NHL roundup: Zucker's hat trick lifts Wild
November 9, 2017

LOS ANGELES -- Four Lightning players, including the red-hot Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos, had multi-point games, and Peter Budaj made 22 saves as the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Los Angeles Kings 5-2 on Thursday night.

Stamkos had a goal and an assist, giving him an NHL-high 28 points, while Kucherov recorded three points, including his league-leading 16th goal. Alex Killorn, Victor Hedman and Vladislav Namestnikov also scored for Tampa Bay.

Oscar Fantenberg scored his first career goal and Tyler Toffoli also tallied for Los Angeles. Jonathan Quick made 38 saves for the Kings.

Wild 3, Canadiens 0

MONTREAL -- Jason Zucker recorded a hat trick -- all in the third period -- and Devan Dubnyk made 41 saves as Minnesota snapped a three-game slide.

Dubnyk recorded his first shutout of the season and 25th of his career. Zucker scored a short-handed goal with 17:14 left, had an even-strength 8:37 later and added an empty-netter.

Charlie Lindgren stopped 32 shots in losing for the first time in six starts for Montreal. The Canadiens had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Oilers 3, Devils 2 (OT)

NEWARK, N.J. -- Leon Draisaitl capped an exciting overtime by burying a gorgeous feed from Connor McDavid with 17 seconds remaining for the game-deciding goal to lift Edmonton over New Jersey.

Cory Schneider made 29 saves for the Devils, who have lost four games in a row. New Jersey's Brian Boyle scored his first goal since being diagnosed with a treatable form of cancer two months ago.

Blues 3, Coyotes 2 (SO)

ST. LOUIS -- Brayden Schenn and Alexander Steen scored in the shootout to give St. Louis its 12th straight victory over Arizona.

Backup goaltender Carter Hutton (27 saves) stopped both Coyotes shootout attempts. The Blues rallied to tie the game on a goal from Alex Pietrangelo 5:01 into the third period. Joel Edmundson also scored for St. Louis.

NHL notebook: Shipachyov, Golden Knights officially agree to part ways
November 9, 2017

Forward Vadim Shipachyov is headed back to Russia after working out an agreement with the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday.

Golden Knights general manager George McPhee announced that the sides mutually agreed to place Shipachyov on the NHL voluntary retirement list, which will allow him to return to play in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League.

The 30-year-old Shipachyov made history due to the deal, becoming the first player to retire as a member of the expansion Golden Knights. Vegas, which signed Shipachyov to a two-year, $9 million contract on May 4, will retain his NHL rights until age 35.

Shipachyov scored a goal in his NHL debut against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 15. It was his only point in three games with Vegas before he was sent back to Chicago of the American Hockey League. He finished third in the KHL scoring race last season with 26 goals and 76 points in 50 games. He also had four goals and 15 assists in 17 games during the KHL playoffs.

--The New Jersey Devils activated Kyle Palmieri from injured reserve and placed fellow forward Marcus Johansson on IR.

Palmieri is expected to return to the lineup against the visiting Edmonton Oilers on Thursday after being sidelined six games with a lower-body injury. The 26-year-old New York native, who was initially considered day-to-day, suffered the injury after sliding into the boards during a practice on Oct. 22.

Johansson sustained a concussion just 53 seconds into a game versus the Vancouver Canucks on Nov. 1. The 27-year-old Swede was trailing Vancouver's Brock Boeser behind the net when he appeared to stumble before falling into the boards. Johansson has three goals and two assists in 10 games this season for New Jersey, which acquired him in an offseason trade with the Washington Capitals.

--The Carolina Hurricanes activated forward Lee Stempniak from injured reserve and assigned him to Charlotte of the American Hockey League.

The Hurricanes also sent defenseman Roland McKeown to the Checkers.

Stempniak has been sidelined 13 games due to an upper-body injury. The 34-year-old New York native played in all 82 contests last season, recording 16 goals and 24 assists.

McKeown has notched a pair of assists in two games this season for the Hurricanes.

--The Florida Panthers recalled forward Dryden Hunt from Springfield of the American Hockey League.

Hunt has recorded five goals and three assists in 13 games with the Thunderbirds this season. The 21-year-old British Columbia native ranks second on the team in goals and shots (38).

Hunt collected 31 points in 70 games last season with Springfield. He also had two goals in a two-game stint with Manchester of the ECHL.

