NHL roundup: Lightning stay hot, rout Stars
November 16, 2017

TAMPA, Fla. -- In a battle of the NHL's top two power plays, the red-hot Tampa Bay Lightning managed to score on both Thursday night, getting a power-play and short-handed goal en route to a 6-1 victory over the Dallas Stars at Amalie Arena.

Steven Stamkos scored twice and goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy (27 saves) outplayed former Tampa Bay teammate Ben Bishop, who gave up six goals in his return to Tampa, the most he has allowed since he was traded away last spring.

Tampa Bay (15-2-2) continued its dominating play, now 6-0-1 in its last seven games, starting with a power-play goal from Stamkos 47 seconds into the second period. He added an even-strength goal in the third period, giving him 10 goals for the season.

The final tally came from Nikita Kucherov, who extended his NHL lead with his 17th goal with 6:08 left. Stamkos added two assists, and leads the league with 35 points.

Wild 6, Predators 4

SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- Jason Zucker's backhand shot with 2:55 remaining in the third period completed a crazy comeback as Minnesota won its fourth in a row and snapped Nashville's five-game winning streak.

The Wild trailed 4-2 with seven minutes to play before Jared Spurgeon and Eric Staal scored to tie the game, and Zucker eventually won it. Zucker has eight goals in his last five games.

Spurgeon added an empty-net goal from the far blue line with 67 seconds left. Matt Dumba and Nino Niederreiter also scored for Minnesota. Devin Dubnyk, who recorded shutouts in his three previous games, made 26 saves for the Wild.

Penguins 3, Senators 1

OTTAWA -- Pittsburgh scored twice in the second period and held on to defeat Ottawa in a rematch of last spring's Eastern Conference finalists.

Patric Hornqvist, Jake Guentzel and Riley Sheehan scored, and Matt Murray made 21 saves for the Penguins. Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored and Craig Anderson stopped 26 shots for the Senators.

Pageau broke Murray's shutout bid with 9:31 left in the third. Sheehan snuffed out any chance of a comeback when he took a pass from Sidney Crosby and scored into an empty net with 31 seconds left.

Maple Leafs 1, Devils 0 (OT)

TORONTO -- William Nylander scored with 2.2 seconds left in overtime as Toronto defeated New Jersey for its fifth straight victory.

After the teams slogged through three periods without a goal, the Devils had a power play when the Maple Leafs' Jake Gardiner was penalized for interference at 42 seconds of the overtime period. Toronto killed off the penalty, but New Jersey continued to dominate until Nylander took his shot from the high slot that ended the game for his fourth goal of the season.

The Maple Leafs' Frederik Andersen stopped 42 shots while Cory Schneider made 24 saves for the Devils.

Coyotes 5, Canadiens 4

MONTREAL -- Christian Fischer scored the game-winning goal with 9:50 left as Arizona defeated Montreal for its first regulation victory of the season.

Christian Dvorak, Brad Richardson, Tobias Rieder and Derek Stepan also scored for the Coyotes (3-15-3). Antti Raanta stopped 33 shots for Arizona.

Brendan Gallagher, Paul Byron, Joe Morrow and Shea Weber scored for the Canadiens. Charlie Lindgren made 27 saves for Montreal.

Avalanche 6, Capitals 2

DENVER -- Gabriel Landeskog scored three goals -- one on a penalty shot -- for his first career hat trick, and Colorado beat Washington.

Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and four assists, Mikko Rantanen had a goal and three assists and Semyon Varlamov stopped 28 shots for the Avalanche. Colin Wilson scored his first goal for Colorado.

Sam Girard, the 19-year-old defenseman acquired from Nashville in the three-way trade for Matt Duchene, had an assist. Center Vladislav Kamenev, also from Nashville, made his Avalanche debut before leaving with a broken arm in the second period.

Blues 4, Oilers 1

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Brayden Schenn scored twice as St. Louis rebounded from losing back-to-back games for the first time this season by defeating Edmonton.

Vladimir Sobotka (short-handed) and Alex Steen also scored for the Blues. Jake Allen stopped 29 shots for St. Louis.

