In the Crease - Week 8
November 22, 2017

STREAKY TEAMS

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak
Buffalo 0-4-2 past six games overall Buffalo Under 6-1-0 past seven overall
N.Y. Islanders 6-0-1-1 past eight home games Colorado Over 12-0-0 past 12 overall
Vegas 8-1-0-0 past nine home games San Jose Under 11-1-0 past 12 overall
Buffalo Soldiers

The Buffalo Sabres have been scuffling lately at home, going 2-6 over their past eight in Western New York. Oddly enough, one of those victories came against the Washington Capitals back on Nov. 7. The Sabres have had difficulty putting the biscuit in the basket, scoring just four goals over their past three games, and two or fewer goals in five of the past six. outings. Since Oct. 24 they're averaging just 1.92 goals per game over the past 12 contests. It's no surprise that the under is 6-1 over their past seven battles, and 8-3-1 during the 12-game span.

Lightning Strikes

The Tampa Bay Lightning have rolled up 80 goals through 20 games, averaging 4.0 goals per game. They have easily been the most prolific offensive squad, and lately that has translated to plenty of over results. The over has cashed in five of their past six outings, and the over is also 4-1 across their past five games on the road. They're back in action on Wednesday against the visiting Blackhawks, and for what it's worth, the over is 7-0-1 in Tampa Bay's past eight games on a Wednesday. The over is also 13-3-1 in their past 17 playing on more than three days of rest, while going 13-5 across their past 18 at home.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday, November 22

The Islanders and Flyers will do battle in Brooklyn, and the trends lately seem to favor the home team. Philadelphia is 5-2 in their past seven against eams with a winning record, but they're a dismal 2-5 in the past seven playing in the second end of a back-to-back situation. They have also dropped four in a row, and they're 10-27 over the past 37 road outings. The Isles have rattled off five wins across the past six home games, they're 9-3 in the past 12 against Eastern Conference foes and 9-3 in their past 12 against teams with an overall losing record. Philly has dominated this series lately, however, going 40-13 in the past 53, including 20-7 in their past 27 trips to Uniondale/Brooklyn. The road team is 5-1 across the past six.

The Rangers used to make themselves right at home in Raleigh, and they're still 9-4 across their past 13 trips to the Triangle. However, the home team has picked up victories in five in a row, so perhaps times are changing. The Blueshirts have managed just two wins across their past 10 road outings, too, and they're 1-5 in the past six against Metropolitan Division foes. Meanwhile, Carolina has won five of their past six against Estern Conference teams while going 5-2 over the past seven overall.

In the desert, the Sharks skate into Glendale looking to tame the Coyotes. The home team has actually won seven of the past nine games in this series. San Jose has picked on the dregs of the league, going 20-7 in the past 27 road games against teams with home winning percentages under .400. The 'Yotes have managed to win just 14 of their past 54 against Western Conference foes, while going just 1-8 in their past nine home games overall.

Thursday, November 23

There is no hockey on Thursday, so enjoy the football, the food and the Thanksgiving holiday everyone!

Friday, November 24

The Canucks pay a visit to New Jersey on Friday evening looking for revenge. Former Canucks backstop Cory Schneider stopped all 37 shots he faced in Vancouver for the 2-0 victory. The Canucks are playing much better these days, and head to the Steel City on Wednesday looking for a sixth road win in their past eight tries. However, they're still just 12-27 across their past 39 against Eastern Conference foes, and 7-19 in the past 26 against Metropolitan Division opponents. The Devils have won just 11 of their past 34 at home, and they're just 6-14 across the past 20 against teams with a losing record.

The Hurricanes host the Maple Leafs on Friday night at PNC Arena in Raleigh. The past four meetings in this series has resulted in the road team coming away with victories. The 6-3 victory by the Hurricanes in Toronto back on Oct. 26 was a rare offensive explosive, as the 'under' is 9-1 over the past 10 meetings in this series. Over the past 10 in this series, Toronto is averaging 1.9 goals per game while Carolina has averaged 2.3 goals per game during the stretch. As such, a line of 5.5 or 6 might mean a favorable under play.

