Huberdeau leads Panthers past Wild 4-2
December 22, 2017

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Clayton Keller scored 4:33 into overtime, and the Arizona Coyotes rallied to beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 on Friday night.

Arizona had lost seven in a row and 10 of 11. Christian Fischer tied the game with his ninth goal of the season with 1:01 to go in regulation, and Christian Dvorak also scored for the Coyotes.

First-place Washington had won four in a row. T.J. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored for the Capitals, and Philipp Grubauer made 24 saves.

Max Domi set up Keller's game-winner, skating in from the left side and deking a defender with a swooping move toward the middle. Grubauer stopped Domi's shot, but Keller jumped on the rebound for his team-leading 13th goal.

PANTHERS 4, WILD 2

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Jonathan Huberdeau scored two goals and James Reimer made 29 saves, leading Florida to the victory.

Vincent Trocheck and Connor Brickley also scored for Florida, and Aleksander Barkov had two assists. It was the Panthers' first win over the Wild since a 2-1 victory on Jan. 3, 2016.

Minnesota dropped to 1-2 on its four-game trip. Ryan Suter and Daniel Winnik scored for the Wild, and Alex Stalock stopped 30 shots.

SABRES 4, FLYERS 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Evander Kane had a goal and an assist, and the Sabres earned their fourth win in the last 20 games.

Jack Eichel added two empty-netters, helping Buffalo hold on after Philadelphia scored twice in the final 2:10. Ryan O'Reilly also scored for the Sabres, who had dropped three in a row and five of six.

Robin Lehner stopped 33 shots. He was working on his second shutout of the season before Michael Raffl scored a power-play goal to cut Buffalo's lead to 2-1.

Shayne Gostisbehere scored for Philadelphia on a one-timer with 32 seconds left, but Eichel sealed the win by scoring with 1 second remaining.

CANADIENS 3, FLAMES 2

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Byron Froese scored for the first time in 22 months and had an assist, helping Montreal to the road win.

Nicolas Deslauriers and Brendan Gallagher also scored and Carey Price made 21 saves in his 12th straight start since returning from a lower-body injury. The Canadiens are 8-3-1 since Price returned.

Froese opened the scoring midway through the first period when he deflected Jordie Benn's point shot past Mike Smith for his first goal since Feb. 20, 2016, when he was with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Froese then assisted on Deslauriers' goal in the second.

Gallagher gave the Canadiens a 3-0 lead in the third, before the Flames made it close on goals by Micheal Ferland and Matthew Tkachuk.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) If you bet the San Francisco 49ers over/under win total for this season, your mood turned when Jimmy Garoppolo became the Niners? starting QB.

When the 49ers were 0-9, under 4.5 wins looked golden; now they?re 5-10 and under is a loser, over is a surprising winner, which is a good example of how season-long prop bets can be dicey, since Garoppolo was in Foxboro for the first half of this season.

12) If you have Showtime on your TV and are looking for some good binge-watching, Season 2 of Billions will run all day Sunday, starting at 7am. Season 1 ran all day Christmas Eve; got to see some episodes of this terrific program before and after football, which was fun.

11) In their last five games, Arizona Cardinals have held their opponents to 10-58 on third down, which is really good defense. Redbirds are only 7-8, but they?re still playing hard.

10) Speaking of the Cardinals, reports are out that Bruce Arians won?t be back as coach next year. Arians is 48-30-1 in Arizona, but is 65 and has had some health issues recently. Redbirds have an older roster (11 players are older than Sean McVay)- they?re going to miss Arians.

9) I mentioned Artis Gilmore briefly last week; the former Jacksonville center played 17 years in the NBA/ABA? he played 80+ games in 13 times, including his first eight years in ABA, where teams didn?t own their own airplanes, and teams sometimes played three nights in a row.

Gilmore averaged 18.7 ppg, 12.3 rpg in his career; he played 41+ mpg in his first four years, 37.4+ mpg in seven of his first eight years, 34.1+ mpg in his first 11 years. In other words, he wasn?t soft like some of today?s stars, who whine about every little inconvenience while making eight figure salaries.

