High-scoring Lightning hold off Islanders, 7-6
March 22, 2018

DENVER (AP) Anze Kopitar became the first Kings player with a four-goal game since 1993, Jonathan Quick stopped 29 shots and Los Angeles beat the Colorado Avalanche 7-1 on Thursday night.

Kopitar was so efficient that he picked up his fourth career hat trick with 7:33 remaining in the second period. He added another goal early in the third. This was the first four-goal game by a Kings player since Luc Robitaille on Nov. 25, 1993, at Quebec.

Tobias Rieder had two goals and Jake Muzzin scored his first goal since Feb. 3. Los Angeles improved to 6-0-2 in its last eight roads games and passed Anaheim for the third spot in the Pacific Division.

Mikko Rantanen scored for Colorado.

LIGHTNING 7, ISLANDERS 6

NEW YORK (AP) - J.T. Miller scored twice, Brayden Point had a goal and two assists, and high-scoring Tampa Bay held off New York.

Anthony Cirelli, Mikhail Sergachev and Victor Hedman each added a goal and an assist, Tyler Johnson also scored, and Braydon Coburn and Yanni Gourde each had two assists.

Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 35 shots for his NHL-leading 42nd victory, extending Tampa Bay's franchise record. The Lightning improved to 12-2-1 in their last 15 games, extending their Eastern Conference and Atlantic Division leads to six points over idle Boston.

Anders Lee, Ryan Pulock and Anthony Beauvillier each scored twice for the Islanders. They lost for the 12th time in 14 games (2-8-4).

SHARKS 2, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 1, OT

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Logan Couture scored 39 seconds into overtime to send San Jose to its season-high sixth straight victory.

Brent Burns also scored and Martin Jones made 24 saves to help the Sharks move within seven points of first-place Vegas with eight games remaining in the regular season. San Jose also opened a four-point lead over third-place Los Angeles in the Pacific Division with a game in hand as the Sharks close in on home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Tomas Tatar scored the lone goal for the Golden Knights, who were kept in the game by a sterling performance by goalie Malcolm Subban. He stopped 42 shots but it wasn't enough for Vegas to come up with the win.

BLUE JACKETS 4, PANTHERS 0.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 33 shots for his fifth shutout of the season, Cam Atkinson had a goal and an assist, and Columbus beat Florida for its 10th straight victory.

Sonny Milano, Seth Jones and Thomas Vanek also scored. The Blue Jackets joined Philadelphia (1984-86) and Pittsburgh (2010-13) as the only teams with 10-game winning streaks in consecutive seasons.

CAPITALS 1, RED WINGS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Philipp Grubauer made 39 saves for his third shutout of the season, and Brett Connolly scored on a third-period breakaway to lift Washington past Detroit Red.

The Capitals have won six of seven and lead Pittsburgh and Columbus by four points atop the Metropolitan Division as the regular season winds down. Washington has turned increasingly to Grubauer of late after Braden Holtby struggled in February and at the beginning of March. Holtby wasn't available Thursday because of an injury coach Barry Trotz described as a tweak.

The Capitals took the lead with 13:19 remaining in the game after Detroit defenseman Xavier Ouellet couldn't control the puck near Washington's blue line. Connolly and teammate Jakub Vrana went the other way on a two-man breakaway, and Connolly beat Jimmy Howard with a wrist shot to the glove side.

MAPLE LEAFS 5, PREDATORS 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Auston Matthews had a goal in his return from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for 10 games and Toronto beat Nashville.

The Predators had been 14-0-1 since their previous regulation loss on Feb. 17.

James van Riemsdyk and Mitchell Marner each had a goal and an assist, and William Nylander and Jake Gardiner also scored for Toronto. The Maple Leafs have won five of six.

Morgan Rielly had three assists for the Maple Leafs, and Tyler Bozak had two. Frederik Andersen stopped 23 shots. Viktor Arvidsson and Scott Hartnell scored for Nashville.

HURRICANES 6, COYOTES 5

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Jeff Skinner scored his second goal with 1:58 left, and Carolina beat Arizonadespite giving up a weird goal when the puck stuck in goalie Cam Ward's skate.

