner stopped 15 shots before being replaced by Chad Johnson (10 saves) after allowing a fourth goal midway through the second.

JETS 2, FLAMES 1, SO

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Bryan Little and Blake Wheeler scored in the shootout and Winnipeg ended Calgary's seven-game winning streak.

Little opened the shootout with a wrist shot inside the post and past Mike Smith. After Mark Jankowski and Sean Monahan were stopped by Connor Hellebuyck, and Smith stopped Patrik Laine, Wheeler clinched it on a deke to his forehand.

Mathieu Perreault scored in regulation for the Jets, who improved to 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. TJ Brodie scored for the Flames.

Hellebuyck had 30 saves for the Jets, and Smith stopped 33 shots in defeat.

HURRICANES 3, RED WINGS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Elias Lindholm's second goal of the game broke a third-period tie and Carolina went on to beat Detroit.

Lindholm made the most of an increased role, filling in for leading scorer Sebastian Aho in the team's first game without him this season. Aho is out with a concussion and lower-body injury.

Lindholm, who replaced Aho on the top line with Jordan Staal and Teuvo Teravainen, scored twice on power plays. Justin Williams gave the Hurricanes a two-goal cushion with 1:58 left. Cam Ward stopped 23 shots.

Tomas Tatar scored and Jimmy Howard made 27 saves for the Red Wings, who have lost four of five.

? Friday night, Lakers set an NBA record for foul line futility when they were 2-14 on the charity stripe in a 99-86 win over visiting Indiana.

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday??.

13) Oklahoma State 83, Oklahoma 81 OT? Trae Young scored 48 points, but it took some effort- he was 8-20 on the arc, 6-19 inside the arc, 12-12 on the line. He had 8 assists, 7 turnovers? no other Sooner scored in double figures.

In his last three games, Young is 20-48 on the arc, 17-39 inside the arc, 17-23 on the line, with 21 assists, 28 turnovers. He has the ball a lot.

Sooners were down 25-6 in this game, fought back to force OT, but Cowboys win to split the Bedlam series this season.

12) Fresno State-Air Force basketball game was postponed because of the government being shut down? all athletic activities at the Air Force Academy were postponed.

11) Auburn 79, Georgia 65? Dawgs led 40-26 at halftime, but Auburn started second half on a 31-4 run and won going away.

10) Kansas freshman Billy Preston isn?t at Kansas anymore; he signed up to play in the Bosnian pro basketball league, figuring he was never going to become eligible to play for the Jayhawks this season, after he was in a car accident and questions arose over who bought the car he was driving.

9) UNLV 79, Colorado State 74? Rebels scored the last 14 points of the game; if you took five points with the hometown Rams in this game, a push wasn?t what you had in mind. UNLV is 3-0 on road in Mountain West, but 0-3 at home. Go figure.

8) USC 74, Oregon State 67? Trojans sweep their Oregon trip for first time since 2008.

7) Thunder 148, Cavaliers 124? Cleveland is 3-18-1 vs spread at home; they?ve lost nine of their last 12 games overall.

6) I?m totally convinced that in college basketball, one of the most important skills for a player to have is getting loose balls. Not rebounds over the rim, but long rebounds off missed 3-pointers, and deflected passes. There are so many of those in college ball now- the ability to anticipate where those loose balls are going to go often decides who wins games.

5) Kansas 70, Baylor 67? Jayhawks outscored Baylor 9-0 over last 2:51 to pull this game out; they are 6-1 in Big X, with no wins by more than six points.

4) Florida 66, Kentucky 64? Wildcats lost three of their last five games, are just 4-3 in SEC.

3) St Mary?s 72, Pacific 69? Gaels had bit of a hangover after winning at Gonzaga, but they got by the surging Tigers, who had their 5-game winning streak snapped.

