NHL roundup: Grabner's hat trick highlights Rangers' win
December 1, 2017

NEW YORK -- Henrik Lundqvist overcame allowing an early goal to make 32 saves and Michael Grabner had a hat trick as the New York Rangers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 at Madison Square Garden on Friday night.

Two of Grabner's three goals were scored into an empty net in the final minutes. David Desharnais and Paul Carey also scored to give the Rangers their fifth win in six games.

The Hurricanes have lost four of five. Justin Williams scored the team's lone goal and Scott Darling stopped 21 of 24 shots to take the loss.

Grabner, who scored his first goal in the second period, iced the game with his 12th and 13th goals of the season, both into empty nets. He escaped along the right wing in the neutral zone, took a pass from defenseman Ryan McDonagh and scored into an empty net with 2:13 remaining, then collected a bouncing puck and chipped into the net with 1:12 remaining.

Jets 7, Golden Knights 4

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Winnipeg right winger Patrik Laine had a goal and two assists, Kyle Connor chipped in with a pair of goals and Jets also got singles from Nikolaj Ehlers, Matt Hendricks, Tyler Myers, Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor in the win over the visiting Golden Knights.

Vegas replied with singles from William Karlsson, Cody Eakin and Erik Haula.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 27 shots in the Jets net for his 14th win of the season while Maxime Lagace stopped 31 at the other end of the ice for the Golden Knights.

Sharks 2, Panthers 1

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Chris Tierney scored a tiebreaking goal with 12:45 left in the third period as San Jose defeated Florida.

Tierney scored on a sharp-angle rebound off his backhand for his seventh goal of the season.

The game's other goals were scored by Florida's Derek MacKenzie and San Jose's Joe Pavelski.

Backup Sharks goalie Aaron Dell made 38 saves for his second straight win this week. He is 15-9-2 in his two years in the NHL, and this was the 17th time this season the Sharks allowed two goals or less.

The Sharks are 4-0-1 in their past five games, four of which were on the road. Overall this season, the Sharks are 7-2-1 on the road.

Kings 4, Blues 1

ST. LOUIS -- Tyler Toffoli scored a pair of goals to lead Los Angeles to its fourth consecutive win.

Toffoli put the Kings in front just 1:43 into the game when he skated past defenseman Vince Dunn and beat goalie Carter Hutton. He added a second goal, his 13th of the season, midway through the third period after a steal by Tanner Pearson.

Anze Kopitar followed Toffoli's first goal with a goal off a rebound of a shot by Alex Iafallo at 6:02 of the first period, his 13th of the season. The two goals came on the Kings' first five shots.

Senators 6, Islanders 5

NEW YORK -- Ryan Dzingel's second goal of the game snapped a tie and lifted Ottawa to a wild win over New York.

Dzingel, who opened the scoring in the first period, scored 1:38 into the third to cap a back-and-forth affair that featured four ties and two lead changes.

Zack Smith, Bobby Ryan, Thomas Chabot and Mike Hoffman also scored for the Senators, who snapped a six-game losing streak -- their longest since an 0-6-1 skid during the 2011-12 season.

Goalie Mike Condon stopped all 19 shots he faced in relief of Craig Anderson, who allowed five goals on 18 shots.

Blue Jackets 4, Ducks 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Josh Anderson scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period and Columbus held on for a win over Anaheim.

In addition to his 10th goal of the season with 4:54 left in the third, Anderson also had two assists to help the Blue Jackets to their eighth win in the past nine games. Anderson extended his points streak to a career-high five games.

NHL notebook: Blackhawks G Crawford placed on IR
December 1, 2017

Chicago Blackhawks star goaltender Corey Crawford was placed on injured reserve Friday due to an undisclosed injury.

The move occurred after Crawford stopped 31 of 35 shots in Thursday's 4-3 overtime loss against the Dallas Stars. Crawford is required to miss at least one week by being placed on IR.

The team didn't reveal details about the injury, but Crawford visibly struggled to get back on his feet after making a save during the third period.

Crawford is 11-7-2 with a 2.29 goals-against average and .930 save percentage this season. The 32-year-old has won 30 or more games in six of the past seven seasons and has a career 2.37 GAA.

Chicago recalled goaltender Jean-Francois Berube from Rockford of the American Hockey League to fill the roster opening

--The Edmonton Oilers claimed forward Nathan Walker off waivers from the Washington Capitals.

Walker, 23, appeared in seven games for the Capitals in his rookie season, posting one goal and four penalty minutes.

He became the first Australian to play in an NHL game and he scored a goal in his debut on Oct. 7 against the Montreal Canadiens. The Capitals selected him in the third round in 2014.