Skinner added an assist, and Valentin Zykov scored two goals, the second tying it at 5 with 10:14 remaining. Phil Di Giuseppe had a goal and two assists, and Jaccob Slavin had three assists. Teuvo Teravainen also scored, and Ward made 28 saves.

Alex Goligoski scored twice, including arguably the most bizarre goal of the season when Ward unknowingly skated across the red line with the puck lodged in his right skate.

Rookie Clayton Keller had a goal and an assist, Josh Archibald and Nick Cousins also scored and Darcy Kuemper stopped 24 shots for Arizona.

OILERS 6, SENATORS 2.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Connor McDavid had two goals and two assists and Edmonton eliminated Ottawa from playoff contention.

Drake Caggiula also had two goals, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Ty Rattie scored and Cam Talbot stopped 33 shots for the Oilers. They were 3-1-0 on a four-game trip.

Matt Duchene and Filip Chlapik replied for Ottawa, and Craig Anderson made 32 saves.

FLYERS 4, RANGERS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Travis Konecny scored twice, Claude Giroux had three assists and Philadelphia Flyers beat New York.

Jakub Voracek had a goal and an assist, and Oskar Lindblom also scored for the Flyers. Jesper Fast had two goals and an assist and Mika Zibanejad also scored for the Rangers.

CANUCKS 5, BLACKHAWKS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Alexander Edler scored twice, Jacob Markstrom made 39 saves and Vancouver beat Chicago to stop a seven-game slide.

Henrik Sedin and Bo Horvat each had a goal and an assist, and Brent Sutter also scored.

Nick Schmaltz and Matthew Highmore scored for Chicago.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Stanley Cup favorite Predators face tough weekend
Monty Andrews

The NHL's top team, and betting favorite to hoist Lord Stanley's mug in June, face a tall task this weekend with road games against a pair of the league's best home teams.

A Devil of a Challenge

The New Jersey Devils no longer control their destiny in the Eastern Conference wild-card competition; they've already spoiled a couple of chances to gain ground, and now have to contend with one of the best teams in the conference as they visit the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night. The Devils have dropped two in a row and entered Thursday's action just one point clear of Florida for the second East wild-card berth - and the Panthers have two games in hand. The Penguins have their sights on bigger things - they trail the Washington Capitals by two points for top spot in the Metropolitan Division, though the Caps have a game in hand.

Predators' Pivotal Trek

The Nashville Predators have the inside track on top spot in the NHL standings heading into next month's playoffs - but they'll face one of their toughest tests of the season this weekend as they embark on a two-game road trip through Minnesota and Winnipeg. The Predators are soaring with wins in 14 of their previous 15 games entering Thursday night's home encounter with the Toronto Maple Leafs - a surge that has them installed at a league-best +360 on Bet365 to win their first Stanley Cup title in team history. But getting four points this weekend will be a tall task, with the Wild and Jets a combined 51-13-9 at home this season.

Wild Weekend

Speaking of the Wild, they'll look to create some breathing room between themselves and the Colorado Avalanche as they host the Predators and Boston Bruins over the weekend. Minnesota enters Thursday just two points clear of the Avs for that all-important third-place spot in the Central Division race, but will need to be at their best against the NHL-leading Predators and a Bruins team that holds the second-best record in the Eastern Conference. Minnesota has dropped back-to-back home games following a four-game winning streak at Xcel Energy Center, but they're just 2-2-0 against Nashville and Boston so far this season.

Player News

* The St. Louis Blues won't have to make do without forward Brayden Schenn, who has avoided a suspension for a dangerous hit on Boston Bruins forward David Krejci. Schenn has 62 points in 73 games; the Blues are 28-10-3 SU when he hits the scoresheet.

* Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews returned to action Thursday in Nashville after missing nearly a month with a shoulder injury. The Maple Leafs performed adequately in Matthews' absence, going 5-3-2 SU and 8-2-0 O/U in that span.

* Pekka Rinne is getting all the attention, but Anaheim's John Gibson hasn't been so bad himself. the Ducks netminder enters Friday 7-2-0 with a 1.90 goals-against average and three shutouts this month; Anaheim is 10-2-0 SU and 6-6-0 O/U in his last 12 starts.

