Preview: Sabres (10-20) at Rangers (20-13)
Date: January 01, 2018 1:00 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- The Buffalo Sabres and the New York Rangers take center stage for the National Hockey League on New Year's Day, meeting outdoors at Citi Field for the league's 10th annual Winter Classic.

The Sabres will be the home team when the teams take the ice at the home of the New York Mets in Queens.

Though the clubs are headed in opposite directions this season, players from both sides are excited for the opportunity to take part in the NHL's showcase event.

"It'll definitely be a cool experience," said veteran defenseman Zach Bogosian, whose Sabres (10-20-8) reside in last place in the Eastern Conference. "It'll be pretty cool to know everyone is watching. It's been awesome to be part of the experience, and I'm looking forward to (Monday)."

Unlike the struggling Sabres, the Rangers (20-13-5) are in the thick of the playoff race in the East. Their enthusiasm for the Winter Classic was equally evident after practicing outdoors on Sunday afternoon.

"Being here now really gets the excitement started," Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh said. "It's hard to talk about during the season when it's so far away, but now finally being here, you see the stadium, you see the spectacle that it is, it's a special moment in the season, and we're very fortunate to get the opportunity to play in it."

This is the second Winter Classic appearance for each team.

The Sabres hosted the very first one on Jan. 1, 2008, a 2-1 shootout loss to the Penguins at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby scored the game-winner.

The Rangers defeated the Flyers 3-2 on Jan. 2, 2012, at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

In fact, the Rangers have never lost an outdoor game.

Along with the 2012 Winter Classic victory, the Rangers also beat the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders in consecutive Stadium Series contests at Yankee Stadium in 2014.

Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist is a perfect 3-0-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage in outdoor games. His three outdoor wins are more than any goaltender in league history.

"It's always hard to look back at any type of game when you don't win," Lundqvist said. "If it's playoffs, Olympics or outdoor games, if you don't win the game, you don't walk around and think back on it with a big smile on your face. If you have a good game, you win, it's easier to go there mentally. So, that's what you make sure you want to do: play your best and make the most of it."

Buffalo's Jason Pominville has a unique perspective.

He played in that first Winter Classic for the Sabres, and 10 years later, he is a part of a more-established event.

"The first one was a lot of unknown, but the way it went, the way the fans responded, the way the game ended, I don't think you could have asked for a better scenario for the league," Pominville said Sunday.

"Now, the whole buildup around it, from press conferences in the summertime, TV shows, everything around it has been pretty amazing to be a part of. We're excited about it again, for sure."

Sabres coach Phil Housley said that he hopes performing well on the big stage "springboards us" to a better second half this season.

Buffalo is coming off an exciting 4-3, come-from-behind overtime victory at New Jersey on Friday.

Perhaps, the hottest player in the league is Sabres center Jack Eichel, who has scored seven goals in his past six games. Eichel scored two goals Friday, giving him 15 this season.

"Most kids, I think, dream of playing in this game, and I was no different," said Eichel, who brings a four-game point-scoring streak into Monday. "I am just so excited to be a part of it."

The Rangers lost their last game, a 3-2 shootout loss at Detroit on Friday, and they are just 1-1-2 in their past four.

"This game we're playing is very important," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault. "You look at the standings right now and everything is so tight. So, once the whole hoopla of (Sunday) and the family skating is over, (Monday) at 1:00 when the puck drops, it's going to be about the two points."

Rangers edge Sabres in Winter Classic
January 1, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) J.T. Miller was in the perfect spot in front of the goal to take advantage of a rebound in overtime and keep the New York Rangers perfect in four regular season outdoor games.

Miller scored a power-play goal 2:43 into the extra period to lift the Rangers to a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday in the NHL's 10th Winter Classic at Citi Field.

The Rangers went on the power play 2:15 into overtime when Jacob Josefson was whistled for tripping Jimmy Vesey. On the winner, Kevin Shattenkirk fired a shot that rebounded right to Miller, who put it in.

''Fortunate to get a good shot to the net,'' Miller said. ''Not too often they come right on the stick like that.''

Paul Carey and Michael Grabner scored in the first period for the Rangers, who improved to a league-best 4-0 in outdoor games during the season. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 31 shots to help New York improve to 6-2-3 in its last 11 overall.

''We talked about going into this game there's no way you're going to look back at this as a great memory if you don't win,'' said Lundqvist, who is 4-0-0 with a 1.98 goals-against average outdoors. ''Now we got a big win and we can always look back at this game as a great experience.''

