Steen ties it, Dunn scores in OT to lift Blues over Leafs
January 16, 2018

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Juuse Saros made 43 saves, Kevin Fiala scored eight minutes into the third period and the Nashville Predators beat the Vegas Golden Knights 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Nashville played its first game in a week and has won three straight. The shutout was the third of the season for Saros and the fourth of his career.

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 26 shots for the Golden Knights, who have lost two in a row.

Saros was superb, especially against Vegas forward Jonathan Marchessault, who peppered 10 shots on the Finnish netminder but was unable to get one by him.

Blues 2, Maple Leafs 1, OT

TORONTO (AP) - Alexander Steen tied it with 57 seconds left and Vince Dunn scored 1:43 into overtime, lifting St. Louis over Toronto.

Connor Brown put Toronto ahead on a short-handed breakaway midway through the third period, but Steen scored with goalie Carter Hutton pulled for an extra attacker by backhanding Alex Pieterangelo's rebound past Frederik Andersen.

Dunn snapped a low shot past Andersen after choosing to keep the puck on a 2-on-1.

Andersen stopped 40 shots and Hutton had 30 saves.

SHARKS 3, COYOTES 2, SO

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Joe Pavelski scored the only goal of the shootout to lift San Jose over Arizona.

Pavelski scored on San Jose's first attempt, and Sharks goalie Aaron Dell was perfect through three rounds in his first NHL shootout. Dell also had 30 saves.

Joe Thornton and Mikkel Boedker had regulation goals for San Jose.

Antti Raanta had 20 saves for Arizona. Brad Richardson had a goal and assist, but the Coyotes lost their fourth straight game and have dropped 17 of 21.

STARS 4, RED WINGS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Jason Spezza responded to being benched by scoring two tiebreaking goals on power plays, helping Dallas beat Detroit.

Spezza scored on a lunging one-timer below the left circle with 5:52 left in the second period. His first goal came on a redirected shot midway through the first.

The 33-year-old forward was a healthy scratch Monday when Dallas won at Boston in overtime. He bounced back by ending his 14-game goal drought, scoring twice in a game for the first time since March 12, 2016. Spezza scored 33 goals just two years ago and has 323 career goals.

Dallas' Radek Faksa and Martin Hanzal also scored. Ben Bishop stopped 13 shots for the Stars, who have won six of eight.

DEVILS 4, ISLANDERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Damon Severson scored twice 1:26 apart in New Jersey's three-goal second period, and the Devils ended a six-game skid.

Kyle Palmieri and Taylor Hall also scored for New Jersey, which was 0-3-3 since beating Detroit at home on Dec. 27. Keith Kinkaid, getting the start after Cory Schneider was a late scratch due to illness, stopped 25 shots.

Anders Lee scored and Jaroslav Halak made 38 saves as the Islanders snapped a three-game winning streak that started with a 5-4 shootout victory over the Devils here on Jan. 7.

New Jersey trailed less than two minutes in but got four straight goals starting with Palmieri's score late in the first period.

RANGERS 5, FLYERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Rick Nash scored twice while New York notched five straight goals, and the Rangers rolled over Philadelphia.

Jordan Weal put Philadelphia up 1-0 before Nash, J.T. Miller, Paul Carey and Michael Grabner combined to make it 5-1 by the end of the second period. Nash had the first and last goal for the Rangers.

New York snapped a three-game skid and improve to 23-17-5. Henrik Lundqvist made 25 saves.

Philadelphia dropped to 20-16-8 with its first loss in four games. Brian Elliott gave up five goals on 21 shots before being replaced by Michal Neuvirth in the third period. Neuvirth stopped eight shots.

Wednesday?s 6-pack

Longshots? odds to win the 2018 World Series

125-1? White Sox, Reds, Tigers, A?s

100-1? Braves, Padres

80-1? Marlins, Phillies

66-1? Pirates

50-1? Orioles, Royals

40-1? Rays

Quote of the Day

?I?d love to [sneak the ball],, I actually literally tuned in to you guys for two minutes and heard you guys and the fans bashing us for not quarterback sneaking and not believing me when I say that we don?t run it and I want to do it. Since it?s my show now, I can speak freely and tell you guys, my co-hosts, that I truly have never said ?I don?t want to run it? and I don?t have the freedom to check to a quarterback sneak because we don?t have that call if we?re not in the huddle.?
Ben Roethlisberger

Wednesday?s quiz

Where did Ben Roethlisberger play his college football?

