NHL roundup: Caps beat Bruins for 12th straight time
December 28, 2017

LOS ANGELES -- David Perron scored the winning goal at 3:30 of overtime as the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 on Thursday for their sixth consecutive win.

Vegas extended its point streak to 11 games (10-0-1), the longest of any team in its inaugural season. It is the first time in NHL history that an expansion team has won six games in a row.

Jonathan Marchessault and Brendan Leipsic registered the other Vegas goals. Marc-Andre Fleury made 26 saves.

Los Angeles lost its second straight game and has dropped five of its past seven. Marian Gaborik and Drew Doughty registered goals, and Jonathan Quick made 36 saves.

Capitals 4, Bruins 3 (SO)

WASHINGTON -- Alex Ovechkin scored the only goal of the shootout, and Washington earned its 12th consecutive victory over Boston.

Ovechkin, the Capitals' third shooter, made a move to his right and fired high over Bruins goaltender Anton Khudobin, off the post and in. Boston had won five straight while Washington snapped a three-game slide after overcoming a 2-0 deficit.

David Backes' second goal of the night gave the Bruins a 3-2 lead at 7:19 of the third period, but the Capitals tied it on Brett Connolly's eighth goal of the season during a scramble in front with 8:38 remaining. Backes and Noel Acciari scored early in the first period.

Lightning 3, Canadiens 1

TAMPA, Fla. -- Red-hot Tampa Bay tied the game with 12 seconds left in the second period and jumped ahead 30 seconds into the third to defeat Montreal.

The Lightning's top two scorers combined on a highlight-reel goal -- Nikita Kucherov outskated a Canadiens defender to a loose puck and flicked a no-look backward pass to a charging Steven Stamkos, who beat Carey Price for the tying goal.

Tampa Bay, which is 10-0-1 in its past 11, took the momentum from that score into the third, when Brayden Point poked in a loose puck in front of the net for his 15th goal and a 2-1 lead with 19:30 left.

Maple Leafs 7, Coyotes 4

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Patrick Marleau scored twice as Toronto defeated Arizona.

Mitch Marner recorded a goal and two assists, William Nylander had a goal and an assist, and Auston Matthews, Zach Hyman and Connor Brown also scored for the Maple Leafs. Marleau finished with a three-point night.

Jordan Martinook had a goal and an assist, and Josh Archibald, Brendan Perlini and Christian Fischer also scored for the Coyotes, who fell to a league-worst 9-26-5. Arizona has lost two of three, giving up at least six goals in each of the defeats.

Panthers 3, Flyers 2

SUNRISE, Fla. -- James Reimer came within eight minutes of his second consecutive shutout as Florida won its fourth straight game.

Reimer, who made 29 saves in his 10th straight start in place of injured starter Roberto Luongo, has allowed just seven goals in his past four appearances. In a span covering parts of three games, Reimer went 121:54 without allowing a goal.

Jared McCann, Derek MacKenzie and Jonathan Huberdeau scored for the Panthers, and Nick Bjugstad picked up two assists. Huberdeau has 13 goals, one shy of Vincent Trocheck for the team lead.

Sharks 3, Flames 2 (SO)

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Joe Pavelski and Joonas Donskoi scored the only goals in a shootout, lifting San Jose past Calgary for the Sharks' third consecutive win.

Pavelski and Timo Meier scored for the Sharks in regulation, and Martin Jones made 32 saves. Jones stopped all three shots he faced in the shootout.

Garnet Hathaway and Mikael Backlund scored for the Flames. Backup goaltender David Rittich made 30 saves.

Canucks 5, Blackhawks 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Thomas Vanek scored two goals and added three assists, and Sam Gagner added two goals and an assist as Vancouver beat Chicago.

Gagner extended his point streak to four games after producing points in only five of the previous 15 contests. His linemate, Brock Boeser, had a goal and three assists to take the NHL rookie points lead (38) from Mathew Barzal of the New York Islanders.

The Canucks ended a four-game losing streak. The Blackhawks took their third loss in a row. Nick Schmaltz and Ryan Hartman, with only 8.6 seconds left in the game, scored for Chicago.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Maple Leafs headed to Las Vegas for NYE
Monty Andrews

The Senators are trying desperately to figure out what has gone wrong this season, a Saturday showdown for the top of the Metropolitan division, and the Maple Leafs get set to take on the Knights on New Year's Eve in Sin City.

Senators Seeking a Solution

The Ottawa Senators have all but played their way out of playoff contention - at least in oddsmakers' eyes - as they prepare for a pair of home games before the calendar flips to 2018. Ottawa's 5-1 thumping at the hands of the Boston Bruins on Wednesday has the team sitting second-last in the Eastern Conference, just four points clear of the Buffalo Sabres. They're a whopping +7,500 on Bet365 to win the division, and have seen their Stanley Cup odds slip to a miraculous +10,000. They'll host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday before closing out 2017 against the Bruins the following night.

