Athanasiou scores 6 seconds into OT, Red Wings top Sens
January 3, 2018

DETROIT (AP) Andreas Athanasiou scored 6 seconds into overtime to give the Detroit Red Wings a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night.

It was the second goal of the night for Athanasiou, who also had a penalty shot stopped in the third period. Dylan Larkin took the opening faceoff in overtime and, after the puck went forward a bit, both Athanasiou and Ottawa standout Erik Karlsson reached for it.

Athanasiou was able to control it and skated in behind Karlsson on a breakaway. He beat goalie Craig Anderson with a backhander high to the glove side.

The goal tied an NHL record for fastest overtime goal in the regular season. The most recent player to score 6 seconds into overtime was Washington's Alex Ovechkin on Dec. 15, 2006, at Atlanta.

Ryan Dzingel scored for the Senators.

Detroit has won three in a row for the first time this season. The Red Wings improved to 1-6 in games decided in overtime, although they have won three shootouts. Ottawa lost for the 18th time in 22 games.

BLACKHAWKS 5, RANGERS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Patrick Sharp broke a tie early in the third period and Chicago beat New York.

Nick Schmaltz, Vinnie Hinostroza, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane also scored, and Jeff Glass made 23 saves. The 32-year-old Glass made his third straight start with Corey Crawford on injured reserved.

Sharp scored at 2:24 of the third when his wrist shot sailed past goalie Henrik Lundqvist's glove. Toews and Kane had empty-net goals in the final minute.

Nick Holden and Mika Zibanejad scored for New York.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

? Tulsa 90, UConn 88 2OT? Huskies are 7-7; natives must be restless.

? Drake 87, Illinois State 62? Experienced Bulldogs are 3-0 in the Valley.

? Kentucky 74, LSU 71? Wildcats won first two SEC games by total of 8 points.

? Georgia Tech 64, Miami 54? Hurricanes? travel schedule caught up wth them.

? South Dakota State 87, North Dakota State 80? Solid road win for the Jackrabbits.

? Three of seven games in the Atlantic 14 last night went to overtime.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud?..

13) Marquette 95, Providence 90 OT? People are going nuts about Oklahoma freshman Trae Young- he is really, really good, but Marquette sophomore Markus Howard is really good too, and he?s six months younger than Young, having given up his senior year of high school to enroll in college a year early.

Howard scored 52 points for Marquette last nite in this win at Providence; he was 11-19 on the arc, and is 45-45 on the foul line this season.

12) ESPN apparently wants to hire Alex Rodriguez for Sunday Night Baseball, but A-Rod wants to dictate who the play-by-play guy will be, which is holding up his signing with ESPN.

11) 37 of the top country?s 50 TV broadcasts in 2017 (74%) were NFL games, so maybe ratings for NFL games have gone down, but they?ve gone down less than everything else on TV.

10) Quote of the Day, Part 2:

?I?m tired of being quiet. I?m sick of watching people bash my child but if he suited up tomorrow he?d be the next coming of Jesus Christ to you guys. Enough is enough. Be a fan, be supportive, be empathetic or just be quiet until the NCAA does what they have to do.?

Nicole Player, whose son is Billy Preston, a Kansas recruit who is ineligible for now because of questions about a car he was driving when he got into an accident

9) Green Bay Packers? coach Mike McCarthy will be squarely on hot seat next year, seeing as the team has gotten ridden of lot of other people since their season ended Sunday.

Packers ?re-assigned? (fired) their GM, fired both coordinators and their QB coach. When Aaron Rodgers gets hurt, people get fired.

8) Nick Saban is 11-0 when coaching against a former assistant, with all the wins by 14+ points; Monday night is his first game against former assistant, Georgia coach Kirby Smart.

Of the other 13 teams in the SEC, five are coached by former Saban assistants.

7) The 12 NHL regular season games with the all-time best TV ratings were all outdoor games.

6) In the CFL, Hamilton Tiger-Cats traded QB Zach Collaros to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, which clears the way for the Ti-Cats to sign Johnny Manziel, which should be interesting.

5) April 17 will be the 50th anniversary of the A?s first game in Oakland; they?re giving away all 50,000 seats that night, for the A?s-White Sox game.

