WASHINGTON -- Alexander Ovechkin scored his league-leading 21st goal, Nicklas Backstrom ended a 21-game goal-scoring drought, and Tom Wilson scored twice as the Washington Capitals cruised to a 6-2 victory over the sliding Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday.

Brett Connolly and Evgeny Kuznetsov also scored for the Capitals, who have won six of seven to move into a tie for second place in the Metropolitan Division.

Lance Bouma and Jonathan Toews scored for Chicago.

Maple Leafs 2, Flames 1 (SO)

TORONTO -- Frederik Andersen made 47 saves, and William Nylander scored the decisive goal in a shootout as Toronto defeated Calgary.

Mark Giordano scored for the Flames in regulation, and Morgan Rielly replied for the Maple Leafs.

Mike Smith made 28 saves for Calgary.

EDMONTON, Alberta -- After breaking a 10-game losing skid with a win over the Flames in Calgary on Monday, Philadelphia continued its turnaround with a victory over Edmonton.

Wayne Simmonds had a goal and an assist, and Jordan Weal, Dale Weise and Michael Raffl also scored for the Flyers, who were on an 0-5-5 run before Monday. Brian Elliott made 24 saves.

Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins got the goals for the Oilers. Goalie Laurent Brossoit, who gave up five goals -- including four in the third period -- in his most recent start, stopped 29 shots.

NHL notebook: Seattle group to apply for expansion team
December 7, 2017

A Seattle ownership group has been authorized to file an application for an NHL expansion team, commissioner Gary Bettman said Thursday from Manalapan, Fla., where the league's board of governors are meeting.

Bettman said the expansion fee has been set at $650 million for Seattle, which would become the league's 32nd team, if approved. The Vegas Golden Knights, who began play this season, paid a $500 million expansion fee.

The Seattle group includes Jerry Bruckheimer, a Hollywood producer, and David Bonderman, a private equity CEO.

The Seattle City Council approved a privately financed $600 million renovation to KeyArena on Monday with the aim of getting NHL and NBA franchises as tenants. Seattle lost the NBA SuperSonics to Oklahoma City following the 2007-08 season.

--The Carolina Hurricanes announced that Dallas entrepreneur and philanthropist Tom Dundon has signed an agreement to purchase a majority stake in the team.

Pending league approval and the finalization of the sale, Dundon will take control of all team operations. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said from the board of governors meeting in Manalapan, Fla., on Thursday that the franchise will be staying put.

Dundon, who runs a Dallas-based private investment firm, is the majority owner of Employer Direct Healthcare and serves as the co-chairman of Topgolf. Karmanos, who originally purchased the franchise in 1994, will maintain an equity stake in the team. In 1997, Karmanos relocated the team from Hartford, Conn., to North Carolina, where it has captured three division titles, two conference titles and the 2006 Stanley Cup.

--Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk received a one-game suspension from the NHL for unsportsmanlike conduct during Wednesday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The suspension is the third in 103 career games for Tkachuk. The 19-year-old is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and will forfeit $11,280.49.

Tkachuk speared Maple Leafs forward Matt Martin from the bench with 5:53 remaining in the first period of Wednesday's game. He was not assessed a penalty on the play, however.

--Vancouver Canucks center Bo Horvat could be sidelined as many as six weeks with a fractured foot. The Canucks said a firmer timeline will be available after Horvat visits a specialist.

Horvat sustained the injury after jamming his right foot into the boards with 11:10 remaining in the third period of Tuesday's 3-0 win against the Carolina Hurricanes.

The 22-year-old was off to a fast start with 10 goals and as many assists in 28 games this season. His 20 points rank second on the team behind only rookie Brock Boeser (25 points). Horvat has recorded 59 goals and 78 assists in 259 career contests since being selected by Vancouver with the ninth overall pick of the 2013 NHL draft.

--The Pittsburgh Penguins placed Justin Schultz on injured reserve and recalled fellow defenseman Frank Corrado from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Schultz, who must sit out at least the next three games, sustained a lower-body injury during Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the New York Rangers. The 27-year-old has two goals and eight assists in 23 contests this season.

Corrado did not record a point and averaged 11:06 of ice time in three games with Pittsburgh this season. The 24-year-old Toronto native has scored one goal and set up four others with a plus-4 rating in 12 contests with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

--The Dallas Stars recalled Mike McKenna from AHL Texas.

McKenna has posted a 6-5-1 mark with a 3.53 goals-against average and .871 save percentage in 13 games with Texas this season.

The 34-year-old St. Louis native signed with Dallas on July 1. He owns a 5-11-2 record with a 3.48 GAA and .889 save percentage in 22 career NHL contests with the Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils, Columbus Blue Jackets and Arizona Coyotes.

NHL roundup: Capitals top Rangers for fourth straight win
December 8, 2017

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Reilly Smith's goal in the sixth round of a shootout Friday night gave the Vegas Golden Knights a 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators at sold-out Bridgestone Arena.

Vegas forced overtime at 19:20 when, with a sixth skater, Erik Haula ripped a one-timer from the right circle for his 10th goal of the season.

Nashville had gained its first lead at 14:56 of the third period off a turnover from Shea Theodore. Viktor Arvidsson took the puck and fed Nick Bonino, who had plenty of time and space in the slot to wire a wrister home for his sixth goal of the season.

Arvidsson brought the Predators even at 8:04 of the third with his 10th goal, poking the rebound of Kevin Fiala's shot past a prone Malcolm Subban.

Blackhawks 3, Sabres 2, (OT)

CHICAGO -- Gustav Forsling scored the winning goal with 4.9 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Chicago over Buffalo at the United Center.

Alex DeBrincat and Tommy Wingels also scored for the Blackhawks, who erased a one-goal deficit with 3:22 remaining in the third period. Forsling finished with a goal and two assists to help Chicago snap a five-game winless streak.

Jason Pominville and Kyle Okposo scored for the Sabres, who picked up a point by taking the game to overtime but fell short against Chicago for the 12th game in a row.

Capitals 4, Rangers 2

WASHINGTON -- Matt Niskanen scored the go-ahead goal with 3:32 remaining, Tom Wilson and Nicklas Backstrom each added a goal and an assist, and the Washington Capitals defeated New York.

Wilson's goal gave Washington a 4-2 lead with 1:32 left. Backstrom and Jay Beagle also scored for the Capitals, who have won four straight and seven of their last eight.

Michael Grabner and Jesper Fast scored for the Rangers in the first meeting of the season between the Metropolitan Division rivals.

Blue Jackets 5, Devils 3

NEWARK, N.J. -- After losing to New Jersey on Tuesday, Columbus rebounded to end a two-game skid with the help of a five-point game from Artemi Panarin.

With the score tied 3-3 early in the third period, Alexander Wennberg came through with only his second goal of the season, snapping a 17-game drought, at 1:32. The goal was just Columbus' eighth all season on the power play.

Zach Werenski put the game away, scoring a four-on-four goal at 15:02 to make it 5-3. Panarin had the primary assist on all five Columbus goals, tying franchise records for most points and assists in one game.