NHL notebook: Oilers place F Slepyshev on IR
November 10, 2017

The Edmonton Oilers placed forward Anton Slepyshev on injured reserve Friday.

Slepyshev, 23, was put on IR after suffering an apparent lower-body injury in Thursday night's 3-2 overtime win over the New Jersey Devils. He scored a goal in the second period.

Slepyshev has one goal and an assist in 10 games this season, averaging 11:03 time on ice.

In a corresponding move, the Oilers recalled forward Jesse Puljujarvi from the American Hockey League's Bakersfield Condors. Puljujarvi, 19, has appeared in 10 games with Bakersfield this season, posting one goal, four assists and four penalty minutes.

--The Dallas Stars acquired defenseman Reece Scarlett from the Florida Panthers in exchange for defenseman Ludwig Bystrom, the teams announced.

Scarlett, 24, played in 13 games this season for the Springfield Thunderbirds of the AHL. He recorded a goal and an assist and led Springfield defensemen in penalty minutes (22) and shots on goal (24).

Bystrom, 23, appeared in six games during the 2017-18 season for the Texas Stars, Dallas' top development affiliate in the AHL. He posted one goal with seven shots on goal.

--The Dallas Stars recalled left winger Curtis McKenzie from the Texas Stars of the AHL.

McKenzie, 26, has 11 points (six goals, five assists) in 12 games played for Texas this season. His six goals are tied for the team lead and tied for 10th in the AHL, and he is second on Texas in points. In his last game on Nov. 8 at San Diego, he recorded his second career AHL hat trick and had a career-best five points.

In parts of three seasons with Dallas, McKenzie owns 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) and 120 penalty minutes in 92 regular-season games. Last season, he set career bests with 16 points (six goals, 10 assists) and 72 penalty minutes in 53 games.

--The Minnesota Wild
reassigned goaltender Niklas Svedberg to the Iowa Wild of the AHL.

Svedberg, 28, was recalled under emergency conditions on Wednesday but did not appear in a game with Minnesota. He is 3-6-1 with a 2.84 goals-against average, .904 save percentage and one shutout in 10 games with Iowa this season.

The 6-foot-1, 168-pound native of Sollentuna, Sweden, is 8-5-1 with a 2.31 goals-against average, .920 save percentage and two shutouts in 19 career NHL games, played in parts of two seasons with the Boston Bruins (2013-15).

--The Arizona Coyotes assigned forward Michael Sislo to the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL.

Sislo, 29, was recalled Tuesday from the AHL affiliate but did not appear in a game with the Coyotes.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Sislo has six points (four goals, two assists) and 10 penalty minutes in nine games with Tucson this season. The Wisconsin native owns five points (three goals, two assists) and six penalty minutes in 42 career NHL games with the New Jersey Devils.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

? Four of Louisiana Tech?s nine games were decided by one point.

? Florida allowed 42+ points in back/back games for first time since 1917.

? Northwestern won its last three games, all in OT- first team to do that.

? NC State hasn?t won the ACC basketball tourney since 1987, the regular season since ?89.

? Bad news for Pitt?s hoop team; they were +3 at Navy Friday. Hard to succeed in ACC if you?re an underdog to a service academy.

? Why are people posting NCAA brackets on the first day of games? Why?

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Wrapping up Opening Night in college basketball

13) Indiana State 90, Indiana 69? Sycamores made 17-26 (17-26!!!) behind the arc, getting the Archie Miller era off to a very rough start in Bloomington. Shooting is marketable; if you?re a kid who wants to play ball in college, work your butt off on becoming a great shooter.

12) Texas A&M 88, West Virginia 65? Aggies had their PG and their best player sitting out this game, they trailed by 13 early, but West Virginia struggles to score in half-court offense, and they?re not as deep as the past couple years, so they can?t press as much as they have.

Takeaway from this game; Texas A&M is a top 10 team.

11) Upsets of the Night:
Indiana State (+14.5) 90, Indiana 69
Cal-Riverside (+13.5) 74, California 66
Long Beach State (+13) 83, San Francisco 71
Delaware (+10) 76, Richmond 63
Georgia Southern (+9.5) 85, Wake Forest 83
Niagara (+9) 77, St Bonaventure 75
Miami, OH (+9) 55, Fordham 54

10) Missouri 74, Iowa State 59? Tigers got a huge influx of talent, are an NCAA-caliber team, which has invigorated fan support on campus- this was their first home sellout in four years. Iowa State is in rebuilding mode; they got spanked pretty good here.