4) QB?s Sam Darnold/Josh Rosen both declared for the NFL Draft Wednesday; if the Raiders hire Jon Gruden, ESPN needs to find another QB guru to ?interview? these QB prospects before the draft, the way Gruden did the last few years? it was his best TV work.

3) Florida State 81, North Carolina 80? Seminoles snapped a 7-game skid against UNC; they were up 11 at the half, hung on for the win.

2) Oklahoma 109, Oklahoma State 89? Sooners made 15-27 on the arc; Lon Kruger coached in the NBA and he has an NBA-level talent in freshman guard Young.

1) LSU?s defensive coordinator Dave Aranda is staying in Baton Rouge; he?ll be making $2.5M a year for the next four years. Thats $2.5M a year for an assistant football coach. Wow.

STREAKY TEAMS

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Edmonton 0-4 past four games overall Carolina Under 11-5-1 past 17 games overall
Montreal 0-5 past five games overall St. Louis Under 11-1 past 12 games overall
Vegas 12-1 past 13 games overall Vancouver Over 9-2 past 11 games overall

Working Overtime

The Los Angeles Kings have posted a 12-3-3 record over the past 18 outings, going to overtime in six of those outings with one game decided in a shootout. Their record is 3-3 in overtime, with a 1-0 mark in the shootout during the span. Overall they're 5-5 in 10 games in overtime, while going 2-0 in the shootout this season. Six of their past 11 games have been decided by one goal, too.

Golden Goose

The Vegas Golden Knights certainly do not walk, talk or act like an expansion team. In fact, they have ascended the odds sheet to be among the favorite to win the Stanley Cup. That's pretty amazing, but they've won eight in a row after their 3-0 shutout against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday, and they're a ridiculous 12-1 over their past 13 games overall. They have 56 points to lead the Pacific Division by three points, and they're second in the NHL in point behind only the Tampa Bay Lightning (60 points). Could we be seeing a Stanley Cup Finals preview on Jan. 18 when the Lightning and Golden Knights meet in Tampa? I know, it felt ridiculous typing it, too, but it's certainly possible.

Looking Ahead

Thursday, January 4

The Hurricanes and Penguins do battle in the Steel City, and Pittsburgh will be looking for revenge after losing 2-1 on Dec. 29 in Raleigh. The Hurricanes slipped up Tuesday night against the Capitals in a 5-4 overtime loss, but they have earned points in eight of their past 10 outings. The Penguins slapped the brakes on a two-game road slide with a win at Philadelphia, 5-1. The offense finally broke out of its slump with the five goals after averaging 2.0 goals per game over their past nine outings. Despite their win on Friday, Carolina is still just 1-7 over the past eight tries against Pittsburgh. They're 0-4 in their past four trips to Western Pennsylvania.

The Kings roll into Calgary trying to extinguish the Flames. Los Angeles is 7-1 in their past eight games on one day of rest, and they're 11-2 in their past 13 road games against a team with a losing home record. They're also 20-8 in their past 28 games against teams with a losing overall record. On the flip side, the Flames are 2-6 in their past eight against teams with a winning overall mark. The good news for Calgary is that they're 4-1 in the past five meetings with L.A. The 'under' is an impressive 11-4-3 in the past 18 meetings between these two in Calgary, while going 22-8-4 in the past 34 meetings overall.

Friday, January 5

The Red Wings host the Panthers at Little Caesars Arena in the third meeting between these two sides. If the first two battles are any indication, this will go down to the wire. Detroit won 3-2 in a shootout in Sunrise in the first meeting on Oct. 28, and the Panthers returned the favor with a 2-1 win in overtime in Motown on Dec.11. In fact, each of the past four meetings in this series have been decided by one goal, with the road team going a perfect 4-0 during the stretch. Three of the meetings have been decided in overtime or a shootout, too.

Saturday, January 6

The Stars host the Oilers in the Metroplex in matinee action on Saturday afternoon. This will be the third meeting of the season, with Dallas winning 6-3 at home on Nov. 18, and Edmonton will at home by a 5-4 count on Oct. 26. The common denominator is that the 'over' hit in each matchup. The over is 7-3 in the past 10 games for Dallas. The Oilers, meanwhile, have been blanked 5-0 in back-to-back games entering the week, so perhaps an offensive explosion is coming since they're due. They're averaging just 1.0 goals per game on the current homestand, but they averaged 5.0 goals per game in the previous homestand on Dec. 18-23.

