November 30, 2017

DENVER -- Nathan MacKinnon scored a power-play goal 59 seconds into overtime and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 on Wednesday night.

MacKinnon also had an assist, Alexander Kerfoot produced a goal and an assist, and Nikita Zadorov scored for the Avalanche.

Goaltender Semyon Varlamov had 31 saves in his return to the lineup after missing four games because of illness. Bryan Little and Josh Morrissey scored and Connor Hellebuyck had 23 saves for the Jets.

ST. LOUIS -- Antoine Vermette scored two goals and John Gibson stopped 37 of 39 shots to lead Anaheim over St. Louis.

Kevin Roy also scored for the Ducks.

But Blues Kyle Brodziak ruined Gibson's bid for his first shutout of the season with 3:48 left in the game. Brodziak scored again with 17 seconds left to pull the Blues within a goal.

Canadiens 2, Senators 1

MONTREAL -- Montreal won its third consecutive game with a victory against Ottawa, which lost its seventh straight.

Jonathan Drouin, on a penalty shot, and Phillip Danault scored for the Canadiens and Carey Price made 27 saves. Price is 3-0-0 with two goals allowed since missing 10 games with a lower-body injury.

Mark Stone scored a shorthanded goal for the Senators, and Mike Condon made 29 saves.

Bruins 3, Lightning 2

BOSTON -- Rookie defenseman Charlie McAvoy had a goal and an assist as Boston built a three-goal lead and held off league-leading Tampa Bay.

Boston's fifth win in its last six games also marked the first victory in goal for Tuukka Rask (19 saves) since Nov. 5. McAvoy, Riley Nash and Torey Krug scored to build the 3-0 lead before Andrej Sustr (first goal of the season) and Steven Stamkos (first goal in six games) answered for the Lightning, who finished a 1-3-0 road trip.

In the Crease - Week 9
November 29, 2017

STREAKY TEAMS

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Buffalo 1-7-2 past 10 games overall Anaheim Under 4-1-1 past six at home

Nashville 10-1-1 past 12 games overall N.Y. Islanders Over 6-1-1 past eight games overall

N.Y. Islanders 7-1 past eight games overall San Jose Under 14-2 past 16 games overall

Inpenetrable Fortress

The New York Islanders are the only team in the National Hockey League yet to take a regulation loss at home. They've been a big friend at the betting window, as they're 7-1 across their past eight games overall, while also hitting the 'over' at a 6-1-1 clip during the span. That has made for some nice parlays in the past couple of weeks. The upcoming schedule is about to get a lot more difficult, with the Ottawa Senators, Washington Capitals, Dallas Stars and Los Angeles Kings as the next four opponents to visit Barclays Center.

Jets Overhead

The Winnipeg Jets have been playing good hockey lately, particularly at home. They have won seven of their past nine games overall, and they're 7-0-1 in their past eight outings at MTS Centre in Manitoba, last losing at home in regulation back on Oct. 17 when the Columbus Blue Jackets paid a visit. They have been able to piece together plenty of wins lately, going 14-6 in their past 20 outings following a victory. And they have had a lot of success playing with one day of rest, going 19-7 in their past 26 contests.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday, November 29

Those Jets will fly into Denver to tangle with the Avalanche, and it should be a high-scoring affair. The 'over' has connected in 17 of the past 21 against Central Division opponents for the Jets. The Avalanche enter this game as a rested bunch, and that's bad news for opponents. The over is 9-1-1 across the past 11 when playing on three or more days of rest, while going 12-3 in their past 15 games overall. The over has also hit in 12 of their past 16 games played at Pepsi Center, while going 18-7-1 in the past 26 against teams with a winning percentage over .600. As far as the side, the home team has hit in four straight, while the Jets are a dismal 2-6 in their past eight trips to the Mile High City.

The Ducks limp into St. Louis to battle the Blues, and they aren't likely to find the elixir to cure their ills. The Blues have won 11 of the past 14 at home, while going 16-5 in their past 21 games against Pacific Division opponents. They're laos 39-18 in their past 57 against teams with a losing overall mark. Anaheim hasn't had a lot of success in St. Louis, either, losing their past four trips. The home team is an impressive 39-12-1 in the past 52 in this series, too.

