NHL notebook: Lightning's Callahan out indefinitely
December 15, 2017

Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Ryan Callahan will be sidelined indefinitely with an upper-body injury, the team announced Friday.

Callahan, who had his right arm in a sling after Thursday's victory over the Arizona Coyotes, will be re-evaluated in three to four weeks. Callahan was injured when he was battling for a loose puck with Arizona's Oliver Ekman-Larsson and crashed into the boards.

Callahan has one goal and six points in 29 games this season.

The 32-year-old Callahan is in his fifth season with the Lightning. He missed most of the 2016-17 season due to hip issues.

--The St. Louis Blues activated backup goaltender Carter Hutton from injured reserve.

Hutton, 31, was out since taking a slapshot off the top of his foot during the team's morning skate on Dec. 7.

The 6-foot-1, 202-pound Hutton has appeared in eight games for the Blues this season, posting a 4-2-0 record with a 1.88 goals-against average and .937 save percentage.

The Blues also placed defenseman Jay Bouwmeester on IR for an undisclosed injury, recalled forward Sammy Blais from the American Hockey League's San Antonio Rampage and assigned goaltender Jordan Binnington to the AHL's Providence Bruins.

--The Arizona Coyotes recalled forward Nick Merkley from Tucson of the American Hockey League, the team announced.

A first-round draft pick of Arizona in 2015, Merkley, 20. has appeared in 20 games with Tucson, scoring 12 goals and assisting on 12 others.

NHL roundup: Ovechkin lifts Capitals in OT
December 16, 2017

WASHINGTON -- Alex Ovechkin scored 1:58 into overtime as the Washington Capitals rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 on Saturday night.

Ovechkin entered the Anaheim zone and blasted a shot from the top of the right circle that eluded goalie John Gibson. It was Ovechkin's 23rd goal of the season. Washington's Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored third-period goals.

Derek Grant and Jakob Silfverberg gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead after two periods. Gibson stopped 24 shots for Anaheim.

Braden Holtby made 28 saves for the Capitals, who won for the 10th time in 12 games. The Ducks have earned at least a point in their past seven games (3-0-4) after losing for the eighth time after regulation this season.

Blues 2, Jets 0

ST. LOUIS -- Backup Carter Hutton made a career-high 48 saves and Vladimir Tarasenko scored one power-play goal and assisted on another in St. Louis' victory over Winnipeg.

Hutton, who came off injured reserve Friday after recovering from a foot injury, recorded his first shutout of the season and ninth of his career in his first start since Dec. 1. The Jets fired 15 shots at Hutton in the first period and 21 in the second but could not score as they fell to 1-4-1 in their last six games and 0-4-2 in their last six road games.

The win snapped a six-game losing streak by the Blues against Winnipeg (0-5-1), which had won all five games in the last season's series.

Flyers 2, Stars 1 (OT)

PHILADELPHIA -- Shayne Gostisbehere scored two power-play goals, including the winner 3:50 into overtime, as Philadelphia defeated Dallas.

Jakub Voracek picked up assists on Gostisbehere's goals and goaltender Brian Elliott stopped 26 shots to give the Flyers their sixth straight victory after a 10-game losing streak.

Gemel Smith scored for the Stars, who have lost five of their last seven games (2-4-1). Ben Bishop stopped 28 shots in his third straight loss.

Islanders 4, Kings 3 (OT)

NEW YORK -- Jordan Eberle scored 1:54 into overtime as New York overcame a two-goal first period deficit to edge Los Angeles.

Eberle's score, which came after Islanders goaltender Thomas Greiss turned back two Kings breakaway opportunities, capped a wild final few minutes in which Anders Lee gave New York the lead with 3:16 remaining in regulation before Anze Kopitar forced overtime with 13 seconds left.

Josh Bailey and John Tavares also scored for the Islanders while Greiss made 26 saves. Oscar Fantenberg and Tyler Toffoli scored in the first period, and Darcy Kuemper recorded 29 saves for Los Angeles.

Hurricanes 2, Blue Jackets 1

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Noah Hanifin scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and Scott Darling stopped 35 shots to snap a five-game winless streak as Carolina defeated Columbus for its third straight victory.

Darling was 0-3-2 in his last five decisions and hadn't won since Nov. 26. Hanifin's sixth goal of the season with 7:02 left in the second is one more than the team's other six defensemen combined. He scored four goals in each of his first two seasons.

Alexander Wennberg scored for the Blue Jackets, who failed to score on the power play in four attempts and are 3 for 38 on the road this season with the man advantage -- 30th in the NHL. Sergei Bobrovsky made 22 saves for Columbus.

Penguins 4, Coyotes 2

GLENDALE, Ariz.-- Olli Maatta's slap shot goal from the left point with 14.5 seconds remaining ended Arizona's comeback and Pittsburgh survived after squandering a two-goal lead.