2) Upsets of the Day:
NC-Wilmington 73 (+8), Towson State 71 OT
Iowa State (+7) 70, Texas Tech 52
Coastal Carolina (+7) 74, Troy State 73
New Mexico (+6.5) 79, San Diego State 75
Portland (+6.5) 72, LMU 65
Ohio U (+6) 72, Eastern Michigan 66
Washington (+6) 72, Colorado 62

1) Oregon 94, UCLA 91? Bill Walton insinuated that the Bruins have internal problems; don?t forget they suspended those two players from the shoplifting debacle in China, and one of those kids was supposed to be a starter.

UCLA was down big in this game, but stormed back and damn near won the game, but instead they?ve lost three games in a row? Bruins are only 4-4 in the Pac-12.

Konecny's OT goal lifts Flyers past Caps
January 21, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) The Philadelphia Flyers are already in playoff mode. That was enough to beat the spotty Washington Capitals.

Travis Konecny scored 27 seconds into overtime, and the surging Flyers beat the Capitals 2-1 on Sunday.

Michael Raffl also scored for Philadelphia, and Brian Elliott had 27 saves. The Flyers, who lost 10 consecutive games earlier in the season, have won three in a row and seven of eight to move into playoff position in the Eastern Conference.

''Coming in here and getting a win, it definitely says something about our character,'' Konecny said. ''There's just that vibe in the locker room right now. We really want that playoff opportunity and we're pushing for it.''

Konecny found space in the middle of the offensive zone and his shot deflected off Washington's T.J. Oshie and past Braden Holtby for his eighth of the season.

Konecny also scored in Saturday's 3-1 win against New Jersey. Washington began the day with 18 home wins, tied with the Vegas Golden Knights for the most in the NHL.

''We're just finding ways to win hockey games,'' Konecny said. ''It's a hard road game coming in here and you know they rested yesterday. I don't know, we're just keeping things simple and we're just trusting our abilities.''

Washington has dropped three in a row.

''You're playing a Philly team that's playing extremely well right now. They're in playoff mode,'' Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. ''There's not a lot separating first (place) and eighth. Every game is going to be huge. It's going to get ramped up here.''

Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-best 29th goal, but the Capitals came up empty on several viable scoring chances against Elliott.

''The chances were there. We created lots of chances, lots of opportunities,'' Ovechkin said. ''We can give the goalie too (many) easy saves. We have to manage the puck better when we have opportunities.''

Elliott and Philadelphia's defense certainly played a part in keeping Washington's offense in check.

''Guys were boxing out in front and forcing those shots from the outside. It kind of gets you in a groove and I thought we did that well all night,'' Elliott said.

Both teams scored in the second period.

Working from behind Washington's net, Valtteri Filppula sent a deft pass to Raffl, whose shot from the left slot bounced off Holtby and into the net at 13:48.

Raffl's ninth goal in his last 26 games topped his total from last season. The left wing did not score in his first 21 games.

The Capitals, who sit third in the East, tied it on Ovechkin's power-play goal with 15.8 seconds left. With captain Claude Giroux in the box for slashing, John Carlson's pass set up Ovechkin's blistering one-timer from just above the left circle.

Despite the loss, Washington sounded upbeat after some recent down performances. The Capitals stymied the Flyers on three power-play chances and did not allow many shots on goal. Holtby made 21 stops.

''I'm not too disappointed. I'm disappointed in the final outcome, but I'm not disappointed in the game,'' Trotz said. ''There's a lot to like in our game.''

NOTES: Philadelphia won the first meeting 8-2 on Oct. 14. ... Ovechkin remains one assist shy of 500 for his career. ... Elliott returned to the lineup after G Michal Neuvirth started the previous two games. ... Capitals F Alex Chiasson, who has played in 44 games this season, was a healthy scratch. . Philadelphia is 0 for 12 on the power play over the last four games.

Knights rout Canes, have best NHL record
January 21, 2018

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) The Golden Knights are giving Vegas an incredible, odds-beating story in their first year on the ice.

With a roster built on everybody else's spare parts, this expansion team has the whole league playing catch-up.