Injury Updates

* Winnipeg Jets sophomore sensation Patrik Laine has suffered a bruised foot and is expected to miss most of the remainder of the regular season. It's a major blow to the Jets - and ends Laine's Rocket Richard Trophy pursuit; he ranks second with 43 goals.

* More bad news for the Chicago Blackhawks, who were officially eliminated from the post-season picture earlier this week. Star center Jonathan Toews is expected to miss at least the next two games as he recovers from an undisclosed upper-body injury.

* The Blues might not have talented winger Vladimir Tarasenko this weekend after he missed the previous two games with an upper-body injury. Tarasenko leads St. Louis with 27 goals but has struggled of late with just six tallies over his last 21 contests.

Stanley Cup Futures

* The Tampa Bay Lightning were the toast of the odds world not long ago, but they've watched the Predators pass them by. That said, the Lightning remain the top Eastern Conference team in the eyes of oddsmakers, installed at +425 to win the title.

* Three other teams sit in triple digits in the Stanley Cup odds department, with the Boston Bruins (+700) next in line behind Nashville and Tampa Bay on Bet365. The Vegas Golden Knights (+850) and Jets (+950) round out the top five.

* A six-game losing skid has the Dallas Stars on the ropes - and oddsmakers are jumping ship on a team that had been a trendy underdog play for part of the season. Dallas comes into Thursday at a whopping +4,000 to capture the championship.

Betting Trends

* Road teams have held their own over the previous seven-day period ending Wednesday, winning 27 of the 53 games outright over that span. But that hot stretch has barely made a dent in the home team's 55.8-percent success rate for the season.

* Over bettors are making a killing over the previous seven-day stretch, with 30 games going above the total compared to 20 going below the number. That has pushed the over total to 106 over the past 30 days, with teams playing 103 unders in that span.

* You're far more likely to hit on an over with at least one Eastern Conference team involved in the matchup. Of the six teams to have recorded at least 40 overs as of Thursday, five reside in the East; Vancouver is the only West team on the list.

Taylor Hall scores in OT, Devils beat Penguins 4-3
March 23, 2018

PITTSBURGH (AP) Taylor Hall beat Matt Murray on a breakaway 27 seconds into overtime to give the New Jersey Devils a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night.

Hall was all alone when Nico Hischier found him with a long lead pass. Hall slipped the puck between Murray's legs for his 33rd goal of the season as New Jersey picked up two vital points in the race for one of the two wild-card spots in the Eastern Conference.

Hall added two assists, Hischier had a goal and an assist, and Blake Coleman and Will Butcher also scored, and Keith Kincaid made 40 saves. The Devils finished 4-2 on a six-game trip.

Sidney Crosby scored his 25th of the season for Pittsburgh. Brian Dumolin and Phil Kessel scored in the third period as the Penguins erased a two-goal deficit.

JETS 3, DUCKS 2, OT

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Kyle Connor scored 3:16 into overtime and Winnipeg Jets edged Anaheim to set a single-season franchise record for points.

Mark Scheifele and Nikolaj Ehlers also scored for the Jets (45-19-10), who won their fourth straight to reach the 100-point plateau for the first time. Winnipeg had 99 points in the 2014-15 season before being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Ducks.

The game was the second straight in which Connor scored the overtime winner. The rookie had both goals in Winnipeg's 2-1 win over Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

Nick Ritchie and Derek Grant scored for Anaheim.

BRUINS 3, STARS 2

DALLAS (AP) - David Pastrnak broke a tie with 12 seconds left and Boston scored three straight goals in the third period to rally past Dallas.

A scramble followed a faceoff in the Dallas end, and Brad Marchand passed to Pastrnak in front. While falling down, he put the puck past Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen.

Tuukka Rask made a season-high 40 saves for the Bruins. Marchand scored Boston's first goal and also assisted on a short-handed goal by Tim Schaller that tied it midway through the third period.

Esa Lindell and Jamie Benn scored for the Stars.

BLUES 4, CANUCKS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Patrik Berglund scored twice and surging St. Louis beat Vancouver for its fourth consecutive victory.

Vladimir Tarasenko and Dmitrij Jaskin also scored for St. Louis. Jake Allen made 19 saves in his eighth straight start. The Blues won for the sixth time in seven games.