Evgeni Malkin scored for the Penguins and set up Maatta's goal, and captain Sidney Crosby added an empty-net goal nine seconds later as Pittsburgh ended a three-game slide and beat the Coyotes for the second time this season. Carter Rowney got the Penguins going with a short-handed goal in the second period.

The Coyotes surged back with goals by Nick Cousins and Max Domi before dropping their sixth in a row and ninth in 10 games. Arizona is an NHL-worst 7-23-5 and 3-10-1 at home.

Senators 3, Canadiens 0

OTTAWA -- Craig Anderson stopped 28 shots for his second shutout of the season as Ottawa defeated Montreal in the NHL100 Classic at TD Place.

A crowd of 33,959 braved frigid temperatures for the league's first outdoor game of the season. The win was the second in a row for the Senators, who are trying to dig out of a hole they made during a 1-5-1 road trip.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Bobby Ryan and Nate Thompson scored for Ottawa. Carey Price stopped 35 shots in goal for the Canadiens.

Rangers 3, Bruins 2 (OT)

BOSTON -- Mats Zuccarello scored a power-play goal 1:56 into overtime, giving New York a victory over Boston.

The Bruins, who had erased a two-goal deficit to force OT, were called for their second too-many-men penalty of the game to set up the winner. Zuccarello, getting the puck in the right faceoff circle, waited, waited and, with Chris Kreider serving as a screen, fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Tuukka Rask for the win, ending Boston's three-game winning streak.

Henrik Lundqvist made 33 saves in the Rangers' goal to raise his career record against the Bruins to 27-12-2. Rask made 25 saves but saw his personal five-game winning streak snapped as Boston fell to 15-10-5.

Oilers 3, Wild 2

SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- Second-period goals by Milan Lucic and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins helped Edmonton snap Minnesota's four-game win streak.

Cam Talbot, who had missed the previous seven games with an undisclosed injury, made 29 saves for the Oilers, who got the third-period game-winner from Jesse Puljujarvi.

Defenseman Matt Dumba scored twice for the Wild and Alex Stalock had 26 saves, as the Wild lost a regulation game at home for the first time since Nov. 4 after going 7-0-1.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Senators turning things around?
Monty Andrews

The Senators dominated the Centennial Classic outdoor game at Lansdowne Park, blanking the Montreal Canadiens 3-0 for their first shutout victory in more than two months.

We Meet Again

The Edmonton Oilers had little trouble with the San Jose Sharks when they met in last year's Stanley Cup playoffs. They'll face off Monday in Edmonton for the first time since the Oilers ousted the Sharks in six games in the first round of the postseason. The Oilers have won seven of the previous nine meetings overall, putting them squarely in the driver's seat as they look to save what has been a dismal season so far. Edmonton came into the season as the favorite to come out of the Western Conference, but has since slipped all the way down to +4,000 on Bet365 to win its first championship since 1990.

Turning Things Around?

Could the Ottawa Senators finally be headed in the right direction after a month-long stretch of dismal play? Fans and bettors alike will have a much better idea after Tuesday night, when the Senators seek their third consecutive victory against visiting Minnesota. The Senators dominated the Centennial Classic outdoor game at Lansdowne Park, blanking the Montreal Canadiens 3-0 for their first shutout victory in more than two months. Ottawa had lost 12 of 13 prior to its mini-win streak, and will need to string a few more victories together it it hopes to improve its +3,500 odds of winning the competitive Atlantic Division.

No Rest Needed

The Detroit Red Wings are fighting to remain playoff relevant as we approach the holiday break, but might find themselves enjoying a unique advantage as they visit Philadelphia on Wednesday in the conclusion of a road back-to-back. The odds certainly won't be in Detroit's favor in this one, but the Red Wings have actually performed well in similar situations, earning five of a possible six points on zero days rest. But the Flyers have the momentum in the head-to-head series, having won five of the last seven encounters. The road team has prevailed in each of the last two meetings.

Injury News

* The Anaheim Ducks could be facing a long stretch without winger Corey Perry, who is considered week-to-week with a lower-body injury. The Ducks will miss him greatly, having gone 9-0-5 SU in 14 games in which Perry has recorded at least one point.

* Roberto Luongo's injury-plagued season continues, as the Florida Panthers netminder was placed on injured reserve last week with a lower-body injury. The Panthers are 6-7-2 SU and 7-8 O/U in Luongo's 15 appearances so far this season.

* The San Jose Sharks will be without Logan Couture against Edmonton after he suffered a concussion over the weekend. The Sharks will miss having Couture's offense in the lineup - they're 8-2-0 SU in games in which the talented forward scores.