The Kings host the Predators at Staples Center in late-night action on Saturday. The Predators won 4-3 in overtime in the first meeting in L.A. back on Nov. 4, as Juuse Saros outlasted Darcy Kuemper. Look for Jonathan Quick to face the Preds this time around, however. He has been red hot lately, blanking the Oilers on Tuesday. Last season the Kings swept the three regular-season meetings against the Predators, with the 'under' going 2-0-1. The 'under' is 5-1 over the past six games for Los Angeles entering play on Wednesday, while the 'under' is 6-3 in the past nine for the Predators after their 3-0 loss Tuesday in Vegas.

Blues beat Golden Knights 2-1
January 4, 2018

ST. LOUIS (AP) Paul Stastny broke a third-period tie with his eighth goal of the season, Carter Hutton continued his strong play in goal and the St. Louis Blues beat the Vegas Golden Knights 2-1 on Thursday night.

Alexander Steen also scored for the Blues, who won their third straight. Hutton made 32 saves, including two tough stops early in the third while the game was tied.

Hutton, making his third consecutive start, earned his eighth win of the season and is 12-3 in his last 15 starts.

Erik Haula scored for Vegas, which had its NHL expansion record eight-game winning streak snapped. Marc-Andre Fleury made 37 saves but lost for the first time in six starts.

CANADIENS 2, LIGHTNING 1, SO

MONTREAL (AP) - Carey Price made 44 saves, Paul Byron scored the only goal in a shootout and Montreal ended a five-game losing streak with a victory over Tampa Bay.

Max Pacioretty scored in regulation for the Canadiens in their first victory since Dec. 22.

Nikita Kucherov scored his 26th goal for the Lightning.

Pacioretty opened the scoring at 20 seconds of the second period, ending his 13-game goal drought that dated to Nov. 30. Andrei Vasilevskiy, coming off two straight shutouts, saw his scoreless streak end at 184 minutes, 49 seconds.

HURRICANES 4, PENGUINS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sebastian Aho scored twice, Cam Ward stopped 21 shots and Carolina blanked Pittsburgh.

The Hurricanes also beat the Penguins 2-1 last Friday in Carolina. Aho got the winning goal in the first matchup, and this time he iced the two-time defending Stanely Cup champions after Jeff Skinner and Teuvo Teravainen scored. Aho assisted on Teravainen's goal and has 10 points during a six-game point streak.

Ward got his first shutout of the season and 26th of his career. He has wins in 10 of his last 13 games and has earned Carolina a point in eight straight.

The Penguins have dropped eight of their past 12 and haven't won back-to-back games since Dec. 1-2. Matt Murray had 29 saves.

MAPLE LEAFS 3, SHARKS 2, SO

TORONTO (AP) - Auston Matthews and Tyler Bozak scored in a shootout to give Toronto a victory over San Jose in a game that opened with a fight that saw the Maple Leafs' Nazem Kadri rip out part of Joe Thornton's mountain-man beard.

Toronto killed off Mitch Marner's high-sticking penalty that gave the Sharks a 4-on-3 skating advantage for the final 1:50 of overtime.

Kevin Labanc was the lone successful San Jose shooter in six tries against Frederik Andersen in the tiebreaker. Former Shark Patrick Marleau hit the post on his attempt.

Matthews and Kadri scored in regulation for Toronto, and Brenden Dillon and Chris Tierney countered for San Jose.

Toronto snapped a three-game losing streak and a 10-game slide (0-8-2) against the Sharks.

Thornton and Kadri dropped the gloves just two seconds in after slashing each other at the opening faceoff.

FLYERS 6, ISLANDERS 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ivan Provorov had two goals and an assist, and Sean Couturier had a goal, an assist and participated in one of several fights for Philadelphia in a feisty victory over slumping New York.

Travis Konecny energized his teammates with a first-period scrap, then scored to cap a four-goal second. Wayne Simmonds and Michael Raffl also scored for the Flyers, who overcame a poor third period for their second win in six games.

Brian Elliott made 27 saves in his 15th straight start, two nights after an ugly loss to Pittsburgh.

Cal Clutterbuck scored twice, and John Tavares and Ryan Pulock added third-period goals for the Islanders in their season-high fourth straight loss. Thomas Greiss allowed five goals on 31 shots but got little help from a defense that continues to struggle without injured Johnny Boychuk.

