Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Odds to win the 2018 Masters:

15-2? Jordan Spieth

10-1? Dustin Johnson

12-1? Rory McIlroy

15-1? Thomas, Fowler, Woods

18-1? Day, Rahm, Rose

25-1? Koepka, Matsuyama

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Titans 22, Chiefs 21? Kansas City is first NFL team to lose a playoff game after leading by 18+ points at halftime- they?re 1-11 in their last 12 playoff games, losing last six home playoff tilts. QB Alex Smith will likely be elsewhere next season.

12) Falcons 26, Rams 13? Any NFL team that is -2 or worse in turnovers stands less than a 20% chance of winning that game; against playoff-caliber teams, a lot lower %age. Rams turned ball over twice on special teams, had zero takeaways? cannot win that way.

11) Colorado 80, Arizona 77? On Selection Sunday the Buffaloes could be leaning heavily on this week, when they upset Arizona and ASU in Boulder. Colorado led here by 16 at the half- they start three freshmen. PG Wright had 16 points, 10 assists, 7 turnovers.

Quote of the Day, part 2, from Arizona coach Sean Miller:
?You always want your team to play for you as the coach, and our guys, they really struggle playing for me ? they really do. I can?t get them to play hard. We do it for a while. I know we?ve had a win streak and we also have a good team. We have a lot of talent. With our team, it?s really hard to get our guys to run as fast as they can. That?s not them. That?s me. I have a hard time reaching our guys. I can?t reach them, I really can?t.?

That doesn?t sound good.

10) Florida 77, Missouri 75? Mizzou was up a hoop when they fouled a Florida 3-point shooter with 0:21 left- the kid made 2 of 3 shots, tying the game. Mizzou then held for last shot, but a casual pass on the wing was stolen by Chiozza and he beat the buzzer with a walk-off layup, an awful loss for the homestanding Tigers.

9) NC State 96, Duke 85? Kevin Keatts gets his first ACC win in Wolfpack?s ACC home opener; all five State starters scored in double figures. Wolfpack bench outscored Duke?s 25-4.

Virginia 61, North Carolina 49? Tar Heels shot 25.8% inside arc, turned ball over 19 times (-8); they lost 53-43 here LY, and then won the national title five weeks later.

8) Bad Beat of the Night: Iowa State (+7.5) lost by 9 at Oklahoma State, 96-87 in overtime.

7) West Virginia 89, Oklahoma 76? Trae Young scored 28, but no other Sooner had more than 12? Young had 8 turnovers, only 5 assists.

6) Providence 81, Xavier 72? Friars even their Big East mark at 2-2; they were crushed 44-28 on boards, but Xavier was just 5-18 on arc.

5) LSU 69, Texas A&M 68- Kid on LSU nailed a 30-footer for the walk-off road win for Bayou Bengals, who are 10-4. Texas Aggies were 11-1, looked like best team in country in November, but thanks to injuries, suspensions, are now 0-3 in the SEC.

4) Tennessee 76, Kentucky 65? Wildcats were up 37-29 at half, but lost for 4th time in last five visits to Knoxville. Volunteers get their first win in three SEC games.

3) Wyoming 79, Boise State 78 OT? Broncos were up 16 at halftime, lose in OT, their first loss in four Mountain West games. Wyoming is 11-5 now.

2) Western Kentucky 112, Marshall 87? Freshman Anderson scored 16 points in 19:00 off the bench in his first college game after becoming eligible Friday.

1) Jacksonville State 64, Belmont 60? Upset in the Ohio Valley Conference; Murray State/Austin Peay are tied for first now.

Ovechkin, Backstrom power Capitals past Blues, 4-3 in OT
January 7, 2018

DETROIT (AP) Dan Girardi had a goal and an assist in the first period before blocking a shot above the shoulders in the second period and leaving the Tampa Bay Lightning's 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 on Sunday night.

