Rask, Bruins hand Lightning first shutout in nearly 1 year
March 18, 2018

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Tuukka Rask stopped 23 shots to hand Tampa Bay its first shutout of the season and lifting the Boston Bruins over the Lightning 3-0 on Saturday night.

It was Rask's third shutout of the season and 41st of his career. It was also the first time the Lightning failed to score a goal since a 4-0 loss at Boston last April 4 - also against Rask.

David Pastrnak, David Backes and Riley Nash all scored for Boston, which moved within two points of the Lightning for the top spot in the Eastern Conference with one game in hand. Torey Krug assisted on all three of the Bruins' goals.

Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 24 shots for the Lightning, whose last shutout at home came on March 16, 2017, by Toronto's Frederik Andersen. Tampa Bay has lost consecutive games for the first time since going 9-0-1 in the previous 10 games.

FLYERS 4, HURRICANES 2

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Valterri Filppula scored the tiebreaking goal with 5:49 left, and Philadelphia scored four times in the third period to beat Carolina.

Travis Konecny and Jakub Voracek also scored as the Flyers scored three times in a 5:52 span to rally for the win. Michael Raffl added an empty-netter and Alex Lyon stopped 23 shots.

Filppula's breakaway goal snapped a 2-2 tie and secured a needed victory for the Flyers, who entered on a 1-6-1 skid. Philadelphia moved back into third place in the Metropolitan Division, tied with Columbus but holding the tiebreaker.

Jaccob Slavin and Jordan Staal scored and Cam Ward made 23 saves for the Hurricanes, who have lost five of six.

DEVILS 3, KINGS 0

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Keith Kinkaid stopped 38 shots for his first shutout of the season to lead New Jersey past Los Angeles.

Michael Grabner, Nico Hischier and Miles Wood each scored for the Devils, who have won three straight and four of five. New Jersey remained in the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, one point behind Metropolitan Division rivals Philadelphia and Columbus, who both won later Saturday night.

Jonathan Quick made 25 saves for the Kings, who are tied with Anaheim for third in the Pacific.

Kinkaid is 3-0-0 in his career against the Kings with two shutouts. He has won four consecutive starts and is 9-2-0 in his last 11.

BLUE JACKETS 2, SENATORS 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Markus Nutivaara scored a power-play goal in the second period, Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 22 shots, and Columbus beat Ottawa.

Boone Jenner also scored - his third tally in three games - for the Blue Jackets, who have won a season-high seven straight and are holding on to the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with 83 points, tied with Philadelphia and one point ahead of New Jersey.

Alexandre Burrows scored his fifth of the year and Mike Condon stopped 33 shots for Ottawa, which saw a three-game winning streak snapped on the second night of a back-to-back.

OILERS 4, PANTHERS 2

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Connor McDavid had a goal and two assists in the third period and Edmonton rallied past Florida.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Ty Rattie and Adam Larsson also scored for the Oilers, who are 4-1-1 in their past six games.

Cam Talbot made 40 saves for the Oilers.

Frank Vatrano and Vincent Trocheck scored for Florida.

Roberto Luongo made 32 saves for the Panthers, who lost for the first time this season when leading after two periods (23-1).

SABRES 5, BLACKHAWKS 3

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Nicholas Baptiste scored two goals in the third period to lead Buffalo past Chicago.

Baptiste scored the game-winner with 1:56 remaining on a deflection. Following a faceoff win in the Chicago end, Marco Scandella's shot from the point was deflected by Baptiste in the slot for the forward's second goal of the game.

Baptiste also tied the game at 3-3 on a long shot through traffic 2:17 into the third.

Ryan O'Reilly, Benoit Pouliot and Sam Reinhart also scored for the Sabres, and Chad Johnson made 34 saves.

Jonathan Toews, Jordan Oesterle and Tomas Jurco scored for the Blackhawks, and Jean-Francois Berube made 27 saves.

The Sabres got a lift from the returning Jack Eichel, who was back in the lineup after missing 15 games because of an ankle injury. Eichel had one assist and five shots in 18:14.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, CANADIENS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Curtis McElhinney made 33 saves for his third shutout of the season and Toronto extended its club-record home winning streak to 12 straight games.

Andreas Johnsson scored his first NHL goal, and William Nylander, Kasperi Kapanen and Nazem Kadri also had goals for Toronto, which has four victories in a row following a four-game slide (0-2-2).

McElhinney, who picked up the eighth shutout of his career, got his second straight start and third consecutive win with Leafs No. 1 goalie Frederik Andersen still out after taking a blow to the head/neck area in a crease pileup on Wednesday against Dallas.