WILD 6, SABRES 2

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Nino Niederreiter had a hat trick in his return from injury, Mikko Koivu contributed a goal and two assists, and the finally fully healthy Minnesota Wild beat Buffalo.

Niederreiter, who missed the previous five games because of a lower leg injury, needed less than 25 minutes of game time to get the second hat trick of his seven-year career. His parents were even in attendance from his native Switzerland.

Niederreiter scored just 69 seconds in, snapping a behind-the-net pass from Mikael Granlund beneath the pads of Sabres goalie Robin Lehner. Granlund had three assists.

Devan Dubnyk took a shutout into the third period for the Wild, until Sam Reinhart scored early and Evander Kane got a goal late. Dubnyk is 11-2-1 in his last 15 starts since Nov. 9.

Daniel Winnik and Charlie Coyle also scored for the Wild, who improved to 11-1-1 in their last 13 home games.

STARS 4, DEVILS 3

DALLAS (AP) - Tyler Seguin scored his team-leading 20th goal short-handed, Alexander Radulov had a goal and two assists and Dallas beat New Jersey.

Brett Ritchie had the tiebreaking goal on a power play after a second straight penalty against Sami Vatanen, and the Devils matched their season high with a fourth straight loss. The skid follows a season-best five-game winning streak that started with a win at home over the Stars.

Radulov's 15th goal got Dallas even early in the second period, and Ben Bishop stopped 39 shots for his fifth win in a season-high ninth straight start.

Taylor Hall had a goal and two assists for the Devils, who scored in the final minute of each of the first two periods, starting with Brian Boyle on a power play with 14 seconds left in the first.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Super Bowl exacta odds: winner listed first

6-1? Patriots over Vikimgs

15-2? Vikings over Patriots

8-1? Vikings over Steelers

11-1? Patriots over Eagles, Patriots over Rams, Patriots over Saints

12-1? Steelers over Vikings

14-1? Saints over Patriots

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) Carson Palmer retired this week; he earned $174,148,722 in his NFL career, which means he can do whatever he wants the rest of his life, but lot of athletes have trouble finding something to do that is as stimulating/interesting as playing ball.

Former Phillies star Mike Schmidt talked about that after he retired, how he has struggled to find something that motivates him like baseball did. Schmidt does Phillies games on TV on the weekends; he tried managing in the minor leagues, but that didn?t last long.

12) This would be an interesting TV series; looking up retired athletes and seeing what they?re doing now. Anfernee Hardaway is an interesting person to look at? he coaches high school basketball in Memphis now, and has a really good team. Hardaway earned over $120M in his playing career.

11) TV ratings for the college football bowl games were up 7% from last year; yes, there are too many bowls, but yes, people are watching them.

10) Snowy day here today at Armadillo World HQ; it is a windy, snowy mess here, but was also a solid day of movies on TV. Bull Durham, Blue Chips, The Bodyguard, plus I found a Without a Trace marathon. Better than braving the elements outside on a cruddy winter day.

9) Kevin Durant donated $3M to the University of Texas to support the basketball program and the Center for Sports Leadership and Innovation. Durant only played one season at Texas, before heading on to the NBA.

8) RIP Rob Picciolo 64, who passed away this week. Picciolo played nine years in the majors, six of them for the A?s? he was a solid fielder who today would be a super-utility guy. He had been coaching in the major leagues, with the Angels and Padres.

7) Central Florida went 13-0 this year, joining this list of smaller-budget football programs that had an unbeaten season. Here is how the other four teams did the following season:

Utah, 2005? 7-5, won Emerald Bowl 38-10
Boise State, 2007? 10-3, lost Hawai?i Bowl 41-38
Utah, 2009? 10-3, won Poinsettia Bowl 24-13
TCU, 2011? 11-2, won Poinsettia Bowl 31-24

6) Lot of college basketball teams have almost no depth; Syracuse lost 73-67 at Wake Forest on Wednesday; they played two guys the whole 40:00, two others 37:00. Their subs played a total of only fifteen minutes.

5) Sign of the Times: In Tulsa?s 90-88 double OT win over UConn Wednesday, Golden Hurricane made 17-41 3-pointers, 25-36 on foul line, but only 7-23 inside the arc. Shooting has become a huge skill, since teams that don?t have much depth play more zone.

