November 6, 2017

The Boston Bruins placed forward David Krejci on injured reserve and recalled goaltender Zane McIntyre from Providence of the American Hockey League on an emergency basis, the team announced Monday.

Krejci has missed the team's last six games with a back injury sustained in the Bruins' 6-3 win against the Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 19. The 31-year-old has collected one goal and five assists in six games this season.

Krejci has 158 goals and 374 assists in 711 career contests, all with Boston. He was selected by the Bruins in the second round of the 2004 NHL draft.

McIntyre has posted a 4-2-0 record with a 2.51 goals-against average and .907 save percentage in six games with Providence this season.

--The Edmonton Oilers assigned forward Kailer Yamamoto to the Western Hockey League's Spokane Chiefs.

Yamamoto, 19, played in nine games with the Oilers, posting three assists, two penalty minutes and 21 shots. He recorded his first NHL point on Oct. 14 against the Ottawa Senators.

Yamamoto was selected by the Oilers in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2017 NHL draft.

--The Columbus Blue Jackets placed left winger Matt Calvert on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, and he is expected to miss three to four weeks, the team announced.

Calvert, 27, suffered the injury after absorbing a hit in the third period of Saturday night's 5-4 shootout loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Calvert has eight points (three goals, five assists) and nine penalty minutes while averaging 15:25 in ice time per game in 14 outings this season.

NHL notebook: Ducks captain Getzlaf could be out 2 months
November 7, 2017

Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf will be sidelined for as long as two months following surgery to repair his fractured cheekbone on Tuesday.

Getzlaf sustained the injury after taking an errant puck to the face following a deflected shot from Sebastian Aho during an Oct. 29 game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Getzlaf, who had already missed eight games due to multiple injuries, has one goal and six assists in six games this season. The forward has recorded 237 goals, 584 assists and 736 penalty minutes in 867 career contests since being selected by Anaheim with the 19th overall pick of the 2003 draft.

--St. Louis Blues forward Robby Fabbri underwent successful surgery on his left knee, the second knee operation in the past year for the 21-year-old pivot. There is no timetable for Fabbri's return at this time.

Fabbri originally tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Feb. 4, and he had surgery three weeks later. Fabbri then re-injured his knee during training camp.

In 123 career regular-season games with the Blues, Fabbri, a first-round pick of the Blues in 2014, has 29 goals, 37 assists and 52 penalty minutes.

--Calgary Flames forward Jaromir Jagr returned to the ice vs. the Vancouver Canucks.

Jagr has two assists in five games since signing as a free agent with Calgary at the end of training camp. The Flames are Jagr's ninth NHL team.

The Flames assigned fellow forward Tanner Glass to AHL Stockton. Glass did not notch a point and recorded five penalty minutes in seven games this season with the Flames.

--The Columbus Blue Jackets activated right winger Cam Atkinson off injured reserve.

Atkinson, who set career highs in goals (35), assists (27), points (62) and rating (plus-13) last season.

The 28-year-old Connecticut native has been sidelined with a lower-body injury sustained in an Oct. 28 game against the St. Louis Blues.

--The Pittsburgh Penguins activated defenseman Justin Schultz from injured reserve and re-assigned defenseman Zach Trotman to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Schultz had been on injured reserve with a concussion since Oct. 27. He was in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Arizona Coyotes, scoring the first goal of the game in the first minute of the game. Schultz, who missed the past six games with a concussion, has two goals and two assists in 11 games this season.

Trotman appeared in three games for the Penguins.

--The Arizona Coyotes recalled forward Michael Sislo from Tucson and assigned goaltender Louis Domingue to the AHL affiliate.

Sislo collected four goals, two assists and 10 penalty minutes in nine games with the Roadrunners this season. The 29-year-old Sislo recorded three goals, two assists and six penalty minutes in 42 career NHL contests with the New Jersey Devils.

Domingue, 25, has posted a career record of 27-41-7 with two shutouts, a .906 save percentage and 3.00 goals-against average in 84 career games with the Coyotes.