James Neal and Jonathan Marchessault scored to help the Golden Knights beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 on Sunday night, giving the first-year franchise the best record in the NHL.

The Golden Knights are 31-11-4, good for 66 points. That's one ahead of Tampa Bay, which had the night off. Vegas is two wins shy of tying the record for wins by an expansion team, shared by the Anaheim Ducks and Florida Panthers in 1993-94.

Just don't expect the veteran-heavy Golden Knights to get caught up in their unexpected standing.

''It's an interesting story, and it's still being written,'' forward Colin Miller said.

Miller had a goal and two assists, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves for Vegas. The Golden Knights finished 2-1-1 on this road trip, including a 4-1 win Thursday at the Lightning.

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Brendan Leipsic also scored for Vegas, which avenged a 3-2 shootout loss to Carolina in December. Neal got his 21st goal of the season, and Marchessault had his 17th.

This trip to Raleigh went much better for Vegas coach Gerard Gallant than his last. In his previous visit in November 2016, he was fired at the arena by the Florida Panthers. While the team bus took away his players, Gallant was left to wait for a taxi.

''I'm happy to be where I'm at, with the team I'm with,'' Gallant said.

Tough to be upset from atop the NHL world. Not that Gallant is getting caught up in that just yet.

''Every guy in our room knows there's a long part of the season left,'' coach Gerard Gallant said. ''We can't worry about looking at the standings.''

Jaccob Slavin scored for the Hurricanes late in the first period on a power play. Goalie Scott Darling was lifted after allowing three goals on eight shots in the first.

Bellemare scored less than three minutes in, setting the tone. He took a nifty back pass from William Carrier, who drew two skaters and the attention of Darling. Bellemare put the puck through Darling's legs for his fifth goal.

Miller and Marchessault scored 39 seconds apart in the first, leading Carolina coach Bill Peters to call his team's timeout. He then signaled for Cam Ward to replace Darling.

Neal scored on a second-period power play, giving him at least 21 goals in 10 consecutive seasons. He gathered the rebound of Brad Hunt's shot and poked the puck past Ward.

Carolina, which has lost five of seven, is last in the tight Metropolitan Division.

NOTES: Carolina played its second consecutive game without F Sebastian Aho, the team's leader in goals and points. Aho has not played since suffering a concussion and an unspecified lower-body injury Jan. 14 against Calgary. ... The Golden Knights are 20-1 when scoring first, and Carolina is 3-13-5 when trailing 1-0. ... Miller's goal broke an 0-for-19 skid on the power play for Vegas, which last had an extra-man goal Jan. 2 against Nashville. ... Carolina's Justin Faulk took two penalties in a span of nine minutes in the first and second periods. ... Darling entered the game having been successful against Pacific Division teams, going 10-4-7 with a 1.89 goals against average.

Hellebuyck stops 29 shots, Jets beat Canucks 1-0
January 21, 2018

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Connor Hellebuyck made 29 saves for his fourth shutout of the season and the Winnipeg Jets extended their home winning streak to six games with a 1-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night.

Patrik Laine scored his team-leading 21st goal in the first period.

Hellebuyck picked up his 25th win for the Jets, who moved into first place in the Central Division, one point ahead of idle Nashville.

Anders Nilsson stopped 35 shots for the Canucks, who had lost 5-2 to Edmonton the night before. It was Nilsson's sixth straight loss.

Jets captain Blake Wheeler sent a backhand pass from behind the net to Laine in front, and he gave his team the lead at 11:45 of the first period.

The Jets had their second power play of the game midway through the third. Dustin Byfuglien rang a shot off the post and Kyle Connor had a quick shot stopped by Nilsson.

Hellebuyck got a cut around his right eye after being hit by an errant stick when teammate Josh Morrissey and Canucks forward Thomas Vanek got tangled up in the crease with under four minutes left in the game. A trainer came out to tend to the wound, and then play continued.