The Oilers also placed forward Iiro Pakarinen on waivers for the purpose of assignment.

--The Pittsburgh Penguins
sent forward Josh Archibald to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League on a conditioning assignment.

Archibald, 25, has played in just two games for the Penguins this season, averaging 10:49 time on ice. He scored three goals in 10 games last season.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??..

13) When someone throws their Christmas tree out on the front lawn on December 1st, there is a pretty good chance that person is moving soon.

Thats how reporters were clued in that Jimbo Fi$her was bolting Florida State for the greener pa$ture$ of Texa$ A&M. You mock my dollar signs? Fi$her got $75M guaranteed for ten year$.

Seminoles need to beat UL-Monroe Saturday to go to a bowl; Fi$her is gone, DL coach Odell Higgins is the interim coach for Saturday and if they win, the bowl game.

12) So now Oregon?s Willie Taggert is the favorite for the Florida State job; FSU would be his third job in three years- he went from South Florida to Oregon last year.

If Taggert bolts Oregon, the Ducks would have their third coach in three years in 2018.

11) Then there is Tennessee, which still hasn?t hired a football coach and now they also have to hire a new athletic director. Pretty soon they also may need a new chancellor.

Good luck hiring a quality coach when the jackasses on Twitter have veto power over which coach gets hired, which is what happened earlier this week with the Greg Schiano debacle.

10) Interesting story on the TheMMQB.com on how the Buffalo Bills have a different player stand in front of the team every week and talk about what motivates him and what people have been the driving forces in their lives.

It allows players to get to know their teammates better and hopefully bonds them tighter as a team. An unusual approach; if the Bills make the playoffs, more teams will do it.

9) Six Sutter brothers played in the NHL; they combined to score 2,936 points, which is the NHL record for most points scored by a family.

Two Gretzky brothers played in the NHL; Brent Gretzky had one goal, three assists. Wayne Gretzky scored the rest of the family?s 2,861 points.

8) Sounds like major league baseball might add expansion teams in Portland/Montreal, go to 32 teams, four geographically-based divisions with a 156-game schedule.

7) Charlie Hoffman made 12 birdies Friday, shot a 63 and leads the Hero World Challenge; I?m only telling you because ESPN won?t report anything except what Eldrick Woods shoots. Guy makes 12 birdies out of 18 holes, it deserves some publicity.

6) Shohei Ohtani has until December 22 to sign with a major league team; there are reports from a Japanese newspaper that the Padres are one of his final five teams. Ohtani wants to hit and pitch in the majors and there are reports he wants to play on a team that doesn?t already have a Japanese player on it? no idea why.

5) Purdue 80, Maryland 75? NFL referee Gene Steratore worked this game; wonder if he has the Ravens? game in Baltimore Sunday- would make his travel simpler.

4) Grambling 64, Georgia Tech 63? Awful loss for the Yellow Jackets; Grambling was ranked #338 before this game. Grambling had lost 63 games in a row against Power 5 teams, dating back 21 years. Yikes.

3) USC 31, Stanford 28? Wow, Sam Darnold has an interesting decision ahead of him after the Trojans? bowl game; go play pro football and get rich, or stay in college and prepare for the NFL for one more season? If the Browns go 0-16, I?m guessing he stays at USC.

2) One of the themes of Moneyball was that Billy Beane ?wanted to change the game? as far as how baseball front offices did their jobs.

Looks like he?s accomplished his goal; he?s turned front offices against the manager?s job and turned it into a middle-manager, button-pusher type that they think almost anyone can do.

Bronx Bombers named Aaron Boone manager, someone who has never managed in the major leagues before. You really think managing a baseball team in New York City is an entry-level job? The amount of media scrutiny that goes on? A first-timer is a good choice?

I could care less if the Bronx Bombers ever win another game; just seems to me that firing Joe Girardi for someone who is a rookie manager is an incredibly bad idea.

1) Derek Jeter is doing a hell of a job as Marlins? owner; his latest fiasco (from CBS Sports):

?Miami Marlins fired a veteran scout a few days after he underwent colon cancer surgery. What?s worse, the scout received the phone call to learn of his dismissal while laying in the hospital waiting on a kidney transplant.?

Classy, great people skills; how much money could the scout possibly be making?

Trading Giancarlo Stanton in a salary dump will be Jeter?s next move; because they?re dumping salary, the Marlins will trade a guy who hit 59 homers and get very little back, in way of players.

NHL roundup: Canadiens rout Red Wings 10-1 for fifth straight victory
December 2, 2017

MONTREAL -- Paul Byron scored three goals to help the Montreal Canadiens to their fifth straight win, a 10-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night.