Saturday, November 18

The Canadiens host the Sabres on Saturday night at Bell Centre. By then Carey Price might be back from his injury. Minnesota native Charlie Lindgren has been filling in, doing an admirable job in the veteran's stead. The Habs posted a 2-1 victory in overtime on Nov. 11 in the most recent meeting, as Lindgren was very sharp. In the first meeting, it was Montreal winning in a shootout at Buffalo, 3-2, back on Oct. 5. Yes, Montreal is 2-0 against Buffalo so far, but both contests have been ultra close.

The Blues host the Wild on Saturday night, and it should be a tight one. Five of the past 10 regular-season meetings have resulted in one-goal games, and the 'under' is 6-3-1 during the span. Usually these battles feature a lot of defense, and that's been the case frequently for Minnesota. The 'under' is 4-2-1 over their past seven heading into play Wednesday, and 8-5-2 over their past 15. For St. Louis, the totals have been all over the board and much less certain.

Josh Anderson scores in OT, Blue Jackets win 5th straight
November 22, 2017

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Josh Anderson scored two minutes into overtime to give the Columbus Blue Jackets their fifth straight win, 1-0 over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night.

Sergei Bobrovsky had 22 saves for Columbus in his third shutout this season and 22nd of his career. Mike Smith turned away 40 shots for Calgary.

It was the first time this season that either team ended regulation scoreless.

The Jackets outshot Calgary 2-1 for much of the game.

The Flames, however, dominated puck possession in the first 90 seconds of overtime before the Jackets pushed into the offensive zone.

Calgary's T.J. Brodie sought to set up play from behind his own net, but the puck rolled off onto the stick of Nick Foligno, who sent it to Anderson for the game-winner.

PREDATORS 3, CANADIENS 2, SO

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Filip Forsberg scored a pair of power-play goals and Kyle Turris had the only goal in a shootout to lead Nashville over struggling Montreal.

Pekka Rinne made 27 saves in regulation and overtime, then denied all three Montreal shootout attempts as Nashville won for the eighth time in nine games.

Jordie Benn and Joe Morrow scored for the Canadiens, who have lost their last five. Morrow's goal evened the score with less than a minute left in the third period.

In the tiebreaker, Turris beat Antti Niemi with a wrist shot between the pads.

Benn scored the game's first goal at 12:47 of the opening period. Skating through the slot, he took a pass from Charles Hudon and beat Rinne with a wrist shot to the stick side.

Forsberg tied it at 1 with a second remaining in the first.

LIGHTNING 3, BLACKHAWKS 2, OT

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Brayden Point scored a power-play goal 3:25 into overtime, and Tampa Bay rallied again to beat Chicago.

Point took a pass from Steven Stamkos while positioned near the post and put the winner past Corey Crawford.

Tampa Bay got also goals from Ondrej Palat and Chris Kunitz, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 29 saves. Ryan Callahan had two assists.

Patrick Kane scored twice and Crawford stopped 35 shots for the Blackhawks, who blew leads in losing both games between the teams last season.

Tampa Bay scored four third-period goals Jan 24 for a 5-2 win in Chicago, and the Lightning battled back from a 4-1 deficit to win 5-4 in overtime at home Mar. 27.

Kunitz tied it 2 just 31 seconds into the third.

CAPITALS 5, SENATORS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Alex Ovechkin scored his first goal in seven games, Jakub Vrana had two goals for the first time in his career and the Washington beat Ottawa.

Ovechkin's 14th goal came in his first game this season as linemates with Nicklas Backstrom, who led the team in assists last season. Backstrom assisted on the play.

Evgeny Kuznetsov added a goal and two assists, and Alex Chiasson had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who have earned at least a point against the Senators in nine consecutive meetings.

Braden Holtby made 29 saves to help Washington avoid its first set of back-to-back home losses this season.

Ryan Dzingle scored on a second-period power play for Ottawa before the Senators failed to capitalize later in the period on a 5-on-3 advantage that lasted 76 seconds.