Thursday, November 30

Two Original Six clubs battle at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, as Montreal skates into town. The Habs haven't had a lot of success on the road lately, winning just three times over their past 11 away from home. They're also 2-5 in their past seven overall, while going 6-13 in their past 19 in the third game of a 3-in-4 (three games in four days) situation. The Wings aren't much better, as they have dropped five straight, while going 2-6 in their past eight against teams with a losing overall mark. Total bettors might like the 'under' in this one. The under is 9-1-1 in the past 11 for the Canadiens, while going 11-1-1 in the past 13 in the third game of a 3-in-4 situation. The under is 7-1 in Detroit's past eight against the East, and 4-0-1 in their past five meetings against the Habs.

The Coyotes came up just short in Tuesday's game in Calgary, now they'll try to vanquish the other NHL team from the province of Alberta. The Coyotes have won just once in the past six tries against the Flames, while going 3-10 in their past 13 trips to Calgary. The under is also 5-1 in the past six meetings in Calgary, while cashing in nine of the past 12 meetings in this series. The under is also 7-1 in Arizona's past eight road games, while hitting in 11 of the past 13 games overall.

Friday, December 1

The Blues and Kings will do battle on Friday night on the banks of the Mississippi River, and there haven't been a lot of goals in this series lately. The 'under' is 5-2 in the past seven meetings, although the first meeting this season on Oct. 30 resulted in an 'over'. Three of the past six in this series have been one-goal games. Over the past seven meetings, the Blues are averaging 1.9 goals per game, while the Kings have averaged the same. It could be another low-scoring battle on Friday night.

Saturday, December 2

The Sharks and Lightning meet in Tampa for Round 2 of their coast-to-coast series this season. The clubs met at the SAP Center on Nov. 8, and the Lightning came away with a 5-2 victory behind Andrei Vasilevskiy in a rare 'over' result for the Sharks. The Lightning rank second in the NHL with 3.63 goals per game, while the Sharks are on the opposite end of the spectrum with 2.61 goals per game to check in 28th in the league. San Jose is also the stingiest in the league, yielding just 2.17 GPG, so it's a contrast in styles so far. Tampa Bay won the first battle of offense vs. defense. Will it happen again?

The Battle of Alberta is always an entertaining affair, and Saturday might feature a little more desperation than usual. The Oilers have been struggling, and might be one of the biggest disappointments in the NHL this season. However, a trip to Calgary might be just what the doctor ordered. Edmonton has won five straight games in this series, and the home folk have seen the Flames top the Oilers in Calgary since Dec. 27, 2015. We might be in for some fire wagon hockey on Saturday night, too, as the 'over' has cashed in six straight meetings between these provincial rivals in Calgary.

Best and Worst Bets
November 29, 2017

BEST NHL BETS

The only two teams that you can bet on frequently without concern are the Tampa Bay Lightning and St. Louis Blues. You could probably sell me on Nashville and the Devils in that conversation as well.

However, finding other strong bets is getting harder as we hit the meat grinding portion of the season. Be patient ? we?re still trying to figure out who?s who in the NHL. These are four teams you should keep your fingers on the pulse of, and one bet-off team for good measure.

Washington Capitals (14-10-1)
We?ve avoided featuring the Capitals in this space for the balance of the season because they?re a tough team to gauge. Ovechkin isn?t slumping, but he isn?t surging. Evgeny Kuznetsov leads the team with 26 points and is dynamite in a bottle. What?s paralyzed us is their point differential, which stands at a meager -0.1 for the year.

So why consider them as a bet? Well for starters, they?ve compiled a nice 4-1 SU stretch over their last five games which included trouncing Toronto and Tampa Bay. The other part? They have a week?s worth of games at home where they?re a comfortable 8-4 SU overall.

The Capitals grade out as a wobbly streaking team, meaning that they?ll go on stretches where they win far more games with a loss here or there. After building a three-game breeze in their last few outings, they?ll be a hot team to bank on at home. Value is tough here since they sort of grade out as a public team, but Washington should be a solid play or parlay stuffer while they ride momentum.

If their hotness peters out over the weekend, then jump ship.

Next Games: vs. LA (11/3), vs. Columbus (12/2), vs. San Jose (12/4), vs. Chicago (12/6), vs. NYR (12/8)

Winnipeg Jets (15-6-3-0)
The Jets have had some weird mishaps on the road, but get to feast on the Colorado Avalanche tonight so that should be par for the proverbial course. Blake Wheelers has been a monster for this team, pushing his enormous frame around the rink and rifling off a team-leading 71 shots this season. He has 28 points overall this season and is helping set the tone for a Jets team that has become as competitive as anyone else recently. Ride the wave, even if you take a couple bumps along the way. They have a very soft schedule coming up.

