NEWARK, N.J. -- Taylor Hall scored twice and Cory Schneider made 16 saves as New Jersey beat Los Angeles 5-1 on Tuesday night.

The win snapped New Jersey's two-game skid and halted the Kings' eight-game winning streak, the longest in the NHL this season and one shy of the longest in franchise history.

Hall recorded his second multi-goal game of the season, while Travis Zajac, Brian Boyle and Brian Gibbons also scored for the Devils.

Torrey Mitchell scored a third-period goal for the Kings.

Lightning 3, Blues 0

ST. LOUIS -- Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov each scored and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 32 saves to lead Tampa Bay to its fifth consecutive win.

Tyler Johnson added an empty-net goal with 22 seconds to play.

Flyers 4, Maple Leafs 2

PHILADELPHIA -- Claude Giroux scored one goal and set up Sean Couturier's game-winner with a spectacular between-the-skates pass in the closing minutes of regulation to give Philadelphia a victory over Toronto.

Taylor Leier and Scott Laughton also scored for the Flyers, who won for the fourth straight time following a 10-game losing streak. It was the Flyers' first win at Wells Fargo Center since Nov. 9, snapping an 0-4-2 streak. Brian Elliott earned the win with 20 saves.

Patrick Marleau and James van Riemsdyk scored for the Maple Leafs, who had their three-game winning streak snapped. Frederik Andersen stopped 35 shots in the loss.

Oilers 7, Blue Jackets 2

NHL notebook: Penguins activate G Murray
December 12, 2017

The Pittsburgh Penguins activated two-time Stanley Cup winning goaltender Matt Murray from injured reserve, the team announced Tuesday.

Goaltender Casey DeSmith was assigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League in a corresponding move.

Murray has been sidelined the past five games with a lower-body injury sustained in Pittsburgh's 5-4 overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Nov. 27. The 23-year-old exited the contest with 4:21 remaining in the second period after Flyers forward Jakub Voracek crashed into him during a breakaway.

Murray owns a 11-7-1 mark with a 2.95 goals-against average and .906 save percentage in 21 games this season.

--Anaheim Ducks forward Corey Perry has a lower-body injury and is considered week-to-week, coach Randy Carlyle announced.

Perry was injured after his knee collided with Carolina Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner during the first period of the Ducks' 3-2 win on Monday. The former Hart Trophy winner remained on the ice for several moments before slowly skating to the bench.

Perry, 32, has collected six goals and 16 assists in 31 games this season.

Also, the Ducks recalled left winger Kevin Roy from San Diego of the American Hockey League.

--The St. Louis Blues
placed captain Alex Pietrangelo on injured reserve and recalled fellow defenseman Jordan Schmaltz from San Antonio of the American Hockey League, the team announced.

Pietrangelo, who is nursing a lower-body injury, has collected seven goals and 16 assists in 30 games this season.

--Former NHL defenseman
Zarley Zalapski, who was involved in one of the most lopsided trade deadline deals in league history, died on Tuesday. He was 49.

The cause of death was not immediately known for Zalapski, who represented his native Canada in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta.

Zalapski was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins with the fourth overall pick of the 1986 draft. He was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 1989 and spent three-plus years with the Penguins before being traded to the Hartford Whalers on March 4, 1991.

Zalapski joined John Cullen and Jeff Parker in being sent to the Whalers in a six-player deal that saw Hall of Famer Ron Francis, Ulf Samuelsson and Grant Jennings head to Pittsburgh.

--The Toronto Maple Leafs
recalled Kasperi Kapanen from their American Hockey League affiliate and placed fellow forward Nikita Soshnikov on injured reserve, the team announced.

Kapanen, who was part of the Phil Kessel deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 1, 2015, did not record a point in three games with the Maple Leafs this season.

Soshnikov has been plagued by a lower-body injury and hasn't played since Nov. 24.

In the Crease - Week 11
December 13, 2017

STREAKY TEAMS
Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Arizona 1-5-2 past eight games overall Anaheim Under 11-4-1 past 16 games overall
Philadelphia 4-0 past four games overall N.Y. Rangers Over 5-1-1 past seven games overall
Tampa Bay 5-0 past five games overall Vegas Over 10-3-2 past 15 games overall

Vetoed!