BRUINS 3, DEVILS 2, SO

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Charlie McAvoy scored in the 11th round of the shootout to lift Boston over New Jersey.

Anton Khudobin made 40 saves as Boston improved to 9-7-4 with its third straight win - all with Khudobin in goal.

Jake DeBrusk and Patrice Bergeron scored first-period goals for the Bruins.

New Jersey has dropped three of its last five in falling to 12-5-4.

Jesper Bratt and Brian Gibbons scored for the Devils, and Cory Schneider made 27 saves.

The shootout opened with Hall and David Pastrnak trading goals. And it stayed that way until McAvoy's game-winner.

RANGERS 6, HURRICANES 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Chris Kreider and Jesper Fast scored two goals apiece, including Kreider's first just 52 seconds into the game, and New York rolled to victory over Carolina.

Mika Zibanejad and Paul Carey followed Kreider with goals in the first 11 minutes as the Rangers jumped out to a commanding lead. Kreider got his second goal 20 seconds into the third, and Fast scored twice in the final period to turn it into a rout.

Henrik Lundqvist made 30 saves as the Rangers won for the eighth time in their last 10 games.

Sebastian Aho scored for the fifth game in a row and Teuvo Teravainen had an assist in his fifth straight to lead the Hurricanes. Scott Darling stopped just 21 of 27 shots.

Kreider and the Rangers grabbed the momentum early and never let it go.

PANTHERS 2, MAPLE LEAFS 1

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Nick Bjugstad scored Florida's only goal in regulation and the game-winning goal in a shootout as the Panthers beat Toronto.

Bjugstad skated in and held the puck until Toronto goalie Frederick Andersen was sprawled out, then moved to his right and flipped in his goal during the fourth round of the shootout.

The Panthers won the tiebreaker 2-1 after Aleksander Barkov scored for Florida, and Patrick Marleau was successful for Toronto.

Vincent Trocheck and Henrik Haapala had assists for the Panthers (8-11-2).

Nazem Kadri netted a goal for Toronto (14-8-1), assisted by Connor Brown and Marleau.

Florida goalie Roberto Luongo and Andersen each made 42 saves.

CANUCKS 5, PENGUINS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Rookie Brock Boeser scored two more goals to lead Vancouver over Pittsburgh.

Boeser, after scoring twice against Philadelphia on Tuesday, added two more and now has 11 this season. Former Penguin defenseman Derrick Pouliot scored a power-play goal, his first with Vancouver. Loui Eriksson, playing in his 800th career game, scored his second. Brandon Sutter, another former Penguin, scored an empty-net goal for the Canucks, who won in Pittsburgh for the first time since Dec. 4, 2014. Vancouver is 3-5-3 at home, but has won eight of 11 on the road this season.

Anders Nilsson withstood a third-period Penguins' surge to stop 43 shots for the Canucks.

Jake Guentzel scored twice, both on the power play, for Pittsburgh and now has eight this season. The Penguins started the season with wins in seven of their first 11, but now have just four wins in their last 12. Pittsburgh gave up two power-play goals for the second straight game and has allowed 10 in its last six.

Matt Murray stopped 32 shots for Pittsburgh.

ISLANDERS 4, FLYERS 3, OT

NEW YORK (AP) - Josh Bailey scored 32 seconds into overtime to give New York the victory over Philadelphia, extending the Flyers' losing streak to six games.

Bailey's fifth goal of the season improved New York's home record to 7-0-2. Bailey also had two assists for the Islanders, who have earned at least one point in each of their first nine home games for the first time since 1978.

Thomas Greiss made 35 saves as New York upped its overall record to 12-7-2. Greiss is 7-2-2 this season and 5-0-1 in his last six games.

Josh Ho-Sang's goal midway through second period put the Islanders ahead 3-2, but Jakub Voracek tied it with his seventh of the season at 13:54.

Ho-Sang's tip-in past Flyers netminder Brian Elliott at 11:05 was his second goal of the season and second in five games since being recalled from AHL Bridgeport.

