Where it is real F ing COLD
Code blue this morning.

Patient was a 67 year old man with history of obesity (around 350 lbs), hypertension, hyperlipidemia, fatty liver, COPD, insulin dependent diabetes, and admitted with Covid.

He struggled all night on the bipap. Confused, pulling it off, being anxious, etc. He then had a rhythm change and looked to be having a MI. It was finally decided he needed to be put on the ventilator. He was intubated successfully, but he went into vtach. Initial resuscitation efforts were successful, but as happens often, his heart stopped again, and he didn?t make it.

Chest compressions are hard anyway, but when the patient is obese like this, they are near impossible. We had a group of 6 rotating in and out since it is so hard. This guy has covid, so we are all wearing double masks or a PAPR, plastic isolation gowns, and of course gloves. I tapped out after three rounds of two minutes (of compression). When I took off my PPE, I looked like I had jumped in a pool. I was soaked in sweat and exhausted. Your reality as a nurse now are these terrible working conditions. I hate covid.

PS. I got vaccinated today. I was/am scared of it, but I don?t want to end up like this guy if I can prevent it. Guess I?m a pussy. No problems so far 8 hours post vaccination.

This is exactly what happened to my friend in his 60s who died 2 days ago..

My friend who was 37 went into V tach and died too.

These people let their symptoms slide and did not get early treatment.

Are you seeing this being a big downfall where you are working?

Hard to begin to fathom what you guys wade through every day.

Almost a year now, and no end in sight.

2020/2021 will be a package deal.

Be well, Nick!

I can't imagine.

I see people that need to go on the ventilator but refuse then crash and die when they might not have. Not so much a big downfall (not seeking timely treatment) though Bc not much helps except simply supplemental Oxygen.

Nick, I can?t believe they shutdown the Er and put you all in the ICU!! Glad you quit that bs! Unsafe is a great word for how I have felt the care was many times, but that was going on before covid with my jobs.

Cover, my job is always travel/agency, but I do see the core staff getting $5 an hour extra working with covid patients, and the current hospital gives them a Kroger gift card for $100 for every 4 hours they work extra and double time instead of time and a half for overtime. Nice incentives I think. Prior job did nothing though.

Hazard pay would be nice, but I don?t see it happening...
