13) Monday night was a COLLEGE football game, not the NFL. ESPN sucks for interviewing Jalen Hurts after the game- they were probably hoping he would pout, but the kid is all class.

Have you ever even seen an NFL QB who was benched interviewed after a game when his sub came in and won the game? Ever? What was the point?

12) Second half of the national title game is played with two freshman QB?s; that defies logic.

11) Four of the last five national champs in college football trailed by 10+ points in 4th quarter of the championship game.

10) Kudos to the Clippers? DeAndre Jordan, who is 26 for his last 33 on the foul line. Working on your game pays off? teams will stop fouling him on purpose soon.

9) Clippers? Lou Williams is #2 in NBA in 4th quarter scoring; Clippers are his 5th team in the last five years. I remember seeing him play AAU ball in Orlando back when I used to go down there every July to see games. Seems like long time ago but it was 2004, not that long ago.

8) Patriots could?ve had the #4 pick in April?s draft if they had traded Jimmy Garoppolo to the Browns instead of San Francisco. Cleveland was willing to trade Houston?s pick to get a QB, but New England obviously wanted to ship him out of the AFC, and in fairness, Houston was 3-4 at the time of the trade- no one knew the pick wound wind up being #4.

5) Unusual Fact of the Day: 1972 Miami Dolphins went 17-0, but starting QB Bob Greise started only six of the 17 games, and only one playoff game- the Super Bowl. When Miami won 14-7 in the Super Bowl, Greise threw only 11 passes the whole game. Football was different then. Backup QB for Miami back then was Earl Morrall, who also started Super Bowl III for the Colts.

4) Toronto Blue Jays were the oldest team in the major leagues last season.

3) Missouri football gets important, good news; QB Drew Lock will be back next season. He is very good.

1) One of the interesting things about our country is how different sports are lot more popular in various areas of the country; New York ranked #52 out of 56 markets in ratings for the college football national title game Monday night. No one on NYC talk radio talks about college football recruiting, ever, not even on Signing Day.

You watch the Paul Finebaum Show on SEC Network and people in the south are discussing Ole Miss? nickel defense on weekday afternoons in April. I?m not judging, just noting the diversity our country has makes it a more interesting place.

Ryan Suter, Devan Dubnyk help Wild beat Blackhawks 2-1

CHICAGO (AP) Ryan Suter gave Minnesota the lead on a 4-on-4 early in the third period, Devan Dubnyk made 34 saves and the Wild held off the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 on Wednesday night to end a two-game slide.

Jonas Brodin scored in the second period for Minnesota (23-17-4). The Wild pulled two points ahead of Chicago (21-16-6) in the tight Central Division and tussle for playoff spots in the Western Conference.

Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook, a healthy scratch in Chicago's 8-2 win in Ottawa on Tuesday night, was back in the lineup and celebrated with his first goal since opening night.

Chicago's Anton Forsberg made 25 saves in his third straight start.

The Blackhawks acquired winger Anthony Duclair and defenseman Adam Clendening from Arizona before the game in a trade for right wing Richard Panik and minor league forward Laurent Dauphin.

SENATORS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Tom Pyatt broke a tie with 3:05 left and Ottawa beat Toronto in the final game for both teams before their bye weeks.

Pyatt took a feed from Matt Duchene on a 3-on-1 - after Toronto defenseman Morgan Rielly got caught pinching at Ottawa's blue line - and beat Frederik Andersen high to the blocker side.

Thomas Chabot, Mike Hoffman and Gabriel Dumont also scored to help the Senators rebound from an 8-2 home loss to Chicago on Tuesday night. Craig Anderson made 44 saves after being pulled against the Blackhawks. Andreas Borgman, James van Riemsdyk and Rielly scored for Toronto.

The Boston Bruins are on quite the roll lately, picking up at least one point in 11 consecutive games, going 8-0-2-1 during the impressive span. They last lost in regulation on Dec. 14 against the nemesis Washington Capitals. They also fell to the Caps 4-3 in a shootout on Dec. 28. The good news is that the B's do not have to face the Caps again this season. The offense has kicked into high gear for Boston, making bettors a lot of money in the process. Boston is averaging 4.5 goals per game over the past 10 games, so it's no surprise the 'over' is 4-1-1 over the past six outings.