Rasmus Ristolainen had a goal and an assist, Sam Reinhart also scored and Kyle Okposo had two assists for the Sabres. Robin Lehner finished with 39 saves for Buffalo, which has just 10 wins this season but is 4-3-5 in its last 12 games.

''The first 10 minutes were not very good, we were kind of dipping our toe in,'' Okposo said. ''Once we calmed down and played our game, we played well. So I'm proud of the guys, proud of the way we played.''

The game, played at the home of baseball's New York Mets, was on the 10th anniversary of the Sabres' 2-1 shootout loss to Pittsburgh in Buffalo in the first Winter Classic. This was also the league's 24th regular season outdoor game.

Lundqvist made a sensational save on an attempt by Zemgus Girgensons with 2:12 remaining to keep the score tied.

''It was a fun game to play,'' Lundqvist said. ''Overall, I thought we were the better team, but we took a lot of penalties that put us on our heels a little bit.''

The national anthem was performed by the Every Voice Choirs, a New York City-based group of children born in 2008, the year of the first Winter Classic. The Goo Goo Dolls, a rock band that started in the Buffalo area, performed during the first intermission.

Despite the official temperature at puck drop at 20.5 degrees, the game drew a sellout crowd of 41,821.

''It was loud, the crowd was behind both teams,'' Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh said. ''It was great for us to find a way to come through in overtime.''

There was a shadow across about half the ice lengthwise at the start of the game. By the middle of the opening period, the shadow was at least partially covering about two-thirds of the ice, with the team benches in sun along the outfield edge and facing where home plate usually sits. The playing surface was completely in the shade at the start of the second period, except for the side boards to Lehner's right on the first base side of the field.

The Sabres trailed 2-0 after one period before Reinhart cut the deficit in half 56 seconds into the second period on a rebound of Ristolainen's shot.

Shortly before that, Lehner made a stellar stop on a short-handed breakaway by Grabner that would've given the Rangers a three-goal lead.

The Sabres tied it 27 seconds into the third as Ristolainen fired a wrist shot off a pass from Ryan O'Reilly.

''We got the momentum back,'' Lehner said. ''We start working hard, they start taking penalties. We got back to the game. Unfortunately we got a penalty there (in overtime).''

New York got on the scoreboard at 4:09 of the first as Carey got a pass from Jesper Fast and fired it past Lehner from straightaway.

Grabner made it 2-0 at 8:20. Marc Staal sent the puck of Lehner's back as he spun around and skated past the left side of the goal, and it came to Grabner at the right side and he put it in for his 18th of the season.

NOTES: Lundqvist also got his 423rd career victory, tying Tony Esposito for eighth place all-time on the NHL's career list. ... Lundqvist, McDonagh and Staal have played in each of the Rangers' four regular season outdoor games. ... Buffalo LW Benoit Pouliot played in his fifth outdoor game, tying Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith, Brad Richards, Brent Seabrook and Jonathan Toews for the most. Pouliot previously appeared in two Heritage Classic games - for Montreal on Feb. 20, 2011, and Edmonton on Oct. 23, 2016 - and the Rangers' Stadium Series games in Jan. 2014. ... The Sabres gave up a home game to be in this one since the Rangers are contractually obligated to play all their home games at Madison Square Garden for a tax exemption. ... Rangers coach Alain Vigneault earned his 635th win, breaking a tie with Darryl Sutter for sole possession of 11th place on the NHL's all-time list.

UP NEXT

Rangers: Host Chicago on Wednesday night

Sabres: At Minnesota on Thursday night in the fifth game of a stretch of seven straight away from Buffalo.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

? Big 14 is 7-1 in bowl games, with Michigan the only loser.

? Big X is 5-3 in bowl games; 8 out of 10 teams made a bowl.

? MAC is 1-4 in bowls this year, 6-22 in their last 28 bowls overall.

? Early line on the college football national title game: Alabama -5.5

? Bears repeating that Syracuse upset Clemson October 13, then went 0-5 rest of the season.

? Baker Mayfield had three scholarship offers out of high school; FAU, Rice, New Mexico.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??..

13) NFL coaching carousel: Colts-Raiders-Cardinals-Bears-Lions now need new head coaches, joining the Giants.

Broncos keep Vance Joseph for next year; Cleveland keeps Hue Jackson- no word out of Cincinnati on Marvin Lewis yet.

12) Georgia 54, Oklahoma 48 OT? Total yardage was 531-527 Oklahoma; they led 31-14 right before halftime, but a messed-up squib kick allowed Georgia to kick a FG at the halftime gun, and that turned out to be huge.

Now the debate about Baker Mayfield?s NFL prospects can begin; very polarizing kid. He was 23-35/287 yards in this game.