The go-ahead goal came after New York defenseman Johnny Boychuk tied the game with the Islanders on a two-man advantage. Boychuk finished off a passing play at 7:13 of the middle period with his third goal of the season, assisted by Bailey and John Tavares.

OILERS 6, RED WINGS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Jujhar Khaira scored to break a 2-2 tie in the second period, and Edmonton went on to beat Detroit.

Edmonton halted a three-game losing streak, while the Wings lost their second straight.

Patrick Maroon, Darnell Nurse, Drake Caggiula, Jesse Puljujarvi and Mark Letestu also scored for the Oilers.

Niklas Kronwall and Tomas Tatar scored the Wings' goals.

Khaira gave the Oilers a 3-2 lead with 9:36 left in the second period when he beat Howard with a low wrist shot from the high slot.

WILD 5, SABRES 4

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Nino Niederreiter and Mikael Granlund each scored two goals to lead Minnesota over Buffalo.

Tyler Ennis also scored and Mikko Koivu and Ryan Suter each had two assists as the Wild snapped a two-game losing streak. Devan Dubnyk made 29 saves.

Niederreiter has scored in five straight games, the second-longest streak in franchise history.

Jordan Nolan scored twice for the Sabres. Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart also had goals. Robin Lehner made 17 saves after replacing Chad Johnson following the first period. Johnson stopped 10 shots.

The Wild scored three goals in a 5:29 span in the first period and led the rest of the way.

Marcus Foligno fed his former Sabres teammate Ennis for the first goal nine minutes into the game. Granlund scored unassisted to put the Wild ahead with 7:32 remaining in the period.

NHL roundup: Golden Knights beat Sharks in OT
November 24, 2017

LAS VEGAS -- Jonathan Marchessault jammed in a goal from the left side of the net at 1:21 of overtime to give the Vegas Golden Knights a 5-4 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Friday afternoon at T-Mobile Arena.

It was the eighth straight home victory for the Pacific Division-leading Golden Knights (14-6-1), which tied the NHL record for most consecutive wins by a team in an inaugural season set by the Toronto Arenas in 1917-18.

William Karlsson scored two goals for Vegas, which also snapped San Jose's three-game road win streak.

Vegas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in first period on defenseman Shea Theodore's first goal of the season and Neal's power-play goal over the blocker of San Jose goalie Martin Jones, the 250th career goal for Neal.

Capitals 3, Lightning 1

WASHINGTON -- Backup goalie Phillip Grubauer buckled down after allowing a goal only 82 seconds into the game by not allowing another goal in the Capitals' win over Tampa Bay.

The win came a day before Grubauer's 26th birthday on Saturday.

A demanding four-game road trip got off to a sluggish start for Tampa Bay,

Despite being outshot 30-16 in the first two periods, the first-place Lightning had a chance to tie the game in the third period before they pulled their goalie with the score 2-1.

Islanders 5, Flyers 4 (OT)

PHILADELPHIA -- New York completed a home-and-home sweep of Philadelphia with a second straight overtime win.

Islanders defenseman Nick Leddy scored 2:44 into overtime to give the Islanders a come-from-behind win.

Forwards Mathew Barzal, Cal Clutterbuck, Jordan Eberle and Andrew Ladd scored goals in regulation for the Islanders, who trailed 4-2 entering the third period.

The Islanders won for the fifth time in six games. They are now six points ahead of the Flyers in the Metropolitan Division standings.

Goaltender Thomas Greiss turned aside 26 shots to earn the win.

Wild 3, Avalanche 2 (SO)

SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota Wild prevailed over the Colorado Avalanche in a shootout.

Charlie Coyle and Chris Stewart scored the only goals of the shootout for the Wild, who came from behind to win their second game in a row and improve to 6-1-1 in their last eight.

The Wild (11-8-3) got an early goal from Jason Zucker and a power-play goal from Nino Niederreiter, along with 28 saves from Alex Stalock in the win. He stopped attempts by Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen in the shootout.