NOTES: Canucks center Bo Horvat was back on the ice after missing 18 games with a broken bone in his foot suffered on Dec. 5.

Boedker, Thornton lead Sharks in 6-2 rout of Ducks
January 21, 2018

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Mikkel Boedker had two goals and an assist, Joe Thornton had a goal and an assist, and the San Jose Sharks beat the Anaheim Ducks 6-2 on Sunday night.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Kevin Labanc and Melker Karlsson also scored for the Sharks, who have won five of six. Aaron Dell stopped 33 shots.

Rickard Rakell and Ryan Getzlaf scored for Anaheim. John Gibson stopped only 17 of 22 shots and was replaced after giving up his fifth goal. Anaheim had a four-game home winning streak snapped.

Four goals came in the third period. First, Anaheim pulled within one when Ondrej Kase stole the puck from behind the net and quickly fed Getzlaf, who fired it past Dell.

One minute later, the Sharks answered when Thornton's slap shot went in.

Boedker's second goal gave San Joe a 5-2 lead, and Karlsson's goal on goalie Ryan Miller made it a runaway.

The Ducks first found the net in the final minute of the second period, but that took a two-man advantage and a bit of luck.

Rakell was camped a few feet below the crease when he snapped a shot. San Jose's Justin Braun stuck out a stick, but it deflected the puck off the back of Dell's arm and into the net.

It was Rakell's team-high 17th goal this season.

San Jose appeared to take a commanding 3-0 lead on a power play in the second period. Boedker fired a shot from the top of the right circle that whistled past Gibson.

The Sharks took a 2-0 lead early in the second period when Anaheim's No.1 line turned the puck over. Thornton snapped it out to Labanc, who popped free for a breakaway. He beat Gibson on his short side for his fifth goal.

The Sharks took a 1-0 lead late in the first period on a nifty give-and-go when Tomas Hertl skated down the far side and sent a pass through the legs of Anaheim's Brandon Montour and right to Vlasic in front of the net.

Vlasic snapped it past Gibson for his seventh goal of the season.

**************************************

Monday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend??.

13) Patriots 24, Jaguars 20? Tom Brady went to the same high school as Barry Bonds, Lynn Swann? Serra HS in San Mateo, CA; their booster club must have a boatload of money.

Despite all that, my favorite Serra HS alum is former big league infielder Tim Cullen, who won a World Series ring as a reserve infielder with the ?72 Oakland A?s.

Looking up Cullen?s career, which lasted seven years, in February, 1968 he was traded from the Senators to the White Sox, then in August that same year, he was traded back to Washington. In both trades, infielder Ron Hansen went the other way. No idea why.

12) Patriots? WR Danny Amendola played the first four years of his career with the St Louis Rams; he missed 22 of 64 games in those years, when the Rams went a combined 17-46-1. Amendola was productive when he played, but he missed way too many games.

In five years since moving on to New England, Amendola has played in 69 of 80 games, for a team that went 63-17? are the Patriots? trainers that much better than the Rams? trainers?

11) Maybe this happens a lot and I?ve just never seen it, but when the Patriots? game ended and Brady was shaking hands with a guy on Jacksonville, referee Clete Blakeman patted Brady on the back, got his attention, then said something quick to him before he left.

Since when do the referees congratulate players after they win?

10) In 266 NFL games this season, only 12 times has a team been called for zero or one penalty in a game? New England became the 12th team Sunday.

Last time an NFL team had only one penalty in a playoff game? The Patriots, back in 2011.

9) Two years ago, for whatever reason, ESPN went out of its way to promote LSU?s freshman star Ben Simmons, to the point where you almost rooted against Simmons, especially when LSU didn?t make the NCAA tournament. It became sickening that ESPN would promote a kid who had no resume? it was all hype.

This year, they?re doing the same thing with Oklahoma?s Trae Young, to the point where the kid has 28 turnovers in his last three games but you feel like ESPN thinks he is the best college ballplayer since Michael Jordan, or at least Simmons. Enough already; let the season play itself out. At least Oklahoma will be in the NCAA?s.