Ryan Strome scored for the Oilers while Cam Talbot made 35 saves for the Oilers. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had an assist, giving him 12 points in the last 11 games.

Jets 3, Flyers 2 (SO)

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Mark Scheifele, Patrik Laine and Bryan Little scored in the shootout as Winnipeg defeated Philadelphia.

Scheifele pulled the Jets even with 49 seconds to play in regulation, converting a goalmouth feed from captain Blake Wheeler.

The Flyers got a couple quick goals in the first period from Jakub Voracek and Sean Couturier, and for the next two-and-a-half periods, it looked like the work of their goaltender Brian Elliot was going to be enough to halt a two-game losing streak.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 31 shots for the win while Elliot made 30 saves. Mathieu Perreault, who was back in the lineup after missing a dozen games, scored the first marker for the Jets.

Islanders 6, Hurricanes 4

NEW YORK -- Johnny Boychuk scored the tiebreaking goal with 4:25 left to cap a wild back-and-forth affair and lift New York over Carolina.

The Islanders' Jordan Eberle scored an empty-netter with 1:18 left. Mathew Barzal, Cal Clutterbuck, Nick Leddy and Josh Bailey also scored for New York while Thomas Greiss recorded 28 saves.

Elias Lindholm, Noah Hanifin and Sebastian Aho also scored for the Hurricanes. Scott Darling made 30 saves.

STREAKY TEAMS

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Los Angeles 0-3-1 past four games at home Colorado Over 9-0-0 past nine overall

Tampa Bay 5-0-1 past six games overall Columbus Under 4-0-0 past four overall

Vancouver 6-3-0 past nine road games Vancouver Under 6-2-0 past eight overall

Mile High...REAL High

The Colorado Avalanche are in the midst of a 9-0 'over' run, as their games have been end to end lately. They have three or more goals in six straight games, averaging 4.4 goals per game during the span. They're also allowing 4.2 goals per game over the past 10 outings, so it's been an avalanche of cash for total bettors playing Colorado lately. With games on deck against Washington, Nashville, Detroit, Dallas, Minnesota, Calgary and Winnipeg, it looks like the good times could continue to roll.

Eight Is Enough

The Edmonton Oilers entered Tuesday's game against expansion Vegas as the lowest scoring team in the NHL. That's completely unacceptable with the talent on that club. They stepped up in a big way against the Golden Knights, posting an eight-spot, and Connor McDavid came alive with a pair of goals and three points. They entered the game with a total of eight goals over their past four outings combined. This could be the awakening hockey fans have been waiting to see from the Oilers, who were picked by some to go deep into the playoffs.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday, November 15

There are just three games on the NHL slate on Wednesday, but some interesting matchups. The Flames roll into the Motor City to battle the Red Wings, but they're down to backup goaltender Eddie Lack, with veteran Mike Smith not along for the start of the six-game, 11-day road trip. Calgary is 5-1 over their past six games, and 4-1 in the past five outings. In addition, they're 4-0 in their past four against Eastern Conference teams, and 20-6 in their past 26 against teams with a losing overall record. The Red Wings are the completely opposite lately, going 1-4 in their past five at home, while winning just four of their past 13 overall. While the Flames have won five of the past six overall, the home team has won four of their past five in the series. The 'over' is 2-0-2 in the past four, while going 11-4-1 in the past 16 meetings in Detroit.

It's a battle of .500 teams when the Bruins and Ducks battle on 'The Pond'. Boston heads in with just one win over the past five overall, and no victories in the past four on the road. However, they're 11-4 in their past 15 against Pacific Division foes, and 4-1 in their past five against Western Conference squads. The Ducks have struggles with injuries to date, and they're just 1-5 in their past six, and 1-4 in the past five at home. So something's gotta give, right? Well, Anaheim has won four straight at home in SoCal against the B's, and seven stragiht meetings overall.

Thursday, November 16

The Hurricanes head north to Brooklyn to tangle with the Islanders. Battles on the island have worked out well for the Canes, as they're 8-2 in their past 10 trips to Brooklyn, and the road team has cashed in four straight in this series. In addition, the over has cashed in eight of the past 11 battles at Barclays, and 26 of the past 37 in this series. The over is 9-2 in Carolina's past 11 against teams with a winning record, too, while going 9-2 in New York's past 11 overall, and 4-1 in their past five at home.