--The Buffalo Sabres recalled defenseman Zach Redmond from AHL Rochester and placed forward Justin Bailey on injured reserve.

This is Redmond's second stint with the Sabres this season after appearing in two games following a recall on Oct. 21. The 6-foot-2, 212-pound Redmond has recorded one goal and four assists in seven contests this season with the Americans of the AHL. Redmond has collected nine goals, 29 assists and a plus-10 rating in 132 career games with the Montreal Canadiens, Colorado Avalanche, Winnipeg Jets and Sabres since being selected in the seventh round of the 2008 draft by the Atlanta Thrashers.

The 22-year-old Bailey, who is nursing an undisclosed injury, has two goals and an assist in seven games this season with Buffalo.

--The Florida Panthers
recalled forward Chase Balisy from AHL Springfield.

Balisy has appeared in three games with Florida this season, including his first NHL contest on Oct. 28 against the Detroit Red Wings. The 25-year-old native of Fullerton, Calif., has posted four points (two goals, two assists) in 10 games with the Thunderbirds.

Wednesday?s six-pack

Odds to win the college football national title

? Alabama 2-3

? Georgia 5-1

? Clemson 7-1

? Notre Dame 10-1

? Ohio State 12-1

? Wisconsin 16-1

************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??

13) UCLA plays Georgia Tech in basketball Friday night in China. Tuesday, three freshman on UCLA?s team were busted for shoplifting from a Louis Vuitton store in Shanghai.

Was reading some stuff on the Interweb about this; the Chinese system is different from ours- these three nitwits could get 3-10 years in prison for shoplifting. There is no guarantee they?ll be back in the United States anytime soon- the Chinese justice system is slower, they don?t offer bail the way we do.

Donald Trump is going to be in China later this week; now there are worlds colliding, Trump and LaVar Ball in China at the same time, with Ball?s son in dire need of some legal aid.

Put that on your reality show.

12) The Andrew Luck situation in Indianapolis is becoming a huge mess, as Colts owner Jim Irsay is apparently questioning Luck in private conversations, saying Luck?s injury is ?in his head.? Terrific.

Luck first hurt his shoulder in 2015; now he won?t play until next summer, at the earliest.

11) Suns traded Eric Bledsoe to Milwaukee, for Greg Monroe and protected 2018 1st/2nd-round picks. Monroe?s contract is up after this season, so that becomes valuable salary cap space.

10) Detroit Lions didn?t punt in Monday night?s win in Green Bay, the first time Detroit didn?t punt in a game since??..1971.

9) Interesting bit of knowledge from Aaron Rodgers Monday night; he says if you get a broken bone x-rayed a lot to check on progress of healing, the radiation actually slows down the bone?s healing, so Green Bay doctors will not be doing that with Rodgers? clavicle this time around.

8) Green Bay lost RT Bryan Bulaga with a torn ACL in Monday?s loss, as their season crumbles even further??..if I coached the Packers, we?d go no-huddle with Brett Hundley. He looked a lot more comfortable playing at a faster pace.

7) Omri Casspi has played in 507 career NBA games, scoring 8.2 ppg thanks largely to a 36.8% mark from 3-point range; this is his 9th season, but he has never been on a team that made the playoffs. That changes soon; Casspi is on the Warriors this season.

6) Houston Texans signed QB Josh Johnson to be their #3 QB, and waived Matt McGloin.

5) Former Mets? pitching coach Dan Warthen has moved on to the same job with the Texas Rangers.

4) Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf broke his cheekbone, will be out for a couple of months. He got hit in the face with a puck and broke his cheekbone- it hurts me just to type that.

3) Alabama had one basketball player declared ineligible this week; another one had his knee scoped. Going to take some time in November to get a handle on who is and isn?t eligible, with all the off-court nonsense going on.

