Quote of the Day

?Hopefully, I prove what coach said was wrong and put myself in position to get back as soon as possible,. But right now, who knows? Just try to do my job in the rehab process and get back as soon as I can.?
Stephen Curry, hoping to return before the 2nd round of the NBA playoffs

Monday?s quiz

Where did Klay Thompson play his college basketball?

Sunday?s quiz
QB Mark Sanchez (2009) was the last offensive player the Jets drafted in the first round.

Saturday?s quiz
Lance Alworth, the great WR from the Chargers, was the first player from the AFL inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Monday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

13) Kansas 85, Duke 81 OT? Jayhawks were 13-36 on arc in this game, 17-33 inside the arc; Newman scored 32 points and Kansas is headed to the Alamo for the Final Four.

Grayson Allen went 3-13 in his last college game; Mavin Bagley was 5-9 in 44:00- if you?re coaching Duke, you?re sick that Bagley got only nine shots in a game this close, especially since he?ll never play for Duke again.

12) Villanova 71, Texas Tech 59? Wildcats were 29-35 on foul line; Tech was 14-18 in game where teams combined to go 9-44 on arc. Villanova is in Final Four for second time in three years; they?re 11-1 in last 12 NCAA tournament games.

11) Final Four pointspreads:
Michigan (-5.5) over Loyola-Chicago
Villanova (-5) over Kansas

10) Since 1987, when two #1-seeds play in the national semifinals, the underdogs are 8-2 against the spread.

9) Was thinking about Gonzaga?s potential move to the Mountain West; I have no idea why they would do that. Gonzaga doesn?t have football, so their TV deal for basketball would only net them an additional $375,000 a year? not much at all.

Mountain West is a better league, but hardly a power league; only reason they got two teams in the NCAA?s this year is because Nevada got beat in the conference tournament. Gonzaga is the king of the WCC; its good to be the king- they?re like UNLV was in the Big West during the peak years of Jerry Tarkanian?s coaching tenure in Las Vegas.

To me, adding Gonzaga would really help the Mountain West, not sure how it helps Gonzaga.

8) Saturday night, Florida State was down 58-54 in the last 0:15; they missed a 3-pointer, then didn?t foul in the last 10 or 11 seconds, and Michigan ran out the clock.

The non-foul occurred right in front of the FSU bench; it seemed like someone on the bench told the Seminole player not to foul, so they let the game end, despite a foul giving them a (very small) chance to win the game. A small chance is still a chance; it happens. Ask Louisville.

As you know, I spend a ridiculous amount of time watching college basketball; can?t remember a situation like this happening before, especially a team whose season ends with a loss. Why give up?

Leonard Hamilton wasn?t happy when he was asked about it after the game. If I was the AD at Florida State, I?d be asking him about it again when we met back in Tallahassee.

7) Duke was down five with 0:11 left in OT Sunday; unlike Florida State, they fouled.

6) Atlanta Braves cut P Scott Kazmir, eating $16M he is owed this year. Kazmir had a rough outing Saturday, blamed it on a 90-100 bullpen session he threw Wednesday, saying he didn?t know he?d be pitching Saturday. Now he is out of a job, though he still gets paid.

5) Phillies gave 2B prospect Scott Kingery a 6-year, $24M contract, which eliminates service time as an issue in making Kingery a major leaguer right now.

Lot of teams delay bringing their prospects up to the majors, to delay their arbitration years from kicking in.

4) Then there is Arizona, which sent OF Yasmany Tomas down to AAA, despite owing him $46M over the next three years. RF Stephen Souza is on the DL and they still sent Tomas down, which tells us they?re pretty sour on him.

3) Twins? coach Howard Johnson, the old Mets? 3B, broke bones in his face this weekend when he was hit by a foul ball in the Minnesota dugout. Hope he is feeling better soon.

2) I?m still wondering why the Red Sox fired Terry Francona; Boston averaged 93 wins a year under Francona, winning two World Series with no losing seasons- they were 90-72 his last year, albeit with some off-field hijinx that had people saying Francona ran too loose a ship.

They?ve won one World Series in six years since he left and now have an entry-level manager in Alex Cora. Curious decision.