Tuesday?s quiz

Roy Williams was basketball coach at Kansas before Bill Self.

Monday?s quiz

In 15 of the last 17 Super Bowls, the starting QB for the AFC team has been either Brady, Peyton Manning or Roethlisberger. During that time, Rich Gannon, Joe Flacco are the only other QB?s who have started for AFC teams.

************************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) A young man named Tyler Hilinski took his own life Tuesday; he was 21 years old.

What makes this newsworthy is that Hilinski was supposed to be Washington State?s starting QB next fall- he started the Coogs? Holiday Bowl game against Michigan State last month. Playing QB for Mike Leach is often a ticket to playing pro football, he is that good a coach.

Apparently a suicide note was left; my thoughts and prayers go out to his family, who are now left with a near-infinite number of unanswered questions. It is a very sad thing.

12) You never know what demons lurk inside a person; would it be that terrible if we were all a little nicer to each other? In today?s society, kindness is often mistaken for weakness. Swagger and cockiness are attractive, but what if we were just nicer to each other?

Playing quarterback is a tough thing; you?re the most important player on the field. In this age of social media overload, people can hide behind their keyboards and be quite cruel. Hopefully that is not what happened here. I just hope his family can find peace when all of this settles down.

11) After consecutive 5-11 seasons, New Jersey Jets lowered season-ticket prices for 2018 by an average of 11%, lowest tickets have been for Jet games since 2008.

10) Clippers are 12-4 with PG Milos Teodosic in the lineup, 10-17 without him.

9) U of Arizona?s new football coach Kevin Sumlin will make $21.5M over the next four years; $11M from Arizona, $10.5M from Texas A&M, which fired him last month.

8) North Carolina 87, Clemson 79? Tigers are now 0-59 in Chapel Hill. Zero. and. 59.

Clemson played scared in the first half, were down 18, then caught fire, made 15 shots in a row and got within 71-69, but their rally fell just short. Clemson should make the NCAAs.

7) The Alabama linebacker who tried to punch an assistant coach during the national title game has transferred to I-AA Tennessee State.

6) When the Vikings took a knee on the PAT after the game-winning TD Sunday, it had to be been the first time since punters became specialists that both teams? punters were on the field on the same time.

There was a time where some punters played other positions (Danny White, Dan Pastorini were QB?s, Donny Anderson was a RB) but that was a long time ago.

5) Jordan Tucker was #82 recruit in the Class of 2017; he signed with Duke. After playing only 14 minutes in two games for the Blue Devils, Tucker is transferring to Butler.

4) April 6, the Lakers will unveil a statue honoring Elgin Baylor outside Staples Center. Baylor played for the Lakers for 14 years- he was 1st-team NBA 10 of those years. He will be the sixth Laker to have a statue outside Staples.

3) According to the Wall Street Journal, the world?s busiest K-Mart is located??.in Guam.

2) Some limited partners of the Pittsburgh Steelers will apparently lobby owner Art Rooney to fire coach Mike Tomlin. This is a bad idea.

Tomlin is 116-60 (.659) with an 8-7 playoff record, a Super Bowl title and no losing seasons in his 11-year stint as the Steelers? head coach??.

In case you were wondering, Bill Cowher was 149-90-1 as Steelers coach (.623). with a Super Bowl ring and a 12-9 playoff record.

1) Steelers are 45-19 in regular season games the last four years, but only 3-5 in playoffs since Tomlin won his Super Bowl. QB Ben Roethlisberger is nearing the end of his great career, and there is no promising young QB on the Steelers? roster.

In the Crease - Week 16
January 17, 2018

STREAKY TEAMS

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Calgary 7-0 past seven games overall Anaheim Under 7-2 past nine games overall
Colorado 7-0 past seven games overall Dallas Over 7-3 past 10 games overall
Edmonton 3-6-1 past 10 games overall St. Louis Under 13-4 past 17 games overall

Boston Strong

The Boston Bruins continues to play tremendous hockey, and they have vaulted to second place in the Atlantic Division behind the Eastern Conference leading Tampa Bay Lightning. The B's have posted a 9-0-4 record over the past 13 games, last losing in regulation back on Dec. 14 against Washington. The last time they suffered a setback on the road in regulation was Dec. 4 in Nashville. That's impressive. Total bettors have warmed up to the B's, too, as the 'over' is a rather impressive 5-2-1 across their past eight outings.