Girardi turned his head to the left when Detroit's Martin Frk took a shot on a power play and the puck appeared to hit the defenseman in the neck. He lay face down on the ice while a doctor evaluated him on the ice and was eventually able to sit up. Girardi later skated slowly off the ice with teammates at his side and walked toward the dressing room. The team confirmed in the second intermission that Girardi would not return to play, adding initial reports were he was OK.

Girardi assisted on Tyler Johnson's goal that put Tampa Bay up 2-0. Yanni Gourde and Nikita Kucherov restored two-goal leads in the second and third periods. Gourde added a second goal of the night late in the game, putting the Lightning ahead 5-2.

Louis Domingue stopped 34 shots for the NHL-leading Lightning. They avoided losing three straight for the first time this season.

Detroit had won a season-high four straight. Gustav Nyquist and Justin Abdelkader scored in the second and third period to pull the Red Wings within a goal. Detroit's Petr Mrazek made 19 saves, filling in for Jimmy Howard, who was out with a lower-body injury.

PENGUINS 6, BRUINS 5, OT

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Evgeni Malkin got his second goal of the game at 2:51 of overtime to rally Pittsburgh past Boston.

Phil Kessel set up Malkin, who one-timed a shot over Tuukka Rask's pad during a 2-on-1.

Malkin and Kessel scored power-play goals in regulation, Kris Letang, Jamie Oleksiak and Riley Sheahan also connected, and Sidney Crosby had three assists. The Penguins got consecutive victories for the first time since Dec. 1-2 when topped Buffalo twice.

Matt Murray stopped all six shots he faced in relief of Tristan Jarry, who made 14 saves on 19 shots before he was pulled after the Bruins' fifth goal.

Brad Marchand, David Pastrnak, David Backes, Noel Acciari and Ryan Spponer scored in regulation for Boston. The Bruins lost, but earned a point for the 11th straight game (8-0-3).

CAPITALS 4, BLUES 3, OT

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nicklas Backstrom scored at 4:17 of overtime and Alex Ovechkin had a power-play goal and an assist to help Washington beat St. Louis.

Ovechkin tied it at 2 on the power play 8 eight minutes into the third with his 27th goal, and Lars Eller gave the Capitals the lead with 9:11 left. The lead did not last long, with Carl Gunnarson credited with a goal after his shot into pack of players evaded goaltender Braden Holtby with 4:09 remaining.

Holtby made 30 saves. The Capitals have won four in a row overall and nine consecutive home games.

It was Forsberg's first win since Nov. 11 and just the second of his first season in Chicago. Forsberg had been the backup all year, but his role had come into question after Jeff Glass came up the minors and played well with starter Corey Crawford sidelined by an upper-body injury.

Darnell Nurse scored for the Edmonton. The Oilers have dropped six of seven.

ISLANDERS 5, DEVILS 4, SO

NEW YORK (AP) - Jaroslav Halak made 42 saves and Brock Nelson scored the only goal in the shootout and New York beat New Jersey to snap a five-game losing streak.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

More odds to win the 2018 Masters:

35-1? Casey-Mickelson-Garcia

40-1? Bubba Watson

45-1? Scott-Stenson-Kuchar-Cantlay

50-1? Reed-Fleetwood-Schauffele

55-1? Oosthuizen-Leishman-Pieters

60-1? Charley Hoffman

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend??..

13) Lamont Simpson is a college basketball ref who is a very busy man. Here is a sampling of the 35 games he has worked over the first 59 days of the season:

Nov 10-14: Works five consecutive nights, doing Duke-Illinois-Indiana-VCU games.
Nov 20-22: Tough duty; three days at the Maui Classic.
Nov 23-26: More tough duty: Wooden Legacy tourney in Fullerton; this is three games in four days, at least.
Nov 28-Dec 1: Four straight nights, including games at Purdue-Pitt-Nebraska
Dec 20-23: Four straight nights; three Big 14 games and a Oklahoma game
Jan 2-7: Mr Simpson worked the last six nights: four Big 14 games, two MAC games

These basketball refs have to be in really good shape, working six nights in a row (Kevin Durant would need some time off in there), but they?re banking $1,000+ per game, minus expenses.