1? Mets manager Mickey Callaway is the 49th major league pitcher who later became a major league manager. Pitching is obviously the most essential element of baseball; you?d think more former pitchers would?ve become managers.

The San Jose Sharks enter the week as the hottest team in the league, having won seven consecutive games to move to within six points of the Vegas Golden Knights for top spot in the Pacific division.

You can't fault the Vegas Golden Knights for looking in their rear view mirror a little bit. The streaking San Jose Sharks have won seven consecutive games and will visit Sin City this coming Saturday night. Covers dangles at the hash and goes bar down to give NHL bettors a breakdown of what to watch for this week on the ice.

Sharks Lurking

Don't look now, but the San Jose Sharks have streaked their way into the Pacific Division title picture as they prepare for a pivotal stretch of road games beginning Monday night against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Sharks enter the week as the hottest team in the league, having won seven consecutive games to move to within six points of the Vegas Golden Knights; both teams have seven games remaining. San Jose will play three games in three different cities over the next four nights - it travels to St. Louis on Tuesday before facing the Predators in Nashville on Thursday. The Sharks are +1,050 to pass the Golden Knights and win the division.

Connor vs. Columbus

The Columbus Blue Jackets saw their 10-game winning streak come to a heartbreaking end over the weekend - and getting back in the win column won't be an easy task as they face scorching-hot Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night. McDavid has taken over the league lead in scoring as he seeks his second consecutive Art Ross Trophy despite only turning 21 last January. The Blue Jackets dropped a 2-1 decision to the St. Louis Blues but remain in the hunt for top spot in the Metropolitan Division. But they'll need to watch out for McDavid, who had four points in his previous meeting with Columbus.

Panther Playoff Push

It's a critical week for the Florida Panthers, who are on the outside of the Eastern Conference playoff picture as they face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night. The Panthers enter the week three points back of the New Jersey Devils for the second wild card spot in the East, but have two games in hand - and could do themselves a major solid by using one of those to upend the Maple Leafs, who have all but sewn up third place in the Atlantic Division. It's the last of four regular-season meetings between the teams, with Florida owning a 2-1 advantage; all three games have gone under, and have been settled by one goal.

Player News

* The Calgary Flames will be without star forward Johnny Gaudreau, who has left the team to attend to a family matter and won't be in the lineup Monday vs. Los Angeles. Gaudreau has a team-best 82 points for the Flames, who are +30,000 to win the Cup.

* The Winnipeg Jets have added one of the top U.S. college prospects in the sport, signing Hobey Baker nominee C.J. Suess to an entry-level contract. Suess racked up 22 goals and 21 assists in 40 games with Minnesota State this past season.

* Senators forward Matt Duchene says he will consider signing a contract extension with Ottawa despite missing the playoffs this season. Duchene started slowly following his trade from Colorado but has 25 points in 27 games since the All-Star break.

Injury Updates

* The Boston Bruins finally got some good news on the injury front as forward Patrice Bergeron returned to the lineup Sunday for the first time in a month. The Bruins, who went a red-hot 9-2-2 SU without Bergeron, are still down four key players due to injury.

* Tobias Enstrom's disappointing 2017-18 campaign has gotten even worse, with the Jets ruling the veteran defenseman out for the rest of the regular season with a lower-body injury. Enstrom, who has six points in 43 games, might return in the postseason.

* The Blues have lost some depth on the back end following a season-ending ACL injury to veteran defenseman Carl Gunnarson. St. Louis is installed as a +2,800 longshot to win its first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history.

Stanley Cup Futures

* It remains a two-horse race for the best Stanley Cup odds entering the second-last week of the regular season. The Nashville Predators are the front-runners on Bet365 at +400, with the Tampa Bay Lightning remaining in close pursuit at +440.

* With star center Auston Matthews in the fold, the Maple Leafs will likely be one of the trendier plays at +800, fourth-best behind Nashville, Tampa Bay and Boston. The Winnipeg Jets and expansion Vegas Golden Knights are next in line at +900 each.

* Don't sleep on the Los Angeles Kings, who have proven to be a very difficult out in years past even when squeaking into the postseason. The Kings carry whopping +3,000 odds to win their third Stanley Cup title in the previous seven years.