Carey Price, who has been in goal for Montreal's five wins since returning from a lower-body injury, made 21 saves.

Nicolas Deslauriers, Jacob de la Rose, Charles Hudon, Brendan Gallagher, Jordie Benn, Daniel Carr and Andrew Shaw also scored for the Canadiens. Alex Galchenyuk had four assists.

Petr Mrazek gave up five goals on 25 shots for Detroit and was replaced by Jimmy Howard, who gave up five goals on nine shots. Andreas Athanasiou scored his sixth goal of the season for the Red Wings, who lost their seventh straight (0-4-3).

Lightning 5, Sharks 2

TAMPA, Fla. -- Tyler Johnson broke out of a month-long scoring slump with two goals to lead Tampa Bay past San Jose.

Johnson scored twice in the third period to break a tie and end a 15-game goalless drought dating to Oct. 24 at Carolina. Nikita Kucherov also scored twice to tie Alex Ovechkin for the league lead with 19 as the Lightning swept the two-game season series.

Andrei Vasilevskiy finished with 25 saves for his league-leading 17th victory of the season. Barclay Goodrow and Justin Braun scored for the Sharks, who saw a three-game winning streak come to an end. San Jose was 4-0-2 in its last six games.

Penguins 5, Sabres 1

PITTSBURGH -- Five players scored as Pittsburgh won its season-high fourth straight game with a rout of Buffalo.

The Penguins received goals from Evgeni Malkin, Carl Hagelin, Patric Hornqvist, Phil Kessel and Sidney Crosby to produce a 15-game point streak (14-0-1) and eight-game home win streak against Buffalo.

Jason Pominville scored for Buffalo, which has lost four straight -- the first three by shutout -- and is 1-9-2 in its last 12 games. Pittsburgh rookie Tristan Jarry, playing on consecutive nights, stopped 32 shots while the Sabres' Chad Johnson made 24 saves.

Capitals 4, Blue Jackets 3

WASHINGTON -- Alexander Ovechkin scored a tiebreaking power-play goal in the final minute of the second period and Washington defeated Columbus.

The 577th goal of Ovechkin's career ties him with Mark Recchi for 20th place on the all-time list, while the 218th power-play tally of his career moves Ovechkin into sole possession of 10th place on that list. Braden Holtby made 32 saves for the Capitals.

Evegny Kuznetsov, Alex Chiasson and Brett Connolly also scored for Washington. Matt Calvert and Artemi Panarin scored and Sergei Bobrovsky made 19 saves for the Blue Jackets.

Wild 2, Blues 1 (OT)

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Matt Dumba scored 39 seconds into overtime to send Minnesota past St. Louis.

Dumba poked home a rebound after Charlie Coyle's initial shot was stopped by goaltender Jake Allen (23 saves). Ryan Suter added his fourth goal of the season and Devan Dubnyk made 41 saves for the Wild, who avenged a 6-3 loss to the Blues last week.

Patrik Berglund scored his second goal in as many contests for St. Louis, who has four of its past five games. The Blues had been 4-0-0 in the second game of back-to-back contests this season and won 12 straight in such situations before losing to Los Angeles and Minnesota the past two nights.

Hurricanes 3, Panthers 2 (OT)

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Noah Hanifin scored with two seconds left in overtime and Cam Ward stopped 37 shots to move within one victory of 300 for his career as Carolina defeated Florida.

Jeff Skinner's team-leading 10th goal of the season midway through the third period gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead and snapped Skinner's eight-game streak without a goal after he registered nine over a 15-game span. Ward made 37 saves.

Aleksander Barkov scored his ninth of the season with 1:56 left, seconds after Carolina had pulled goaltender James Reimer for an extra attacker. Reimer made 44 saves.

Bruins 3, Flyers 0

PHILADELPHIA -- Brad Marchand returned from a jolting open-ice hit to score one goal and assist on another to lead Boston over slumping Philadelphia.

Tuukka Rask turned aside all 28 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season and the 38th of his career. Ryan Spooner and David Pastrnak also scored even-strength goals for the Bruins, who won for the sixth time in seven games.

The Flyers lost their 10th straight game (0-5-5) while suffering their sixth shutout of the season. The longest they have ever gone without a win came in the 1998-99 season, when they went 0-8-4. Brian Elliott made 24 saves.

Canucks 2, Maple Leafs 1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Markus Granlund and Alex Edler scored first-period goals as Vancouver hung on to defeat Toronto.

Jacob Markstrom made 35 saves for the Canucks, who won their second straight. Vancouver was outshot 25-9 over the final two periods.

James van Riemsdyk scored for the Maple Leafs, who lost for only the fourth time in 13 games. Frederik Andersen stopped 24 shots for Toronto.