Single Digits


The Tampa Bay Lightning continue to show the way with 65 points, leading the NHL in the quest for the President's Trophy at roughly the halfway mark. Through 43 games they're 31-9-1-2, and they're the only team in the league yet to experience their 10th loss of the season. The Lightning also lead the league with an impressive plus-53 goal differential, while posting a sparkling 17-3-1 record at home. Only the expansion Vegas Golden Knights have had a better record (18-2-1) at home so far this season. They have rattled off three straight 'over' results, too, while averaging 3.4 goals per game over the past 10 contests.

Looking Ahead

The Blackhawks host the Wild in the Windy City and they're slight favorites. Minnesota suffered a 3-2 setback in overtime against the visiting Flames with their backup goaltender Alex Stalock in between the pipes. They will have Devan Dubnyk in the blue ice against Jeff Glass in a matchup that appears to have the visitors. Of course, Chicago's offense came alive with eight goals in Ottawa on Tuesday night. Something's gotta give in this one, as neither team has been very good against the number lately. Minnesota is 3-15 in their past 18 road games against a team with a winning home record, and 0-4 in their past four on no days of rest. Chicago is 1-6 in their past seven in the second end of a back-to-back situation, and they're 7-18 in their past 25 against teams with a winning record. However, they have won five of the past six at United Center.

Thursday, January 11


The Hurricanes and Capitals will do battle in another light night on the frozen surface. Carolina entered play Wednesday just one point out of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. They're 1-4 in their past five overall, and 0-4 in their past four tries against teams with a winning record. For whatever reason they have shined with one day of rest, going 4-1 in their past five. And they're 11-5 in their past 16 games on a Thursday, for what that's worth.

The Caps have rattled off victories in 16 of their past 21 games overall, while posting an impressive 41-12 record in the past 53 outings at home. Like Carolina, the Caps have had success on Thursdays, going 37-16 in their past 53 on the day. More importantly, they're 81-37 in their past 118 against a team with a losing record. They usually take care of the lesser teams when called upon. They've taken care of the Hurricanes, too, going 6-0 in their past six home meetings with Carolina, and 4-0 in the past four meetings overall. The home team has won eight of the past 11 in this series. The 'over' is 4-0-1 in the past five meetings, too. The teams will also meet in the second end of a home-and-home series on Friday in Raleigh, too.

Friday, January 12

The Blackhawks will host the Jets, and Winnipeg will be looking for revenge after a rare 5-1 loss at MTS Centre back on Dec. 14. The Jets are 16-3-1 in 20 home games this season, and their worst loss came at the hands of the 'Hawks. Chicago entered play on Wednesday winning five of their past six home games, although they're just 9-21 in their past 30 games against Western Conference teams. The Jets have been rolling up the offense lately, going for four or more goals in each of their past three outings, and six of the past seven. Winnipeg is averaging 3.9 goals per game over the past 10 contests, while Chicago has erupted for 28 goals over their past six entering play Wednesday.

The Oilers and Coyotes will do battle in the desert on Friday night with Arizona looking for revenge. Edmonton won 3-2 in overtime against Arizona in the most recent meeting on Nov. 28 as Cam Talbot edged out Scott Wedgewood. The 'Yotes have dropped four in a row against the Oil dating back to a 2-1 win on Nov. 27 in Edmonton. That victory was part of a home-and-home sweep for the Coyotes, so it hasn't been that long since they've had success against the Oilers. Five of the past six meetings in this series have hit the 'under'.

The Islanders and Rangers renew their rivalry at Madison Square Garden in matinee action. New York can focus squarely on hockey, too, as neither of their football teams came close to qualifying for the NFL postseason. The Rangers dropped a 4-3 decision in a shootout back on Oct. 19 at home against the Islanders, and they have dropped four in a row against their Gotham rivals dating back to a 5-3 win by the Blueshirts in the regular season opener on Oct. 13, 2016. These games have been high scoring lately, too, with the 'over' going 5-1-1 in the past seven meetings.