Player Notes

* Don't look now, but the New York Islanders have yet another offensive hero - and this month, it's Anders Lee. The veteran forward has seven goals in nine December games; despite his surge, the Isles come into the week just 3-5-1 for the month.

* Tampa Bay superstar Nikita Kucherov's road scoring prowess will be put to the test this week. Kucherov leads the NHL in road points with 25, but he will be in tough this Tuesday against a host Golden Knights team that is a red-hot 12-2-1 in Las Vegas.

* Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford has been terrific in December, going 5-0-0 with a 1.37 goals-against average for the month. Chicago has been a strong under play over that span, going 1-4 O/U during Crawford's hot streak.

Stanley Cup Futures

* Last year's Stanley Cup final participants come into this week with identical odds to make it a rematch in 2018. Both the defending-champion Pittsburgh Penguins and the Western Conference-champion Nashville Predators are listed at +1,400 on Bet365 to reach the Stanley Cup final yet again.

* We're well over two months into the 2017-18 campaign, and the expansion Golden Knights are still very much in the Stanley Cup mix - at least from an odds perspective. Oddsmakers at Bet365 have installed Vegas at +2,200 to become the first team in NHL history to win the title as an expansion franchise.

* Can the Blackhawks recapture some of their magic from earlier this decade? They're facing long odds to do so, coming into the week at +2,800 to win the Stanley Cup for the fourth time since 2010. They're also +1,000 longshots to claim the Central Division, and +1,400 to represent the Western Conference in the final.

Over/Under Trends

* The New York Rangers have been one of the top over plays in the league this season at 20-12-1 O/U, but some of the sheen might be wearing off that trend. The Rangers enter the week having gone under the total in three of their previous four games.

* Anaheim has emerged as a must-have under play so far this season, and Perry's potential long-term absence should only galvanize that trend. The Ducks have gone under in five consecutive games and are an incredible 11-21-1 O/U for the year.

NHL roundup: Kings end skid with win in Philly
December 19, 2017

PHILADELPHIA -- Adrian Kempe and Tyler Toffoli scored third-period goals, and the Los Angeles Kings leaned heavily on their top-ranked penalty kill in a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night.

Alec Martinez and Trevor Lewis also scored for the Kings, and Jonathan Quick turned aside 36 shots as Los Angeles ended a four-game road trip with a win, snapping a three-game losing streak. The Kings killed off five of their six penalties.

Jakub Voracek scored the lone goal for the Flyers, who had their six-game win streak snapped. Brian Elliott (21 saves) took his first defeat since Dec. 2.

Bruins 7, Blue Jackets 2

BOSTON -- Three rookies played key roles, as Danton Heinen and Jake DeBrusk both had a goal and two assists and Charlie McAvoy recorded a Gordie Howe Hat Trick with a goal, an assist and a fight, helping Boston rout lifeless Columbus.

Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron and David Backes added a goal and an assist each, and Torey Krug also scored for the Bruins, who snapped a two-game losing streak and finished 1-1-1 on a three-game homestand.

Josh Anderson and Seth Jones scored for the Blue Jackets.

Devils 5, Ducks 3

NEWARK, N.J. -- Stefan Noesen scored off a scramble at 15:53 of the third period to lift New Jersey to a come-from-behind victory over Anaheim.

Noesen's tiebreaking goal ruined the homecoming of former Devils center Adam Henrique, who had a goal and an assist in his first game against his old team since New Jersey traded him to Anaheim for defenseman Sami Vatanen on Nov. 30. Noesen iced the game with an empty-net goal at 19:53.

Miles Wood also scored twice for the Devils, while Jesper Bratt found the back of the net and Brian Boyle picked up three assists. Vatanen earned an assist, his first point since the trade.

Ryan Getzlaf and Jakob Silfverberg scored for the Ducks, and Josh Manson contributed two assists.

Oilers 5, Sharks 3

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Edmonton got two goals from Ryan Strome, including the 10,000th NHL goal, en route to a victory over San Jose.

Oilers goalie Cam Talbot won his second in a row since returning from a stint on injured reserve, making 18 saves. Sharks goalie Martin Jones remained stuck on 99 career wins. The Oilers put 29 shots on goal.

Patrick Maroon, Mark Letestu and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also scored for the Oilers. Joe Pavelski, Tomas Hertl and Marcus Sorensen scored for the Sharks.

Avalanche 4, Penguins 2

DENVER -- Tyson Barrie scored two goals, Semyon Varlamov had 30 saves, and Colorado beat Pittsburgh.

J.T. Compher and Mikko Rantanen also scored and Sven Andrighetto had two assists for the Avalanche, who swept the season series from the two-time reigning Stanley Cup champions.

Chad Ruhwedel had a goal and an assist, Evgeni Malkin also scored and Matt Murray had 33 saves for the Penguins.