12) Ohio State 80, Michigan State 64? I?m watching the Saints playoff game, and I flip over during a commercial and see: Ohio State 63, Michigan State 40 and I wonder why I spend so much time trying to analyze college basketball? Wildly erratic teams, all over the map.

Chris Holtmann upset #1 Villanova last year, when he was coaching at Butler; he upsets the #1 Spartans here, for Ohio State. So you ask: Who was the last coach to upset the #1 team in consecutive years, while coaching at different schools?

11) Odd Fact of the Day: The last coach to upset #1 teams in consecutive seasons while coaching different schools was Thad Matta, who upset St Joe?s in 2004 when he was at Xavier, then upset Illinois the next year, his first year at Ohio State. CBS came up with that nugget.

10) Eight of the top 17 college basketball teams lost this weekend.

9) Philadelphia 76ers are 17-12 when Joel Embiid plays, 2-7 when he does not.

8) Lakers lost nine of their last ten games, they?re eight games out of a playoff spot in the West and then comes news that the Celtics have their #1 pick in next June?s draft. Oy.

7) Oregon State basketball coach Wayne Tinkle is the youngest of 11 children; got to be tough with that many older siblings.

6) Back in 2003, people voted for the Georgia high school football player of the year; they chose a QB from a private school over a WR who went to a public school and then to Georgia Tech.

The QB wound up being a WR at Miami OH; he is Sean McVay, coach of the Rams. The WR wound up being a damn good NFL receiver, Calvin Johnson. Poor decision by those voters.

5) Why are ESPN/CBS running ads for the Masters on January 7th? Anyone who cares knows when the Masters is and who televises it. It is three months from now. Enough already.

4) Eagles are +3 at home against Atlanta next week- they?re first #1 seed (since 2001) to be a home underdog to a #6 seed in this round of the playoffs.

3) Who the hell fills out an NBA All-Star ballot and doesn?t vote for Lebron James?

2) Jaguars 10, Bills 3? Social media was harsh when discussing Blake Bortles Sunday, but fact of the matter is this: He led the Jaguars to a divisional title and they won a playoff game. Lot of guys making way more money than Bortles who haven?t won a playoff game yet.

1) Saints 31, Panthers 26? New Orleans won its 8th straight home game and heads to Minnesota for the next round of the playoffs. Saints beat Carolina three times this year- they?re first team in NFL history to go 3-0 against a team in one season, scoring 30+ points in all three games.

Early playoff lines for next weekend:
AFC: Steelers -13.5 vs Jacksonville?..Patriots -6.5 vs Tennessee
NFC: Falcons -3 @ Philadelphia??..Saints +5 @ Minnesota

Preview: Blue Jackets (24-16) at Maple Leafs (25-16)
Date: January 08, 2018 7:00 PM EDT

TORONTO -- Going by recent trends, the possibility of a shootout at the Air Canada Centre looms when the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Columbus Blue Jackets play there Monday night.

Both teams are coming into the game off shootout wins.

The Maple Leafs have won their past two games in shootouts, including a 3-2 verdict over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. They also beat the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in a shootout on Thursday.

The Blue Jackets defeated the Florida Panthers 3-2 in a shootout on Sunday. Josh Anderson got the decisive goal in the eighth round.

The Blue Jackets, however, did not require a shootout on Dec. 20 in Columbus when they beat the Maple Leafs 4-2.

Both teams will take wins any way they can find them lately.

The Maple Leafs (25-16-2) are 5-4-1 in their past 10 games despite two wins in a row as they play the fourth game of a six-game homestand.

The Blue Jackets (24-16-3) are 4-4-2 in their past 10 games despite winning two of their past three.

The Blue Jackets failed to close the deal against the Panthers in regulation when Aleksander Barkov tied the score for Florida at 18:26 of the third.

Both goaltenders were busy, with Sergei Bobrovsky making 42 saves for Columbus and James Reimer stopping 46 shots for Florida.