One of the non-basketball people scheduled to be indicted in SneakerGate won?t be indicted this week, meaning he could be cooperating with authorities, which means more heads could roll, and more players could be declared ineligible.

2) Charlotte?s Malik Monk is 19 years old; he scored 8.8 ppg in 21.3 mpg in his first 10 NBA games. Tuesday night in New York, he scored 21 points in 27 minutes in the Hornets? highly entertaining 118-113 loss to the Knicks. Monk looks like he will be an elite scorer.

1) RIP to the great big league pitcher Roy Halladay 40, who passed away Tuesday in a plane crash in the Gulf of Mexico. Halladay will likely get elected to the Hall of Fame in 2019. He was 203-105, 3.38 in 16 big league seasons, with the Blue Jays/Phillies.

Halladay and Don Larsen threw the only two postseason no-hitters.

STREAKY TEAMS

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Florida 0-3-1-1 past five games overall Colorado Over 7-0-0 past seven overall
Montreal 5-1-0 past six games overall N.Y. Islanders Over 8-1-0 past nine overall
St. Louis 8-2-0 past 10 games overall San Jose Under 6-0-0 past six overall

Sharky's Machine

The San Jose Sharks have been a machine lately...a machine for 'under' results, that is. They have pumped out six consecutive 'under' results in a row, a streak which will be tested when the Tampa Bay Lightning come calling on Wednesday evening. While the 'under' is 3-2 over Tampa Bay's past five outings overall, they're averaging 4.33 goals per game away from home this season. The good news is that the 'under' has connected in Tampa's only two games against Western Conference foes so far. However, the 'over' is 6-1 inthe past seven meetings at SAP Center in San Jose, and 10-3 in the past 13 meetings overall.

Not a Wild Ride

The Minnesota Wild have stumbled out of the chute this season, failing to piece together a win or unbeaten streak of more than two games. The good news is that they have lost in regulation in back-to-back games just once, and they haven't incurred a three-game losing streak all season. They limp into Wednesday's game on a two-game slide, so if trends continue, they'll win in Toronto. And hey, they are a perfect 7-0 in their past seven meetings with the Maple Leafs. Bettors looking for a nice parlay might want to thump the 'under', too, which is 5-0 in the past five meetings at Air Canada Centre, and 10-1 in the past 11 meetings overall in this series.

Wednesday, November 8

It's a light slate on Wednesday, with just three games, and we touched on two of the games already. The nationally-televised game is a Battle of Original Six squads, and one team is struggling while the other is heating up.

Boston has won 13 of their past 17 against teams with a losing record, but they're just 5-14 in their past 19 games against Metropolitan Division foes. In addition, they're a dismal 1-6 in their past seven tries on one day of rest, 0-8 in their past eight following a win and a poor 0-4 in their past four tries against Eastern Conference opponents. Conversely, the Rangers have started to come alive after a brutal start. The Blueshirts have won four in a row overall, four of their past five games at Madison Square Garden and they have taken five in a row against the B's. The home team has cashed in seven of the past nine in this series, with the Bruins going a horrendous 7-19 in their past 26 skates at MSG. The 'over' is 3-1-1 in the past five meetings in Manhattan, and 5-2-1 in the past eight meetings overall in this series.

Thursday, November 9

Two teams playing their fourth game in six days will square off at Bell Centre on Thursday when the Wild battle Les Habitants. The Wild have won four in a row in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation, but the Habs have also excelled in the role. They're 5-2 in their past seven tries in the fourth game of a 4-in-6. And for what it's worth, Minnesota has crushed it on Thursdays, going 17-5 in their past 22 showings on the day. They have also crushed it against the Habs, winning six in a row in this series, although the home team has won eight of the past 10 in this series. Total bettors will like the fact the 'over' is 3-0-2 in the past five meetings in Montreal, and 3-0-1 in the past four overall in the series.

