Bozak scores twice, Maple Leafs jump Pens early in 4-3 win
December 9, 2017

PITTSBURGH (AP) Tyler Bozak scored two goals and the Toronto Maple Leafs got off to a fast start in a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night.

Conner Brown and James van Riemsdyk scored in the first 1:42 of the game, and Bozak also scored in the first period. Mitch Marner had three assists for the Maple Leafs, who have won five of seven.

Frederik Andersen stopped 33 shots for his 50th win with the Maple Leafs. Andersen has won 11 of his last 15 starts.

Evgeni Malkin scored his ninth goal on the power play and Riley Sheahan got his third for Pittsburgh. Sidney Crosby scored his 13th with 2:48 to play, but the Penguins couldn't tie it. Pittsburgh had won five of six.

LIGHTNING 4, JETS 3, OT

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Brayden Point scored 36 seconds into overtime and Tampa Bay completed a perfect four-game homestand.

Point eluded a Winnipeg defender and put back a backhander past Connor Hellebuyck for the win.

Yanni Gourde, Mikhail Sergachev and Nikita Kucherov also scored for Tampa Bay, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 17 saves.

Andrew Copp, Kyle Connors and Nikolaj Ehlers scored for Winnipeg, which has lost three straight for the first time this season. Hellebuyck stopped 24 shots.

RANGERS 5, DEVILS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Mats Zuccarello scored twice, Henrik Lundqvist stopped 26 shots and New York won for the 10th time in its last 11 at home.

Jimmy Vesey, Jesper Fast and Kevin Hayes also scored for the Rangers, and Rick Nash had two assists.

Damon Severson and Miles Wood scored for New Jersey, which lost its second straight to a Metropolitan Division opponent. Keith Kinkaid finished with 34 saves.

After Severson cut the Rangers' lead to 2-1 midway through the middle period, he made a costly turnover while New Jersey was on a power play, leading to Zuccarello's short-handed tally less than three minutes later. It gave Zuccarello at least a point in seven of the last nine games.

Zuccarello made it 4-1 off a cross-ice pass from J.T. Miller at 6:21 of the third.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 5, STARS 3

DALLAS (AP) - David Perron, Reilly Smith and Brayden McNabb scored in a span of 3:37 during the second period, and Vegas held off Dallas for its fourth straight victory.

The Stars have lost three in a row following a five-game winning streak.

Perron's power-play goal at 4:58 broke a 1-all tie and McNabb scored at 8:35 for a 4-2 lead. Alex Tuch had the Golden Knights' first goal in the first period, and Erik Haula scored into an empty net with 42 seconds left.

Maxime Lagace made 36 saves for Vegas. He allowed goals by Tyler Pitlick in the first period, Jason Spezza in the second and Jamie Benn in the third but held Dallas scoreless for the final 15:43.

BRUINS 3, ISLANDERS 1

BOSTON (AP) - Brad Marchand and Jake DeBrusk scored, Tuukka Rask stopped 30 shots and Boston beat New York.

Danton Heinen added an empty-net goal, and Torey Krug and David Pastrnak each had two assists for the Bruins, who won for the eighth time in 10 games.

Anders Lee scored and Jaroslav Halak made 29 saves for New York, which has lost four of five.

Rask earned his fourth straight win after struggling to a 3-8-2 start this season.

BLUES 6, RED WINGS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Jaden Schwartz knocked home his own rebound and St. Louis scored four times on only five shots in beating Detroit.

Vladimir Sobotka, Scottie Upshall, Jay Bouwmeester, Brayden Schenn and Dmitrij Jaskin also had goals for the Blues in their third straight victory. Jake Allen made 28 saves.

Frans Nielsen scored for the Red Wings, who have won just once in their last eight games.

AVALANCHE 7, PANTHERS 3

NHL notebook: Ankle injury sidelines Blues' Schwartz
December 10, 2017

The St. Louis Blues placed forward Jaden Schwartz on injured reserve with a right ankle injury and he will be re-evaluated in six weeks, the team announced Sunday.

Schwartz sustained the injury when he blocked a shot in the Blues' 6-1 win over the Red Wings on Saturday in Detroit. He had to be helped off the ice after suffering the injury, which occurred late in the first period, and was not able to put any pressure on his right leg.