Betting Trends

* Betting on home favorites might not be the most exciting play, but it has certainly been the most lucrative over the past month's worth of games. Home faves have converted at nearly a 67-percent rate over the 30-day period ending Saturday.

* It appears that the over will prevail in what has been an incredible season-long totals battle. Entering the final two weeks of the season, teams have played 572 overs - good for a 50.6-percent share - compared to 558 overs.

* The battle for "best under play of the year" will likely come down to either the Blues or the Anaheim Ducks; both teams entered Sunday's action with a league-high 45 under conversions. Tampa Bay leads the over charge with 47 games above the total.

Ovie nets NHL-best 45th, Caps top Rangers
March 26, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 45th goal and the Washington Capitals extended their winning streak to four games with a 4-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Monday night.

T.J. Oshie, Matt Niskanen and Evgeny Kuznetsov also scored for Washington. Nicklas Backstrom, who had four assists in a win over Montreal on Saturday, added two more to give him 44 this season. Philipp Grubauer made 28 saves.

Washington increased its lead to five points over two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh for first place in the Metropolitan Division.

Lias Andersson scored in his NHL debut and Mats Zuccarello added a goal for the Rangers.

The Capitals scored four goals in the first period and cruised from there.

PANTHERS 3, ISLANDERS 0

Evgenii Dadonov had a goal and an assist, and James Reimer stopped 32 shots for his fourth shutout of the season as Florida moved closer to a playoff spot by blanking the reeling New York Islanders.

Keith Yandle also had a goal and an assist, and Nick Bjugstad scored to help Florida win for the 13th time in 17 games (13-3-1). The Panthers moved within a point of idle New Jersey for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. They have eight games remaining, one more than the Devils.

Reimer, who has 21 career shutouts, won his fifth straight start with his second shutout during that stretch. The 30-year-old goalie improved to 7-1-0 since returning from an injury Feb. 12.

Christopher Gibson finished with 38 saves for the Islanders, who were eliminated from postseason contention for the second straight year with their 14th loss in 16 games (2-10-4).

COYOTES 4, LIGHTNING 1

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Clayton Keller had a goal and an assist to lead Arizona over Tampa Bay.

The Coyotes got two goals from defensemen as Trevor Murphy and Jacob Chychrun each scored to help Arizona improve to 17-12-6 since January. Brendan Perlini also scored for the Coyotes, and Antti Raanta had 19 saves.

Chychrun scored the winner on the power play at 17:22 of the second period.

The Lightning played without captain Steven Stamkos, who missed the game with an undisclosed lower-body injury. Tampa Bay has lost consecutive games for the second time in 10 days. Since scoring seven goals against the New York Islanders on Thursday, the Lightning have two goals in two games.

CANADIENS 4, RED WINGS 2

MONTREAL (AP) - Brendan Gallagher scored twice, including his 30th goal of the season, and Carey Price snapped a seven-game losing streak as Montreal defeated skidding Detroit.

Paul Byron and Alex Galchenyuk also scored for the Canadiens in a matchup of Original Six franchises already eliminated from playoff contention. Price made 26 saves for his first win since Feb. 4. He had been 0-5-2 since then.

Gustav Nyquist and Tyler Bertuzzi scored for Detroit, and Jared Coreau stopped 27 shots in his fifth game of the season. He is 0-4-0.

The Red Wings have won just once in their last 14 games (1-12-1).

HURRICANES 4, SENATORS 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Warren Foegele had a goal and an assist in his NHL debut, and Carolina beat Ottawa.

Brock McGinn and Valentin Zykov scored 98 seconds apart in the second period, Sebastian Aho had an empty-netter with 1:59 remaining and Derek Ryan had two assists to help the Hurricanes win their third straight.

Bobby Ryan scored and Craig Anderson stopped 26 shots for the Senators, who lost their fifth straight and have been outscored 22-7 in their last four. The Hurricanes beat them twice in three nights by a combined 9-3 score.

Cam Ward made 19 saves for Carolina, which recalled Foegele from its AHL affiliate in Charlotte during a day off Sunday.

SABRES 3, MAPLE LEAFS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Jack Eichel scored his second goal of the game midway through the third period to help last-place Buffalo end Toronto's club-record home winning streak at 13 games.