Sam Gagner scored for Vancouver. The Canucks have lost eight of nine.

CANADIENS 3, SABRES 0

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Antti Niemi stopped 35 shots for his first shutout in 27 months, and Montreal beat Buffalo to snap a seven-game road skid.

Artturi Lehkonen scored the go-ahead goal by converting a puck that bounced off the end boards 4:56 into the second period. Former Sabres forward Paul Byron and Brendan Gallagher scored empty-net goals 22 seconds apart in the final 1:15 to seal the win.

Since 1987, eight lowest-seeded teams to make the Final Four:

2006? #11-seed George Mason

2011? #11-seed VCU

2016? #10-seed Syracuse

2013? #9-seed Wichita State

2000? #8-seed Wisconsin

2000? #8-seed North Carolina

2011? #8-seed Butler

2014? #8-seed Kentucky

**********

13) Here is our Elite 8: Both #1-seeds won Friday, are now 10-1-1 vs spread in this round the last four years. Rest of the Elite 8? Two #9-seeds, an 11-seed, two 3-seeds and 2-seed Duke.

12) Duke 69, Syracuse 65? Duke won first meeting 60-44; teams combined to go 8-43 in that game. This game snuck over total; teams combined to go 9-39 on arc, but Duke was 20-28 on foul line as they held on at the end.

Turns out that Jim Boeheim?s last game as a Syracuse player was a 91-81 loss to Duke in the NCAA tournament back when the game were televised in black-and-white. Boeheim played at Syracuse with the great Dave Bing, who was a really good player with the Detroit Pistons.

11) Villanova 90, West Virginia 78? Mountaineers went 7-28 on the arc; they lost seven of last nine games this season when shooting less than 35% on the arc. Villanova plays better defense than you?d think. And they have multiple guys who make 3-pointers- they were 13-24 here.

10) Kansas 80, Clemson 76? If you had the Jayhawks (-5), this was brutal. Clemson rallied back from a 62-42 deficit with 11:00 left and cut lead to 4 with 0:04.5 left, called timeout, but never fouled after Kansas inbounded the ball. Very bad beat for Kansas backers.

Bill Self is 8-2 in Sweet 16 games at Kansas; he is 2-5 in regional finals.

9) Texas Tech 78, Purdue 65? Teams that make the Final Four sometimes make it because they get lucky; Purdue big man Haas couldn?t play because he broke his elbow last week, which made the Boilermakers a far less formidable opponent.

Purdue made 11-24 on arc when they beat Butler without Haas; they were 7-18 in this game, and took only six foul shots the whole game.

8) How #11-seeds (or lower) have done in regional finals:
2017? Xavier (+8.5) L83-59 vs Gonzaga
2014? Dayton (+10.5) L52-62 vs Florida
2011? VCU (+11.5) W71-61 over Kansas
2006? George Mason (+8) W86-84 over UConn
2002? #12-seed Missouri (+6.5) L75-81 vs Oklahoma
2001? Temple (+6.5) L62-69 vs Michigan State
1990? LMU (+5) L131-101 vs UNLV

4-3 vs spread, all as underdogs, with two SU wins.

7) Random trend; over last 20 years, in the West Region final, underdogs are 16-4 against the spread. Michigan is -4.5 over Florida State in Staples Center tonight.

6) Generally, if an 8 or 9-seed gets this far, they had to beat the #1-seed to get here, but not this year because UMBC pulled their upset. Here is how #8 or #9-seeds have done in the Elite 8:
2014: Kentucky (-2.5) W75-72 vs Michigan
2013: Wichita State (+6) W70-66 vs Ohio State
2011: Butler (+3.5) W74-71 Florida OT
2004: Alabama (+8.5) L87-71 vs UConn
2000: North Carolina (+2.5) W59-55 vs Tulsa
2000: Wisconsin (+1) W64-60 vs Purdue
1998: Rhode Island (+4.5) L79-77 vs Stanford
1994: Boston College (+1.5) L74-66 vs Florida

6-2 vs spread, 5-3 SU

5) Dayton Flyers went 14-17 this season, its first losing season in 12 years; they had only one senior, but since the season ended, five other players have left the program, two to explore pro possibilities, three others to transfer to other schools.

