I was sitting here thinking with the upcoming release fo Vanilla Coke about the soft drinks of the past that did not last very long for obvious reasons.

Here are a few that come to my mind and what I thought about them.

New Coke: I was about 10 years old when this stuff came out so I really could not appreciate the difference in taste, because anytime I was allowed to have pop it was a treat to me. Maybe some of you "old-timers" out there can tell us the difference in taste.

TAB: That stuff was just God Awful. My Grandmother always had a garage full o' that crap and it tasted kinda like soda water with dish soap, Equal for sweetner and a tablespoon of molasses.

7UP Gold: This crap came out when I was in the 7th grade I think and lasted for about 2 years. I remember the Shameful commercials they used to pedal this stuff with the tune "Wild Thing" playing in the background and a wolf that howled on Cue. I remember this stuff having the color of Ginger Ale and tasting like somebody mixed Coke and 7up together and put a bunch of cinnamon in it. It also came in these really hideous looking gold and green cans. I think the guy that came up for the idea for that chit is probably working in the evisceration section of a poultry plant today!

Crystal Pepsi: Man what an abortion! It did not taste like pepsi but kinda had a mutant creme soda/cola taste. I felt real guilty when I drank that stuff. I would have preferred some sugar free Kool Aid. No wonder places were giving this stuff away for free...

Aspen: I was a real little kid when this stuff was around (Early 80's). But if I hated it then I surely would rather have a glass of piss now. It tasted like those real fake apple candies you get. Just awful.

Mr. Pibb: I don't know if they still make this stuff or not, but for one it had a hideous ziggy lookign mascot on the can. 2. If you don't like Dr. Pepper consider this the stepbrother of Dr. Pepper. Taste like sour prune juice.

Cherry Cola slice: Hmmmmmmmmmmm. I would rather drink Diet Mtn Dew.

RC Cola: I don't know if they still make this stuff anymore but it tasted like Cough Syrup.

Diet Rite: RC minus sugar. Taste like unsweetened Cough Syrup.

There are many others, but I will leave those to you

On the course!
Mr Pibb is still around, and it is a great substitute for Dr Pepper, if you can't get it.

RC or Royal Crown cola is good too, iMO

I remember little 10 ounce bottles of Ting soda when I was younger, and can's of Jolly Good, and Shasta.

Go back 15 years ago and RC Cola was the best tasting cola. Then they changed the recipe or something and it hasn't tasted the same since.

How could I have forgotten Shasta? I loved some of the names they came up with for their substitutes of drinks (Mtn Dew, Dr Pepper).

I remember when that stuff was 10cents a can when I was in High School. And when you whipped out a can of shasta from your lunch bag you were not considered "cool" in elementary school.

I used to be guilty of drinking RC, cuz their 20 oz were always 39 cents for the longest time when I still lived in Nebraska.

Mr Pibb is regional.. i think its pretty darn tasty in small doses.

How about Hubba Bubba Bubblegum soda?!!! I was in the 7th grade when that stuff came out and thought it was a super neat can... unfortunately, it tasted like someone had been chewing on bubble gum and had filled the soda can with their spit.

Do they still make Orange Crush over here? Believe it or not when I was in Kuwait last summer you could find it there and all over the middle east. Crush had a bunch of other flavors too like Strawberry, Grape and I think Pina Colada.

I don't think there is a better rootbeer than Hires.

Do they still make Jolt Cola???

HONUS,

If you still lived in Wisconsin, you could get it!

...not a valid reason to move to Wisconsin, but that's just my opinion. ;)

...now that I think about it, I can't come up with any reason to move to Wisconsin.

...this is me if I were to ever find myself in Wisconsin -------> kurby (...headed back to good ole Tennessee as fast as my bare feet could get me there.)

...just giving you a hard time, yyz. :thefinger

...there are only two things that scare me....

One is nuclear war....

...and the other?

Huh?

What's the other thing that scares you?

Carnies. You know? Circus folk....small hands...smell like cabbage. :bigear:

p.s. Must be hard to separate the good folk in Fond du Lac from the carnies every summer, huh? :jump:

Well now, I will show my age. I remember when Falstaff Beer used to be the official beer of the Chicago White Sox, when Harry Carry was the voice of the White Sox (before he went to the Cubs). Harry loved his Falstaff. Then, when the big generic craze set in, remember when the cans where white with balck letters, and all they said was what was in the can, for instanse, beer just said BEER, that was made by Falstaff. How about the old cheap beers we drank back in the 70's. Black Label, Meister Brau, Pfieffer, Rheinlander, Point, Fox Deluxe, Red White & Blue, Walters, Blatz, etc. Back then, Pabst and Schlitz were on tap at almost every bar here in Wisconsin. Now things have changed. Leinenkugels used to be considered a cheap local beer, but now has gone national and is considered a premeium beer.

Crush is tough to get but can be done. long story but i saw some last year in DC.

How about Moxie? That gets my vote for worst drink/best ads... with Ted Williams and some classic ads, but sure must be an acquired taste.

Lots of drink I guess are regional. I'm actually rather fascinated by this when I travel around. Hadn't seen Tab in quite some time but ran into a lot in spring training in Florida.