8) How many movies has Dwayne Johnson made? Seems like The Rock is working his butt off, making a ton of cash. According to IMDB.com, Mr Johnson has made 70 movies/TV shows, not counting all his WWE stuff and he is only 46 years old.

He has 10 projects that have either been completed or announced but not released yet. Have to give him credit, he is making a lot of money while the proverbial iron is hot.

7) When Nick Foles went to the Pro Bowl after the 2013 season, his OC with the Eagles was Pat Shurmur, who is Minnesota?s OC now and is expected to be named head coach of the Giants Tuesday. Foles could win the Super Bowl, then go back to being the Eagles? backup next year.

6) What the hell do the Vikings do now? Bad enough they have to go home and have the Super Bowl played in their own ballpark, but their offseason will really be interesting.

Which of the three QB?s stays in Minnesota? Keenum? Bridgewater? Bradford? Do two of them stay and if so, which one takes a hike? Lot of hard questions need to be answered.

5) Clemson Tigers are 16-3 and appear headed to the NCAAs, but they lost 2nd-leading scorer Donte Grantham with a torn ACL Saturday? he is out for the year.

4) Man if you don?t like football, Sunday was a rough day for sports on TV; a few, but not many college hoop games- no real good ones, some golf, the Australian Open, but just a lackluster TV day, except for the conference championship games.

3) Eagles 38, Vikings 7?During the regular season, Vikings were only team not to allow a defensive TD against them- whoops. Patrick Robinson?s first quarter pick-6 changed all that, and turned the tide in a game that Minnesota led early, 7-0.

2) NFL trivia? Case Keenum could?ve become the second undrafted QB to start a Super Bowl, but the draft today is only seven rounds? John Unitas was a 9th round pick of the Steelers in 1955, though there were also a lot fewer teams then. Unitas was the 102nd player taken in the ?55 draft, which would put him in the 4th round these days.

Kurt Warner remains the only undrafted QB to start a Super Bowl.

1) Early line on the Super Bowl: Patriots, -5.5 or 6, bet down already from -7. Some experts are predicting it?ll get back to 7 or 7.5 in the next two weeks.

It is unusual that the Eagles just KO?d the Vikings and now head to Minnesota for the Super Bowl, where it is doubtful they?ll get a warm reception.

2018 handicapping note: Vikings return to Philadelphia in the 2018 regular season.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Avalanche burying their competition
Monty Andrews

Colorado has been downright dominant during their nine-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 37-14 while winning seven of those games by multiple goals.

Rocky Mountain High

The Colorado Avalanche are the hottest thing going right now, winners of nine consecutive games heading into Monday's road encounter with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Colorado has been downright dominant during the streak, outscoring opponents 37-14 while winning seven of those games by multiple goals. The Maple Leafs halted an extended skid with a 4-3 triumph over Ottawa, just their sixth win in the past 16 games. The Avalanche have the upper hand by virtue of a 4-3 overtime win in their first meeting Dec. 29 in Denver, and have won five of their previous seven head-to-head encounters at Air Canada Centre.

Eichel vs. McDavid, Chapter 2

Two of the league's best young superstars will face off for the second and final time this season as Jack Eichel leads the Buffalo Sabres into Edmonton for a date with Connor McDavid and the surging Oilers on Tuesday night. Eichel was the victor in the first meeting between former top-two picks earlier this season, scoring a goal in a 3-1 Buffalo victory. but oddsmakers are sure to make Edmonton the favorite in this one; the Oilers come in having won three consecutive games for just the second time all season, while the Sabres have been one of the worst road teams in the league at 5-14-6.