Charlie Lindgren made 45 saves for Montreal, which dropped to 1-5-2 over its last eight games.

BLUES 4, RANGERS 3, OT

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Brayden Schenn scored 1:02 into overtime, Alex Pietrangelo had two goals in regulation and St. Louis rallied to its third win in four games.

Nikita Soshnikov also scored for the Blues. Jake Allen made 17 saves as St. Louis moved within three points of idle Dallas and Colorado for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference, but lost leading scorer Vladimir Tarasenko to an upper-body injury.

Tarasenko played 7 minutes, 53 seconds of the first period and left the ice following his last shift of the period with no visual injury. He did not return to the Blues bench to begin the second period.

Mika Zibanejad scored twice for Rangers, earning his third multigoal game of the season. Mats Zuccarello also scored, Chris Kreider had a pair of assists and Alexandar Georgiev made 29 saves for New York, which had won its previous two games.

WILD 3, COYOTES 1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Marcus Foligno scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period, helping Minnesota to its fifth win in seven games.

Nino Niederreiter also scored and Eric Staal added an empty-netter. The Wild continued their hold on third place in the Central Division with 10 games to play in the regular season.

Devan Dubnyk, who spent 19 games with the Coyotes in the 2014-15 season, stopped 30 shots for his 200th career win.

Antti Raanta, back in net for the Coyotes after a six-game injury absence, finished with 28 saves. Clayton Keller scored the Coyotes' only goal as they have lost back-to-back games for the first time since Feb. 3 and 6.

SHARKS 5, CANUCKS 3

Kucherov scores 2 to lift Lightning to 3-1 win over Oilers
March 18, 2018

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Nikita Kucherov scored twice to lift the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 3-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday.

Louis Domingue stopped 28 shots to help the Lightning end a two-game slide and move back to four points ahead of Boston for the top overall spot in the Eastern Conference standings. Victor Hedman also scored and Steven Stamkos added two assists.

Tampa Bay killed off five Edmonton power-play chances and kept Connor McDavid off the scoresheet, leaving him four points behind Kucherov for the league lead in points.

Ty Rattie scored for Edmonton and Al Montoya finished with 37 saves.

JETS 4, STARS 2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Patrik Laine scored twice to extend his point streak to 15 games and tie Alex Ovechkin for the NHL goal lead, and Winnipeg beat Dallas to match the franchise wins record at 43.

The second-year sniper has 43 goals, matching the total from Ovechkin, the Washington star and Laine's boyhood favorite. Laine's point streak is the longest active run in the NHL and adds to his league record for the longest point streak by a teenager. The streak includes 18 goals and eight assists.

Ben Chiarot also scored and Blake Wheeler added an empty-netter for Winnipeg. Mattias Janmark and Jamie Benn each scored for Dallas.

Connor Hellebuyck made 28 saves for the Jets in the second game of a six-game homestand. The last time they reached 43 wins was 2014-15, when they made the playoffs for the first time since relocating to Winnipeg from Atlanta.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 4, FLAMES 0

LAS VEGAS (AP) - William Karlsson scored a natural hat trick to lead Vegas over Calgary.

Colin Miller also scored as Vegas snapped a four-game home losing streak and improved to 25-9-2 at T Mobile Arena.

Marc-Andre Fleury, who made his 20th start in 21 games, made 42 saves. In getting his 48th career shutout and fourth of the season, Fleury moved into a tie with Chris Osgood for 12th all-time amongst goaltenders at 401.

Vegas improved to 3-0-0 against Calgary while outscoring the Flames 15-5. The teams meet once more, in the regular-season finale at Calgary on April 7.

Mike Smith stopped 27 shots as the Flames, one of the league's better road teams this season, dropped to 20-11-6 away from home.

BLUES 5, BLACKHAWKS 4, OT

CHICAGO (AP) - Patrik Berglund scored 3:31 into overtime, and St. Louis came from behind for a big victory over lowly Chicago.

Defensemen Alex Pietrangelo and Vince Dunn each had a goal and three assists for the Blues, who are trying to rally for a playoff wild card in the Western Conference. Alexander Steen had a goal and an assist, and Vladimir Sobotka also scored.

St. Louis was trailing 4-3 with 1:22 left in regulation when Pietrangelo drove a long slap shot past a screened Jean-Francois Berube for his 15th of the season. Berglund then got the winner when his shot trickled under Berube in OT.

Alex DeBrincat scored three times for last-place Chicago, which has dropped five of six, including its first loss to Buffalo since December 2009 on Saturday. David Kampf also scored, and Berube made 36 saves.