Next season?s Flyers will be very young, and will take time to get to know each other.

4) Took the NHL?s Pittsburgh Penguins 25 years to get 100 points in a season; Las Vegas Golden Knights have done it in their first year in the NHL, a tremendous accomplishment.

3) As you know if you read this space at all, I watch a ton of sports on TV, but one thing I?ve lost my appetite for is pre and post-game shows and halftime shows. Mostly they just exist to amuse the people who are on the show, and usually, there are too many people on them anyway.

Highlight shows late at night? Still enjoy them.

2) Traded Marcell Ozuna for Madison Bumgarner in my fantasy baseball league this winter; Bumgarner broke his left pinkie Friday when he was hit by a line drive. Bleepin? awesome.

Of course, guy who hit the ball that broke his finger is on my team, too. No bueno.

1) On a happier note, Sunday night is the last Sunday night in 2018 without football or baseball, so thats a good thing.

Avalanche edge Golden Knights 2-1 in shootout
March 24, 2018

DENVER (AP) Gabriel Landeskog beat Marc-Andre Fleury with a nifty move in the shootout, and the Colorado Avalanche kept expansion Vegas from clinching a playoff spot by beating the Golden Knights 2-1 on Saturday.

Semyon Varlamov stopped all three Vegas attempts in the shootout. He finished with 39 saves, including seven in overtime.

Carl Soderberg was back on the ice after missing two games with an illness and contributed with a first-period goal. Colorado remains in the thick of the Western Conference playoff picture after getting its 26th home win, tied for third-most in Avalanche history.

The Pacific Division-leading Golden Knights are on the doorstep of earning their playoff spot and a win over the Avalanche would've wrapped it up. Fleury, back in net after sustaining an undisclosed injury Tuesday, made 29 saves.

Jonathan Marchessault tied the game early in the third for Vegas, moments after Fleury made an incredible save.

DEVILS 2, LIGHTNING 1

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Keith Kinkaid made 35 saves and the New Jersey Devils took another major step toward making the playoffs for the first time since 2012 with a victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Nico Hischier and Kyle Palmieri scored for New Jersey, which has elevated its playoff chances with wins in five of seven games - including outstanding efforts in beating the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins and the Eastern Conference-leading Lightning on consecutive nights.

Andrei Vasilevskiy had 29 saves as the Lightning lost for only the third time in 16 games (12-3-1).

CAPITALS 6, CANADIENS 4

MONTREAL (AP) - Evgeny Kuznetsov and Tom Wilson each scored twice and Nicklas Backstrom had four assists as Washington defeated Montreal.

Jay Beagle and T.J. Oshie also scored for the Capitals, who strengthened their grip on first place in the Metropolitan Division. Backstrom posted his 20th career game with at least four points and second this season.

Charles Hudon scored twice for Montreal. Alex Galchenyuk and Brendan Gallagher each had a goal for the Canadiens, who are 2-8-2 in their last 12 games.

Canadiens goalie Carey Price struggled in his second start since returning from a concussion.

PANTHERS 4, COYOTES 2

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Denis Malgin snapped a tie with 3:45 left and Florida overcame a two-goal deficit by scoring four times in the third period to rally past Arizona.

Vincent Trocheck had two goals and an assist for the Panthers, who remained three points behind New Jersey for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Florida has two games in hand on the Devils.

Jamie McGinn added an empty-netter with 14 seconds to play.

Clayton Keller and Richard Panik scored for the Coyotes, and Derek Stepan had two assists.

In a matchup of backup goalies, James Reimer made 26 saves for the Panthers while starting in place of an ailing Roberto Luongo. Darcy Kuemper stopped 43 shots for Arizona.

RANGERS 5, SABRES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Jimmy Vesey had two goals and an assist, Alexandar Georgiev stoped 43 shots, and the New York Rangers completed a sweep of the teams' three-game season series.

Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad and Neal Pionk each added a goal and an assist as the Rangers improved to 13-3-0 in the last 16 meetings with the Sabres.

Sam Reinhart spoiled Geogiev's shutout bid with 4 1/2 minutes remaining for the Sabres, who have lost four straight. Robin Lehner gave up four goals on 12 shots before being replaced near the midpoint of the second period. Linus Ullmark came on and stopped 10 of the 11 shots he faced.