Schwartz, 25, did not return for the final two periods and the Blues said after the game that initial X-rays were negative. Before having to leave the game, Schwartz scored his 14th goal of the season.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Schwartz shares ninth in the NHL overall with 35 points, including 21 assists, and ranks second with a plus-23 rating through 30 games this season.

--The Vegas Golden Knights activated three-time Stanley Cup winner Marc-Andre Fleury from injured reserve and assigned fellow goaltender Maxime Lagace to Chicago of the American Hockey League.

Fleury has been sidelined since Oct. 14 with a concussion. The 33-year-old Quebec native recorded a 3-1-0 mark with a 2.48 goals-against average and .925 save percentage in four games this season.

Lagace owned a 6-6-1 record with a 3.79 GAA and .872 save percentage in 14 appearances this season. He recorded a career-high 36 saves in Vegas' 5-3 win over the Dallas Stars on Saturday.

--The Florida Panthers plan to retire No. 37 in honor of franchise founder and former owner H. Wayne Huizenga, the team announced.

Panthers owner Vincent Viola made the announcement on the 25th anniversary since the club was awarded a hockey franchise. The ceremony will take place on Jan. 19 at BB&T Center when the Panthers host the expansion Vegas Golden Knights.

The No. 37 was selected by the Huizenga family in recognition of Wayne's birth year and lucky number.

The No. 37 will be the second number retired by the franchise and both honor front office members. In October 2010, the organization raised No. 93 to the rafters in honor of William A. Torrey, the former Panthers president and current special advisor to the general manager.

--The Dallas Stars recalled forward Jason Dickinson from the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League.

Dickinson, 22, has appeared in four games with Dallas this season, registering two shots and four penalty minutes. In 20 games with Texas, he has 14 points (13 goals, one assist). His 13 goals are tied for second in the AHL.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound native of Georgetown, Ontario, was originally selected by Dallas in the first round (29th overall) of the 2013 NHL draft.

NHL roundup: Isles snap skid
December 11, 2017

NEW YORK -- Andrew Ladd and John Tavares scored less than a minute apart early in the second period Monday night as the New York Islanders snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Washington Capitals at Barclays Center.

Brock Nelson scored in the first period for the Islanders, who vaulted past the idle New Jersey Devils into a tie for second place in the Metropolitan Division with the Capitals. Jaroslav Halak recorded 31 saves.

Dmitry Orlov scored in the third period for the Capitals, who had their season-high, four-game winning streak halted as they lost for the second time in the past nine games (7-2-0). Braden Holtby made nine saves before being chased after Tavares' goal. Philipp Grubauer stopped all 17 shots he faced.

Avalanche 2, Penguins 1

PITTSBURGH -- Defenseman Mark Barberio's goal at 6:17 of the third period broke a scoreless tie, and Colorado downed Pittsburgh.

Blake Comeau added an empty-net goal with 1:29 left before Phil Kessel broke up what would have been a shutout by Avalanche goaltender Jonathan Bernier with 11.8 seconds left.

Bernier made 39 saves. Tristan Jarry stopped 26 shots for the Penguins and is on a 1-2-0 stretch plus a no-decision after getting pulled following one period Saturday.

Stars 2, Rangers 1 (SO)

NEW YORK -- Jason Spezza scored the decisive goal in the third round of a shootout as Dallas edged New York.

The Stars, who snapped their second three-game losing streak of the season, got a goal from Julius Honka.

The Rangers' Rick Nash forced overtime by scoring his eighth goal of the season on a deflection with 3:41 remaining in regulation.

Panthers 2, Red Wings 1 (OT)

DETROIT -- Mike Matheson scored 2:02 into overtime as Florida rallied past Detroit.

After Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard sprawled to make a save on Nick Bjugstad, Matheson pounded a rebound into the net for his first goal of the season.

Vincent Trocheck also scored for the Panthers, while Henrik Zetterberg had the Red Wings' goal.

Jets 5, Canucks 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Mathieu Perreault scored two goals, including what proved to be the game-winner, and assisted on an insurance goal to help Winnipeg beat Vancouver.

Nikolaj Ehlers, Josh Morrissey and Dmitry Kulikov also scored for the Jets.

The Canucks, who lost their third straight, got a goal from rookie Brock Boeser, his team-leading 16th of the season. Boeser matched Tony Granato's 1988-89 mark for the most goals by a U.S.-born rookie through his first 30 games.