MTS + Jets = W

The Vegas Golden Knights lead the NHL with an impressive 18-2-1-1 mark at home this season, and the Tampa Bay Lightning have made a lot of headlines with a league-leading 65 points, including a 17-4-1-0 mark at home. However, it seems like the Winnipeg Jets have been overlooked. The Central Division-leading Jets have posted 59 points, tied for third-most in the NHL, and a lot of the damage has come at MTS Centre in Winnipeg. They're a rather impressive 16-3-1-0 in 20 home dates so far this season, and it seems like they're being overlooked when casual fans and the media talk about the season's best sides. Bettors know Winnipeg has been a lock at home. They are home just once in the next four games, but then they start a miraculous 10-game homestand from Jan. 30-Feb. 20.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday, January 17

There are just two games on Wednesday night, but one of the meetings is between two Original Six members. The Canadiens and red-hot Bruins square off in Beantown, with the home team a heavy favorite. The Habs have been the hab-nots lately, winning just two of their past nine games overall. They're also 1-4 in their past five inside the division, while going 1-6 in their past seven against Eastern Conference foes. Montreal has also dropped four in a row on the road, while going 1-5 in their past six games against teams with an overall winning mark.

For Boston, they have won seven in a row inside the division. They're also an impressive 6-0 in their past six when scoring two or fewer goals in the most recent outing. They have won five of their past six games, they're 8-2 in their past 10 against Eastern Conference foes and 9-3 in their past 12 overall. They're also 22-8 in their past 30 against teams with a losing record. As hot as the B's have been the Canadiens have had their number lately. Montreal is 6-1 in their past seven trips to Boston, and 11-5 in the past 16 meetings overall. The road team has won nine of the past 12 in this series, too.

Thursday, January 18

The Capitals and the Devils will meet in Newark, and if recent meetings are any indication, the road team is about to come away with two points. Washington has won each of their past seven trips to New Jersey, and they're an impressive 14-3 in the past 17 meetings overall in this series. The road team has won five times in the past seven in this series, too. The 'over' has hit in four of the past five, while going 3-1-1 in the past five meetings in Newark. Washington has won six of their past seven overall, and they're 37-15 in the past 52 against teams with a winning overall record. New Jersey has won six of their past eight at home, but they're just 1-6 in the past seven overall.

The Sharks haven't had a lot of success against winning teams, and the Avalanche surprisingly are a winning side. They have been red-hot lately, and they're looking for more. San Jose is 6-2 in their past eight against Western Conference sides, but they're just 2-5 in the past seven against winning teams and 2-8 in their past 10 against Central Division squads. The Avalanche are 7-0 in their past seven, they have won six in a row at home and they're 6-0 in their past six against teams with a winning overall mark. The 'over' is 6-0-1 in the past seven meetings, and 8-3-1 in the past 12 battles in Denver.

Friday, January 19

The Kings and Ducks renew acquaintances again, and if last time is any indication, this oine could be a feisty affair. There were three separate fights within four seconds in the most recent battle on Saturday in Los Angeles, with the Ducks coming away with a hard-fought 4-2 victory. It was the first win for the Ducks in three tries against the Kings this season, as L.A. won 2-1 in a shootout on Nov. 25, and 4-3 in overtime on Nov. 7. Five of the past seven meetings in this series has resulted in one-goal decisions.

Saturday, January 20

The Devils and Flyers hook up in matinee action in the City of Brotherly Love. These teams just met in Newark, and the Flyers came away with a 5-3 win behind Brian Elliott as the 'over' hit. The 'over' is an impressive 6-1 in the past seven games for Philadelphia heading into play on Wednesday. No foolin', but the Flyers came away with a 3-0 win in their most recent home meeting against Philly on April 1 last season, but they was their only win in five tries against the Devils last season. It was Philly's only win in the past four at home against Jersey dating back to Dec. 11, 2014.

The Maple Leafs and Senators continue the Battle of Ontario in Canada's capital city, and the Senators hope that things go down like they did in the most recent meeting in Toronto on Jan. 10. The Senators won 4-3 in that meeting, and the Sens also doubled up the Leafs 6-3 back on Oct. 21 in the first meeting in Kanata. In fact the Leafs have dropped four in a row against the Senators since winning Jan. 14 last season on the road by a 4-2 score. The 'over' has cashed in five of the past six meetings between these provincial rivals, too.