Kreider and Vesey each scored in the first before Pionk got his first NHL goal early in the second and Zibanejad made it 4-0 with his team-leading 27th at 8:45 of the second. It gave the Rangers goals on four consecutive shots for the first time since Jan. 3, 2015, also against the Sabres, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

BLACKHAWKS 3, ISLANDERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Anton Forsberg stopped 30 shots to help the Chicago snap a five-game losing streak.

Patrick Kane and Brandon Saad scored in the second period, and Brent Seabrook added an empty-netter for the Blackhawks.

John Tavares scored late in the third period and Jaroslav Halak finished with 22 saves as the Islanders lost for the fifth time in six games and 13 in their last 15 (2-9-4).

Chicago was eliminated from postseason contention for the first time since 2008 following its 5-1 loss to Colorado on Tuesday, and pushed the struggling Islanders to the verge of being knocked for the second straight year.

SHARKS 5, FLAMES 1

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Evander Kane scored twice to give him six goals in his past two games against Calgary, and San Jose won its seventh straight overall.

Kane followed up his four-goal performance in Calgary a week ago with another impactful performance, scoring a short-handed goal in the second period to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead and an insurance goal in the third. He got into a scrum with Mikael Backlund and a fight with Travis Hamonic.

The Sharks improved to 10-2 since acquiring Kane just before the trade deadline last month, including this current streak that is the longest for San Jose since a seven-game run from March 25 to April 5, 2013.

Brenden Dillon, Jannik Hansen and Justin Braun also scored for the Sharks. Martin Jones made 37 saves.

Michael Stone had the goal for the Flames, who have lost five straight and fallen way behind in the playoff race.

HURRICANES 5, SENATORS 2

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Phillip Di Giusseppe and Jordan Staal each had a goal and assist to lead Carolina.

Brock McGinn, Noah Hanifin and Jeff Skinner also scored, and Cam Ward stopped 34 shots to help preserve the Hurricanes' slim playoff hopes. Carolina remained nine points behind New Jersey, which also won, for the last wild card in the Eastern Conference with seven games remaining.

Bobby Ryan and Thomas Chabot scored for the Senators, and Mike Condon finished with 19 saves.

Ottawa captain Erik Karlsson made an emotional return to the ice, playing for the first time since he and his wife announced Tuesday that their son Axel had been stillborn. A visibly moved Karlsson waved as he received a huge ovation from the home crowd when announced as part of the

MAPLE LEAFS 4, RED WINGS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Nazem Kadri scored with 7:26 left in regulation, helping the Maple Leafs extend their club-record home winning streak to 13 games with a victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

Kasperi Kapanen, Connor Brown and William Nylander had the other goals for Toronto, which also tied a franchise mark with its 45th win.

Frederik Andersen made 38 saves for the Maple Leafs, who split a two-game road trip earlier this week against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Nashville Predators.

Dylan Larkin, Tyler Bertuzzi and Frans Nielsen scored for Detroit and Jimmy Howard made 25 saves.

BLUES 2, BLUE JACKETS 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Jake Allen made 33 saves, Alexander Steen scored on St. Louis' first shot of the game, and the Blues stopped the Columbus Blue Jackets' 10-game winning streak.

Vladimir Tarasenko also scored for St. Louis, which has won five in row. The Blues have also won four straight games on the road and earned points in four of their last five away from home.

The win was Allen's 26th of the season and seventh in his last eight games. Allen leads the NHL with 10 shutouts on the road since the start of the 2014-15 season.

Sergei Bobrovsky, who gave up two goals on 28 shots, lost for the first time since March 2. Cam Atkinson had the lone goal for the Blue Jackets, and appeared to have scored another earlier in the game but had it waved off because he had made a kicking motion with the puck.

WILD 4, PEDATORS 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Devan Dubnyk stopped 19 shots and Jason Zucker scored his 30th goal and added an assist to lead the Minnesota Wild past the Nashville Predators.

Joel Eriksson Ek, Nino Niederreiter and Zach Parise also scored for the Wild, who overcame a slow first period to outwork the West's top team and hand the Predators their second straight loss. After taking only six shots in the opening period, the Wild offense outshot Nashville 24-11 the rest of the way to start a crucial stretch of three games in four days.