Next Game: at Colorado (11/29), vs. Vegas (12/1), vs. Ottawa (12/3), at Detroit (12/5), at Florida (12/7)

San Jose Sharks (13-8-1-1)
Where the Sharks have value is on the road, where they?re 6-2-1-0 on the season. They have three roadies within the span of four days, so it?s a bit tight, but that?s going to mean the chance for value. Nobody rates the Sharks that highly. However, they recently beat the Kings away and lost in overtime to the Knights. It?s a tough east coast road trip on the schedule, but worth the risk given the value you?re bound to see in the NHL sportsbook.

Next Games: at Florida (12/1), at Tampa (12/2), at Washington (12/4), vs. Carolina (12/7)

?BIG MAYBE? - New York Islanders (15-7-1-1)
The Islanders have never lost at home in regulation, but this next slate could really help define them. At an even 7-7 SU when travelling, the Panthers hit the road against four substantial clubs over the next week or so. Tampa Bay is inarguably the best team in the league right now, but Pittsburgh and Boston are both limping and Florida is up-and-down. This next stretch could solidify the Islanders as a true contender and I?m willing to bet to find out.

Next Games: vs. Ottawa (12/1), at Florida (12/4), at Tampa (12/5), at Pittsburgh (12/7)

?HARD NO? ? Vancouver Canucks (11-10-2-2)
The last time the Canucks were featured in this space, they were a definitive bet-on team. And we rode that streak pretty hard?until it ended in a bad way. The Canucks are now a brutal 3-7 SU in their last 10 games and face a prohibitive murderer?s row through the weekend. Games against Nashville and Toronto will have their backs against the wall. You should not be betting on Vancouver for any reason, and do not be tempted by their mini homestand over the course of the week. Vancouver simply can?t score enough goals to stay in contention.

Next Games: at Nashville (11/30), vs. Toronto (12/2), vs. Carolina (12/5), vs. Philadelphia (12/7)

NHL roundup: Oilers' Russell knocks in game-winner for Leafs
December 1, 2017

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Edmonton's Kris Russell scored a goal for the Oilers, then he scored his second of the night. But the latter was for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

With the score tied 4-4 and 1:05 left on the clock, Russell tried to clear the puck behind his net, and ended up rifling it through the legs of Oilers goalie Laurent Brossoit. The own goal -- credited to the Leafs' Patrick Marleau -- was the decider as the Leafs went on to win 6-4, with Nazem Kadri adding an empty netter.

Russell has scored early in the third period to tie the game 4-4.

Mark Letestu had three points for the Oilers, William Nylander had three points for the Leafs.

Oilers captain Connor McDavid, the reigning MVP, got a goal, and Leafs star Auston Matthews had a goal and assist.

Brossoit was starting in place of Cam Talbot, who was placed on injured reserve Thursday morning.

Canucks 5, Predators 3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Daniel Sedin scored his 1,000th career point with a game-tying power-play goal, and rookie Brock Boeser tacked on the game-winning marker less than four minutes later as Vancouver rallied to topple Nashville.

Sedin, whose assist on Loui Eriksson's second-period goal was point number 999, hit his milestone with a wrister from the slot at 10:22 of the third period. Fittingly, twin brother Henrik Sedin drew an assist, his second of the night and his 1,034th career point.

Boeser snapped a 3-3 tie with a wrister from the right post at 14:08. Eriksson tacked on an empty-netter at 19:03 to salt it away. Both Sedins logged assists, giving them three-point nights.

Canadiens 6, Red Wings 3

DETROIT -- Right winger Brendan Gallagher had two goals and an assist to lead Montreal to its fourth straight win.

Left winger Max Pacioretty had a goal and an assist, while left winger Charles Hudon, right winger Andrew Shaw and left winger Alex Galchenyuk also scored for Montreal. Goaltender Carey Price stopped 28 shots.

The Canadiens were playing the second of back-to-back games after defeating Ottawa 2-1 in Montreal on Wednesday night.

Detroit is winless in its last six games (0-3-3).

Stars 4, Blackhawks 3 (OT)

CHICAGO -- Mattias Janmark scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner 51 seconds into overtime, and Dallas beat Chicago.

Janmark flipped a shot past goalie Corey Crawford to finish off the win, which was Dallas' third straight.

The Blackhawks (12-9-4) tied the game 3-3 at 4:34 of the third period when Patrick Kane redirected a Gustav Forsling shot past Dallas goalie Ben Bishop, who remained in the game after taking a shot to the mask earlier in the period.