The team with the most points in the Western Conference (as of Wednesday AM) takes on the team with the worst record in the NHL, so if you plan to bet the favorite I hope you're hungry for a ton of chalk. The Coyotes have been brutal this season, and they're not very good in the third game in four days, either, dropping four in a row in the third game of a 3-in-4 situation. The Blues have been tremendous, winning eight of their past nine at home, while excelling in five of their past six against Western Conference foes. And as you might expect, St. Louis has had their way with Arizona, winning five straight home meetings, and 24 of the past 31 overall in the series.

Friday, November 10

The Bruins and Maple Leafs renew acquaintances in Toronto on Friday night, and the Buds look to maintain their dominance against the B's after years of struggles. Last season Toronto turned the tables on Boston, sweeping the regular season series 4-0, outscoring the Bruins 18-9. That was a stark contrast to the year before when Boston polished off Toronto in four of the five meetings. For years the B's dominated this series, and they even took a playoff series from Toronto as well. While Toronto has been much better this season and the last, lately they have struggled with the home cooking. They haven't won in regulation at home in three tries, going 1-2-0-0.

The Islanders skate in the Metroplex on Friday night in what could be a very entertaining game. As of Wednesday morning, the Isles were an impressive 3-0-1 in their past four tries against Western Conference foes, and they have lit the lamp three or more times in eight of their past nine outings. The Stars, on the other hand, have been all over the board. They have scored two or fewer goals in four of their past five outings, but also allowed exactly one goal in three of the past five. The 'under' is 3-1-1 across their past five after a 4-0 over streak. Inconsistency has been the rule for Dallas, a team that entered the season with legitimate Stanley Cup aspirations.

Saturday, November 11

The Avalanche and Senators will do battle in matinee action (1:00 p.m. ET) in Canada's capital city. That's 11:00 a.m. MT, so obviously a very early start for the visitors. Matinee games usually see some tired legs in the beginning, and an 'under' result can follow. This one will be interesting, too, as the Avalanche just traded disgrunted Matt Duchene to Ottawa in a three-way deal involving the Predators. So he'll get a chance to skate against his former club, so that's a storyline to watch, too.

The Canadiens welcome the Sabres to Bell Centre, as Buffalo looks to avenge an Opening Night shootout loss back on Oct. 5. In that game in Buffalo, Phillip Danault scored a shorthanded goal at 8:01 of the third period to force overtime, stunning the Sabres who appeared to have control of the game from the get-go. Robin Lehner was unable to steer the team to a victory, falling in the shootout in a game which was a huge disappointment. A close game is par for the course between these rivals, as three of the past four have been decided by one goal.

NHL roundup: Rangers' rebound continues
November 9, 2017

NEW YORK -- Jimmy Vesey scored twice and Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves as the New York Rangers held off the Boston Bruins 4-2 on Wednesday night.

The win was the Rangers' fifth in a row, the longest active streak in the league. Pavel Buchnevich also scored for New York, and Rick Nash added an empty-net goal. The Rangers (8-7-2) have more wins than regulation losses for the first time this season.

David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron scored for the Bruins, who got 29 saves from Tuukka Rask.

Maple Leafs 4, Wild 2

TORONTO -- Frederik Andersen made 35 saves, and Nazem Kadri, Patrick Marleau, Connor Carrick and Connor Brown scored as Toronto topped Minnesota.

Brown added an assist.

Jason Zucker scored twice for the Wild, and goaltender Devan Dubnyk made 15 stops. Eric Staal had two assists in Minnesota's third consecutive loss.

Lightning 5, Sharks 1

SAN JOSE -- Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov -- the league's Nos. 1 and 2 leading scorers -- enjoyed three-point nights each and Vladislav Namestnikov scored two goals as Tampa Bay snapped San Jose's four-game winning streak.

Stamkos contributed three assists to boost his league-leading point total to 28. Kucherov scored his NHL-leading 15th goal and added two assists as Lightning coach John Cooper earned his 200th win. Jake Dotchin and Slater Koekkoek also scored goals and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 32 saves.