It's always a good time when the Ducks and Kings renew their Southern California rivalry. The first two battles this season have been amazing, with L.A. winning 2-1 in a shootout on Nov. 25 at Staples Center, and 4-3 in overtime at Honda Center back on Nov. 7. Five of the past six in this series, and seven of the past nine meetings, have resulted in one-goal games. We rarely see a blowout when these teams sharpen the skates and square off with one another. L.A. hasn't won at home in regulation since Dec. 5, a five-game span which has seen them go 3-1-1, with all three victories and one loss coming in overtime.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??.

13) Further evidence that I?m an idiot; spent 90 minutes in the local DMV office today, waiting to get my license renewed. No big deal, lot of people in there? not sure how their system works, other than some 70-ish year-old lady held things up for several minutes because she had to have her license picture taken 5-6 times until it was just right.

Anyway, they finally call my number and I go up to the counter, only it isn?t my license that needs renewal. It is my dad?s license that needs renewal? he passed away three years ago. Whoops.

12) 2007 Jacksonville Jaguars are only visiting team that has beaten the Steelers twice in Pittsburgh in the same season. Roethlisberger had one of his worst games ever against the Jags back in October- he threw five INTs, two of which were run back for TD?s.

11) Seattle Seahawks fired the OC and offensive line coach, and there are rumors the DC will be gone soon, too, so the Seahawks are basically starting over again with a new coaching staff and an aging roster. As long as they have Russell Wilson, they?re going to be a contender.

10) Heard on TV Tuesday nite that Fresno State isn?t flying charters to road game as much now, which is a big deal in the Mountain West, which has schools in out-of-the-way places. Flying commercial flights to Fort Collins, Logan, Laramie makes travel a lot more cumbersome.

9) Michigan State 76, Rutgers 72 OT? Spartans were a presumptive Final Four pick few days ago, then they got bamboozled by Ohio State and then this. Go figure.

Rutgers gave coach Steve Pikiell a contract extension this week; he?s upgraded their team a lot so far, but it hasn?t shown up that much in the won-loss column. Yet.

8) Villanova 89, Xavier 65? Xavier is 15-3, but two of their losses were by 16-24 points; they?re a streaky/erratic team. Villanova scored 87+ points in its last six games.

7) Oakland (-16) 95, Youngstown State 82? Penguins outscored Oakland 8-0 over the last 1:38 for the backdoor cover.

6) UMass 86, LaSalle 79 OT? Explorers were up 16 at the half, but Luwane Pipkins went for 44 and the Minutemen improved to 9-8. Tough loss for 7-10 LaSalle.

3) The power of television: In only four days, that book Michael Wolff wrote about the White House sold over a million copies. Guy was on every talk show in America over the weekend.

2) Starlin Castro has requested a trade from the Marlins, who acquired him in the Giancarlo Stanton trade December 11. It is funny when people start jumping off a sinking ship, before they?re actually even on the ship.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) Mikael Backlund had an empty-net goal and a pair of assists, helping lift the Calgary Flames to their sixth straight victory with a 4-2 win over the Florida Panthers on Friday night.

Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk and Sean Monahan also scored for the Flames, and David Rittich stopped 41 shots in his first start in seven games.

Evgenii Dadanov scored both goals for the Panthers, breaking a 19-game goal drought. James Reimer made 25 saves in his 16th consecutive start, but it wasn't enough to keep the Panthers from their fourth loss in five games.

CAPITALS 4, HURRICANES 3

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Jay Beagle scored with 1.3 seconds remaining and the Washington Capitals rallied to beat the Carolina Hurricanes.

Brett Connolly notched the tying goal with 3:08 left, and Alex Ovechkin added his NHL-leading 28th goal and two assists for first-place Washington.

Lars Eller scored on the power play and Philipp Grubauer stopped 36 shots to help the Capitals earn their second come-from-behind victory in Raleigh in 10 nights. Washington won 5-4 in overtime on Jan. 2 on two late goals by Ovechkin.

The Hurricanes got power-play goals from Jordan Staal and Sebastian Aho - with each player assisting on the other's goal - and an even-strength goal from Jeff Skinner.

CANUCKS 5, BLUE JACKETS 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Sven Baertschi sparked a four-goal second period for Vancouver, Jacob Markstrom had 27 saves and the Canucks beat the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Seth Jones put Columbus up 1-0 during a strong first period, but Vancouver powered ahead in the second. Baertschi, Erik Gudbranson, Brandon Gaunce and Alexander Edler scored, and Jake Virtanen added an empty-net goal with 9 seconds left in the third to help the Canucks snap a five-game skid.