Back in Sin City

Few people who have been to Las Vegas like being away from Sin City for long - and that certainly goes for the expansion Golden Knights, who return to T-Mobile Arena for a Tuesday night encounter with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Vegas returns to familiar confines following a 2-1-1 showing on a four-game trip through the southeastern United States, and is no doubt happy to build on its league-best 18-2-2 home mark. But not all is perfect on the Las Vegas Strip, as the Golden Knights have gone just 3-for-36 on the power play over their past 13 games despite scoring twice with the man advantage in Sunday's 5-1 win over Carolina.

Injury Updates

* The Oilers' inconsistent offense has been dealt a major blow with word that center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will miss the next 5-to-6 six weeks with cracked ribs. Nugent-Hopkins has a team-best 16 goals for Edmonton, which ranks 22nd at 2.8 goals per game.

* The New York Rangers' injury parade has a new participant. Veteran defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk will be out indefinitely after undergoing surgery with a torn meniscus; he joins Chris Kreider, Ryan McDonagh and Kevin Hayes on the sidelines.

* Toronto Maple Leafs blue-liner Morgan Rielly is considered questionable for Monday's pivotal encounter with the red-hot Avs. Reilly sat out the Leafs' win over the Senators on Saturday night with an upper-body injury suffered Thursday in Philaelphia.

Player News

* James Neal is in rarefied air after reaching the 20-goal plateau for the 10th straight season; the Golden Knights forward is just the sixth active player to reach the milestone. Vegas is a blistering 14-2-2 SU this season in games in which Neal scores.

* Washington superstar Alex Ovechkin continues to lead NHL goal-scorers with 29, two more than Nikita Kucherov and Anders Lee. The Capitals had reeled off wins in 12 straight games in which Ovechkin had scored prior to Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Flyers.

* A report out of Buffalo suggests the Sabres haven't initiated talks on a new contract with forward Evander Kane, who is in the last year of his current deal. The Sabres will likely trade Kane, who ranks second on the team in goals (16) and points (36).

Stanley Cup Futures

* The Boston Bruins have won plenty of support in the eyes of oddsmakers, thanks to a point streak that has reached 16 games as of Sunday. The Bruins, 12-0-4 over that stretch, are now at +900 to win the Stanley Cup championship, according to Bet365.

* Colorado continues to surge up the futures list as it rides the longest streak of the NHL season into Monday's encounter with Toronto. The Avalanche have gone from +2,800 on Wednesday all the way up to +2,000 as of Sunday afternoon.

Over/Under Trends

* Vegas was once one of the hottest over plays at T-Mobile Arena - but regression to the mean is in full effect. The Golden Knights have gone below the total in four of their previous five home games, and have slipped to 11-10-1 O/U for the season.

* The Washington Capitals have been one of the most exciting road teams in the league so far. The Ovechkin-led Caps have exceeded the total in 15 of their 22 games away from Washington, including each of their previous three contests.

Comeau leads Avalanche past Leafs for 10th straight win
January 23, 2018

TORONTO (AP) Blake Comeau scored the go-ahead goal with 7:43 left and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Monday night for their 10th straight win.

Comeau beat a backchecking Auston Matthews to the net and redirected Carl Soderberg's feed past goalie Frederik Andersen to put Colorado ahead 3-2. Gabriel Landeskog added an empty-netter in the final minute to seal it.

Gabriel Bourque and Nail Yakupov also scored for the surprising Avalanche, who have surged into a crowded race for the two Western Conference wild cards. Jonathan Bernier made 29 saves for his ninth straight win in place of injured Semyon Varlamov.

Matthews and Patrick Marleau scored for the Maple Leafs. Andersen stopped 23 shots in defeat.

LIGHTNING 2, BLACKHAWKS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Andrei Vasilevskiy made 40 saves in his NHL-best seventh shutout, Chris Kunitz scored a short-handed goal in the second period and Tampa Bay ended a season-high three-game skid.

Yanni Gourde also scored to help the Lightning leapfrog idle Vegas for the best record in the NHL. Tampa Bay, which lost to Chicago in the 2015 Stanley Cup Final, improved to 11-0-2 against the Blackhawks in their last 13 regular-season meetings.