Bruins rip Canadiens in Julien's return
January 17, 2018

BOSTON (AP) The Bruins showed former coach Claude Julien what a changed style looks like in Boston.

David Pastrnak and Ryan Spooner each scored an early goal, Tuukka Rask stopped 21 shots and the Bruins beat Montreal 4-1 Wednesday night in Canadiens coach Julien's return to Boston for the first time since he was fired nearly a year ago.

Dismissed last Feb. 7 in his 10th season, Julien - who led the Bruins to the 2011 Stanley Cup championship - was replaced by assistant and current Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy, who opted for more up-tempo, charge-into-the-zone play from his defensemen as opposed to Julien's mostly defensive-minded style.

''We're trying to play with pace and have guys that can play that way,'' said Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid, who was back after missing 36 games with a broken leg. ''It's an advantage that way. I think everyone tries to play at their strength. We've been a little bit more up-tempo.''

The surging Bruins have earned at least a point in 14 straight games (10-0-4), their longest stretch since going 15-0-1 in March 2014.

Julien was bothered by the play of his team, which had played well lately, going 2-0-2 after a five-game losing streak.

''We laid an egg - not good enough,'' he said. ''Obviously, it's a disappointing loss, especially with the situation we're in.''

Brad Marchand added a power-play goal in the third period, David Krejci had an empty-netter and Patrice Bergeron had two assists for Boston, which posted its second win over the Canadiens in five days. The teams meet again in Montreal on Saturday night.

''We're trying to do that against everybody, to be honest,'' Cassidy of his team's style.

Jakub Jerabek scored his first NHL goal for Montreal, and Carey Price made 28 saves.

Montreal had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the game's opening minute, but failed to maintain momentum.

''We made some mistakes in the D-zone and stopped playing,'' Jerabek said.

Rask extended his career-best point streak to 15 games (13-0-2), including a 4-3 shootout win at Montreal last Saturday.

Trailing 1-0, Boston tied it 6:50 into the first when Pastrnak took a pass from Bergeron at the bottom of the left circle and slipped a wrister behind Price.

The Bruins took the lead early in the second when Spooner's backhander from just outside the crease caromed into the net off the right skate of Montreal forward Jonathan Drouin.

Montreal had a two-man power-play advantage for 69 seconds midway into the second - immediately after Rask made a pad stop on Drouin's clean break in - but Boston limited the Canadiens' shots to mostly lower-percentage chances from the outside.

Marchand's team-leading 19th goal came 3:40 into the period.

Jerabek's shot from the left point found its way through a group of players in front and slipped into the net 31 seconds into the game.

NOTES: Julien got a brief ovation during a video tribute midway into the opening period, but the crowd's chance for prolonged applause was drowned out by loud music until the next faceoff. ''It's always something that you kind of dread a little bit,'' he said. ''You get a little emotional, but at the same time you're trying to keep your emotions intact so you can coach a game. I appreciate what they did for me.'' ... Willie O'Ree, 82, was honored in a ceremonial puck drop before the game, commemorating the 60th anniversary that he became the first black player to play in an NHL game. He was with Boston and played at Montreal. ... McQuaid took the spot of Kevan Miller, who was out sick. McQuaid had been healthy for a few weeks, but unable to crack the lineup. ... It was the 740th regular season meeting between the rivals.

UP NEXT

Canadiens: At the Washington Capitals on Friday.

Bruins: At the New York Islanders on Thursday.

Thursday?s 6-pack

? SMU 83, Wichita State 78? Pretty big upset in the AAC.

? Alabama 76, Auburn 71? Crimson Tide won, even though Sexton didn?t play

? Fresno St 77, San Diego St 73? Mountain West might get only one team in NCAA.

? Stanford 86, Arizona State 77? ASU is 2-4 in Pac-12; they were 12-0 before that.

? Missouri 59, Tennessee 55? Cuonzo Martin wins first game against his old team.

? Surprising: last year, Forbes magazine listed the Pirates as the 17th (out of 30) most valuable MLB franchise. Thought they?d be lower than that.

Quote of the Day

?It?s refreshing to come to an environment where the team is willing to continually put resources into the club and continue to move forward and try to provide the best possible product for its fans.?
ex-Pirate Gerrit Cole, the newest Houston Astro

Thursday?s quiz

Who holds the NFL record for quickest TD scored in an overtime game?