There were positives for the Blue Jackets besides the two points they earned, including Nick Foligno ending a 10-game stretch without a goal when he scored in the first period.

Brandon Dubinsky (fractured orbital bone), Cam Atkinson (foot) and Alexander Wennberg (back) are injured and Columbus has been struggling to score at times, particularly on the power play.

"The first period we played with energy," Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said. "The second period we were treading water a bit. In the third, I thought we played really well but couldn't get that third goal."

Columbus was a little unlucky on the tying goal with the puck deflecting off Foligno's skate to Barkov.

"Sometimes it happens," Bobrovsky said. "The most important thing is we get the two points. Those bounces, we can't control that. It could happen in the first period. It happened in the third."

The Blue Jackets are last in the league in scoring on the power play, but center Pierre-Luc Dubois notched a goal with a man advantage in the second period Sunday.

"You can see when our power play is working what it can do for us," Dubois said. "If you get two or three five-on-five goals, like we usually do, then you add one or two on the power play, we're a really dangerous team.

"Our power play hasn't been working for us this year, but the past couple of games we're getting closer and closer."

Toronto center Tyler Bozak has scored the clinching goal in both Maple Leafs' shootout wins last week.

"I think shootouts have always been pretty comfortable and I've done pretty well in them, so it's fun to go in those, especially when you've got a chance to win it for the guys," Bozak said after the game on Saturday.

Bozak also scored the tying goal in the third period Saturday to bring the Maple Leafs back from a 2-0 disadvantage.

"I thought we had a pretty bad first half of the game," Bozak said. "I thought they kind of took it to us. They played pretty well, then we kind of turned it on a bit.

"I think our power play probably should have had a couple of goals, which was unfortunate, but it's nice to be able to come back like that and get the two points. There's going to be a lot of close games here the rest of the way."

Toronto defenseman Travis Dermott made his NHL debut Saturday and picked up an assist on the tying goal.

"I thought he was confident, moved the puck, skated good," Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said. "He looks like he's got good hockey sense. It looked like the situation didn't intimidate him at all.

"We're just going to watch him like all guys. Everyone comes to the National Hockey League and their first game, everything is great. Then the next game and the next game, over a period of time, we'll see if he's a regular NHL player. If he can help us, he'll play."

Panarin scores in OT, Blue Jackets rally to beat Maple Leafs
January 8, 2018

TORONTO (AP) Columbus goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky had a hard time holding back his smile after a come-from-behind victory over Toronto.

Artemi Panarin scored 3:11 into overtime to help the Blue Jackets overcome a two-goal deficit and beat the Maple Leafs 3-2 on Monday night.

Bobrovsky made 35 saves, including a handful of big ones to keep his team within 2-0 before a third-period rally. Columbus scored twice in the final 4:35 of the third period to set up Panarin's OT goal, when he took a pass off his skate and kicked it to his stick for the winner.

''Those kind of wins make good atmosphere in the locker-room, lots of energy, lots of happiness,'' Bobrovsky said.

Nick Foligno and Pierre-Luc Dubois scored in the third for Columbus. Foligno scored after goalie Frederik Andersen lost a bouncing puck before it found its way behind him, then Dubois tied it with 2:47 left, snapping a wrist shot blocker side on Andersen from the slot.

''We knew if we scored one somehow that it changes momentum,'' Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella. ''The saves (Andersen) made during the game and that one goes in ... it's a funny game.''

James van Riemsdyk and William Nylander scored for the Maple Leafs. Andersen stopped 30 shots.

''At least 50 minutes or so we played great, I think we could have put it away in the third and we didn't. Then they get a good bounce and, yeah, it's tied up,'' Andersen said.

Andersen kept the Leafs in it long enough for van Riemsdyk to open the scoring at 11:09 of the second period, deflecting Roman Polak's point shot past Bobrovsky for his 18th goal.

Nylander doubled the lead on the power play with 3:58 to go in the second, shooting a wrist shot over the glove of a screened Bobrovsky for his ninth.