With Tampa Bay defenseman Mikhail Sergachev serving a double minor for high sticking and unsportsmanlike conduct, Jake Dotchin shot the puck wide of the net and Kunitz found it before anyone else, taking it off the backboard and banking it in off the right skate of goaltender Jeff Glass.

Kunitz's sixth goal of the season was enough for Vasilevskiy, who got his 28th win of the season.

Glass made 29 saves, but last-place Chicago lost for the fourth time in five games.

COYOTES 3, ISLANDERS 2, OT

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Nick Cousins scored his second goal of the game 2:21 into overtime to lift Arizona.

Cousins added an assist and the Coyotes ran their points streak to five games, a season high. Arizona has points from seven of eight games, with six of those going to overtime. Brendan Perlini scored for the third time in three games and Antti Raanta stopped 32 shots.

Anthony Beauvillier scored two goals for his second straight two-goal game for the Islanders, who have lost three of four and eight of 12. Beauvillier has eight goals in the last seven games. Jaroslav Halak finished with 30 saves.

Cousins was in front of the net for teammate Christian Fischer's pinpoint pass and put away the winner with a backhand for his seventh of the season.

SABRES 2, FLAMES 1, OT

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Jack Eichel scored 1:30 into overtime to give Buffalo its first win at Calgary in more than 14 years.

Eichel one-timed a pass from Rasmus Ristolainen for his 19th of the season, putting it past Mike Smith to extend his point streak to six games (four goals, six assists).

Scott Wilson also scored and Chad Johnson stopped 32 shots to help Buffalo snap a four-game road losing streak and get its first victory on the Flames' home ice since Oct. 18, 2003.

Matthew Tkachuk scored for the Flames, who are 7-0-2 in their last nine. Mike Smith finished with 31 saves.

RED WINGS 3, DEVILS 0

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Petr Mrazek had 37 saves in posting his second straight shutout and third of the season as Detroit beat slumping New Jersey.

Tyler Bertuzzi, David Booth and Dylan Larkin scored for the Red Wings, who snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the second time in six games.

Cory Schneider, sidelined two of the last three games with an illness, made 27 saves for the Devils, who have two wins in their last 10 games (2-5-3).

Mrazek is clearly giving coach Jeff Blashill something to think about. He made 27 saves in shutting out Chicago on Jan. 14, and he now has three shutouts in 14 games with a 5-5-1 record.

WILD 3, SENATORS 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Jason Zucker scored for the fourth straight game and Alex Stalock made 37 saves to lead Minnesota.

Zach Parise and Mikael Granlund also scored to help the Wild improve to 4-0-2 in their last six games.

Matt Duchene scored his seventh goal for Ottawa. Mike Condon made his first start since Dec. 30 and made 33 saves as the Senators lost for the fourth time in five games.

Zucker tied Eric Staal for the team lead with 19 goals this season five minutes into the third for the game-winner in front of a sparse crowd due to a blizzard in the Twin Cities.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

? Kentucky?s basketball team is out of the Top 25 for the first time in four years.

? Nick Foles in the second half Sunday: 11-of-11, 159 yards, 2 TD. Not bad for a backup.

? Eldrick Woods is playing golf this week in the PGA tournament at Torrey Pinex; over/under on worst round he shoots this week: 74.5

? TCU 82, West Virginia 73? Big X schedule is tough travel for the Mountaineers.

? Virginia Tech 80, North Carolina 69? Lethargic effort by the Tar Heels.

? SF Giants signed OF Austin Jackson for two years, $6M.

Quote of the Day

?I don?t sell, when you come here: ?The university and the state will take care of you for the rest of your life.? You may buy that, and I?ve got some great property and some swampland down in Florida to sell you too. Every one of us in this country is based on, you have to take care of your self, prepare yourself, and then when you make it you make sure you?re helping and along the way you?re bringing other people with you.