The Ottawa Senators have been in a tailspin lately, going just 1-8-1 over the past 10, including 0-5 over their past five overall. They have struggled overall, too, managing a dismal 9-13-7 mark with just 25 points out of a possibly 58 through 29 games this season. At no point have the Sens displayed any consistency, going 4-5-5 at home, and 5-8-2 on the road, while posting a minus-22 goal differential which is second-worst in the Eastern Conference, and third-worst in the NHL overall ahead of just Buffalo (minus-37) and Arizona (minus-39).

Offense is Central

The Central Division is the most underrated in hockey. All seven teams are at or above .500 so far this season, including the last-place Colorado Avalanche at 14-14-2 with 30 points. They're an impressive 8-5-1 in 14 games at home. While Colorado has tailed off lately, they are the only team in the division with a negative goal differential (minus-6), and that has only happened recently during their 3-6-1 swoon. The Avalanche were not expected to be a very good team, but they have been a thorn in people's side, including the Penguins this past week in Pittsburgh.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday, December 13

The Rangers hit the road to meet the Senators in Canada's capital city. Ottawa used to be Madison Square Garden north, but that hasn't been the case lately. New York is 0-5 in their past five trips to Ottawa, while the home team has cashed in eight of the past nine meetings overall. Lately the Rangers have been the hotter team, however, going 10-3 in their past 13 against Eastern Conference opponents, 13-5 in the past 18 games overall and 44-21 in their past 65 against teams with a losing overall mark. The Senators have won just five of their past 21 games overall, one of their past five road outings and they're 1-5 in their past six against teams with a winning record. Ottawa is also 1-7 in their past eight against Eastern Conference clubs, and 1-4 in their past five playing with no rest.

The Predators head to the Pacific Northwest to battle the Canucks as they look to stay hot. Nashville has won 13 of their past 17 games overall, including 5-2 in the past seven on the road. They're also 5-1 in their past six against teams iwth a losing overall record. Conversely, the Canucks have won just five of their past 16 against teams with a winning percentage over .600, and 4-10 in their past 14 against Central Division foes. The Canucks have won just five of their past 26 home games and 7-20 in their past 27 against Western Conference
squads.

Thursday, December 14

The Capitals make their way to Beantown to tangle with the Bruins, and TD Garden has been a home away from home for the Caps. Washington has won five straight in Boston, while winning 20 of their past 27 games overall in the series. Total bettors might want to play a nice parlay on the 'under', which is an amazing 21-5 in the past 26 meetings in the Bay State. The under is also 34-16-1 in the past 51 in this series overall. That's a stark contrast lately for the Caps, as the 'over' has connected in six of the past eight overall.

Two ice-cold squads battle at MTS Centre on Thursday when the Blackhawks skate with the Jets. Chicago has won just three times in the past 18 tries against teams with an overall winning record, and they're 2-12 in the past 14 against Central Division squads. Chicago is also just 1-4 in their past five road games, and 5-17 in the past 22 against Western Conference foes. It's strange to see such struggles for the Blackhawks. Winnipeg has been good against Western teams, going 17-5 in the past 22, and they're 20-7 in their past 27 home outings while going 20-7 in the past 27 against Central Division clubs. However, they're just 2-10 in their past 12 at home against Chicago while the road team is a perfect 4-0 in the past four in this series.

Friday, December 15

The Canucks host the Sharks in late-night action, at least if you're on the East Coast. These teams met Nov. 11 in San Jose, and it was one of the best offensive games for the Sharks in a 5-0 win. The last meeting in Vancouver on April 2, also went to the Sharks, and San Jose has won six in a row in this series, outscoring Vancouver by a 22-5 margin. In fact, the Canucks have scored one or no goals in each of the past six in this series. San Jose is 9-0-2 in their past 11 regular-season meetings in Vancouver, and 11-0-2 in the past 13 meetings in British Columbia if you count the playoffs. The last time the Canucks were able to earn two points against the Sharks in their home building was way back on Jan. 21, 2012.

Saturday, December 16

The Bruins host the Rangers for the first meeting this season between the Original Six rivals. After years of Bruins domination, the Blueshirts have turned the tables with five straight victories in this series. Offense has been a major reason New York has been successful, averaging 3.8 goals per game over the past five outings against the B's, and the 'over' has cashed in five of the past seven overall in this series. New York also headed into Wednesday's game with a 4-0-1 'over' mark in their past five against Eastern Conference clubs, and 5-1 in their past six on the road. For the Bruins, the 'under' is 6-1 in their past seven against Eastern Conference teams, again as of Wednesday and 4-1 across their past five on the road.

