NHL roundup: Ovechkin's hat trick leads Capitals
November 25, 2017

TORONTO -- Alex Ovechkin scored three goals as the Washington Capitals defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Saturday night.

Jakub Vrana also scored for the Capitals, who have won three games in a row to match their season-best winning streak.

Ovechkin's third goal of the game came at 19:53 of the third period into an empty net. It was his third hat trick of the campaign after combining for seven goals in the first two games of the season. Ovechkin has 576 goals, passing Mike Bossy (573) for 21st all-time.

Defensemen Jake Gardiner and Nikita Zaitsev scored for the Maple Leafs and backup goaltender Curtis McElhinney made 17 saves.

Golden Knights 4, Coyotes 2

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Tomas Nosek scored short-handed to start a Vegas run of three goals scored three different ways in less than two minutes, and the expansion Golden Knights won their fifth in a row.

William Karlsson also stayed hot with his third goal in two games and his seventh during a five-game goal-scoring streak as the Golden Knights improved to 3-0 against the Coyotes and became the first NHL expansion franchise to have a pair of five-game winning streaks in its inaugural season. Vegas also won five straight from Oct. 15-27.

Arizona, down 3-0 after the second period, finally scored against Vegas backup Malcolm Subban when defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored his third goal in five games 21 seconds into the third.

Penguins 5, Lightning 2

PITTSBURGH -- Tristan Jarry made 33 saves for his first career victory, and Phil Kessel and Sidney Crosby each scored twice as Pittsburgh topped Tampa Bay.

Kessel added two assists to reach a team-leading 31 points. He has 16 points in his past 10 games. Crosby, who scored for the second straight game after getting one goal in a 15-game stretch, added an assist as the Penguins ended a season-long three-game losing streak.

Ondrej Palat and Cory Conacher scored for the Lightning, who have incurred three of their five regulation losses in the past four games and are riding their first losing streak of the season at two games.

Canadiens 3, Sabres 0

MONTREAL -- Carey Price returned from a lower-body injury to make 36 saves in his first start since Nov. 2 as Montreal defeated Buffalo.

Jeff Petry, Alex Galchenyuk and Paul Byron scored for the Canadiens. It was Price's 40th career shutout.

Robin Lehner made 23 saves for the Sabres. Buffalo, which snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night, has now lost eight of its last 10 games.

Blues 6, Wild 3

ST. LOUIS -- Jaden Schwartz scored twice, including once in a three-goal first period, to lead St. Louis over Minnesota.

After being shut out by the Nashville Predators on Friday night, the Blues got off to a fast start against the Wild, scoring on three of their first eight shots against goalie Devan Dubnyk, the final one from Schwartz.

The win was the 12th in a row by the Blues on the second night of back-to-back games. The loss was only the second in regulation by the Wild in their last nine games.

Blackhawks 4, Panthers 1

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Jonathan Toews, who had been slumping, posted a season-high three points to lead Chicago past Florida.

Toews, whose only goal in the previous eight games was an empty-netter, scored once and had two assists to lead the Blackhawks. Chicago also got goals from John Hayden, Brandon Saad and Patrick Kane and solid goaltending from Corey Crawford (37 saves).

The Panthers in the third period lost top-line winger Evgenii Dadonov after he was hit high by Chicago defenseman Cody Franson. Jared McCann scored for Florida, which got 35 saves from Roberto Luongo.

Devils 4, Red Wings 3 (OT)

DETROIT -- Brian Gibbons scored 2:32 into overtime to give New Jersey a victory over Detroit.

Taylor Hall had a goal and an assist and centers Brian Boyle and Nico Hischier also scored for the Devils. Keith Kinkaid made 31 saves for the Devils.

David Booth, a Detroit native, scored his first two goals for the Red Wings and right winger Anthony Mantha also scored for the Red Wings. Petr Mrazek stopped 21 shots for the Red Wings before he was replaced by Jimmy Howard in the third period. Howard had seven saves after Mrazek suffered a possible concussion.

Islanders 2, Senators 1

OTTAWA -- Jaroslav Halak made 31 saves as New York continued to roll with a victory over Ottawa.

Anders Lee and Jordan Eberle scored for the Islanders, who have won six of their last seven.

Matt Duchene scored his first goal with the Senators, who dropped their sixth straight. Craig Anderson made 22 saves for Ottawa.

NHL roundup: Luongo reaches milestone for Panthers
November 27, 2017

NEWARK, N.J. -- Roberto Luongo etched his name in the record books Monday night as the Florida Panthers defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-2.