That?s what we?re trying to do: just give these guys the best opportunity. We?re not trying to say that this university or state will take care of you for the rest of your life. There?s no socialism here. This stuff is you have to go do it and we?re going to help you do it. Some like that, some don?t like that.?

Tuesday?s quiz

Before DeMarcus Cousins did it Monday night, who was last NBA player with 30 points, 20 rebounds, 10 assists in a game?
(Hint: It happened in 2010)

Monday?s quiz

Emmitt Smith and Thurman Thomas share the record for most postseason touchdowns in the NFL, with 21.

Sunday?s quiz

Jack Ramsay was the Portland Trailblazers? coach when they won their only NBA title.

**************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) Whats with NBA teams and drama? Milwaukee Bucks fired coach Jason Kidd, who was 139-152 in 3.5 years, but 22-21 this year. News of Kidd?s firing got out before the team told Kidd, and star Giannis Antetokounmpo isn?t happy about it, which is never good for an NBA team, when your star player is ticked off.

Antetokounmpo called the coach and asked him if he wanted him to help save his job, which apparently was before Kidd knew he was losing his job. Oy.

If the season ended as I type this, the Bucks would be the #8 seed in the East.

12) Washington Wizards players recently had a players-only meeting; here are two quotes about that event:

First, John Wall:
?We had our team meeting. A couple guys took it the negative way and it hurt our team. Instead of taking it in a positive way like we did in the past and using it to build our team up, it kind of set us back a little bit.?

Second, Bradley Beal:
?It was tough. I try to keep all our stuff as personal as possible but I think in a way not everybody got a chance to speak whenever they wanted to. They didn?t want to bring up an issue or something they had a problem with on the team. Regardless of what may be going on, as men we?ve got to be able to accept what the next man says, be respectful about it and move on from it. I think it was one of those situations where we didn?t necessarily get everything that we wanted to get accomplished.?

Coaching an NBA team is serious money, but it can?t be great fun.

11) In the last 16 Super Bowls, underdogs are 11-5 against the spread.

10) This will be 4th Super Bowl in last five years with two #1 seeds. From 1994-2012, #1 seeds met in only one of 19 Super Bowls.

9) In their last five games, New England has been called for nine penalties for 110 yards; their opponents have been called for 29 penalties for 390 yards.

8) Tom Brady has more wins (27) and passing TDs (68) in postseason than Nick Foles has wins (24) and passing TDs (66) in his entire NFL career.

7) Minnesota Vikings last made the Super Bowl after the 1976 season, when I was a senior in high school; since then, they?re 0-6 in NFC championship games.

6) Last years, $138.5M was wagered on the Super Bowl, just in Nevada- thats a record, one that is expected to be broken this year.

5) Knicks/Rangers both played in Staples Center Sunday; it is first time Knicks/Rangers played road games in the same arena on the same day since 1957.

4) Miami Heat?s James Johnson scored five points in 0:04 Sunday night, as Heat erased a 105-100 deficit in the last minute at Charlotte, eventually winning 106-105. Not easy to score five points in 0:04, but layup-steal-3-pointer did the trick.

3) Carolina Panthers hired Carolina DC Steve Wilks as their new head coach; he was only a coordinator for one year, but has been a coach in college/NFL since 1995.

Cleveland Browns hired Todd Haley as their new offensive coordinator; hopefully he got promised that the Browns will draft a quarterback in April.

2) From Christopher Kamka, NBC Sports, Chicago: In 2017, Chris Gimenez was the first major leaguer to catch 5+ games and also pitch in 5+ games in the same season since the Phillies? Bill Harman in 1941. Gimenez pitched in five games, caught in 59 games last year.

1? New Jersey Giants hired Pat Shurmur as head coach; he?ll keep DC Steve Spagnuolo, since he was Spagnuolo?s OC in St Louis is 2009-10. Rams improved from 1-15 in ?09 to 7-9 in ?10, then Shurmur became the head coach of the Browns in ?11, which obviously didn?t go well (9-23).