Blue Jackets forward Sonny Milano left the game in the second period with an upper-body injury and didn't return after being on the receiving end of a check from Andreas Borgman.

The Leafs started the third the way they finished the second and could have put the game away if it wasn't for Bobrovsky, who turned away Connor Brown and Nazem Kadri on point-blank chances.

''Some nights when you're ahead you get on your heels and the other team takes it to you. That wasn't the case at all. It was the opposite way around. But they scored on their opportunities that we gave them,'' Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said.

NOTES: Shots were 36-27 Toronto heading into overtime. ... Borgman replaced Connor Carrick in the lineup after being a healthy scratch in Toronto's 3-2 shootout win Saturday against Vancouver.

UP NEXT

Blue Jackets: Play at Buffalo on Thursday night.

Maple Leafs: Hosts Ottawa on Wednesday night.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

? Stanford 77, USC 76? This game Sunday night ended when a kid on Stanford drained a half-court shot at the buzzer. It is a clip worth finding on the Interweb- quite an ending.

? Raptors 114, Nets 113 OT? Toronto is a very quiet 28-10.

? Vegas Golden Knights, an NHL expansion team, are 18-2-1 at home.

? Dustin Johnson almost got a hole-in-one on a 433-yard, par-4 hole Sunday

? Duquesne is a surprising 3-0 in Atlantic 14, with new coach Keith Dambrot, who was Lebron James? high school coach.

? Minnesota 127, Cleveland 99? Lebron was a career-worst minus-39.

*************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) Alabama 26, Georgia 23 OT? Freshman QB Tua Tagovailoa was 35-53 passing this whole season, before this game. Alabama put him in to start second half, trailing 13-0- they looked dead, but Tagovailoa was 14-24/166 with three TD?s, including the game-winner in OT, as Alabama wins another national title, in highly dramatic fashion.

Jalen Hurts is 25-2 as Alabama?s QB, but he?ll never start another game? will he transfer?

12) Watching the ESPN Film Room on ESPN News, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said: ?In bowl games, officials are going to let ?em play a little more. So if you have to hold, hold.? Kevin Sumlin agreed and said same thing also goes for defensive backs in pass coverage.

11) Gundy made another point just before halftime, saying how important it is for teams to have something positive happen right before the half. ?It really helps the mood in the locker room at halftime.? Halftimes are lot longer in college ball than the NFL.

10) Kevin Sumlin got fired by Texas A&M after this season; if he wants to go on TV next year, he will be very good. Good natured guy, gets points across quickly.

9) Gundy and Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald agreed that their teams are better off with their coordinators calling plays, rather than the head coach, who has to manage the administrative aspects of the program. They were saying playcallers study film ?for eight hours a day?.

8) 6.5 years ago, Georgia QB Jake Fromm played in the Little League World Series; now he was a QB in the national championship game as a freshman in college.

7) A gambler at South Point Casino in Las Vegas risked $557,500 to win $300,000, taking Alabama on the money line. No pointspread. Yikes.

I can?t even imagine what it must be like watching a game with half a million bucks riding on it. Especially this game!!!

6) Portent of the future? National anthem was played with Donald Trump on the field, but the players were in the locker room. Thats smart, avoiding any potential political displays or any other controversies that would take away from the game.

5) If Alabama played 14-0 Central Florida on a neutral field, they?d be a 13-point favorite.

4) In divisional round of NFL playoffs, #1-seeds are 16-5 against #6 seeds- the #6-seed won a road game the previous week, while the #1-seed had a bye.

3) When a 2-seed plays a 3-seed in this round, the 2-seed is 26-8- the bye really does help.

2) Since 2001, when the Patriots play at home in this round of playoffs, they?re 5-4-2 vs spread.

1) Chicago Bears hired Chiefs? OC Matt Nagy as their new head coach. Nagy played six years in the Arena League? he joins Jay Gruden as former AFL QB?s who are now NFL head coaches.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Caps back on top in the Metropolitan
Monty Andrews

The Washington Capitals are once again masters of the Metropolitan Division, as they put their four-game winning streak on the line Tuesday night against the visiting Vancouver Canucks.