Luongo earned his 200th victory as a member of the Panthers, making him just the second goaltender in NHL history to win 200 games for two different teams, joining Hockey Hall of Famer Patrick Roy. Luongo also won 252 games with the Vancouver Canucks, while Roy earned 289 victories with the Montreal Canadiens and 262 with the Colorado Avalanche.

Luongo, 38, made 23 saves in his milestone victory. His counterpart, Cory Schneider of the Devils, stopped the first 29 shots he faced and finished with 35 saves in the loss.

The Panthers scored the decisive goal at 12:45 of the third period. Jared McCann collected the rebound of his own blocked shot and flipped his fourth goal past Schneider to give Florida a 3-2 lead.

Canadiens 3, Blue Jackets 1

MONTREAL -- Montreal ended Columbus' six-game winning streak as Carey Price made 37 saves in his second game back from injury.

Brendan Gallagher, Jonathan Drouin and Andrew Shaw scored as the Canadiens won consecutive games. Price had a 36-save shutout Saturday in a 3-0 win against the Buffalo Sabres after missing 10 games with a lower-body injury.

Sergei Bobrovsky, who had won the six previous games, made 25 saves for Columbus. Rookie center Pierre-Luc Dubois scored for the Blue Jackets.

Penguins 5, Flyers 4 (OT)

PITTSBURGH -- Sidney Crosby scored at 1:48 of overtime to give Pittsburgh a win over reeling Philadelphia, but the Penguins lost No. 1 goaltender Matt Murray to an apparent leg injury in the second period.

There was no immediate word on Murray's status. Philadelphia has lost eight in a row (0-3-5), its longest losing streak since it lost 10 straight in February 2008.

On the winner, Crosby chipped in a shot by Kris Letang. Pittsburgh won its second in a row. The Penguins tied it 3-3 with goals in the first two minutes of the third period on goals by Patric Hornqvist and Bryan Rust. After Michael Raffl scored for the Flyers, Jake Guentzel forced overtime with his second goal when he tied it at 4-4 with 1:04 left in regulation.

Jets 7, Wild 2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Winnipeg shook off any hangover it had from being shut out for the first time this season, routing goalie Alex Stalock and Minnesota.

The Jets scored seven consecutive goals, with Bryan Little, Joel Armia, Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, Mathieu Perreault, Blake Wheeler and Jacob Trouba connecting after Jason Zucker and Chris Stewart staked the visitors to a 2-0 lead.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 17 shots for his 13th win of the season while Stalock blocked 21 shots in the loss. The Jets lost 4-0 to San Jose on Saturday to finish off a four-game road trip.

Blackhawks 7, Ducks 3

CHICAGO -- Rookie right winger Alex DeBrincat scored his first career hat trick and notched an assist as part of a four-point performance, and Chicago pulled away from Anaheim.

Patrick Sharp, Brandon Saad, Artem Anisimov and Nick Schmaltz also scored as the Blackhawks tallied their second-most goals of the season. Chicago extended its point streak to five games.

Chris Wagner scored twice for the Ducks, who also received a goal from Jakob Silfverberg. Anaheim is winless in its last four games (0-3-1). DeBrincat's outburst made life easier for Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford, who made 25 saves to improve to 11-7-1.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Andrei Vasilevskiy made 34 saves in his second shutout this season, and the Tampa Bay Lightning ended a two-game skid with a 2-0 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night.

Defenseman Dan Girardi and rookie Mikhail Sergachev had goals for the Lightning in the third of a four-game trip. Tampa Bay is off to the best start in franchise history (17-5-2) but had lost consecutive games for the first time this season.

Vasilevskiy leads the NHL with 16 wins and has six career shutouts in 101 starts.

Robin Lehner stopped 24 shots for the Sabres, who were held scoreless for the second straight game and have lost nine of 10.

SHARKS 3, FLYERS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joe Thornton scored the go-ahead goal late in the first period and the Sharks extended the Flyers' longest losing streak in nearly 10 years to nine games.

Chris Tierney and Marc-Edouard Vlasic also scored and Logan Couture had two assists for the Sharks, who kicked off a four-game trip with their second straight win.

Claude Giroux scored 48 seconds in before the Flyers were blanked the rest of the way by backup Aaron Dell, who made 22 saves.

The Flyers are 0-4-5 since their last win, Nov. 9 against Chicago. It's the longest skid since an 0-8-2 stretch in February 2008.

ISLANDERS 5, CANUCKS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Calvin de Haan and Jordan Eberle scored goals one minute apart in the first period to spark the Islanders to a win over the Canucks.