Pekka Rinne had 26 saves and Ryan Johansen scored his 13th goal for Nashville, which couldn't rebound from a loss at home to Toronto on Thursday that snapped a four-game win streak and franchise-record 15-game point streak.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Over/under totals for pitching wins this year:

16.5 Max Scherzer

15.5 Justin Verlander

14.5 David Price

13.5 Kyle Hendricks

13.5 Noah Syndergaard

12.5 Johnny Cueto

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Random weekend stuff?..

13) Loyola, Chi 79, Kansas State 62? Much like #11-seeds George Mason in 2006 and VCU in 2011, who both came from the CAA, Ramblers come from the relative obscurity of the MVC to make the Final Four. No one saw this coming.

Not only has Loyola won four NCAA tourney games, they had to win the MVC tournament or they would?ve been playing in the NIT.

Ramblers didn?t have to play #2-seed Cincinnati after the Bearcats blew a 22-point lead to Nevada. #1-seed Virginia lost to a damn #16-seed, and Loyola took advantage of all that.

Loyola?s first three NCAA tournament wins were by total of four points:
? Ramblers were down 60-55 with 2:46 left in first round vs Miami.
? Loyola needed a lucky bounce on a jumper with 0:03.6 left to nip Tennessee, 63-62
? Loyola was down 20-8 early against Nevada, hung on at the end of its 69-68 win.

12) By way of comparison, two of George Mason?s four NCAA tourney wins in 2011 were by double figures- they were an underdog in three of the four games.

VCU had to win an additional play-in game, but four of their five NCAA tourney wins were by double figure margins- they were an underdog in all five of those wins.

11) A final question on the George Mason/VCU thing; does Porter Moser jump for bigger money? He?ll be in demand. Neither coach at Mason/VCU bolted right away.

In 2006, Jim Larranaga was coach at George Mason; he went 107-59 at Mason the next five years, then jumped to Miami, the ACC and a lot more money.

In 2011, Shaka Smart was VCU?s coach; he went 109-35 the next four years before going to Texas and the big $$$ of the Big X.

10) Michigan 58, Florida State 54? Seminoles went 8:00 without a basket down stretch, then made some questionable decisions on who to foul in last 1:30.

Unusual stat; in the West Region final the last 21 years, underdogs are 17-4 vs spread.

9) I love a good coincidence; USC just hired an assistant basketball coach who has two sons, both of whom are 6-10 or taller and are both in high school. Go figure.

Trojans hired Eric Mobley, an AAU coach for the last 11 years. From ESPN.com:

?His oldest son, Isaiah, is a 6-foot-10 high school junior and the No. 44-ranked prospect in the Class of 2019, while his youngest son, Evan, is 6-foot-10 and considered one of the top players in the country in the Class of 2020.?

I wonder where they?ll go to college?

8) Steph Curry is out with Grade 2 MCL sprain; he might be back for the start of the playoffs.

7) Ferris State 71, Northern State 69? Fun game to watch, for the D2 national title.

Ferris State?s president played the clarinet in the school band during this game. I?m guessing the university president at Kentucky or Duke doesn?t still play in the school band.

Ferris State?s mascot is a bulldog; I?m disappointed they?re not the Ferris Wheels.

6) Dustin Johnson hit a golf ball 489 yards Friday; seriously, he was on a 573-yard par-5 and was 84 yards from the hole for his second shot.

5) It bothers me when baseball teams shift and leave third base totally uncovered; they?re just giving up a base hit to anyone with the basic ability to bunt.

I can see doing it against powerful lefties like Bryce Harper or Freddie Freeman, but against guys who aren?t so great, to me it is just overthinking something that is fairly simple. Maybe the analytics people are trying to justify their position by micromanaging too much.

4) Apparently it costs $30 to park at A?s games this season; for their four home games with the Giants, it?ll cost $50 to park unless you say ?Go A?s!!!? at the gate. Trolling Giants? fans seems a little immature. Paying $30 to park seems a bit excessive.

3) There are rumors around that Gonzaga will be jumping from the WCC to the Mountain West as early as next season, which would give the MW an even dozen teams. Gonzaga is supposed to announce their decision in the next two weeks.