Joonas Donskoi scored for the Sharks.

Best and Worst Bets
November 8, 2017

BEST NHL BETS

As usual, don?t overthink these ones. You might take a hit here and there, but overall, these teams will pay you back handsomely.

Nashville Predators

There?s a lot to love here. The Predators are on a three-game winning streak on the road, and return home where they?ve only lost two games so far this year. They have some great matchups which will reduce the value of the line against them as well. Home stands against a reeling Pittsburgh team and a Washington squad that?s being outscored at a rabid pace. Bet away.

Next Games: vs. Pittsburgh (11/11), vs. Washington (11/14)

New Jersey Devils

The streaking New Jersey Devils are stuck in the gutter right now with a three-game losing skid that has many scurrying away. Not so fast. They have a terrific slate over the next three games which includes pretty bad teams. They host the wobbly Oilers and the downtrodden Panthers before packing up ship and heading to Chicago next week. All three of those teams have leaky defences, and the Devils are still one of the best scoring teams in the NHL. Business is about to pick up for the Devils so hop on board.

Next Games: vs. Edmonton (11/9), vs. Florida (11/10, at Chicago (11/12)

St. Louis Blues

By consensus the Blues are currently the best team in the league, and that?s going to heavily inflate their moneylines. Fortunately, the Blues are also dynamite against the puckline with a league leading 12-4 ATS record. It?s a tough pill to swallow, but the Blues also have an absolutely tempting chunk of schedule coming up. Most times the moneyline is the easier way to bet on NHL hockey, but with the Blues the only way to get value is by taking the spread. In their last four wins, they?ve averaged a +2.25 scoring differential over a 4-1 SU streak.

Next Gams: vs. Arizona (11/9), vs. NYI (11/11), at Calgary (11/13)

WAIT AND SEE

These are the teams that are either worth betting through the weekend or are important stay-away plays. You never know what kind of momentum crops up and a lot of that depends on how they fare in Wednesday?s slate.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs began as the league?s top team with a 7-1 SU outburst that has leveled off tremendously in recent weeks. Since then, the young Maple Leafs have fallen to just 3-6 SU in their last 9 games. A lot of it is that goalie Frederik Andersen has faced more high-quality shots than any other netminder in the league this year. The NHL has a metric for this called ?high-danger shots?, and Andersen has seen 58 this year, letting in 11. Until Toronto can better protect their goalie?s sanity, they?re better to steer clear from despite an inviting schedule.

Next Games: vs. Minnesota (11/8), vs. Boston (11/10), at Boston (11/11)

San Jose Sharks

The Sharks are riding a beautiful four-game win streak heading in to tonight?s clash against the Tampa Bay Lightning, which will set up their momentum for matchups against the Canucks and Kings, who have also been riding pretty high. The Sharks are either going to see their streak continue by beating the Lightning tonight, or they?re a stay-away team until further notice. It?s probably going to be the latter to be honest, which also makes them a bet-against property for most.

Next Games: vs. Tampa (11/8), vs. Vancouver (11/11), at Los Angeles (11/12)

WORST NHL BETS

Just don?t bother until further notice.

Chicago Blackhawks

By far one of the bigger public teams based on roster strength and name value alone, the Chicago Blackhawks have been dismal all season long. They?re just 7-6-2 on the season and are a brutal 7-8 ATS as well. The major problem is that you never know when to expect a good product from them. They recently shutout Philly and Minnesota in back-to-back efforts but lost three games prior to that and just got shutout by Montreal, arguably the worst team in the league. They?re worse than a bet-against feature. They?re a complete stay-away because of how volatile their performances seem to be.

Next Games: at Philadelphia (11/9), at Carolina (11/11) vs. New Jersey (11/12), vs. NYR (11/15)

Pittsburgh Penguins

This is as friendly of a reminder as I can give that the Pittsburgh Penguins simply aren?t worth investing your time and money in to right now. They?re a terrific 5-0-1 at home this season, but have been all over the map in terms of consistency, and are travelling this weekend. Their -1.1 goal differential is one of the biggest shockers of the 2017-18 NHL season so far. Until they show some measure of stability, you can?t trust them.