Casey Nelson had the other goal for Buffalo, which got 39 saves from Chad Johnson to end a four-game slide. Zemgus Girgensons added two assists.

Patrick Marleau had a goal and an assist, and Nazem Kadri scored for Toronto. Frederik Andersen made 24 stops for the Leafs, who were also looking to set a franchise mark for victories in a season with 46.

SHARKS 4, BLACKHAWKS 3, SO

CHICAGO (AP) - Kevin Labanc scored the deciding goal in the fourth round of a shootout and San Jose beat Chicago for its eighth straight victory.

Labanc almost pulled to a stop in front of Blackhawks goalie Anton Forsberg, faked and then lifted in a nifty backhand. Logan Couture also connected in the tiebreaker for the surging Sharks, whose winning streak is their longest in seven years.

Chicago's Patrick Sharp tied it at 3 with 2:22 left in the third period. Tomas Hertl had put the Sharks ahead 3-2 just 1:57 earlier.

San Jose's Evander Kane scored his 28th goal - his eighth in 13 games since being acquired from Buffalo at the trade deadline. Marcus Sorensen also had a goal for the Sharks.

Rookie forward Alex DeBrincat scored his 26th goal and had an assist, and Connor Murphy scored his second for the last-place Blackhawks, who have lost six of seven.

Martin Jones made 28 saves through overtime and stopped three of four Blackhawks in the shootout.

Turris scores lone goal in shootout as Preds beat Wild 2-1
March 28, 2018

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Kyle Turris scored the only goal in the shootout to lift the Nashville Predators over the Minnesota Wild 2-1 Tuesday night to snap a three-game skid.

The win clinched the Predators home-ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs. They also moved three points ahead of Tampa Bay in the chase for the Presidents' Trophy and home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.

Roman Josi scored for Nashville, and Pekka Rinne made 22 saves.

Rinne turned away Nino Niederreiter in the shootout. Zach Parise's attempt went wide left, and Rinne stopped Mikko Koivu to clinch it.

Eric Staal tied it for Minnesota with 3:15 left on his 40th goal this season.

Devan Dubnyk made 28 saves as Minnesota snapped a five-game point streak. The Wild still won the season series against Nashville, 3-2.

JETS 5, BRUINS 4, SO

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Patrik Laine scored the deciding goal in the shootout, Brandon Tanev had his first career hat trick and Winnipeg beat Boston to cap a perfect six-game homestand.

Joe Morrow had his first goal for Winnipeg since being acquired from Montreal last month, and sixth of the season. Adam Lowry had two assists.

Ryan Donato, Danton Heinen, David Pastrnak and Torey Krug had goals for the Bruins, who scored three power-play goals. Krug added one assist and Brad Marchand had two.

Connor Hellebuyck made 28 saves to pick up his 40th win for the Jets. It was also their seventh straight victory at home.

Anton Khudobin also stopped 28 shots as Boston ended a four-game road trip 2-0-2.

CANUCKS 4, DUCKS 1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Brandon Sutter had two goals and an assist to lift Vancouver.

Alex Biega got his first goal in over three years, and Sam Gagner also scored for Vancouver, which has won three of four since losing seven straight. Jacob Markstrom stopped 23 shots.

Andrew Cogliano scored for the Ducks, who wrapped a four-game trip and are on a 5-1-1 stretch.

The loss dropped Anaheim into a tie with the Los Angeles Kings for third in the Pacific Division, though the Kings have a game in hand. The teams play Friday night.

BLUES 3, SHARKS 2, OT

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Vladimir Tarasenko scored his second goal of the game in overtime to lift St. Louis over San Jose.

Tarasenko got a pass from Vladimir Sobotka and tipped in the winner at 2:33. It was Tarasenko's 31st goal, and he has 30 or more in four consecutive seasons.

St. Louis has won a season-best six straight games. San Jose had won eight straight.

Oskar Sundqvist also scored for St. Louis, and Jake Allen made 22 saves.

Evander Kane and Joe Pavelski scored for San Jose. Aaron Dell stopped 29 shots.

DEVILS 4, HURRICANES 3

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Stefan Noesen scored on a rebound with 1:33 to play and New Jersey continued its playoff push.