The Predators and Flames do battle in the Great White North, and Nashville looks to get it right against a Canadian side. They've won just once in three meetings against teams from Canada this season, including a 3-2 loss in the Music City in a shootout back on Oct. 24 against the Flames. Nashville is 2-0-2 in their past four trips to Calgary, last losing in regulation back on Halloween 2014. The Flames haven't played very well at home lately, going just 2-3-0 while yielding 3.6 goals per game during the span.

Armadillo: Friday's Den: Ranking the months of the year??.

12) January? Keep in mind that I live in upstate New York, where the weather sucks from Thanksgiving to St Patrick?s Day. January is a long, cold month; conference games in college basketball are the thing that makes it tolerable; that and the NFL playoffs.

11) February? Same as January, only three days shorter; there is something about watching golf on TV that makes you feel warmer. Super Bowl is in February and college hoop and baseball is starting in Florida and Arizona.

10) December? Today, the sun sets at 4:22; next week, the days start getting longer, but this is a long, cold, dark month. Most of the good pre-conference college basketball games are November games? Saturdays are the best basketball days in December. Christmas, bowl games and the NFL help December?s rating, but not a lot.

9) November? Steep drop-off after October; it snows sometime in November- I don?t like snow. This is a better college basketball month than December, since Thanksgiving Week is one of the best sports weeks of the year. When I was working for New York State, I had three days off in November? days off were a good thing. Now I have every day off.

8) May? 20 or so years ago, I coached Little League, which seems like a shaky decision now. Practice every weekday, couple of games a week. Kids were fine; the parents? Not so much. Nowadays, social media would make Little League easier. Could just have a Twitter page and post if practices/games were rained out. Back then? Every rainout was 12 phone calls.

7) June? I got married in June; despite that, it gets a middle-of-pack ranking because of the great weather and six hours of baseball every day.

When I was a kid, June was the best month, with school ending for the year. Little did I know back that the teachers were probably more anxious for the school year to end than we were.

6) July? If you really like the NBA, I would strongly recommend you go to Las Vegas one year and go to the NBA Summer League at UNLV. For $28 or $30 for a full day, you can watch 3-4 games, and rub elbows with NBA owners, coaches, players? lot of them are there.

Later in July, AAU basketball invades Las Vegas, with lot of tournaments? almost all the college coaches show up at events at either Cashman Center or Bishop Gorman HS or the convention center.

5) August? Here in the Albany area, August is the best social month of the year, with the horse racing in Saratoga and concerts at Saratoga Performing Arts Center and nice weather every day. Baseball?s pennant races are going on and the college football magazines are out.

4) April? Baseball season starts, the Final Four takes place and I almost always spend ten days in Las Vegas every April. Watching the Final Four in Vegas is something you should do; great fun.

Couple years ago, was sitting next to a guy who had lot of money on Villanova/under in the national title game. When Paige hits the jumper for North Carolina, the guy slumps; his under bet is a loser, but when Villanova wins at the buzzer, he was damn glad to get out of there with a split. Didn?t ask how much, but seemed like he had a lot of money riding on it.

3) October? Baseball playoffs, football is in full swing, college basketball magazines come out and I almost always spend some time in the desert.

Few years ago, I?m sitting in the theater at the Westgate Hotel in Las Vegas, watching the NFL; they have the best set-up, all the games up on a screen, with the audio up on one main game. There are betting windows in the back, food off to the left.

I?m talking to this guy who is wearing a Cardinals? jersey; all of a sudden it dawns on me that this guy is betting thousands of dollars on the games. Serious money and he doesn?t seem like he is stressed out at all. Good guy, but I would?ve been having a nervous breakdown.

Las Vegas is the big leagues when it comes to that stuff; I forget that sometimes.

2) March? Best month of year for college basketball, spring training baseball on TV every day, the weather is getting better. Still snows sometimes, but March is usually excellent.

1) September? When I was a kid, there was September/January were by far the worst months of the year. Nothing worse than the first day of school every year, but now, September is still really a summer month, and football starts during the baseball pennant races.

I went to private grade school, but then to public high school, where 9th grade was in a building by itself. I was painfully shy, and had never ridden a school bus before; my 8th grade class had 24 kids, my 9th grade class had 730 kids. Will never forget how terrified I was those first few days of 9th grade changing classes and having a locker for the first time.

Everything turned out fine, but boy I hated September back then; it never would?ve made it above #11 on my ranking back then.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Sin City can't stop scoring

A San Jose netminder has a homecoming, we get another outdoor game and there have been goals a plenty for Sin City.