Eberle now has goals in three straight games and recorded his 400th NHL point as New York improved to 15-7-2 overall and 8-0-2 at Barclays Center.

Andrew Ladd, Anders Lee and John Tavares also scored goals for New York, and rookie center Mathew Barzal recorded the primary assist on Eberle's goal.

Jaroslav Halak made 22 saves for the Islanders.

Vancouver dropped to 11-10-4 with its third straight loss, all to the three teams in the New York City metropolitan area.

Thomas Vanek and Bo Horvat scored for the Canucks, while Anders Nilsson stopped 31 shots.

BLUE JACKETS 3, HURRICANES 2, SO

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Cam Atkinson and Artemi Panarin scored in the shootout to give the Blue Jackets a win over the Hurricanes.

Zach Werenski had a goal and an assist, and Josh Anderson also scored for the Blue Jackets, who won their first game after their season-best six-game winning streak ended. Columbus has won five in a row at home.

Joonas Korpisalo, making a rare start in place of Sergei Bobrovsky, made 29 saves in regulation and overtime for the Blue Jackets. Bobrovsky leads the league in save percentage and goals-against average and got his first night off in three weeks as Korpisalo made his fifth start.

PANTHERS 5, RANGERS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Denis Malgin scored with 1:09 left and the Panthers recovered after giving up two three-goal leads to beat the Rangers.

Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal and an assist, and Aleksander Barkov, Jamie McGinn and Micheal Haley also scored for Florida. James Reimer finished with 33 saves.

On the winning goal, Malgin fired a shot from the inside edge of the left circle to beat Rangers goalie Ondrej Pavelec for his first of the season.

Chris Kreider had two goals and an assist, Pavel Buchnevich added a goal and two assists, and J.T. Miller also scored for the Rangers, who snapped an eight-game winning streak at home and lost for just the third time in their last 13 games overall. David Desharnais had three assist to help New York tie it after trailing 3-0 and 4-1.

KINGS 4, RED WINGS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Dustin Brown and Anze Kopitar scored 2:10 apart late in the second period to put the Kings ahead and they went on to beat the Red Wings.

Jonathan Quick made 23 saves, including some spectacular stops in the second period that kept the Kings within a goal.

His teammates took advantage.

After Brown and Kopitar puts the Kings ahead, they pulled away in the third. Adrian Kempe scored early in the period and Kopitar's second goal of the game gave Los Angeles a three-goal cushion with 7-plus minutes left.

The Red Wings started strong, but couldn't recover when they failed to get another shot past Quick.

Detroit's Mike Green broke a scoreless tie late in the second period and Jimmy Howard finished with 32 saves.

PREDATORS 3, BLACKHAWKS 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Pekka Rinne made 37 saves to lead the Predators to a win over the Blackhawks.

Filip Forsberg, Austin Watson and Roman Josi scored goals for the Predators, who have won 10 of 12.

Tommy Wingels and Lance Bouma had the goals for Chicago, which had its two-game winning streak snapped.

With Nashville clinging to a one-goal lead late in the third, Rinne made his best save of the night when he denied Nick Schmaltz's backhand from just outside the crease on a shorthanded breakaway. He later denied WIngels with the left pad in the game's final minute.

OILERS 3, COYOTES 2, OT

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored 4:20 into overtime as the Oilers defeated the Coyotes for their second win in a row.

Zack Kassian and Matt Benning also scored for the Oilers, who have only won two straight games on one other occasion all season.

Christian Fischer and Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored for the Coyotes, who have lost three of their last four games.

Fischer showed a great second effort to lift his own rebound over outstretched Oilers goalie Cam Talbot during a scramble in front to give Arizona an early lead. It was the 17th time in 25 games this season that Edmonton has trailed 1-0.

Kassian finally converted on one of many breakaways this season, beating Coyotes goalie Scott Wedgewood for his first goal of the campaign to tie the game 1-1 with 3:30 left in the first.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, FLAMES 1

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Roman Polak scored his first goal of the season and Frederik Andersen made 19 saves as the Maple Leafs beat the Flames.

The game was scoreless until late in the first period when Polak gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish with a fluke goal that pinballed off two Flames on the way into the net.

Polak's slap shot from the blue line first deflected off Mark Jankowski and then, as it was going well wide of the Calgary net, it deflected off the knee of Travis Hamonic and straight past goaltender Mike Smith.

Nikita Zaitsev, Nazem Kadri and Leo Komarov, with an empty-netter, also scored for Toronto.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Some trends for Week 12 of the NFL

? Bears failed to cover last five games as a home favorite.