The Only Game in Town

Hockey bettors might go a bit crazy this week, with just 13 total games on the schedule between Monday and Thursday. The week kicks off with a one-game ledger, as the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Columbus Blue Jackets on a night where most of the sports world will be fixated on the college football national championship game. But don't sleep on this one, with plenty of interesting trends to pursue. Most notably: The Maple Leafs have a significant home edge in this one; they've won five of their past six games at Air Canada Centre while the visiting Blue Jackets have dropped six of their previous seven away from Columbus.

Winning Washington

The Washington Capitals are once again masters of the Metropolitan Division, as they put their four-game winning streak on the line Tuesday night against the visiting Vancouver Canucks. The Capitals have used their recent hot stretch, combined with the New Jersey Devils' five-game winless skid, to open up a three-game edge atop the division coming into the week - and oddsmakers believe they'll stay there, making them the prohibitive +220 favorite on Bet365 to finish atop the Metropolitan by season's end. Things are decidedly bleaker for the Canucks, who come into this one having dropped four in a row.

Unlikely Central Cellar Dwellers

The Minnesota Wild and Chicago Blackhawks were expected to contend for the Central Division title coming into the season - but as we reach the unofficial first half of the campaign, neither team looks like a division champion as they square off Wednesday night at United Center. Both teams are on the periphery of the Western Conference playoff picture and occupy the bottom two spots in the division; the Wild own a one-point edge over Chicago, but the Blackhawks have a game in hand. Minnesota is installed at +1,300 on Bet365 to claim the Central title, while the Blackhawks find themselves at +1,700 as of Monday.

Injury Updates

* The New York Rangers will have to do without forward Chris Kreider for a while longer as he deals with a blood clot in his arm and a required rib resection. The Rangers are 11-4-1 SU in games in which Kreider has recorded at least one point.

* Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele is expected to be out another six weeks with an upper-body injury, but his team appears to be doing just fine without him. The Jets are 4-0-1 since Scheifele went down, scoring four or more goals four times in that span.

* The Colorado Avalanche are in a similar situation, having gone 5-1-0 since losing defensive star Tyson Barrie to a broken hand. Barrie, who is expected to be out another six weeks, is enjoying a sensational season with 27 points through 34 games.

Player News

* Looking for a model of consistency? Look no further than league scoring leader Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lighting, who has been held without a point just seven times in 42 games. The Lightning are 3-3-1 SU in those seven contests.

* Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan McKinnon has surged into second place in the league scoring race with 52 points; 12 of those have come in his last five games. the Avs are 18-7-2 SU in games in which McKinnon hits the scoresheet.

* It has been nearly a month since Marc-Andre Fleury returned to action, and the Vegas Golden Knights netminder has been simply outstanding in that span. Fleury is 6-1-1 in eight starts, recording two shutouts and allowing more than two goals just once.

Stanley Cup Futures

* There's the Tampa Bay Lightning - and then there's everyone else. Bet365 has the East-leading Lightning as the runaway favorites to win their second Stanley Cup championship, installing them at +575 heading into the week.

* The slumping Devils have seen their Stanley Cup prospects take a nosedive, leaving them with the fifth-best odds in the East entering Monday. Bet365 has New Jersey at +1,400, behind Tampa, Washington, Boston and Toronto.

* Don't look now, but the Colorado Avalanche are paying out a lot less to end their Stanley Cup drought than they were earlier in the season. Colorado is now listed at +2,500 to win its first NHL championship since 2001.

Over/Under Trends

* As good a show as Vegas puts on at home (18-2-1 SU), the expansion Golden Knights have been plenty entertaining away from Sin City, as well. Vegas is 12-7-1 O/U through 20 road games, and 23-16-2 O/U so far this season.

* The Honda Center hasn't seen much red-light action this season, with the Anaheim Ducks having gone 6-14-1 O/U through their first 21 home contests. The Ducks rank 27th in home goals per game (2.62) and 14th in goals against (2.62).