FLYERS 6, CAPITALS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Wayne Simmonds scored two goals to help lift Philadelphia past Washington.

Oskar Lindblom, Shayne Gostisbehere, Ivan Provorov and Jakub Voracek also had goals for Philadelphia, which stayed in third place in the Metropolitan Division and moved within four points of the first-place Capitals (41-24-7, 89 points). The Flyers began play tied with Columbus, which was idle Sunday, but have a tiebreaker over the Blue Jackets.

Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 43rd goal of the season, and Chandler Stephenson and John Carlson had goals for the Capitals, whose four-game winning streak was snapped.

AVALANCHE 5, RED WINGS 1

DENVER (AP) - Nathan MacKinnon kept up his torrid scoring with two goals and an assist, Semyon Varlamov was sharp in making 37 saves and Colorado extended Detroit's skid to 10 games.

Gabriel Landeskog, Blake Comeau and Tyson Barrie also scored to help the Avalanche remain in playoff position with 10 games remaining. The Avs have 86 points after accumulating a league-low 48 last season.

Justin Abdelkader had a goal for the Red Wings, who fell to 0-9-1 during a winless streak in which they've been outscored by a 41-19 margin. It's the team's longest winless streak since a 12-game run in 1989.

HURRICANES 4, ISLANDERS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Trevor van Riemsdyk scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period and Scott Darling made 26 saves as Carolina beat New York.

Van Riemsdyk's second goal of the season came on a long slap shot with 6:49 remaining to help snap Carolina's three-game losing streak and continue the late season swoon by the Islanders, who have just one win their last 12 games.

Jaccob Slavin, Lee Stempniak and Victor Rask also scored for the Hurricanes. Anders Lee scored twice and Josh Bailey had a goal and an assist for New York. John Tavares had three assists and Jaroslav Halak finished with 35 saves.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Bruins charging for top spot in the East
Monty Andrews

The Boston Bruins claimed a pivotal 3-0 decision in Tampa Bay over the weekend and enter the new week just four points back of the Atlantic Division-leading Lightning with two games in hand.

The Boston Bruins handled the first place Tampa Bay Lightning over the weekend and now sit only four points behind the Bolts for top spot in the Eastern Conference with two games in hand. Monty dangles at the hash and goes bar down to give NHL bettors a breakdown of what to watch for this week on the ice.

Eyes on Top Spot

The Boston BruIns have their sights set on top spot in the Eastern Conference standings as they prepare to entertain the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night. The Bruins claimed a pivotal 3-0 decision in Tampa Bay over the weekend and enter the new week just four points back of the Atlantic Division-leading Lightning with two games in hand. Boston and Columbus have split a pair of meetings this season, with the Bruins prevailing 7-2 in their previous encounter back on Dec. 18.

Tough Trip to T-Bay

Speaking of the Lightning, they still control their destiny atop both the division and the conference as they host the Toronto Maple Leafs at Amalie Arena in a Tuesday night encounter. The favorite to represent the Eastern Conference in the Stanley Cup final bounced back nicely from Saturday?s blanking at the hands of the Bruins by defeating visiting Edmonton 3-1 - and are eyeing a season series win over Toronto after winning two of the first three meetings. The Leafs have won four in a row overall.

Race to the Bottom

While more than two-thirds of NHL teams continue to jockey for playoff positioning with just a few weeks left in the regular season, the bottom two teams in the standings are set to play out the string as the Arizona Coyotes visit the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday. The Sabres lead the Coyotes by a single point entering the week, though Arizona has caught fire of late with victories in 11 of its past 18 games. The Sabres prevailed 5-4 back on Nov. 2 in the only prior meeting between the teams this season.

Player News

* U.S. Olympic forward Ryan Donato has signed with Boston and could be ready to suit up for the Bruins as early as Monday night against the Blue Jackets. Donato is the son of former NHLer Ted Donato; Ryan had five goals and one assist in six games for the U.S. in Pyeongchang last month.

* Colorado Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon and linemate Mikko Rantanen have been red-hot in March, leading the league with 18 points apiece for the month. MacKinnon?s surge has him just two points behind league leader Nikita Kucherov, and has helped the Avs go 5-2-2 O/U so far this month.

Injury Updates

* St. Louis Blues superstar Vladimir Tarasenko is day-to-day entering he week after missing his team?s 5-4 OT win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday after suffering an upper-body injury against the New York Rangers on Saturday. Tarasenko leads the team with 27 goals; the Blues are 15-6-1 when he scores.