4) Guy named Briceton Branch won around $1.3M when he won this year?s Westgate SuperContest, where you pony up $1,500, then pick five NFL games a week against the spread. More than 2,700 handicappers were involved this season, the biggest one they?ve had.

3) Football coaches are gypsies; Giants? offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan is the new QB coach in Denver. Rumors on the Interweb Thursday had the Broncos more interested in acquiring Kirk Cousins than Eli Manning- they?re desperate to upgrade their QB play from the last two years.

2) There are rumblings that Donald Trump is going to the Alabama-Georgia game Monday nite, raising the possibility that player(s) on either team might take a knee during national anthem; seeing how there will be roughly 200 players on the sidelines, what are the odds that we get thru the night without some politically-inspired drama?

1) Warm thought of the day: Dodgers? spring training tickets go on sale Friday morning; tickets are $3 cheaper if you buy them in advance, as opposed to buying them the day of the game.

Golden Knights edge Blackhawks 5-4 for 9th win in 10 games
January 5, 2018

CHICAGO (AP) Reilly Smith had a goal and two assists, and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 on Friday night for their ninth win in 10 games.

Jonathan Marchessault and William Karlsson each had a goal and an assist as expansion Vegas won in its first trip to Chicago. Alex Tuch and Cody Eakin also scored, and Malcolm Subban made 28 saves.

The game was tied at 4 when Smith stole a pass and beat Jeff Glass on a breakaway for his 11th of the season 13:53 into the third.

Vinnie Hinostroza had a goal and two assists for Chicago, which was coming off a 2-3-1 trip. Jonathan Toews had a goal and an assist, and Glass finished with 38 stops. Patrick Sharp and Nick Schmaltz also scored for the Blackhawks.

PENGUINS 4, ISLANDERS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Sidney Crosby had a goal and three assists, Tristan Jarry stopped 31 shots for his second shutout of the season and Pittsburgh beat New York.

Daniel Sprong had two goals and an assist, Evgeni Malkin also scored and Dominik Simon added two assists for the Penguins, who had dropped four of six and were coming off a 4-0 loss at home to Carolina the previous night. The two-time defending Stanley Cup champions pulled within one point of the Hurricanes for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.

Jaroslav Halak finished with 31 saves as the Islanders lost their season-high fifth straight - all in regulation - while getting outscored 25-8 during the skid.

The Islanders lost right wing Josh Bailey to a lower-body injury early in the first period and he did not return. Bailey leads the team with 38 assists and is tied with captain John Tavares for tops with 50 points.

RED WINGS 4, PANTHERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Anthony Mantha and Gustav Nyquist scored in the third period to lift Detroit over Florida for its fourth straight victory.

The Red Wings blew a 2-0 lead and had been outplayed for most of the night, but Mantha gave Detroit the lead back on the power play, and Nyquist added a breakaway goal with 4:38 remaining.

Andreas Athanasiou and Tomas Tatar also scored for the Red Wings. Mike Matheson and Aleksander Barkov scored for the Panthers, who had their game at Boston on Thursday night postponed because of severe weather. They were able to make it from there to Detroit to play Friday's game as scheduled.

JETS 4, SABRES 3

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Blake Wheeler and Jacob Trouba each had a goal and an assist as Winnipeg topped Buffalo, extending its point streak to five games.

Wheeler has a point in five straight games, with five goals and three assists during that span. All five of those goals have been scored in the four games the right wing has played at center in place of injured Mark Scheifele.

The Jets are 4-0-1 in their last five and 24-11-7 overall, good for first place in the Central Division - one point ahead of idle St. Louis.

Winnipeg defenseman Dustin Byfuglien scored his first goal of the season in his 30th game. It was his second game back after missing 10 with a lower-body injury.

Bryan Little also scored for the Jets, who are 15-3-1 at home. Connor Hellebuyck made 26 saves and improved to 22-4-6.

Marco Scandella, Scott Wilson and Johan Larsson scored for the struggling Sabres.

SENATORS 6, SHARKS 5, OT

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Matt Duchene scored his second goal of the game seven seconds into overtime and Ottawa capped a four-goal comeback with a win over San Jose.