Wednesday?s quiz

Ben Roethlisberger played his college football at Miami, OH

Tuesday?s quit

Roy Williams was basketball coach at Kansas before Bill Self.

*********************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) Webster?s defines scapegoat this way: ?a person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency.?

Pittsburgh Steelers lost a home playoff game 45-42 Sunday; there was much unrest in Steelers? Nation, so a scapegoat was found? offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

You would think defensive coordinator would take some grief, but no. Maybe when the QB, a future Hall of Famer, tells the media that he isn?t allowed to audible to a QB sneak, maybe that was the straw that broke the camel?s back.

12) Speaking of quarterbacks not being allowed to audible, when Mike Martz ran the Rams? offense, his QB?s, Kurt Warner and Marc Bulger, weren?t allowed to audible either. Doesn?t make a lot of sense to me, especially when you have a veteran QB, but coaches have big egos, too.

11) TCU?s best guard, Jaylen Fisher, is out indefinitely after hurting his knee in practice. TCU is 2-4 in Big X, with five of the six games decided by 5 or less points- 3 of the 5 games went to OT.

10) Shaquille O?Neal?s son Shareef is a 6-7 power forward who is committed to play for Arizona next year- he is considered a 4-star (out of 5) recruit.

9) South Carolina 76, Kentucky 68? Wildcats led by 14 points with 11:30 left, lost in Columbia brickfest Tuesday where teams combined to go 6-34 on arc. Kentucky used nine players; six freshmen (five of them started) and three sophomores.

8) Thru Tuesday?s college basketball games, the national average on free throws was 70.9%, which would be the highest it has been the last 17 years, and 3rd year in row it has gone up.

Some conference championship game trends:
7) Over last four years, favorites are 7-1 vs spread in conference championship games.

6) In Belichick/Brady era, Patriots are 7-4 in AFC title games (6-5 vs spread), 5-1 at home (3-3 vs spread).

5) Last 12 years, road favorites in conference title games are 1-2-1 vs spread.

4) According to ESPN Stats, the last five NFL teams that won playoff games with a walk-off TD lost their next game, by an average of 23 points.

3) Gene Steratore will be the referee in the Super Bowl; he?s also worked 24 D-I basketball games this winter, 22 of them involving Big 14 teams.

Steratore wound up working 60 basketball games last year, 63 the year before.

2) Teams are averaging 70.2 possessions per game this season, most in the last 17 years. Teams are playing a little faster, but the shot clock was 0:35 most of that time, not the current 0:30.

1) Teams are scoring 73.6 ppg, most in the last 17 years; five years ago, teams averaged only 66.9 ppg, so that is positive change. People like to watch good offense, even if it is really bad defense.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

? East Tennessee State 62, Furman 61? Bucs win battle of leaders in SoCon.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??..

13) Bill Belichick got his first NFL head coaching job in 1991, when he was 39; he interviewed 85 coaches for assistants? jobs that winter- the first one he hired?

Guy named Nick Saban. Wonder whatever happened to him?

12) Six of the top 21 college basketball teams lost Wednesday night. Been a weird year.

11) I see that they?re moving up the start of college basketball season next year, up three days to November 6, which will also be Election Day. They?re trying to get the start of college hoop out of football?s shadows? hopefully there won?t be any MAC football games on TV that Tuesday.

10) NBC television is advertising the Olympics a lot- one of the ads has an athlete saying how every kid?s dream is to be in the Olympics. I can honestly say, not once did I ever dream of being in the Olympics, especially the Winter Olympics. Good thing, since I was a lousy athlete, but my idea of fun isn?t slalom skiing or anything to do with cold weather.

9) Funny story on Twitter this week about how a Vikings fan named Sara Zeigler got so excited when Stefon Diggs caught that pass at the end of the game Sunday night, she jumped on her couch and landed on her remote control, which changed the station on the TV before Diggs scored, so she didn?t see the winning TD she was so excited about, until one of the 1,000 replays after the game.

Moral of story: Remote controls are very valuable; never jump on them.

There have been numerous stories about people waiting for the PAT to be tried/not tried after that Minnesota touchdown, since the pointspread hung in the balance. Had to be fun to be in Las Vegas sportsbook for that.

8) Philadelphia Eagles went for it on 4th down 26 times this year, most in the NFL- they made the first down/TD on 17 of those 26 tries.