11) Alabama 24, Clemson 6? SEC is 4-5 n bowl games this year, but they?ve got two teams playing for the national title next week in Atlanta.

As great a game as the Rose Bowl, this game was a dud- Clemson didn?t have the QB play to move the ball at all on Alabama. Hell, Clemson barely beat the Crimson Tide last year, when they had Deshaun Watson.

10) Central Florida 34, Auburn 27? Good for the UCF kids; their coach bolted to Nebra$ka about 90 $econds after they won their conference title game, but UCF wins their New Year?s Day bowl game and finished an unbeaten season. Two years ago, the Knights went 0-12.

Central Florida is a very big school and is a sleeping giant athletically. It doesn?t have Nebraska?s tradition, but it has a brighter future, given the wealth of high school football talent in Florida.

9) North Texas starts league play 2-0 in Conference USA, with pair of one-point wins, in El Paso and San Antonio. Been six years since the Mean Green?s basketball team finished conference play over .500, back when Johnny Jones was UNT?s coach, before he bolted to LSU.

8) You read about all these NFL coaching vacancies and who gets interviewed and all, and I think about the late Al Davis, who would often interview people he had no intention of hiring, but what he wanted was to pick their brain, to know what they knew, to help him down the road.

I?m guessing that Sean McVay?s success this season will lead to a couple of younger guys getting head coaching jobs this winter. People tend to imitate successful teams.

7) Sunday night score: Rockets 148, Lakers 142 2OT? Houston?s bench was +46 in this game; Lakers? subs were -30. Rockets snapped a 5-game losing streak.

6) Georgia Bulldogs QB Jake Fromm hit three homers in the 2011 Little League World Series.

5) Arizona Cardinals played really well on defense down the stretch; in their last six games, Redbird opponents converted only 11 of 70 third down plays.

4) One of the more overrated things TV guys say a lot is, when a team plays a poor first half, ??that coach must be peeling the paint off the walls in the locker room!!!?

Oftentimes, if a team is getting waxed at halftime, there are tactical adjustments that need to be made, and that takes brain power and grease boards, not screaming/yelling, especially in the NFL, where halftime is 12 short minutes.

I spent many years as a part of basketball programs; the best coaches I worked for rarely yelled at halftime, they addressed what needed to be done and how we were going to do it.

3) Rams host Atlanta in the playoffs Saturday night; their last playoff game was a 47-17 loss in the Georgia Dome to the Michael Vick-led Falcons in 2004.

2) This from a New York Times article a friend e-mailed me over the weekend:

?(The ACC has) corporate sponsors include Toyota, Gatorade and Geico. When the conference filed its annual tax return for 2015, it reported about a quarter-billion dollars from broadcasting games for its member universities, as well as $147 million in other sports-related revenue. Its commissioner earned $2.9 million. The ACC was a huge commercial success with income that would normally generate a huge tax bill.

But no taxes were owed. As the conference explained in its filing with the Internal Revenue Service, the Atlantic Coast and its member schools are nonprofit charitable organizations that place an emphasis on ?academic excellence??

College sports is big business, for sure.

1) Buffalo Bills fans are so happy the Bengals beat Baltimore to put the Bills into the playoffs that they?ve contributed over $57,000 to Cincinnati QB Andy Dalton?s charitable foundation in the last 24 hours. Bills are in the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

Ovechkin's 2nd goal lifts Capitals over Hurricanes 5-4 in OT
January 2, 2018

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 26th goal 1:57 into overtime and the Washington Capitals beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 on Tuesday night for their third straight win.

Ovechkin also tied it with 7:15 left in regulation, with Nicklas Backstrom assisting on both goals. Alex Chiasson, Devante Smith-Pelly and Dmitry Orlov each scored for the Capitals, who went to overtime for the sixth time in eight games.

Teuvo Teravainen and Elias Lindholm scored in the third period, and Victor Rask had two goals for the Hurricanes, who trailed by two midway through the second. They rallied to take a short-lived lead midway through the third before Ovechkin struck twice to end their six-game home winning streak.

After Sebastian Aho hit the post in OT for Carolina, Ovechkin headed the other way and fired a shot from the right circle that beat Cam Ward to end it.

Braden Holtby stopped 34 shots for the Capitals.

PENGUINS 5, FLYERS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Phil Kessel and Conor Sheary scored in a four-goal second period to lead Pittsburgh past scuffling Philadelphia.

Ryan Reaves and Tom Kuhnhackl also scored in the second to help the Penguins beat their in-state rivals again. Both teams started the night outside the Eastern Conference playoff standings.