Missouri?s highly-touted freshman Michael Porter Jr played only 2 minutes after tweaking a hip injury? he is a kid who is in college a year early, so he can get to the NBA and start earning the big bucks a year earlier than otherwise. Missouri hired his dad as an assistant coach- his brother is a player on the team, too.

9) Charleston 68, Siena 60 OT? Cougars have all five starters back, are expected to win CAA; Saints are in a near total rebuild, so closeness of this game was a surprise.

8) Lamar 74, Tulsa 67? Score one for the Southland Conference; Lamar played only 8 guys, but had 14 offensive boards. AAC is improved with addition of Wichita State; could be a long year for the Golden Hurricane.

7) Kentucky 73, Utah Valley 63? Utah Valley led this game by 9 at the half, but Wildcats didn?t shoot 7-32 in the 2nd half, the way they did in the first half.

WAC?s Wolverines play Duke Saturday afternoon, so a rough 24 hours on the basketball court, an excellent 24 hours for the school?s accountants.

Utah Valley is picked to finish 3rd in an improving WAC- they could be a Cinderella team in March- they?re also the first team in at least 68 years to begin a season with road games at a pair of opponents ranked in the top 5 nationally.

6) Off-court news: BYU?s Nick Emery has withdrawn from school; he will not play for this season, which is VERY bad news for the Cougars.

5) VCU 94, Grambling 65? VCU is a prime mid-major job; this game was the Rams? 100th home sellout in a row. Coaches still jump from VCU to the bigger money jobs, though not sure its a wise move. Wonder if Shaka Smart regrets leaving VCU to go to Texas?

4) South Carolina 73, Wofford 52? Credit to Frank Martin- he went to Wofford for this game, and Terriers sold their gym out. Not lot of Power 5 teams would take on a true road game like this one, against an in-state upstart.

3) Washington 86, Belmont 82? OVC?s Bruins were up 8 at the half, but Huskies? freshman Nowell scored 32 points to bail the home team out.

2) Bad Beat of the Night: Marshall 102, Tenn-Martin (+8.5) 91, in OT? Skyhawks were up 15 at halftime, and still didn?t cover- ouch.

Runner-up was Omaha (+8.5) losing 89-80 in OT at Montana State.

1) UCLA 63, Georgia Tech 60? Bruins never scored fewer than 74 points in a game LY, when Lonzo Ball was their point guard. I?m guessing Steve Alford will be just as happy to get back to this country and resume normal life.

NHL roundup: Rangers win sixth straight
November 11, 2017

NEW YORK -- Rick Nash scored twice as the New York Rangers ran their winning streak to a season-high six games with 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

Nash recorded his first multi-goal game since a hat trick Nov. 21, 2015 at Florida and 63rd overall. It was his 17th two-goal game since joining New York in 2012 and first at home since Feb. 2, 2015. He has five goals in his last four contests.

Pavel Buchnevich also scored a power-play goal and Michael Grabner added an empty-net goal for the Rangers, who also won their fifth straight home game. Henrik Lundqvist made 27 saves for New York.

Jesse Puljujarvi scored in his season debut and Connor McDavid scored on the power play for Edmonton, which was unable to win a season-high third straight game after overtime wins against the New York Islanders and New Jersey.

Senators 4, Avalanche 3

STOCKHOLM -- Mike Hoffman registered two power-play goals and Erik Karlsson added two assists as Ottawa swept Colorado in the NHL Global Series.

The Senators staged a two-goal third period rally as Johnny Oduya's second goal of the season at 7:01 evened the score. Hoffman gave Ottawa the lead with his sixth goal of the season, unassisted on the power play at 13:23 of the third period.

The Avalanche lost their third straight game, receiving goals from Sven Andrighetto, Alexander Kerfoot and Blake Comeau. Jonathan Bernier made 36 saves for Colorado.

Wild 1, Flyers 0

PHILADELPHIA -- Jason Zucker's one-man show continued when he scored in Minnesota's victory over Philadelphia.

Zucker scored his ninth goal of the season, and team-high third game-winner, at 1:08 of the third period to break a scoreless tie. He has scored each of the Wild's last six goals over the span of three games.