Down 5-2 to start the third period, the Senators got goals from Derick Brassard, Duchene and Mike Hoffman. Ryan Dzingel and Mark Stone also scored for Ottawa, and Craig Anderson made 30 saves.

Hoffman and Duchene raced for a 2-on-1 off the OT faceoff, and Hoffman slipped a backhand pass across the slot to Duchene, who pushed the puck past goalie Aaron Dell.

Tomas Hertl led the Sharks with two goals. Melker Karlsson, Chris Tierney and Brett Burns also scored. Dell stopped 37 shots.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Longshot Super Bowl exacta odds: winner listed first

1,250-1? Titans over Panthers

1,000-1? Falcons over Titans, Falcons over Bills

800-1? Bills over Falcons

600-1? Eagles over Titans, Eagles over Bills

500-1? Rams over Titans, Rams over Bills

250-1? Jaguars over Panthers

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??

13) Did some research today: as far as NFL teams meeting for third time in season in playoffs; in Super Bowl era, the home team is 34-25 in the third meeting. Teams that swept first 2 meetings are 11-5 in third meeting.

Carolina lost to the Saints twice this year, so they fit this scenario Sunday.

12) Jon Gruden is going to get a 10-year, $100M contract to coach the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, which seems excessive, but now ESPN needs to come up with someone to replace Gruden interviewing college QB prospects before the NFL Draft, because that was some of their best programming.

College basketball notes from last few days:
11) Western Kentucky?s 4-star recruit Josh Anderson became eligible this week, and will play at Marshall Saturday. Anderson is an athletic defender at guard who gives the Hilltoppers needed depth- they used seven players in their last three games.

10) North Texas won two of its first three games in C-USA; the three games were decided by total of four points.

9) Stanford 107, UCLA 99 2OT? Bruins went 19-35 on foul line in this double OT game, a game Bruins led by 13 with 9:31 to play. Six players fouled out of this game, three on each side.

8) Over last seven years, Big West has put seven different teams into the NCAA tournament; in these one-bid leagues, all that really matters in the conference tournament in March, not sure if thats a good thing, but it is what it is.

7) Best college basketball studio show is on FS1, with Steve Lavin/Jim Jackson analyzing games and Rob Stone. Good banter where you can learn stuff, and laugh at same time.

6) Mike Dunleavy Sr has coached 1,329 NBA games; quite a coup for Tulane to hire him as their basketball coach. Green Wave was 33-63 the last three years, 6-25 in Dunleavy?s first season last year, but they?re 11-4 this year, and 2-1 in the AAC with wins over Temple/SMU.

Big improvement for Tulane, who last finished over .500 in conference 11 years ago.

5) Cal Poly 80, Cal-Santa Barbara 79 OT? Gauchos led this game 23-2 on road Thursday nite, but let it slip away down the stretch. Not too many teams that are down 21 come back to win.

4) Colorado 90, Arizona State 81 OT? Sun Devils were unbeaten, ranked #4 in country, but now they?re 0-2 in Pac-12, after losing to Arizona/Colorado. ASU was 9-33 on arc in this game, was +7 in turnovers. Conference play is tough, much more competitive.

3) UNLV 82, San Jose State 76 OT? UNLV coaches dodged a bullet here; down a point with 0:16 left, Rebels called timeout, but star player McCoy didn?t check in quick enough during the timeout, so he had to stay on the bench, and since UNLV was out of timeouts, they played the most important possession of the game without their best player. No bueno.

UNLV tied the game, McCoy came back in and played the OT, and the Rebels survived to win a game that would?ve been a hideous loss. San Jose State is rebuilding- there was almost no one there? there had been a power outage on campus during the day. UNLV did its walk-thru in a mostly dark gym? seriously. TV announcer Drew Goodman filmed part of it with his phone.

2) Tennessee State 67, Jacksonville State 60? Gamecocks were 0-3 on foul line for the game; you don?t see that a lot- they were 10-24 on the arc. Tennessee State was 15-15 on the line; they shot 61% inside the arc. JSU may have been looking ahead to its game with Belmont Saturday.

1) Texas A&M scored 61.5 ppg in losing its first two SEC games, after an 11-1 start to their season, but think they get leading scorer Hogg back from suspension for their home game with LSU today. Hogg was 5th (and hopefully last) Aggie to be suspended this season- they just got couple guys back from knee injuries- they?re very good if they can just get back to full strength.