Flyers goalie Brian Elliott, making his 14th straight start, allowed the four goals on just eight shots in the second period and was yanked for Michal Neuvirth in the third.

Pittsburgh lost goalie Tristan Jarry to an injury in the second. Jarry appeared to take a stiff shot off his blocker hand and was checked by the team trainer. Matt Murray kept the Flyers scoreless the rest of the way.

The Penguins' scoring burst came in just four minutes and they needed only 40 seconds during that span to score twice and take a 3-1 lead.

Jamie Oleksiak added a power-play goal in the third to seal Pittsburgh's fourth win in 11 games.

Jordan Weal scored for the Flyers.

BRUINS 5, ISLANDERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Patrice Bergeron had the go-ahead goal in the second period and the surging Boston Bruins scored three times in the third to pull away from New York.

Danton Heinen, Brad Marchand, Tim Schaller and Noel Acciari also scored for the Bruins, who are 7-0-2 in their last nine games. Tuukka Rask stopped 25 shots.

Jordan Eberle had New York's goal and Jaroslav Halak finished with 33 saves as the Islanders lost their third straight. Josh Bailey was held without a point, ending his career-high streak at 11 games.

The Bruins improved to 12-1-2 in their last 15 games against Eastern Conference opponents.

LIGHTNING 2, MAPLE LEAFS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 30 shots for his NHL-best sixth shutout of the season to lead Tampa Bay over Toronto.

Vasilevskiy got his league-leading 26th win, and Cedrick Paquette and Alex Killorn scored for the Lightning, who won for the 12th time in 14 games.

Frederik Andersen had 34 saves for the Maple Leafs, who lost their third straight and are 3-6-1 in the last 10 games.

BLUES 3, DEVILS 2, SO

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Carter Hutton stopped 24 shots through overtime and both New Jersey attempts in the shootout to lift St. Louis.

Brayden Schenn and Vladimir Tarasenko scored in the tiebreaker for the Blues. Tarasenko and Vladimir Sobotka scored in regulation as St. Louis earned its ninth straight win against New Jersey, dating back to a 7-1 loss to the Devils on Jan. 21, 2014. The Blues have a 30-11 scoring edge during the streak.

Hutton improved to 7-3-0 on the season. He made an eye-popping pad save on Marcus Johansson with 2:09 left in overtime, then stopped Taylor Hall and Kyle Palmieri in the shootout.

Nico Hischier and Hall scored for New Jersey. Keith Kinkaid made 27 stops through overtime, but failed on both shots in the shootout. The Devils have lost three straight.

BLUE JACKETS 2, STARS 1

DALLAS (AP) - Oliver Bjorkstrand scored twice 78 seconds apart early in the third period and Columbus stopped a three-game losing streak with a win over Dallas.

Bjorkstrand's seventh and eighth goals of the season came after Devin Shore tipped in a shot from John Klingberg to break a scoreless tie for Dallas in the first minute of the third.

The Stars' four-game home winning streak ended in a matchup of teams with identical records going into the halfway point of the season, the 41st game.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 21 shots for his 200th career victory.

On the tying goal, Bjorkstrand won a puck battle and skated in on Ben Bishop, beating the Dallas goalie and ending his five-period scoreless streak. Bishop had 24 saves.

SHARKS 4, CANADIENS 1

MONTREAL (AP) - Timo Meier scored twice and San Jose rebounded from its worst loss of the season with a victory over slumping Montreal.

Joe Thornton and Marc-Edouard Vlasic also scored for the Sharks (21-12-4), who were coming off a 6-0 setback Sunday in Dallas. San Jose has won four of five.

Andrew Shaw scored for Montreal (16-20-4), which has lost five straight games and scored just four goals during that span.

Aaron Dell made 30 saves and has won six consecutive starts.

WILD 5, PANTHERS 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Matt Cullen and Eric Staal each scored twice as Minnesota stopped Florida's five-game winning streak.

Devan Dubnyk made 25 saves for Minnesota, which has won three of four. Charlie Coyle added an empty-net goal and Jared Spurgeon had three assists. Zach Parise made his season debut for the Wild after missing the first 39 games while recovering from back surgery.

Jonathan Huberdeau scored his 14th goal for Florida. James Reimer stopped 23 of the 26 shots he faced before leaving in the second period with an injury.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

? Notre Dame basketball star Bonzie Colson will miss eight weeks after breaking his left foot in practice this week? he could be back for the ACC tourney/NCAA?s.

? Early line on the college football national title game: Alabama -4.5 over Georgia

? Marvin Lewis signed a 2-year contract extension to keep coaching the Bengals.