Kyle Palmieri had two goals and an assist and Taylor Hall had three assists for the Devils, who have won three straight and six of eight. Pavel Zacha also scored and Keith Kinkaid, who has supplanted Cory Schneider as the No. 1 goaltender, made 31 saves.

New Jersey extended its lead to three points ahead of idle Florida for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference, with the Panthers having played two fewer games. Carolina is nine points back.

Phil Di Giuseppe, Warren Foegele and Noah Hanifin also scored as the Hurricanes had a three-game winning streak snapped despite taking a 3-2 lead early in the third period. Scott Darling was outstanding making 41 saves, but Carolina's slim playoff hopes faded a little more.

BLUE JACKETS 7, OILERS 3

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Thomas Vanek had three goals and an assist to lift Columbus over Edmonton.

Artemi Panarin, Boone Jenner, Cam Atkinson and Markus Nutivaara also scored for the Blue Jackets, who have won 11 of 12. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 22 shots.

Connor McDavid had a goal and two assists, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Drake Caggiula also scored for the Oilers, who have lost two straight. Cam Talbot stopped 13 of 18 shots before being replaced by Laurent Brossoit.

Edmonton got on the board 3:37 into the first period when a mix-up behind the net between Bobrovsky and Nutivaara allowed McDavid to steal the puck and send it out front to Nugent-Hopkins for his 22nd of the season. McDavid picked up his 100th point, tying his league-leading total from last year.

RED WINGS 5, PENGUINS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Luke Glendening scored twice, Darren Helm matched his career high with three points and Detroit beat Pittsburgh.

Helm had a goal and two assists, and Frans Nielsen and Niklas Kronwall also scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made 22 saves to help the Red Wings win in regulation for the first time since a 3-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Feb. 24.

Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang scored for the Penguins. Matt Murray stopped 21 shots.

STARS 3, FLYERS 2, OT

DALLAS (AP) - Alexander Radulov scored 40 seconds into overtime as Dallas beat Philadelphia to end an eight-game winless streak.

Tyler Seguin passed from the right side across to Radulov, who beat goalie Petr Mrazek.

The Stars were 0-6-2 during their longest stretch without a win since moving to Dallas in 1993. With five games left, the Stars are five points back for the final playoff berth.

Philadelphia extended its points streak to six games (3-0-3) and remained two points ahead of New Jersey for the Eastern Conference's top wild card.

ISLANDERS 4, SENATORS 3

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Andrew Ladd scored the tiebreaking goal late in the third period to lift New York over Ottawa.

Anders Lee, Anthony Beauvillier and Brock Nelson also scored for the Islanders, who won for just the third time in 17 games (3-10-4). Jaroslav Halak stopped 33 shots.

Matt Duchene, Erik Karlsson and Bobby Ryan scored for Ottawa, which has lost six straight for the second time this season. Mike Condon finished with 27 shots.

*****************************

Wednesday?s List of 13; Mid-week musings??

13) I love numbers, but the analytics revolution in baseball is overdone. There is no way you can quantify a player?s value to the team with a single number? too many variables are involved that cannot be and never will be able to be measured. Here is one example that actually happened:

Two years ago, Player A and Player B were teammates; Player A was getting paid to wear a certain make of spikes, but he wasn?t wearing them. One day, while Player A was talking to the sales rep from the company that was paying him, Player B comes over and tells the sales rep that Player A isn?t wearing his company?s spikes. A fight ensues in the clubhouse.

Player B gets his ass kicked and goes on the DL; Player A gets suspended and the team suffers, since they weren?t very good to begin with and they were now without two decent hitters.

So, analytics people, quantify that for me; make that a part of WAR, when a guy is such a cruddy teammate that his teammate is provoked into kicking his butt!?!? These players live/travel together from March-September. Being a good teammate is an underrated variable.

12) March 22, 2014, the Astros released JD Martinez, just let him walk. He?s hit 128 HR?s in the four years since, and now makes $22M a year in Boston. Astros are now World Champs, despite giving away a player of Martinez? ability- they?ve won 271 games the last three years. Go figure.

11) Pitt Panthers named Duke assistant Jeff Capel their new head basketball coach; he was previously head coach at VCU, Oklahoma before spending seven years as a Duke assistant. Capel was 79-41 as VCU?s coach (50-22 in conference), 83-69 at Oklahoma (33-43 in conference).