7) Shohei Ohtani is both a pitcher and a hitter; the Angels? newest free agent acquisition has caused the folks at CBSSports.com some grief this winter, as they worked to figure out how Ohtani will be dealt with in the fantasy league website?s stats column.

Apparently the problem has been resolved; doesn?t sound like Ohtani will be in the lineup enough to merit his inclusion as a fantasy league hitter. Albert Pujols DH?s for the Angels, so it Ohtani is the DH, Pujols has to play first base? Not ideal.

6) Cavaliers 104, Magic 103? Cavaliers blew a 23-point lead but survived the dismal Magic. Cleveland is 16-5 at home, 3-17-1 against the spread.

5) Surprising stat: Of the last eight Stanley Cup champs, only one of the eight (?17 Penguins) finished higher than 15th in NHL in power play efficiency during the regular season.

4) Creighton F Martin Krampelj will miss the rest of the season with a major knee injury; he?s started every game for the Bluejays, scoring 11.9 ppg, grabbing 8 rebounds a game- a big loss.

3) When I was a little kid 100 or so years ago (late 60?s), they built a restaurant near our house? Valle?s Steakhouse. Place had this huge, Vegas-like sign in front of it, and it was a fancy place. Cloth napkins, all that.

Valle?s went out of business a long time ago; the building is a college now, Bryant & Stratton College, and I found out this week that Bryant & Stratton is starting a basketball program. They haven?t said where they?re going to play their games. If I remember right, Bryant & Stratton used to be called Albany Business College, and it was located in the city of Albany.

I?m not 100% sure that ABC became Bryant & Stratton, but one came to being when the other closed its doors.

2) Anyway, Albany Business College had a good junior college basketball team back in the day; Willard Rice was the coach? I went to a camp once run by Coach Rice and his son Steve. They had a team when I was in college (late 70?s)- they used to play the Albany JV team every year, so this is life coming full circle. From looks of things, Bryant & Stratton is a 4-year school now.

1) One last story about Valle?s Steakhouse; one summer, my dad?s family was in town to visit and we all went to Valle?s for dinner. Probably 12-14 people, so a big group. The waitress brings a lot of dinners out at the same time, and a small dish slipped at the top of her load? she went to grab it???and there was a very loud noise. Food scattered everywhere.

I?m pretty sure the waitress was fired before the dishes stopped spinning around; as an annoying 10-year old, I was sure it was the funniest thing I?d ever seen, even if I did have to wait to eat a while longer. It was tremendous- stuff like that didn?t happen at Carroll?s Hamburgers. my preferred place to eat when I was 10.

Ekblad scores in OT, Panthers beat Gallant, Golden Knights
January 20, 2018

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) Aaron Ekblad scored 40 seconds into overtime to lift the Panthers to a 4-3 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday night, spoiling former coach Gerard Gallant's return to Florida.

Ekblad grabbed a rebound in the high slot and fired it past Malcolm Subban to give Florida its second win in six games this month.

Aleksander Barkov scored his league-leading fifth short-handed goal of the season and had two assists, and Evgenii Dadonov and Jamie McGinn also scored for the Panthers. James Reimer stopped 33 shots.

William Karlsson had a goal and an assist, and David Perron and James Neal also scored for Vegas. Subban finished with 22 saves.

Neal had tied the score with 2:09 left in the third when he roofed a shot past Reimer from in front.

Gallant, fird by the Panthers in November 2016, got a standing ovation during a scoreboard video tribute in the first period. Heacknowledged the tribute with a wave of his hand.

DUCKS 2, KINGS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ryan Kesler deflected home Francois Beauchemin's shot for the tiebreaking goal with 7:39 to play and Anaheim won its second Freeway Faceoff in seven days.

Adam Henrique scored early in the third period and John Gibson made 23 saves for the Ducks, who have won six of nine overall.

Rookie Alex Iafallo evened it for Los Angeles moments after Henrique's goal, but Kesler's long deflection sent the puck bouncing past Jonathan Quick. Anaheim then hung on in a frantic final minute to even the archrivals' season series at two games apiece.

Quick stopped 29 shots in the Kings' sixth consecutive loss, extending their longest skid of the season.

CANADIENS 3, CAPITALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Max Pacioretty had two goals and an assist to help Montreal break a three-game losing streak.