Happy Homecoming?

San Jose netminder Martin Jones makes his return to his native British Columbia on Friday as he leads his Sharks into a road encounter with the Vancouver Canucks. Jones will try to help the Sharks end an ugly trend that has seen them drop six of their last eight in the second game of a back-to-back. And he's in good position to do just that, with Vancouver having won just five of its last 27 home games dating back to last season. The Canucks are coming off a humiliating 7-1 rout at the hands of the Nashville Predators, and have won just six times in their previous 27 head-to-head encounters with the Sharks.

Let's Play Outside

Outdoor games always provide a little extra intrigue to the regular season - and there will be plenty at stake for both teams as the Montreal Canadiens face the host Ottawa Senators in the Centennial Classic at Lansdowne Park. Montreal is looking for a return to consistency from netminder Carey Price, who came on like gangbusters in his return from injury but has struggled in recent games. Still, his troubles pale in comparison to those of the Senators, who have fallen out of the Eastern Conference playoff race and have dropped five straight to the Canadiens, including a 2-1 decision the last time these teams met on Nov. 29.

Goals! Goals!! Goals!!!

Sin City couldn't have asked for a better start to its NHL membership. Not only are the Vegas Golden Knights wildly successful, they're scoring goals in bunches - particularly in their own arena. The Golden Knights look to continue their success at T-Mobile Arena on Sunday night as they entertain the Florida Panthers. Vegas averages a healthy 3.6 goals per game at home, a major reason why they come into the weekend 19-10-2 O/U for the season. The numbers suggest they shouldn't have much trouble adding to that total, with the Panthers coming into this one surrendering 3.38 goals per contest.

Injury News

* Jaromir Jagr's stint in Calgary isn't going well. Jagr has missed the last five games with an lower-body injury and is questionable for Saturday's game against the Nashville Predators; the Flames are 8-8-1 SU and 11-5-1 O/U with Jagr in the lineup.

* The Columbus Blue Jackets are adjusting to live without forward Brandon Dubinsky, who will miss 6-to-8 weeks with an orbital bone fracture suffered in a fight against Edmonton's Zack Kassian. Columbus is 7-3-1 SU when Dubinsky records a point.

* When will he return? That's what Toronto Maple Leafs fans are wondering after superstar Auston Matthews missed his third game in a row Thursday with a hand injury. Matthews was struggling prior to the injury with one goal in his previous nine games.

Player Notes

* Rookie forward Brock Boeser is off to a sizzling start for Vancouver, but the Canucks haven't taken full advantage - at least, not yet. Boeser has 16 goals to date - tops among first year players - but Vancouver is just 5-5-1 in games when Boeser scores.

* The formula has always been a simple one for the Washington Capitals - they win when Alex Ovechkin scores. Ovechkin had an empty netter in Thursday's 5-3 win over Boston; the Caps have won seven straight games when he scores.

* The New York Islanders have a major problem in goal, where Thomas Greiss is playing his worst hockey since reaching the NHL. Greiss was victimized for five goals in Thursday's loss to Columbus and has surrendered 30 in his last seven starts.

Stanley Cup Futures

* The Tampa Bay Lightning are the team to beat when it comes to Stanley Cup futures. Led by electrifying forwards Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov and sensational goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, the Lightning are listed at +600 on Bet365 to win it all. The Eastern Conference leaders have just one game this weekend - a Saturday tilt in Colorado.

* Looking for a clear leader in the West? You won't find one - at least, not on Bet365. The St. Louis Blues are installed at +425 to reach the Stanley Cup final and +1,200 to win the championship - only slightly better than the Los Angeles Kings, listed at +440 to win the West and +1,250 to claim the league title. Nashville is next at +525 and +1,400, respectively.

* As for the two-time defending-champion Pittsburgh Penguins, they came into the season as the Stanley Cup co-favorites out of the East but have fallen on hard times as they struggle to produce goals in 5-on-5 situations. The Penguins are installed at +900 to come out of the conference and +1,600 to become the first team to three-peat since the New York Islanders (1980-83).

Over/Under Trends

* A combination of a lethal offense and recent defensive struggles have made the New York Islanders the league's top over play through 32 games. The Doug Weight-led Isles are 21-10-1 O/U to date, including a solid 10-3 at home.

* San Jose was easily the worst over play in the league last season, exceeding the total just 22 times. Apparently, oddsmakers haven't learned their lesson - the Sharks are trending in that direction yet again, having gone 8-21-1 O/U so far.