8) If you didn?t see DeAndre Hopkins? TD catch against the Steelers Monday night, go find it on ESPN.com on YouTube? just a great catch.

7) Surprising fact: This is first time since 2010 the Steelers have a first round bye in the playoffs.

6) US Presidents are not allowed to accept gifts from foreign governments that are worth more than $390; am wondering how they came up with that amount as a limit, but thats the rule.

5) I was wondering about this so I looked it up; in NFL games this season where turnovers were even, the favorite is 27-28-2 vs spread this season. Was hoping for a more dramatic %age that would tell me something, but we don?t always get what we want.

4) Miami Dolphins have only three rushing TD?s this year; only team in last 20 years with fewer than that? The 2005 Arizona Cardinals had only two rushing TD?s all season.

3) Paxton Lynch will start at QB for the Broncos this week???I?m really not sure why, other than they want to take one more look at Lynch before the offseason. Denver has to make a move for a franchise quarterback this winter? it is hard to believe that their 2018 starter is currently on their roster, but I said the same thing about them at this time last year.

2) New England Patriots signed LB James Harrison for the rest of the season, after the Steelers surprisingly cut him last week. The 39-year old Harrison lost his starting job this season- he played a total of 40 snaps the whole season.

1) Isaiah Thomas is going to be ready to play pretty soon, which is going to change some things for the Cavaliers; Thomas was the #3 scorer in the NBA last year for Boston; he played 33.8 mpg LY, so that is 33 minutes a game that current Cavaliers are going to sit.

Cleveland is 24-10, so the guys who?ve been playing now are doing well; going to take selfless guys to accept a ?demotion? with Thomas returning, and it will take a few games for everyone to get used to playing together, with some guys taking a lot fewer shots, and even Thomas having the ball a lot less than he is used to having it.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Matthews and the Leafs take to the desert

Vegas Hits the Road

Even the most novice NHL bettor knows that the expansion Vegas Golden Knights have been a sensational home play - but the top team in the Western Conference comes out of its holiday break looking to improve its road showing with games on consecutive nights against the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings. The Golden Knights are a modest 8-7-1 away from Vegas - compared to a ridiculous 15-2-1 home mark - but have already won all three meetings with the Ducks and Kings so far this season. Vegas has moved all the way up to +1,600 on Bet365 to do the improbable and win the Stanley Cup in its first season.

Headed in Opposite Directions

The Ottawa Senators and Boston Bruins have been polar opposite teams over the same six-week stretch as they prepare to do battle Wednesday night at TD Garden. The Senators have just three victories in their previous 18 games to tumble all the way down to second-last in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, the Bruins have 13 wins over their past 17 games to vault themselves into third spot in the competitive Atlantic Division. But Ottawa might just have a psychological edge in this one, having won 10 of the past 12 meetings - including a six-game triumph in last year's Stanley Cup playoffs.

Auston Comes Home

Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews will need plenty of tickets Thursday night as he returns to his native Arizona for a showdown with the Coyotes. Matthews has led the Maple Leafs to second place in the Atlantic as they kick off a three-game road trip that finishes with a New Year's Eve encounter with Vegas. Toronto is in good position to improve its standing in the Eastern Conference, as the Coyotes come into this one with just eight victories on the season. The Coyotes come in ranked second-last in the league in both goals scored per game (2.2) and average goals allowed (3.5).

Injury Updates

* The Colorado Avalanche will be without defenseman Tyson Barrie for a while after he suffered a broken hand in his final game prior to the holiday break. The Avalanche are already struggling on the back end, ranked 24th overall in goals against per game.

* The Columbus Blue Jackets have suffered a major blow, losing forward Cam Atkinson for the next 4-to-6 weeks with a fractured right foot. The Blue Jackets are an unbelievable 10-1-0 SU in games in which Atkinson has recorded at least one point.

* Times have been tough for the St. Louis Blues since losing talented forward Jaden Schwartz to an ankle injury. The Blues have just three wins in eight games without Schwartz, and have scored just 12 total goals over that stretch.