* Veteran Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dmitri Kulikov will undergo back surgery and is expected to miss the next eight weeks. It?s a major blow to the blue-line depth of the Jets, who come into the week installed at +1,100 on Bet365 to win their first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history - second-best among Canadian teams.

Stanley Cup Futures

* The Nashville Predators have streaked their way to the best Stanley Cup odds in the NHL. Bet365 has the Predators listed at +375 to win their first championship in franchise history; the Lightning are next at +475, followed by the Boston Bruins (+675), Toronto Maple Leafs (+900) and Vegas Golden Knights (+950).

* The two-time defending champions remain one of the hottest live underdogs with time winding down in the regular season. The Pittsburgh Penguins carry +1,500 odds into the week, eighth-best among NHL teams; they?re also sitting at +750 to represent the East in the finals, the fifth-best odds in the conference.

Betting Trends

* Over bettors have had a field day over the previous seven days, with a whopping 32 of 50 games (64 percent) going above the total in that span. That makes the Over play the stronger of the two over the past 30 days - but only just barely, with 109 Overs compared to 104 Unders in that stretch.

* Home-ice advantage has been a significant edge for favored teams over the past month, with home favorites converting at a 64.8-percent clip in the past 30 days. That late-season boost has pushed home faves? winning rate for the season to 60 percent; road favorites are also strong at 57.6 percent.

Predators beat Sabres 4-0, improve to 14-0-1 in last 15
March 20, 2018

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Pekka Rinne stopped 35 shots for his eighth shutout of the season and the Nashville Predators set a franchise record by earning a point in their 15th consecutive game with a 4-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night.

Mike Fisher and Ryan Johansen scored goals 4:34 apart in the second period, and Filip Forsberg and Ryan Hartman sealed the victory by scoring in the final four minutes.

The NHL-leading Predators improved to 14-0-1 in their past 15, and also extended their team-best road winning streak to nine straight.

Rinne won his 11th straight to match his personal best in a stretch in which he's allowed just 18 goals. The shutout was the 51st of his 12-year career and third in nine games. Rinne also improved to 40-9-4 in becoming the NHL's seventh goalie to win 40 games in a season three or more times.

BLUE JACKETS 5, BRUINS 4, OT

BOSTON (AP) - Cam Atkinson scored 2:55 into overtime to lift Columbus to its eighth straight win, spoiling a splendid NHL debut for Boston forward Ryan Donato.

Sonny Milano, Boone Jenner, Thomas Vanek and Artemi Panarin also scored for the Blue Jackets. Nick Foligno had two assists, and Vanek and Jenner each added one. Joonas Korpisalo stopped 34 shots.

Atkinson cut in on the left wing and fired a wrister past Rask for the game-winner.

Columbus moved into a tie with Philadelphia with 85 points, but the Flyers hold the tiebreaker for third place in the Metropolitan Division and the Blue Jackets hold the first wild card in the Eastern Conference.

Donato had a goal and two assists for Boston, which moved a point behind idle Tampa Bay for first in the Atlantic. Riley Nash, Brad Marchand and David Krejci also scored for the Bruins, and Tuukka Rask finished with 20 saves.

KINGS 4, WILD 3, OT.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Jeff Carter scored his second goal of the game with 33.8 seconds left on the clock in overtime and Los Angeles recovered after giving up a two-goal lead.

Tanner Pearson and Dustin Brown also scored for Los Angeles, which has alternated wins and losses over its past nine games. The Kings pulled into a tie with Anaheim for third place in the Pacific Division with 86 points, and hold the tiebreaker over the Ducks.

Jonathan Quick made 24 saves for the Kings, who appeared headed to a second straight loss until Brown tipped home a point shot from Drew Doughty with 46.5 seconds left in regulation. Doughty finished with three assists.

Joel Eriksson Ek scored for the first time in 13 games with 2:31 left to give Minnesota the lead after trailing 2-0. Eric Staal added his 39th and Zach Parise had his second goal in three games for the Wild.

Devan Dubnyk stopped 26 shots for Minnesota, which is in third in the Central Division, four points ahead of Colorado.

PANTHERS 2, CANADIENS 0

MONTREAL (AP) - Roberto Luongo stopped 28 shots for his third shutout of the season and 76th of his career to lead Florida.

Aaron Ekblad and Aleksander Barkov scored to help the Panthers inch closer to a playoff position, pulling three points behind idle new Jersey for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. Florida has two games in hand on the Devils.

Antti Niemi finished with 38 saves for Montreal, which was shut out for the second straight game and 12th time this season - including three against the Panthers. The Canadiens were coming off a 4-0 loss at Toronto on Saturday.