Devan Dubnyk stopped 32 shots to earn his second straight shutout as Minnesota won back-to-back games for only the second time this season. Brian Elliott made 26 saves for the Flyers.

Predators 5, Penguins 4 (SO)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Shootout goals by Kevin Fiala and Filip Forsberg lifted Nashville to its fourth straight victory.

Kyle Turris, playing his first game for the Predators after being acquired in a three-way trade with Ottawa and Colorado Sunday, scored as did P.K. Subban, Craig Smith and Calle Jarnkrok. Pekka Rinne made 26 saves for Nashville.

Bryan Rust, Phil Kessel, Jake Guentzel and Brian Dumoulin scored for the Penguins. Tristan Jarry stopped 24 shots in his third career start for Pittsburgh.

Blackhawks 4, Hurricanes 3 (OT)

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Brandon Saad scored with 3:16 left in overtime -- his fifth game-winning goal of the season -- as Chicago rallied twice from two-goal deficits to beat Carolina.

Brock McGinn and Jeff Skinner scored in the first period to put the Hurricanes up 2-0 early, but Carolina and goaltender Scott Darling, making his first appearance against his former team, couldn't hold the lead late.

The Blackhawks trailed 3-1 heading into the third before Alex DeBrincat scored his second of the game early in the period and Gustav Forsling notched his first of the season with 8:31 remaining to tie the score.

Canadiens 2, Sabres 1 (OT)

MONTREAL -- Max Pacioretty scored at 3:08 of overtime to give Montreal the victory over Buffalo.

Andrew Shaw scored for the Canadiens, who are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games, and Charlie Lindgren made 34 saves. Pacioretty broke in alone from the blue line and deked to his backhand for the winner -- his seventh goal of the season.

Ryan O'Reilly scored for the Sabres and Chad Johnson made 27 saves as Buffalo lost for the second straight night. The Sabres were beaten 4-1 to the Florida Panthers at home Friday.

Blue Jackets 2, Red Wings 1 (SO)

DETROIT -- Jack Johnson beat Jimmy Howard in the ninth round of the shootout to earn Columbus a victory over Detroit.

The Blue Jackets halted a four-game losing skid, while the Red Wings' 12-game winning streak in shootouts also was brought to an end. Artemi Panarin opened the scoring 67 seconds into the game for Columbus, while Andreas Athanasiou replied 6:11 into the third period.

Sergei Bobrovsky made 32 saves for the Blue Jackets while Jimmy Howard stopped 31 shots for Detroit.

Maple Leafs 4, Bruins 1

BOSTON -- Backup goaltender Curtis McElhinney, making only his third start of the season, turned aside 38 shots to lead Toronto to a sweep of a home-and-home series with Boston.

James van Riemsdyk, who scored two goals in Friday night's 3-2 overtime win, had a goal and an assist and has 14 goals against the Bruins. It is the most he has against any team, and 24 points in 30 career games against Boston.

Mitch Marner, Morgan Rielly and Patrick Marleau (empty net) also scored for the Leafs, who have won the last six games against Boston. Tuukka Rask gave up two goals on the first five shots and finished with 21 saves for the Bruins.

Islanders 5, Blues 2

ST. LOUIS -- John Tavares ignited a three-goal flurry in the first period with his 13th goal of the season to send New York to victory over St. Louis.

Tavares beat goalie Jake Allen when he was left alone in front of the net at 3:21. Casey Cizikas scored the second goal off a rebound at 10:07, followed by a goal from Jordan Eberle on a 2-on-1 break at 13:18. Thomas Greiss stopped 35 shots for the Islanders. Joshua Ho-Sang and Anders Lee also scored for New York.

Brayden Schenn and Jaden Schwartz scored for the Blues.

Devils 2, Panthers 1

NEWARK, N.J. -- Cory Schneider made 32 saves as New Jersey snapped a four-game slide.

Damon Severson gave the Devils a 1-0 lead when his slap shot deflected off defenseman Keith Yandle and past goaltender James Reimer. Kyle Palmieri doubled New Jersey's lead with his fourth goal of the season on a 5-on-3 power play.

The Panthers cut New Jersey's lead to 2-1 on Nick Bjugstad's goal in the second period. Reimer made 19 saves.