Player News

* The scoring leader at the NHL's holiday break is Tampa Bay Lightning superstar Nikita Kucherov, whose 51 points are five more than runners-up John Tavares and Josh Bailey. Tampa leads the NHL in goals at 3.74 per game and is 21-14-0 O/U to date.

* Edmonton Oilers phenom Connor McDavid ranks outside the top 5 in league scoring, and his team could use an uptick after the break. Edmonton has won eight of its previous 10 games in which McDavid has registered at least one point.

* San Jose netminder Aaron Dell might have waited until he turned 26 to reach the NHL, but he's making the most of his chance. Dell has won each of his previous five starts, while San Jose is 4-8-1 O/U in his 13 appearances this season.

Stanley Cup Futures

* The high-scoring Lightning come out of the holiday break with the best odds to win the Stanley Cup title - and it isn't close. Tampa Bay is +525 on Bet365 entering Wednesday's action; Toronto and New Jersey are next in line at +1,000.

* Picking a winner out of the Western Conference? Might as well throw darts at this point. Four teams are listed between +1,400 and +1,600, with the Kings at the head of the pack; St. Louis and Nashville are next in line at +1,500, followed by expansion Vegas.

* You'd need to be quite brave to take the Coyotes to win the championship - but the payoff would be legendary. Arizona comes out of the holiday rest period at a whopping +400,000 on Bet365 to come from last place and win the Stanley Cup title.

Over/Under Trends

* The Sharks are well on their way to being the worst over play in hockey for the second consecutive season. San Jose has just 11 overs through its first 34 games of 2017-18, after posting just 22 overs all of last season.

* The New York Islanders continue to be a premier over play, having exceeded the total in each of their previous six games - three of which carried a total of 6. New York is 25-10-1 O/U for the year, highlighted by a 14-3-0 mark at home.

Hischier scores twice as Devils extend win streak to 5
December 27, 2017

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Top overall draft pick Nico Hischier scored two goals in the first period, and the New Jersey Devils extended their season-high winning streak to five games with a 3-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.

Taylor Hall had two assists, Cory Schneider made 31 saves and the Devils killed off all five Red Wings power plays in extending Detroit's losing streak to three games. Sami Vatanen scored into an empty net with 23 seconds to play for the final margin.

Justin Abdelkader scored for Detroit, which outshot New Jersey 25-19 in the final two periods. Jimmy Howard made 29 saves.

The two-goal game was the second of the season for the 18-year-old Swiss center and it gave him seven for the season.

RANGERS 1, CAPITALS 0, SO

NEW YORK (AP) - Mats Zuccarello and Mika Zibanejad scored in the shootout to lift New York to victory over Washington.

Ondrej Pavelec stopped all 30 shots he faced through overtime and both Washington skaters in the tiebreaker. His first shutout of the season and the 18th of his career helped the Rangers improve to 4-1-1 in their last six games.

Philipp Grubauer had 37 saves for the Capitals, who have lost three straight (0-1-2) since winning 11 of 13.

After neither team could get anything past the backup goalies through 65 minutes, Zuccarello finally put one past Grubauer on the first shootout attempt as he skated in, moved to the right and beat the Washington goalie with a backhand. Pavelec then stopped T.J. Oshie and, after Zibanejad also beat Grubauer from the right side, the Rangers' goalie denied Alex Ovechkin to secure the win.

PENGUINS 5, BLUE JACKETS 4, SO

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin scored in the shootout, and Pittsburgh rallied past Columbus.

Crosby and Malkin both beat Sergei Bobrovsky between the legs in the shootout. Matt Murray stopped Pierre-Luc Dubois and then Artemi Panarin to clinch the win.

Crosby thought he had scored the game-winner 23 seconds into overtime, but the goal was overturned because of goaltender interference by Brian Dumoulin.

Four of the last five regular-season meetings between the Penguins and Blue Jackets have gone to overtime. Pittsburgh needed a big third-period rally in this one.

Malkin and Phil Kessel both scored third-period power-play goals for Pittsburgh, while Jake Guentzel netted the equalizer with 1:40 left in regulation. Conor Sheary also scored his 10th for the Penguins, who rallied from three two-goal deficits, including two in the third period. Murray made 29 saves in regulation.