Next Games: at Washington (11/10), at Nashville (11/11), vs. Buffalo

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Odds to win the college football national title

? Alabama 2-3

? Georgia 5-1

? Clemson 7-1

? Notre Dame 10-1

? Ohio State 12-1

? Wisconsin 16-1

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) Funny/not funny story of the day:

A Qatar Airways pilot was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger found out her husband was cheating on her, leading to a violent reaction in midair; the woman reportedly used her sleeping husband?s finger to unlock his phone and discovered his cheating ways.

Officials say she started fighting with her husband, and also fought with crew members who tried to calm her down.

The flight was forced to land in India on the way to Bali; the woman and her family members were escorted off the plane there.

Morals of this story:
a) Don?t cheat on your spouse.
b) Don?t leave your cellphone within reach of your spouse, especially if you?re cheating.

12) Here is a breakdown of where major league ballplayers come from; players used here are from 2017 Opening Day rosters:
4-year colleges: 43.8%
International: 26.5%
High school: 23.9%
2-year colleges: 5.8%

11) Coming into this year, in five NBA seasons, Detroit?s Andre Drummond was 683-1,793 (38.1%) on the foul line? really bad.

So far this year, Drummond is 30-47 (63.8%) on the charity stripe. I applaud his hard work in the offseason to strengthen his game, but after I added this, he went 0-7 on the line Wednesday against the Pacers, so it is an ongoing struggle.

10) Sounds like Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl is on the way out; one of his assistants (Chuck Person) just got fired because of SneakerGate, and Pearl isn?t cooperating with the school?s internal investigation. That not good.

9) I?m wondering how much Dak Prescott?s success in the NFL helps Mississippi State when they recruit young quarterbacks?

8) DeShaun Watson?s injury figures to help the Cleveland Browns, since they have the Texans? first-round draft pick in April. Now all Cleveland needs is someone in charge who has a clue on how to draft productive players.

7) Vikings activated QB Teddy Bridgewater and put Sam Bradford on IR; both those guys? contracts are up after the season, so Minnesota has some decisions to make, especially since they?re 6-2 and Case Keenum has been playing well for them.

6) Our country does a census every ten years; so, you know, everyone knows how many people live here. Apparently the 2020 census will cost $15.6B, which seems a little excessive, but that is just me.

5) Royals manager Ned Yost, 63, broke his pelvis recently when he fell while trying to fix a tree stand on his property in Georgia.

4) Joe Buck has a good interview show called Undeniable, on the Audience Network (channel 500 on DirecTV); he has had an interesting cross-section of guests, but why in God?s name would he have Robert M Knight on as a guest? Knight is a bully, a creep; he was a really good coach at one time, but that time has passed. Now he adds nothing but negative energy.

3) Minnesota?s Taj Gibson is the first NBA player EVER to wear number 67; turns out he went to PS 67 in Brooklyn. Used to be in high school, no digits above 5 could be on a uniform, to make it easier for refs to signal fouls to the scorer?s table.

2) How many college basketball coaches spent time at Wednesday preaching to their teams about how they represent their families, their friends, their school whenever they go on a road trip?

Three UCLA kids are stuck in China now after they got caught shoplifting from a Louis Vuitton store. There is no ?easy out? for athletes there? this is a foreign country that isn?t real fond of America- they have their own laws, and they?re tougher laws than we have here.

1) Never thought I?d spend an hour in the middle of the night reading up on Chinese law, but that was me at 3am Tuesday night, trying to learn more about the situation the UCLA kids are in. I?m pretty sure Bill Walton is on the mike for UCLA-Georgia Tech game Friday night from China; he is pretty much unfiltered all the time, and he is obviously a UCLA alum, so this broadcast could be interesting, to say the least.