Thomas Vanek and Henrik Sedin each had two assists for Vancouver, which won for just the third time since Dec. 7.

Sergei Bobrovsky let in four of the Canucks' 12 shots in the second period. He finished with 24 saves. Scott Harrington also scored for Columbus.

BLACKHAWKS 2, JETS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Rookie center David Kampf scored his first NHL goal and added an assist on his 23rd birthday, Jeff Glass blocked 31 shots and the Chicago Blackhawks held off the Winnipeg Jets.

Jan Rutta also scored for the Blackhawks, who ended the Jets' three-game winning streak and handed Winnipeg its first regulation loss in seven games (6-0-1).

The 32-year-old Glass lost a bid for his first career shutout when Patrik Laine scored with 3:41 left in the third period. Winnipeg, the high-scoring Central Division leaders, came on with a late flurry, but Glass was sharp in his fifth NHL game to improve to 3-1-1.

Chicago's No. 1 goalie, Corey Crawford missed his ninth game with an upper-body injury. No timetable is set for his return.

Anthony Duclair, acquired from Arizona on Wednesday as part of a four-player trade, had an assist in his Blackhawks debut.

13) It is wrong to sit back and say nothing about the stuff thats gone on in the White House this week. Saying nothing gives tacit approval to what has gone on, that the President of our country can openly say racist things and get away with it.

The second paragraph of our Declaration of Independence starts this way:

?We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.?

Rich people aren?t better than poor people; no race or religion is better than another.

12) Arizona Cardinals players wore a saying on t-shirts this season:

Trust, loyalty, respect.

Our culture is losing its respect for the diversity that has made this country great. Without respect, common decency takes a backseat to what we?re seeing now. Its not good.

11) You can go on baseballprospectus.com and look up salary info for every major league team; it tracks salary commitments from now until 2023.

Right now, the Oakland A?s have $12,333,000 on the books for 2019.
Los Angeles Dodgers have $116,426,000 on the books for 2019.

10) Bronx Bombers have $87,343,000 on the books for 2020, $40,200,000 to pitchers.
New York Mets have $56,000,000 on the books for 2020, $43M of it to Cespedes/Bruce, $12M to David Wright, who is probably finished, and $0 to pitchers.

7) Six assistant coaches have left the Dallas Cowboys? staff since the season ended.

6) Georgia QB Jacob Eason is transferring to Washington; he?ll sit next season, then have couple years of eligibility left. Eason sprained his knee in the Dawgs? opener this season; freshman Jake Fromm replaced him and led Georgia to the national title game.

I wonder if Jacob Eason ever heard of Wally Pipp?

5) Think about Bruce Arians? coaching career; he was an assistant at Alabama for Bear Bryant?s last season coaching, and he was Peyton Manning?s first QB coach. What a career? now he is hoping to move into television next season, and for my sake, I hope he does. Arians tells the truth and he?ll be great on TV? we?ll be able to learn a lot from him.

4) In 1972-73, the Virginia Squires of the ABA went 42-42 under coach Al Bianchi; this team was one of the great announcer?s nightmares of all-time. They had these three players:

Julius Erving. George Gervin. George Irvine. Three similar sounding last names.

Dr J and the Iceman went on to be two of the greatest scorers ever; Irvine went on to coach the Indiana Pacers, but what a tongue-twister that had to be when the Squires had the ball.

3) Blue Jays signed Josh Donaldson for one year at $23M; he is a free agent next winter, but is 32 and missed 49 games last year with injuries.

2) Utah Jazz? Rodney Hood got fined $35,000 by the NBA for slapping a cellphone out of a fan?s hand as he left the court in Washington after getting ejected from a game.

He should have to buy the fan a new IPhoneX, even if he didn?t break the first phone. Grow up.

1) ESPN had an interesting stat last night; from 2012-14, the Power 5 leagues and Big East got 70.9% of at-large bids to the NCAA tournament.

Last three years, those six leagues got 84.3% of at-large bids. The mid-majors are slowly being squeezed out of the at-large process, in part due to how the big boys schedule and now with the big leagues going to bigger conference schedules, which will jack up their RPIs.