PREDATORS 2, BLUES 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Calle Jarnkrok scored his second goal in two games and Pekka Rinne made 29 saves as Nashville beat St. Louis, snapping its season-high three-game losing streak.

Craig Smith scored his 13th of the season for the Predators, who leapfrogged the Blues to take over first place in the Central Division with 49 points.

Vladimir Sobotka scored his first goal in nine games for St. Louis. Jake Allen made 24 saves, but the Blues lost for the sixth time in their last eight.

The win continued a pattern of dominance for Nashville, which topped its division rival for the sixth time in their last eight regular-season meetings. The Predators also eliminated the Blues from last season's Stanley Cup playoffs in six games in the second round.

COYOTES 3, AVALANCHE 1

DENVER (AP) - Alex Goligoski scored the go-ahead goal midway through the second period, and Arizona beat Colorado.

Tobias Rieder scored 54 seconds into the game and Antti Raanta stopped 25 shots for the Coyotes, who won for only the second time in 10 games. Lawson Crouse added his first goal of the season with 4:25 remaining.

Arizona fell to Colorado 6-2 on Saturday prior to the NHL's three-day break.

Goligoski put the Coyotes ahead for good 10:34 into the second with his fourth goal of the season.

Arizona won despite going 0 for 4 on the power play and failing to score on a 5-on-3 chance that lasted 1:53. Colorado's penalty kill has not allowed a goal in its last 28 chances.

BRUINS 5, SENATORS 1

BOSTON (AP) - Riley Nash scored two goals, Kevan Miller got his first of the season and surging Boston beat Ottawa for its 14th win in 18 games.

Tuukka Rask stopped 25 shots for the Bruins, improving to 9-0-1 in his past 10 games. Rask was selected the NHL's first star for last week.

Danton Heinen and David Backes also scored for Boston in the first meeting between the teams since Ottawa beat the Bruins in the opening round of the playoffs last spring. Nash also had an assist on Miller's goal.

Thomas Chabot scored and Craig Anderson made 18 saves for struggling Ottawa, which lost for the ninth time in 11 games (2-7-2).

HURRICANES 3, CANADIENS 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Sebastian Aho scored two goals in the third period, and Carolina beat Montreal.

Aho's power-play goal midway through the third put Carolina in front, and he later added an empty-netter. Teuvo Teravainen scored Carolina's other goal, while Alex Galchenyuk tallied for Montreal.

Carolina has won five straight home games and six of seven overall.

Cam Ward stopped 23 shots to improve to 7-0-1 in his last eight games.

Carey Price had 32 saves for Montreal.

JETS 4, OILERS 3

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Joel Armia scored twice as Winnipeg halted Edmonton's season-high winning streak at four games.

Bryan Little and Kyle Connor also supplied goals for Winnipeg.

Leon Draisaitl had a goal and an assist for the Oilers, extending his point streak to five games. Jesse Puljujarvi and Jujhar Khaira also had a goal each, and Connor McDavid added a pair of assists.

Connor Hellebuyck made 21 saves for the Jets, who are 13-3-1 at home. Cam Talbot stopped 35 shots for the Oilers. He went into the game having won his past seven starts.

The teams were tied 2-2 after the first period, and Winnipeg led 4-3 after the middle frame.

ISLANDERS 3, SABRES 2, OT

NEW YORK (AP) - Mathew Barzal scored 1:08 into overtime to give New York the victory over Buffalo.

New York has won three of five to improve to 20-13-4. Jason Chimera and Josh Bailey also scored for the Islanders.

Zemgus Girgensons and Kyle Okposo scored for last-place Buffalo (9-20-8), which has lost four of five.

Jaroslav Halak stopped 34 shots for the Islanders, and Robin Lehner made 33 saves for Buffalo. It marked the eighth time this season Lehner stopped at least 30 shots in a game.

But it was Bailey who made the pivotal play, scoring his 11th goal on a snap shot with 1:09 left in regulation to tie it at 2. Bailey then set up Barzal for the game-winner.

WILD 4, STARS 2

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Mikael Granlund scored the tiebreaking goal in the second period, and Minnesota beat Dallas.