Metropolitan Showdown

The Metropolitan Division remains the most competitive in the league - which makes Saturday's showdown between the New Jersey Devils and the host Washington Capitals the top game on the schedule. The Devils own a two-point lead over the Capitals atop the division by virtue of a five-game winning streak entering Thursday. The Capitals previously held the division lead but have dropped three in a row heading into Thursday's play. Washington has a significant upper hand in the recent head-to-head series, having won the last four meetings while outscoring the Devils by a 17-6 margin over that stretch.

Happy New Year!

Imagine being the opposing team that has to deal with playing a New Year's Eve game in Las Vegas. The Toronto Maple Leafs are the lucky winners this season as they'll face the red-hot Golden Knights in a Sunday matinee at T-Mobile Arena. In addition to having to navigate through the crowds of people on Las Vegas Boulevard, the Maple Leafs will also be up against a Golden Knights team that has just two regulation losses through its first 18 home games. Vegas suddenly finds itself with the seventh-best championship odds (+1,500) - though the Maple Leafs are one of the six teams presently ahead of them (+1,000).

Injury Updates

* The Chicago Blackhawks head through Western Canada without starting netminder Corey Crawford, who has been placed on IR with an upper-body injury. It's a major blow for the Blackhawks, who are 16-9-2 SU and 10-15-3 O/U in his 28 starts.

* The Columbus Blue Jackets have had to do without the services of defenseman Zach Werenski, who has missed the last four games with an undisclosed ailment. But Columbus hasn't suffered in his absence, going 2-0-2 in that stretch.

* Jay Bouwmeester is back skating, but there is no timetable for the St. Louis Blues defenseman's return. The Blues are 2-6-0 since Bouwmeester went down - though that has more to do with having scored a paltry 10 goals over that span.

Player News

* Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin is heating up with four goals in his last five games, and had three points in Wednesday's 5-4 shootout win over Columbus. The Penguins are 6-0-1 SU and 5-1-1 O/U when Malkin records a multi-point game.

* The Islanders forward tandem of John Tavares and Josh Bailey continues to take the league by storm, sharing the December scoring lead with 20 points each. it's no surprise, then, that New York has been one of the month's best over plays at 10-3 O/U.

* Dallas Stars defenseman John Klingberg will likely go into the new year as the top-scoring blue-liner in the league; he currently has a four-point edge over three others. His offense has helped the Stars build a 21-16-1 O/U record entering Thursday's play.

Stanley Cup Futures

* The Bruins have undergone an incredible turnaround, and find themselves among the Stanley Cup favorites heading into 2018. Boston enters Thursday at +1,300 on Sports Interaction to win the NHL championship, the fourth-best odds in the league.

* The Islanders have seen their odds of claiming their first NHL championship since 1983 climb to +1,600 as of Thursday. The Isles boast the NHL's No. 2 offense at 3.5 goals per game, but are allowing 3.5 goals per contest to rank last in the league.

Over/Under Trends

* The Blues are the hottest under play in the league at the moment, going below the total in nine consecutive games heading into a Friday night encounter with the Dallas Stars. St. Louis is now 15-24-0 O/U for the season.

* The Tampa Bay Lightning have emerged as a strong over option thanks to a league-best 4.20 goals per game this month. The Lightning have exceeded the total in seven of their 10 December contests going into Thursday's showdown with Montreal.

NHL roundup: Blackhawks win in 32-year-old goalie's first start
December 30, 2017

EDMONTON, Alberta -- It was 2 a.m. Friday when Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville informed 32-year-old goaltender Jeff Glass that his NHL dream would finally be coming true.

After the Blackhawks lost in Vancouver on Thursday, Quenneville decided that Glass would be getting his first NHL start Friday in Edmonton.

Glass is from Calgary, less than three hours down the highway. So in the middle of the night, the calls went out to family and friends. They made the trek to Edmonton to be at Rogers Place on Friday night to witness a Hollywood script unfolding in front of their eyes.

Glass made his NHL debut more than 13 years after he was drafted by Ottawa. He made 42 saves, leading the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

Patrick Kane scored the winner 50 seconds into overtime.

Glass wasn't the only Hawk to enjoy a first. Jordan Oesterle, a former Oiler, scored his first career NHL goal.

Wild 4, Predators 2

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Mikael Granlund registered his second career hat trick and Devan Dubnyk made 41 saves in his first start since Nov. 14 to lead the Minnesota Wild past Nashville in the first game of a back-to-back, home-and-home series between the two clubs.