Paul Byron also scored for the Canadiens. Antii Niemi, playing in place of Carey Price, who had been in goal for eight consecutive games, stopped 24 shots.

John Carlson and Lars Eller scored for the Capitals, and Philipp Grubauer finished with 22 saves.

The Capitals, who returned from a five-day bye with an overtime loss at New Jersey on Thursday night, have lost back-to-back games for the second time this season.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Longshots to win The Masters in April:

110-1? JB Holmes

135-1? Jason Dufner

150-1? Ian Poulter

165-1? Ollie Schneiderjans

200-1? Patton Kizzire

225-1? Charles Howell III

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) There is too much anger and bad news in the world, so I give you this:

Former NFL running back Warrick Dunn?s mom was a policewoman in Baton Rouge; she was killed by a gunman when Dunn was 18. Dunn went on to star at Florida State, and then played for 12 years in the NFL.

To honor his late mother, Dunn started a foundation that built homes with Habitat for Humanity for single-parent families. He is still doing that.

Last month, Dunn?s foundation gave away their 158th and 159th homes, one in Detroit, one in Atlanta. You don?t think this makes a difference?

12) In 2006, Dunn?s foundation built a home in Gainesville, Ga; the family had an 11-year old boy who you may have heard of.

Deshaun Watson, now QB for the Houston Texans.

Who knows what would?ve happened to that family if they hadn?t been given a home in 2006. Sometimes all people need is a chance.

11) 106 college football players are leaving school early to apply for the NFL Draft- there were 74-95-95 such players the last three years. 26 of the players come from SEC schools, 24 more from ACC schools.

Florida State, LSU, Texas all lost six players each.

10) If JD Martinez can?t play ball for $25M a year, then the Red Sox should tell him to take a hike and Martinez should go find a real job, where he won?t make $25M a year.

Enough already; he?s had only two great years and will be 31 in August. Martinez has played more than 123 games in a season twice in his career.

9) They re-sodded the middle of the field in Philadelphia this week, after lot of players slipped in last week?s game. Re-sodding a field in the Northeast in January can be dicey, but Doug Pederson said the field is in great shape, so we?ll take his word for it.

8) There are murmurs on the Interweb that Tom Brady has multiple stitches in his passing hand, which is why he wore gloves to his news conference Friday.

Betting line has dropped from 9 to 7.5 points; if somehow Brady didn?t play Sunday, the line with Brian Hoyer playing QB for New England would be Patriots, -2.

7) Alabama hired former New Mexico coach Mike Locksley as its offensive coordinator; he was OC at both Illinois and Maryland, but is considered a better recruiter than a tactician.

6) Michigan State 85, Indiana 57? For some reason Alex Rodriguez was at this game last night, sitting in the student section, wearing an ?Izzone? t-shirt. He?s been on TV a lot lately; he was at a Laker game with JLo and the kids, and was also at another game with his famous wife. Haven?t heard if ARod is going to get the Sunday Night Baseball gig on ESPN, but he?d be good at it.

5) Eagles-Jaguars will meet in London next fall; game could be a Super Bowl rematch, if both underdogs win Sunday. NFL fans in London deserve better games than they gotten recently.

4) NFL has an interesting way of staying in the news 24/7; ESPN started the other day with Mel Kiper?s first mock draft for 2018? he had the Browns taking Wyoming QB Josh Allen with the #1 pick, and then the Giants taking UCLA QB Josh Rosen with the #2 pick.

3) Le?Veon Bell showed up five minutes before the END of the Steelers? walk-through the day before their playoff game, which may be part of why some of the limited partners in the team want a coaching change. Apparently he wasn?t the only player who had a trouble with being on time, and also an assistant coach or two was in that group.

Can remember Troy Aikman telling Joe Buck in an interview program how he retired from the NFL because discipline on the Cowboys slipped badly under Barry Switzer, and it drove him nuts. Aikman was a perfectionist, and he couldn?t stand sloppy preparation.

2) Have you seen the commercial on TV where the guy in the baseball cap adopts a dog at the shelter and brings him home in his truck? Didn?t notice until about the 70th time it was on, but the guy who adopts the dog has an artificial left leg. Just noticed it, thats all.

1) I?ve been scolded by some for talking about politics on here, but I will say this: if the government shuts down, then no politician should receive a penny of pay until it starts up again, and then no retroactive paychecks. If you want to get paid, do your damn job.