? Atlanta is 6-15 in its last 21 games as a home favorite.

? Bengals covered six of last seven tries as a home underdog.

? Denver is 0-7 vs spread the last seven weeks.

? Carolina covered six of its last eight games.

? Cowboys are 8-20 vs spread as a divisional home favorite.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??..

13) Eli Manning will take a seat Sunday and Geno Smith will start for the Giants Sunday in Oakland. Last Giants? QB to start instead of Manning? Hall of Famer Kurt Warner, in 2004.

12) Auburn beat Georgia a few weeks ago, now the teams meet again in SEC title game; the surprising fact is this? last six SEC title games that were rematches, the team that won the first meeting also won the second meeting. I wouldn?t have guessed that.

11) Duke football coach David Cutcliffe turned down Tennessee? Really? Cutcliffe was the Vols? OC during the Peyton Manning years, the Ole Miss coach during the Eli Manning years, but he has found the Duke job as a good place to work.

Ole Miss ran Cutcliffe off despite the Rebels going 44-29 (25-23 in SEC games) under his tutelage. Tennessee is a bigger fishbowl than Ole Miss, so Cutcliffe said no thanks.

10) Dak Prescott will get very rich someday, in part because of the training he got playing for Dan Mullen at Mississippi State.

Dan Mullen just got really rich, in part of because of how well Prescott played for him at Miss State. Hopefully the two of them send each other Christmas cards and thank each other, maybe even exchange expensive gifts.

9) Blake Griffin sprained his MCL, is likely out 6-8 weeks for the Clippers, who are relieved the injury wasn?t worse.

8) Lonzo Ball shot 41.2% on 3?s last year, 67.3% on foul line, 73% inside the arc, so I refuse to say ?He can?t shoot?, but he ain?t shooting well this year (24.5% of 3?s, 42.9% of FT?s, 30.9% inside arc). Whether his problem is mental or physical, who knows?

Don MacLean, who does studio work on Clipper games, was saying Monday night that Ball?s shooting problem is a mechanical flaw that won?t be easy to fix. Seeing how Ball?s father is also his trainer, we?ll see if the problem gets fixed.

7) Virginia 49, Wisconsin 37? Why would ESPN match these two teams for a TV game? They both play slowish, unattractive styles; at least they were smart enough to put the game up against Monday Night Football, so we could easily pass on watching it.

6) Actors Matt Damon/Edward Norton made the great poker movie Rounders in 1998; that summer, both actors played for real in the main event at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

Damon got knocked out of the Main Event by poker legend Doyle Brunson; Damon had pocket kings, but Brunson had pocket aces. Would be fun if there was video of that hand.

5) Daytime TV is generally horrible, but SEC Network has an hour-long show called Thinking Out Loud which is worth watching. Think it is on Monday and Friday for an hour, with Greg McElroy and Marcus Spears talking mostly about college football.

If ESPN was smart, they?d give those two their own talk show on a regular basis; they?re smart, have a sense of humor and are fun to listen to.

4) I?m reading baseball articles and I see these names mentioned as trade chips this winter:

Stanton-Abreu-Ozuna-Santana. Good grief, they?re all on my fantasy team. Had a good season last year, I don?t need lot of guys changing teams, though if one or two of them got traded to the Phillies and that tiny ballpark, I wouldn?t mind.

3) Jimmy Garoppolo and Geno Smith will be the 50/51st QB?s to start an NFL game this year; all of last year, 54 different quarterbacks started a game.

2) ESPN?s Herm Edwards interviewed for the Arizona State coaching job, which is interesting and could signal that Herm is gone from ESPN when their next round of personnel cuts happen.

1) Ole Miss gave interim football coach Matt Luke the full-time head coaching job- they posted his contract on Twitter. Here are some particulars of his contract:

? Luke?s salary is $12.6M, over four years (2018-21)
? Luke gets $150,000 for SEC every win Ole Miss gets, starting with Rebels? 3rd SEC win each year.
? $150,000 for getting to the SEC title game, $400,000 if he wins the title game.
? His bowl bonus is anywhere from $50,000-$250,000, depending on the bowl?s level.
? $500,000 for getting the national playoff semifinals, $1M for winning national title.

? Just for comedy, he gets $100,000 if Ole Miss players have an APR score of 975 or better. Getting to the SEC title game is worth $150,000.

? Ole Miss has a salary pool of $5,135,000 to pay ten assistant coaches.
? They have a salary pool of $2,100,000 to staff strength conditioning crew, video analysts, football operations and other miscellaneous support staff.

College sports is big business, for sure.