The Blues head to Northern Alberta to tangle with the Oilers. St. Louis has won seven of their past 10 games overall, while going 8-3 in their past 11 battles against Pacific Division opponents. And, for what it's worth, they're 8-2 in their past 10 appearances on Thursday. For the Oilers, they're an impressive 6-1 in their past seven against Central Division opponents, and 23-10 in their past 33 against Western Conference teams. The difference in this one might be head-to-head trends. St. Louis has dominated this series, winning 19 of the past 26 overall, including six of their past eight trips to Edmonton. The under has hit in five of the past seven.

Friday, November 17

There are just two games on the slate Friday, but the Rangers and Blue Jackets game should be quite interesting. It's already the third meeting of the season between these sides, with the Blueshirts winning 5-3 at MSG on Nov. 6 in the most recent meeting, and the Blue Jackets taking it 3-1 on Oct. 13 in the first meeting in C-Bus. Last season the Jackets nipped the Rangers 3-2 in the season series, and the final four meetings saw the road team come away with two points. The 'over' has cashed in six of the past eight meetings, too.

Saturday, November 18

The Saturday slate features five matinee games, including Calgary-Philadelphia, Edmonton-Dallas, Arizona-Ottawa, New Jersey-Winnipeg and Florida-Los Angeles. Generally afternoon games trend to the 'under' due to tired legs, but the fact there are five teams in the lower half in the NHL in scoring, including the 31st-ranked scoring team (Oilers), 25th (Coyotes), 19th (Stars), 18th (Flames) and 16th (Flyers), should mean low-scoring results.

The Islanders will battle the Lightning in Central Florida, and if last season is any indication it might be a long night for the visitors. Tampa Bay went 3-0 against the Islanders last season, and they won by a combined score of 14-2. Tampa Bay has won nine of their past 11 at home heading into Thursday's game, so it could be more of the same for the Isles. They have held their head above water away from home this season, however, going 4-4 over their past eight, averaging 3.4 goals per game during the stretch.

The Avalanche and Predators tangle in the Music City on Saturday night. Nashville already has one home win under their belt against Colorado this season, 4-1 back on Oct. 17. The Predators have posted a respectable 5-1-0-1 record in seven games at home this season, while Colorado is 3-6 in nine games away from the Mile High City. As managed previously, the Avalanche enter Wednesday with nine consecutive 'over' results, and the 'over' has cashed in four ofthe past five for the Preds. While the 'under' hit in that early meeting in Nashville, the 'over' is 3-0 in the past three home games for the Predators.

Bobrovsky makes 36 saves, Blue Jackets beat Rangers 2-0
November 17, 2017

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Sergei Bobrovsky made 36 saves for his 21st career shutout and Zach Werenski and Artemi Panarin scored in the Columbus Blue Jackets' 2-0 victory over the New York Rangers on Friday night.

New York ran into a hot goalie in Bobrovsky, the reigning Vezina Trophy winner who notched his second shutout of the season in powering Columbus to its third straight victory.

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist was nearly as good against the increasingly aggressive Blue Jackets, stopping 40 shots on the night. The Rangers lost their second straight following a six-game win streak.

After a scoreless first period in which both goalies made some slick, sprawling saves, Werenski found the back of the net with his sixth goal of the season 13:34 into the second.

Brandon Dubinsky lost the handle of the puck in the slot, and Werenski picked it up just inside the right circle and beat Lundqvist with a one-timer.

Panarin scored his fourth goal of the season on a power play 7:14 into the third period, rocketing a slap shot from the high slot that ricocheted off the bar and in.

RED WINGS 3, SABRES 1

DETROIT (AP) - Tomas Tatar scored a go-ahead goal midway through third period and Detroit went on to beat Buffalo.

Detroit's Luke Glendening broke a scoreless tie late in the second period. Ryan O'Reilly pulled Buffalo into a 1-all tie 5:50 into the third.