2) #1-seed Kansas is an underdog to Duke today; the previous nine #1-seeds who got points in the regional final went 2-7 SU, 3-6 against the spread.

1) Few years ago, I was at an AAU basketball tournament at Bishop Gorman HS in Las Vegas; I?m sitting in bleachers watching this game when one of the coaches takes his cellphone out while play was going on, looks at a text message, then glares at the couple sitting in front of me and says:

?If you text me again, he?ll never get in!!!!?

Can?t make stuff like that up.

Jets clinch playoff spot with shootout win over Nashville
March 25, 2018

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Mark Scheifele scored the only goal in a shootout and the Winnipeg Jets clinched a playoff spot with a 5-4 win over the Nashville Predators on Sunday night.

The Jets are in the postseason for the first time since 2014-15 and just the second time since their relocation from Atlanta before the 2011-12 season. The franchise hasn't won a playoff series since 2007.

Jets rookie Kyle Connor scored a power-play goal and had two assists, giving him seven goals in six games. That includes a pair of overtime goals in Winnipeg's previous two games and gives him 29 on the season. That's tied with Vancouver's Brock Boeser for the rookie goal scoring lead. Boeser's season ended March 5 with a fracture in his lower back.

Dustin Byfuglien also scored on the power play, and Bryan Little and Blake Wheeler each added a goal and an assist for Winnipeg.

Kyle Turris, Ryan Ellis, and Viktor Arvidsson each had a goal and an assist, and Roman Josi also scored for the Predators.

PENGUINS 5, FLYERS 4, OT

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Bryan Rust redirected a pass from Sidney Crosby 2:25 into overtime and Pittsburgh finished off a season sweep of Philadelphia.

The Flyers tied it on Sean Couturier's goal with 43 seconds left in regulation, but the Penguins controlled the extra period. Rust ended it when he got his stick down in time to get a piece of Crosby's pass from the top of the left circle and knock it by Petr Mrazek to give the Penguins their first sweep of Philadelphia since the 2006-07 season.

Crosby's spectacular goal 17 seconds into the third period gave Pittsburgh a 4-3 advantage. Crosby held off Couturier high in the zone, skated to the left dot and ripped a wrist shot over Philadelphia defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and Mrazek's glove. Couturier exacted a bit of revenge when he knotted it late to assure the Flyers of at least a point.

Still, the Penguins pulled within three points of first-place Washington in the Metropolitan Division and moved two points clear of Philadelphia, which pulled into a third-place tie with Columbus.

BRUINS 2, WILD 1, OT

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Brad Marchand scored 28 seconds into overtime to lift Boston over Minnesota.

Tuukka Rask made 24 saves and David Pastrnak also scored for the Bruins, who improved to 47-17-10.

Marchand got his second goal in two games and his third in a four-game span. His 33rd of the season was his eighth game-winner, tying a career high. Marchand also assisted on the first goal.

Minnesota has earned a point in five straight games. Alex Stalock got the start in net after Devan Dubnyk started Saturday's win against Nashville. Stalock made 26 saves.

CANUCKS 4, STARS 1

DALLAS (AP) - Reid Boucher and Nic Dowd scored rare goals on the power play, and Vancouver rallied to beat reeling Dallas.

Dallas' Mattias Janmark started the scoring with a short-handed goal in the first period, but Boucher tied it on the same man advantage. It was Boucher's third goal this season, all coming over two games in Dallas.

Jake Virtanen added a third-period goal and Tyler Motte scored into an empty net for Vancouver, which won for only the second time in 10 games.

The Stars are on an 0-6-2 skid and have all but fallen out of playoff contention.

DUCKS 5, OILERS 4, OT

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Hampus Lindholm scored 1:21 into overtime to lift the Anaheim Ducks over the Edmonton Oilers.

Adam Henrique had two goals and Josh Manson and Corey Perry also scored for the Ducks, who are on a 5-0-1 streak.

Connor McDavid, Ty Rattie, Leon Draisaitl and Ethan Bear scored for the Oilers, who ended a three-game winning streak.

Anaheim has 91 points and is two up on the Los Angeles Kings (89) for third in the Pacific Division.