Jared Spurgeon, Eric Staal and Jason Zucker also scored for Minnesota, which won for just the second time in six games. Charlie Coyle had two assists and Alex Stalock made 24 saves.

Tyler Seguin and Mattias Janmark scored for Dallas.

Granlund, who had a career-high 26 goals last year, has eight this season and only one in his previous 11 games.

With the Wild on the power play and the game tied 2-2, Granlund charged in from the left wall to put home a rebound at 13:08 of the second period.

Vegas beats Anaheim, wins fifth in a row
December 27, 2017

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Cody Eakin broke a tie with a goal in the second period and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-1 on Wednesday night.

The victory for the Golden Knights was their fifth in a row and their 10th straight game where they have picked up at least a point. That established an NHL record for the longest such run by a team in its inaugural season, eclipsing the mark of nine contests set by the Panthers in 1993-94 (5-0-4).

The loss for the Ducks broke a stretch of two straight wins as they start three straight games at home following a six-game road-trip.

Golden Knights goaltender Malcolm Subban made 27 saves in the win, while Ducks netminder John Gibson made 24 stops in the loss.

After a slow first period where they were outshot 15-8, the Golden Knights took over in the second and third.

At the 15:12 mark of the second period, Eakin blasted out of the penalty box, beat Ducks defenseman Hampus Lindholm down the ice and then Gibson through the netminder's legs to give the Golden Knights a 2-1 lead.

Then 28 seconds into the third, Golden Knights forward William Karlsson took a feed from Jonathan Marchessault and buried a shot past Gibson to put the game at 3-1 in favor of Vegas. Golden Knights forward David Perron scored the empty netter in the final two minutes.

After going down early and being outplayed for most of the first period, a familiar face to Anaheim knotted the game up to send Vegas moving forward.

Former Duck Shea Theodore knotted the game at 1-1 when he skated off the point and fired a shot high to the stick side of Gibson at the 17:50 mark of the first period. For Theodore, that was his second goal and sixth point in his last three games.

At the 1:40 mark of the first period, Ducks forward Rickard Rakell took a feed from Jacob Silfverberg and buried the puck past Subban high to the goaltender's stick side to open the scoring.

NOTES: Ducks forward Ryan Kesler played in his first game of the season following summer hip surgery. He was held without a point and took three shots on goal. ... Referee Dan O'Rourke took part in his 1,000th NHL game.

UP NEXT

Ducks: The Calgary Flames visit the Honda Center on Friday, their first game in the building since ending a 29-game losing streak there.

Golden Knights: The Golden Knights head down the freeway to take on the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday in a back-to-back.

NHL notebook: Blackhawks place G Corey Crawford on IR
December 27, 2017

The Chicago Blackhawks placed Corey Crawford on injured reserve and recalled fellow goaltender Jeff Glass and forward David Kampf from AHL Rockford on Wednesday.

Crawford, who spent time on injured reserve earlier this season with a lower-body ailment, posted a 16-9-2 mark with a 2.27 goals-against average and .929 save percentage in 28 games this season. The 32-year-old was pulled early on Saturday after yielding four goals on seven shots against the New Jersey Devils.

Glass owns a 10-4-2 record with a 2.60 GAA and .917 save percentage in 18 games with the IceHogs this season. The 32-year-old Alberta native has permitted two goals or fewer in seven of his last eight appearances.

Kampf, 22, has collected seven goals and 10 assists in 30 games this season, with seven points (three goals, four assists) coming in his last seven.

--Colorado Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie is scheduled to undergo hand surgery on Thursday and is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Barrie sustained the injury to his right hand while attempting to block a shot in Saturday's 6-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes.

The 26-year-old has collected four goals and 23 assists in 34 games this season while averaging 21:20 of ice time.

--St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong signed a four-year contract extension with a club option for a fifth year.

Armstrong has served as the Blues general manager since 2010 and was named General Manager of the Year two years later.

Armstrong has guided the team to six consecutive postseason berths, making the Blues one of only four teams to have accomplished that feat. St. Louis owns a 337-185-56 mark since Armstrong became the team's general manager.