J.T. Compher and Blake Comeau scored in the first period for Colorado (11-8-2), which got 25 saves from Jonathan Bernier but saw a two-game winning streak snapped.

Winnipeg 4, Ducks 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Nikolaj Ehlers registered two goals and an assist, Brian Little recorded a goal and two assists, and Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Anaheim Ducks.

Winnipeg (14-5-3) won its fifth game in six contests and improved to 2-1-0 on a four-game road trip.

Anaheim (10-9-3) lost its second straight game. Francois Beauchemin scored the lone Ducks goal. John Gibson made 31 saves.

Bruins 4, Penguins 3

BOSTON -- Boston backup goaltender Anton Khudobin won his fourth straight game, a decision over slumping Pittsburgh.

Khudobin, who had 17 saves, has gone 12-0-2 in 14 starts dating back to last season.

Khudobin has stopped 129 of 136 shots during his four-game run, and that doesn't count the 10 he handled in an 11-round shootout win at New Jersey. He is 7-0-2 on the season and has already matched his wins total from last season.

David Pastrnak scored the game-winner on a breakaway 5:06 into the third period, taking a long pass from Riley Nash between two defenders before going in and beating Matt Murray for his 11th goal of the season.

Devils 3, Canucks 2

NEWARK, N.J. -- Brian Boyle scored on an emotional night for him in the New Jersey Devils' victory.

During training camp, Boyle was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid/Myelogenous Leukemia and missed the first 10 games of the regular season.

In his NHL return following the diagnosis, Boyle scored against the Canucks. On Friday, with the Devils hosting their Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness night, Boyle scored again after his wife Lauren, and children Declan and Isabella helped drop the ceremonial first-puck, for which Boyle took the faceoff.

Taylor Hall had a goal and two assists, and Damon Severson also scored, while Cory Schneider made 23 saves for New Jersey.

Sabres 3, Oilers 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Jacob Josefson, Jack Eichel and Kyle Okposo scored, and Robin Lehner made 29 saves to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a win.

Lehner came within 19 of recording his second shutout of the season for Buffalo (6-13-4).

Josefson opened the scoring with 5:44 remaining in the second. After some good work by Josefson down low, Okposo found Josefson in the left circle for a one-timer into the top of the net. It was Josefson's first goal as a Sabre; he has points (one goal, one assist) in consecutive games after missing 15 games with a lower-body injury.

Eichel made it 2-0 43 seconds into the third period. Skating through the right circle, Eichel picked up his seventh goal of the season on a shot to the short side.

Predators 2, Blues 0

ST. LOUIS -- Pekka Rinne made an early goal by Ryan Johansen stand up to give the Nashville Predators a win.

Rinne stopped 33 shots in earning his second shutout of the season and 45th of his career as the Predators won their fourth game in a row and improved to 9-1 in their last 10 games.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Blues, who were playing their first game against a Central Division opponent since Oct. 19. It was the first game between the Blues and Predators, who defeated St. Louis in the playoffs last season en route to reaching the Stanley Cup final.

Maple Leafs 5, Hurricanes 4

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Goalie Frederik Andersen did most of his good work early in the game and in the final two minutes as the Toronto Maple Leafs held on to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes.

Andersen stopped 43 shots, denying Carolina on 26 of their 27 shots across the first two periods.

Zach Hyman, Josh Leivo, Ron Hainsey, James van Riemsdyk and Patrick Marleau scored for the Maple Leafs (15-8-1), who have points in eight of their last nine games.

Derek Ryan, Jordan Staal, Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin posted the Carolina goals. The last three came in the third period, including Hanifin's with 4:11 to play.

Stars 6, Flames 4

DALLAS -- Tyler Seguin had a hat trick and Ben Bishop stopped 34 of 38 shots for the Dallas Stars in a win over the Calgary Flames.

Seguin scored once in the second period and twice in the third. His second goal, the eventual game-winner with 5:57 remaining, was the 200th of his career. Seguin added an empty-netter with 1:00 remaining.

Antoine Roussel, Alexander Radulov, who added an assist, and Gemel Smith also scored for Dallas (12-10-1, 25 points), who also got two assists from John Klingberg. The Stars are now 9-2-0 at home.