10) Detroit Lions team president Rod Wood said a main reason Detroit didn?t win its bid to host the NFL Draft this year was a date conflict at Ford Field with a robotics convention. Oy.

Detroit also has to start the 2018 season on the road because Ford Field is booked for a concert on September 9? Ed Sheeran, whose concert tour is messing with the first half of the NFL schedule in several cities.

9) When basketball Hall of Famer Bill Walton was in high school/college, he once went 5.5 years without losing a game. His HS team won its last 16 games his junior year and he didn?t lose again until the second half of his senior year at UCLA.

8) Las Vegas Golden Knights were 500-1 to win the Stanley Cup when their first NHL season started back in October. Now they?re 7-1 to win the Cup. Best expansion season ever in any of the four major sports.

St Louis Blues made the Stanley Cup finals in 1968, but that was when the league expanded from 6 to 12 teams and the six new teams were all in the West, so one of them had to make the finals.

7) Interesting quirk to this year?s baseball schedule; A?s visit San Francisco the last three games before the All-Star break, then the Giants visit Oakland the first three games after the break.

6) Louisville paid a search firm $150,000 to find its new athletic director- they wound up hiring the guy who was the interim AD. So they gave a search firm $150K to hire the guy who was already in the job. Something is amiss??.

5) Speaking of the Cardinals, Louisville hired Xavier coach Chris Mack as its new basketball coach, which is a kick in the teeth to the Big East. Mack is a Xavier alum who was a 2-year captain of the Musketeers, but as the saying goes, ?Whenever you don?t think its about the money, remember: Its always about the money.?

Mack was making just under $1.7M a year at Xavier; he?s making $4M now. His wife is from Louisville, but the $4M was the deal-maker, for sure.

4) Does New Jersey Giants coach Pat Shurmur have special insight into college players in this year?s draft? His son Kyle is Vanderbilt?s quarterback, who played against NC State LB Bradley Chubb in the 2016 independence Bowl. Giants may very well draft Chubb next month.

3) Butler/Florida will play a home/home basketball series the next two years; the series was negotiated by the two head coaches??on Twitter. Welcome to 2018.

2) ESPN had a mike on Mookie Betts while he was playing right field for the Red Sox Tuesday; as a ball was hit over his head into the corner, he says, ?I ain?t getting this one, boys.? They were talking to him in between pitches while the game was going on. Good TV, but one more example of how spring training might be a little too long.

1) Former major league catcher Paul Loduca was on TVG as a horse race handicapper; he likes gambling. Here are his over/under team win total picks for 2018:
Twins, over 83.5 wins
Red Sox, over 91.5 wins
Rockies, over 81.5 wins
Cardinals, under 86 wins

Lightning stops 3-game slide with 7-3 win over Rangers
March 30, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Brayden Point and Cedric Paquette each scored two goals, and the Tampa Bay Lightning stopped a three-game slide with a 7-3 victory over the New York Rangers on Friday night.

J.T. Miller added a power-play goal in the third period as Tampa Bay regained first place in the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference with 108 points. Dan Girardi also scored against his former team, Alex Killorn had a goal and an assist, and backup goalie Louis Domingue made 28 saves.

The Lightning fell from the top spot for the first time since mid-October when they lost to the Bruins on Thursday night.

New York rookie Filip Chytil got his first NHL goal. Chris Kreider and Brady Skjei also scored for the Rangers, and Ondrej Pavelec made 43 saves.

AVALANCHE 5, BLACKHAWKS 0

DENVER (AP) - Sven Andrighetto scored twice for Colorado, and Semyon Varlamov stopped 30 shots before leaving in the third period with an apparent injury.

Tyson Barrie, Mikko Rantanen and Tyson Jost also scored for an Avalanche team that remains in contention a season after finishing with a league-worst 48 points.

Varlamov was cruising along until a Chicago player ran into his left pad with 6:25 remaining. Jonathan Bernier came in and finished the Avalanche's 27th home win, which is tied for second-most in franchise history.

Colorado coach Jared Bednar had no update on Varlamov's status after the victory.

Collin Delia stopped 31 shots for Chicago.