Dylan Larkin scored late in the game and Jimmy Howard had 19 saves for the Red Wings. They have won consecutive games at home for the first time this season.

Tomas Tatar breaks tie in 3rd, Red Wings beat Sabres 3-1
November 17, 2017

DETROIT (AP) The Detroit Red Wings were putting the puck everywhere other than into the net for two-plus periods. They were shooting off the post, across the crease and firing wide on chances.

Luke Glendening broke a scoreless tie late in the second period and Tomas Tatar scored a go-ahead goal midway through third and the Red Wings went on to beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-1 on Friday night.

''With all the chances we were getting and not scoring, it could've been one of those games that haunted us,'' Glendening said. ''We played smart and stuck with it and it paid off.''

Dylan Larkin scored late in the game to seal the victory and Jimmy Howard had 19 saves for the Red Wings. They have won consecutive games at home for the first time this season, showing Little Caesars Arena is starting to provide a home-ice advantage.

''It is starting to feel like home,'' Glendening said.

Ryan O'Reilly pulled Buffalo into a 1-all tie 5:50 into the third before ending with a familiar result.

''We are embarrassed by this,'' O'Reilly said. ''We have to play with a much better effort that we showed.''

Robin Lehner gave his struggling team a chance, stopping the first 20 shots he faced and finishing with 30 saves.

''Robin is a very good goalie, who I got to know working out together last summer,'' Howard said. ''He's a great competitor, who doesn't quit.''

The Sabres have lost four straight, one away from their longest losing streak of the season, but were thankful they didn't lose more than a game in Detroit.

Jack Eichel went to the dressing room late in the second period after coming off the ice slowly, keeping weight off his right skate following a collision with Glendening, and making a brief stop on the bench. Buffalo's standout center was cleared to return at the start of the third period.

Eichel said he felt fine after the game, but he wasn't happy with his team's effort.

''They came at us in waves,'' he said. ''We know they have speed, but we didn't respond to it. You have to be a strong forechecking team against them, and we just let them get the puck out of their zone with no problems at all.''

After a scoreless first period with a combined 14 shots, Detroit outshot Buffalo 13-4 in the second and took control without that translating to a big lead.

''They have a lot of speed, and they really took it to us in the second period,'' Sabres winger Evander Kane said. ''We didn't get physical, and they just skated all over us.''

The Red Wings had a lot of chances to score, including a two-man advantage for 26 seconds, but scored only once over the first two periods.

O'Reilly took advantage of being down only a goal when he scored off a rebound early in the third.

Tatar, one of Detroit's players to miss on opportunities to score earlier in the game, sent a wrist shot from the high slot through traffic and past Lehner 8:36 into the final period. Larkin sealed the victory by scoring with 4:06 left in the game.

NOTES:
The Sabres have an Eastern Conference-low 14 points, a total that puts them ahead of only Arizona in the NHL. ... Glendening has five goals in 20 games, scoring two more times than he did in 74 games last season.

UP NEXT

Sabres: Host the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night in a matchup of last-place teams.

Red Wings: Play the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday at home.

NHL notebook: Jackets sign Atkinson to 7-year extension
November 17, 2017

The Columbus Blue Jackets signed right winger Cam Atkinson to a seven-year, $41.125 million contract extension that will run through the 2024-25 season.

The contract has an average annual value of $5.875 million, general manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced Friday.

Atkinson, 28, owns 233 points (125 goals, 108 assists) and 106 penalty minutes in 397 career NHL games, all with the Blue Jackets. He ranks second in team history in goals and game-winning goals (25), fourth in points, seventh in games played and 10th in assists.

--The Toronto Maple Leafs
agreed to terms with forward Josh Leivo on a one-year contract extension worth $925,000, the team announced.

Leivo, 24, has one assist in five games for the Maple Leafs this season.

--The Detroit Red Wings
placed defenseman Danny DeKeyser on long-term injured reserve, the team announced.

The move is retroactive to Oct. 10, the last time DeKeyser played in the third game of the season.

He was injured when the puck struck his ankle from close range.

In a corresponding move, the Red Wings recalled defenseman Brian Lashoff from the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins.