Kings 5, Capitals 2

WASHINGTON -- Marian Gaborik scored his first two goals of the season, Jonathan Quick stopped 27 shots, and Los Angeles got its third straight win.

The Kings trailed 2-1 before Jonny Brodzinski and Jussi Jokinen scored goals nine seconds apart in the second period.

Gaborik, playing in his fourth game, tallied in the first period, and he and Tyler Toffoli added empty-netters for the Kings.

Evgeny Kuznetsov scored twice for the Capitals, who saw their three-game winning streak end.

Wild 4, Golden Knights 2

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Eric Staal scored twice in the third period, including the game-winner just past the midway point of the period, to lift Minnesota past Vegas.

Matt Dumba's blast struck Vegas defenseman Deryk Engelland on the hand and deflected to Stall for a tap-in goal at 12:05 of the period. Staal added an empty-net goal with 5.1 seconds left to seal it.

Flames 3, Coyotes 0

CALGARY, Alberta -- Mike Smith stopped all 28 shots he faced and Mark Jankowski scored twice as Calgary blanked Arizona.

Making his first start against his former team since being acquired in a trade June 17, Smith was solid in net as recorded his second shutout of the season and 35th of his NHL career.

Goalie Scott Wedgewood, who made his fourth straight start for the Coyotes (6-18-4), stopped 41 of 44 shots he faced.

NHL notebook: Ducks, Devils complete major trade
November 30, 2017

The Anaheim Ducks acquired former 30-goal scorer Adam Henrique, fellow center Joseph Blandisi and a third-round pick in the 2018 draft from the New Jersey Devils on Thursday for defenseman Sami Vatanen and a conditional draft pick.

Henrique, who scored a career-high 30 goals in 2015-16, has four goals and 10 assists in 24 games this season. The 27-year-old Ontario native has recorded 122 goals and 135 assists in 455 career contests since being selected by the Devils in the third round of the 2008 draft. Henrique is in the fifth season of a six-year deal which carries a cap hit of $4 million per campaign.

Vatanen has scored a goal, set up three others and is averaging 21:06 of ice time in 15 games this season. The 26-year-old native of Finland made his season debut on Oct. 28 after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery. Vatanen has two seasons remaining on a four-year deal with an annual average value of $4.875 million. He has recorded 33 goals and 93 assists in 280 career games since being selected by the Ducks in the fourth round of the 2009 draft.

--Vancouver Canucks forward Derek Dorsett will not return to the active roster due to health risks associated with playing.

Dorsett underwent cervical disc herniation surgery in December 2016. The 30-year-old Saskatchewan native was medically cleared to start the 2017-18 season, but stiffness in the neck and back persisted.

Dorsett recorded seven goals and two assists in 20 games this season. The scrappy forward collected 51 goals, 76 assists and 1,314 penalty minutes in 515 career games with the Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers and Canucks.

--The Nashville Predators
recalled Anders Lindback from Milwaukee and assigned fellow goaltender Juuse Saros to the AHL affiliate.

Lindback has an AHL-leading 11 wins to go along with a 2.32 goals-against average and .925 save percentage in 15 games this season for the Admirals.

Saros has posted a 1-3-1 mark with a 3.71 GAA and .870 save percentage in five games this season. The 22-year-old Finn owns an 11-12-4 record in 27 career appearances -- all with Nashville.

--The Vegas Golden Knights activated defenseman Luca Sbisa off injured reserve after he missed seven games with a lower-body injury.

The expansion club also placed forwards David Perron and William Carrier on injured reserve.

Sbisa recorded one goal, seven assists and eight penalty minutes in 16 games this season. The 27-year-old from Italy has collected 17 goals and 79 assists in 481 career games since being selected with the 19th overall pick of the 2008 draft by Philadelphia.

Perron and Carrier are both being hampered by upper-body injuries and did not travel with the Golden Knights (15-7-1) for Thursday's game against the Minnesota Wild (11-10-3).

--The Edmonton Oilers placed Cam Talbot on injured reserve Thursday and recalled fellow goaltender Nick Ellis from AHL Bakersfield.

Coach Todd McLellan told reporters that Talbot "tweaked something" during Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes. The 30-year-old Talbot, who sat out practice with an upper-body injury on Wednesday, will miss at least the Oilers' next two games.

Talbot owns a 10-10-1 mark with a 3.00 goals-against average and .903 save percentage in 22 games this season.