? Carson Palmer retired Tuesday; he had a 92-87-1 record as an NFL starter, with 46,247 career passing yards.

? Red Sox hit the fewest home runs in the American League LY; do you think JD Martinez? agent is aware of this stat? (yes, he is)

? With the Bills making the playoffs, Seattle Mariners now own the longest playoff drought in North America? they last the playoffs in 2001.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Chuck Pagano lost his job Sunday, after six years of coaching the Colts. Pagano had leukemia back in 2012, but has beaten the disease and is healthy again, thankfully.

We watch NFL games every week and coaches get hired/fired and we really don?t know much about them, just what we see on Sundays/Mondays. But the coaches who get fired have families and lives and they?re people like us, just a lot wealthier.

Monday night, I saw a video of Pagano FaceTime-ing with a 21-year old leukemia patient who he did not know, just a kid who was fighting for his life, but he and coach Pagano talked for a minute and 55 seconds, about leukemia and medications and what food they could eat during their treatment. This was 2-3 years ago? the young man and coach Pagano have a mutual friend, which is why the call was made. The young man is healthy now, which is great news.

It is impossible to watch those 115 seconds without thinking that Chuck Pagano is a great freakin? person, to help a kid he didn?t even know. He lost his job this week, but he?ll find another one, and even though he?ll never be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he?s a Hall of Fame person, and that is way more important.

12) U of Arizona fired football coach Rich Rodriguez Tuesday night, even after an investigation over sexual harassment was termed unfounded (Rodriguez voluntarily took a polygraph test and passed it). Rodriguez? former administrative aide threatened to sue the school for $7.5M, but all that has gone away, but so has Rodriguez? job.

11) In one episode of CSI, a gambler loses $53,000 on one hand on blackjack when the dealer pulls a 10-card blackjack; they said on the show that the record for most cards in a blackjack is 11 cards? imagine losing a hand that way? No bueno.

10) Titans-Chiefs playoff game is on ESPN Saturday, with Jon Gruden as color commentator, the same Jon Gruden who likely will be coach of the Oakland Raiders at this time next week. Raiders/Chiefs is obviously one of the NFL?s fiercest rivalries.

Now Gruden and Andy Reid are friends, from their days together as assistants in Green Bay, but that production meeting they?ll have Thursday or Friday will almost have to be odd? how much information you giving to a guy who will be your arch-rival starting next week?

9) Jon Gruden is 95-81 in 11 years as an NFL head coach, making playoffs five times. He won Super Bowl XXXVII with Tampa Bay, then missed playoffs in four of his last six seasons.

In other words, he?s not exactly Vince Lombardi.

8) Indianapolis Colts? GM Chris Ballard was once a WR at Wisconsin; he didn?t play, but he has learned the sport well and is now an NFL GM. The Badgers? QB while Ballard was at Wisconsin was current Seahawks? OC Darrell Bevell, but there are people on Twitter who are adamant that Ballard wants Chiefs? special teams coach Dave Toub to be the next coach in Indianapolis.

7) Green Bay Packers pushed GM Ted Thompson out of his job and gave coach Mike McCarthy a one-year contract extension.

6) Odd Fact of the Day: A pair of twins was born in Delano, CA this week; a boy was born just before midnight Sunday night, and his twin sister was born just after midnight, meaning the twins were actually born in different years. You don?t see that a lot.

5) West Virginia is getting F Asa Ahmad eligible to play for the January 13 game against Texas Tech. Big addition for the Mountaineers, who are 14-1 and rolling.

4) It bothers me that pro and college teams use ?search firms? to find new coaches. For the love of God, I?m sitting in my living room and I could direct teams to solid candidates. For free.

Lot of times the search firm got the current decision-maker his job, so this is a case of paying back the people who got you your job.

If you?re an NFL or NBA GM and you don?t know who the best candidates are to be your new coach, then:
a) You probably shouldn?t be the GM of a pro team or
b) Maybe you shouldn?t have fired the guy you just fired.

3) Based on what I heard on the ESPN Film Room Monday night, Bret Bielema could be TV gold if he chooses to head in the direction. He has a great baritone voice, is sarcastic and appears to have a pretty good sense of humor- he cracked that he might have a career as an instant replay official after he called one review correctly Monday.

2) Auburn beat Alabama in the Iron Bowl; they split with Georgia, but Bama-Georgia will play for the college football national title, while Auburn lost their bowl game to an AAC team. That must be going over real well down on the Plains.

1) Alabama-Georgia in Atlanta?s new dome Monday night; its good to be a scalper, not so good to own a hotel in the Atlanta area? lot fewer out-of-towners coming in for the game.