Mikael Granlund registered his second career hat trick and Devan Dubnyk made 41 saves in his first start since Nov. 14 to lead Minnesota to a 4-2 win over Nashville on Friday night.

Matt Dumba's second-period goal stood up as the game-winner and the Wild defenseman added an assist as Minnesota won its second straight coming out of the Christmas break.

P.K. Subban and Kyle Turris scored for the Predators (22-10-5) but goaltender Pekka Rinne was Nashville's best player, making 34 saves in a game with a combined 81 shots on goal.

Flyers 5, Lightning 3

TAMPA -- Philadelphia pulled the upset by taking advantage of facing backup Tampa Bay goalie Peter Budaj .

Philadelphia took the lead in the final minute of the second period, then got a wraparound goal from Brandon Manning in the third for a cushion. Tampa Bay (27-8-2) took just its second loss of December after enjoying a 10-1-0 stretch coming in, along with eight straight wins at home.

Budaj (3-3-1) exited with an injury with 9:34 left in the game.

Sabres 4, Devils 3 (OT)

NEWARK, N.J. -- Buffalo rallied from a two-goal deficit on two Jack Eichel goals, and then won it 2:37 into overtime on Rasmus Ristolainen's first goal since April 5.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Devils (22-9-6), who were attempting to sweep a six-game homestand for the first time in franchise history. Despite the overtime defeat, New Jersey secured at least one point in the standings for the eighth consecutive game (6-0-2).

Senators 5, Blue Jackets 4

OTTAWA -- Columbus blew a two-goal lead for the second straight game.

The Senators were trailing 3-1 in the second period and scored four goals in a row to take control of the game and end a four-game losing streak.

Mark Stone and Bobby Ryan scored nearly two minutes apart in the third to give the Senators a 5-3 lead with 10:39 remaining.

Ducks 2, Flames 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Rickard Rakell scored the decisive third-period power-play goal as Anaheim won for the third time in its last four contests.

Cam Fowler registered the other Ducks goal, and goaltender John Gibson made 22 saves.

Calgary (18-16-4) lost its third straight game and has lost six of its last eight contests. Michael Ferland scored the lone Flames goal.

Avalanche 4, Maple Leafs 3 (OT)

DENVER -- J.T. Compher's goal 3:25 into overtime gave Colorado the win.

Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and two assists for the Avalanche, and Nikita Zadorov had two assists.

The Maple Leafs are 2-1-1 on their season-long five-game road trip that ends Sunday in Las Vegas against the Golden Knights.

Stars 4, Blues 2

DALLAS -- Alexander Radulov scored two goals, including the game-winner with 2:21 remaining, and Ben Bishop stopped 35 of 37 shots for Dallas.

On the go-ahead goal, Radulov beat Jake Allen, who stopped 25 of 28 shots, on a wrist shot from the right circle during a power play.

Jets 4, Islanders 2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck had 42 saves -- several of which halted Islanders shooters in mid-celebration -- to record his 14th victory at home and 20th overall.

The win came two days after losing their top center, Mark Scheifele for six to eight weeks with a shoulder injury.

Blake Wheeler, Kyle Connor and Adam Lowry each had a goal and an assist for the Jets, while Shawn Matthias opened the scoring with his first of the season after being a healthy scratch for 20 of the past 21 games.

Anders Lee scored both goals for the Islanders.

Red Wings 3, Rangers 2 (SO)

DETROIT -- Frans Nielsen scored the only goal of the shootout to give Detroit a come-from-behind win.

Andreas Athanasiou and Henrik Zetterberg scored in regulation for Detroit, which snapped a three-game losing streak and has won only four of its last 17 games.

Jimmy Howard stopped 37 shots and thwarted Mats Zuccarello, Mika Zibanejad and Kevin Shattenkirk in the shootout. He also stopped defenseman Brady Skjei on a penalty shot with 2:38 left in overtime.

Hurricanes 2, Penguins 1

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Cam Ward made 27 saves and the Hurricanes won their season-high fourth game in a row.

Derek Ryan and Aho scored for the Hurricanes, who have won seven of their last eight games.

Ward allowed only defenseman Brian Dumoulin's first-period goal.

December 30, 2017

WASHINGTON -- Three defensemen scored goals as the Washington Capitals continued their dominance of the New Jersey Devils with a 5-2 victory Saturday that propelled them into first place in the Metropolitan Division.

Blueliners Christian Djoos, John Carlson and Matt Niskanen scored for Washington while Braden Holtby made 25 saves, improving to 14-3-2 versus the Devils. Tom Wilson and Nicklas Backstrom (empty-netter) also scored for the Capitals.

John Moore and Travis Zajac -- in his 800th NHL game -- scored for New Jersey, which suffered its first regulation loss since Dec. 9. Cory Schneider made 30 saves for the Devils, who fell one point behind Washington.