Sean Monahan had two goals and an assist, Johnny Gaudreau had a goal and two assists for Calgary (12-9-1, 25 points), who also got a goal from Michael Ferland.

Coyotes 3, Kings 2

GLENDALE, Ariz.-- Christian Fischer scored at 2:42 of overtime off a rebound of Christian Dvorak's shot and the Arizona Coyotes overcame two blown leads to keep the Los Angeles Kings in their slump.

Scott Wedgewood stopped 23 shots while filling in for the injured Antti Raanta as Arizona finally won in the Western Conference after starting the season 0-8-2 against their rivals. The Coyotes also won for only the second time this season at Gila River Arena -- both times in overtime -- and now are 2-7-1 there.

Backup goalie Darcy Kuemper stopped Alex Goligoski on an unimpeded breakaway early in the overtime, but couldn't make the save as Dvorak's wrist shot deflected wide and Fischer, skating wide, put it into the net for his sixth goal.

Despite Kuemper's 30 saves, the Kings lost their seventh in eight games after starting 11-2-2. They've scored only 11 goals during those seven losses.

Rangers 2, Red Wings 1 (OT)

NEW YORK -- Despite being outshot 41-31 by the Detroit Red Wings, the Rangers escaped with an overtime victory at Madison Square Garden, their seventh straight victory at home.

Mats Zuccarello's goal 37 seconds into the extra period would not have been possible without Henrik Lundqvist's heroics in regulation; the goaltender stopped 13 of 14 chances in the third period and all 17 he faced in the first period as the Rangers (12-9-2) sputtered during the first 20 minutes.

In his past four starts, Lundqvist has made 132 saves on 136 shots to raise his save percentage this season to .918, which is as close as he's been to his career numbers since the season began.

Blue Jackets 5, Senators 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With the score tied and the outcome hanging in the balance midway through the third period, the red-hot Columbus Blue Jackets took control and kept their winning streak going.

Cam Atkinson's second goal of the game broke the stalemate and sent the Blue Jackets on their way to a victory over the Ottawa Senators at Nationwide Arena.

Columbus (15-7-1) has won six games in a row, its longest streak since its team-record 16-game run last season.

Atkinson's blast from the left circle at 10:40 gave the Blue Jackets (15-7-1) the lead in the third. He also scored Columbus' first goal in the opening period.

The Tampa Bay Lightning claimed forward Chris DiDomenico off waivers from the Ottawa Senators on Friday.

The 5-foot-11, 174-pound DiDomenico played in 12 games with Ottawa this season, recording three goals and three assists, including three power-play points, while averaging 10:40 in ice time per contest. He has played in 15 career NHL games, all with the Senators, after making his debut last season.

DiDomenico, 28, also appeared in four games with the Belleville Senators of the American Hockey League this season, notching three goals and two assists. The native of Toronto played in 78 career AHL games with the Senators and Rockford Ice Hogs, registering 22 points (five goals, 17 assists).

--The Calgary Flames assigned goaltender Eddie Lack to the Stockton Heat and recalled goalie David Rittich from their American Hockey League affiliate.

Lack, 29, was placed on waivers by the Flames on Thursday. The native of Sweden has not played since allowing five goals on 15 shots before being pulled in an 8-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Nov. 15.

Rittich, a native of the Czech Republic, has a record of 5-1-0 with a 2.17 goals-against average, .931 save percentage and two shutouts in six games with Stockton this season.

--The Buffalo Sabres
assigned defenseman Casey Nelson to the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League.

Nelson, 25, has one goal and three assists in 14 games with Rochester this season. He owns four assists and 12 penalty minutes in 18 career NHL contests with Buffalo.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Nelson signed an entry-level NHL contract with the Sabres as an undrafted free agent on March 22, 2016.

--The Washington Capitals
recalled forward Tyler Graovac from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.

Graovac, 24, recorded a goal and an assist in four games with Hershey since being assigned on a long-term conditioning loan on Nov. 14.
