Shohei Ohtani, who just hit for the cycle, has a 1.517 OPS since June 4. Only Christian Yelich's is higher. I don't think anybody expected him to be this good a hitter. Not this quickly, at least.

Reds starter Jim Maloney, who strikes out 18 batters, no-hits the Mets for ten innings, but loses 1-0 when Johnny Lewis connects for a homer in the eleventh in the Crosley Field contest. In August at Wrigley Field, the right-hander will once again give up no hits through the first nine innings, but this time will record a no-hitter when his teammate Leo Cardenas connects in the top of the tenth, providing the only run in Cincinnati's 1-0 victory over Chicago.

Nolan Ryan, throwing an unbelievable 235 pitches, whiffs 19 batters in 13 innings, including Cecil Cooper six consecutive times, in the Angels' 4-3 victory over Boston in 15 innings in Anaheim. The right-hander's performance will be the first of three 19-strikeout outings the Texan throws this season.

In the first of two consecutive no-hitters he will hurl, Johnny Vander Meer keeps the Boston Bees hitless in Cincinnati's 3-0 victory at Crosley Field. The Reds' southpaw, in the first night game played in Brooklyn, continues his no-no mojo four days later by beating the Dodgers, 6-0, without giving up a hit in the Ebbets Field contest.

In the first night game played in New York City, Johnny Vander Meer pitches his second consecutive no-hitter, beating the Dodgers at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field, 6-0. Four days ago, the Reds' southpaw held the Braves hitless in a 3-0 victory at Crosley Field.

Brewers' pitcher Jim Abbott, born without a right hand, gets the first hit in his 11-year career when he connects in the fourth inning for a rbi-single off Jon Lieber in the team's 11-4 victory over the Cubs at County Stadium. The southpaw didn't bat playing for the Angels and the Yankees due to the designated hitter rule in the American League.

For the first and only time in a career that spans 1,787 contests, Joe DiMaggio strikes out three times in a game. Indians' hurler Mel Harder does the deed in the Tribe's 5-4 victory over the Yankees at Cleveland Stadium.

Here is what Dominican Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez answered when I asked him if he had any concerns as to whether the international community would believe the explanation of David Ortiz's shooting as a case of 'mistaken identity': "We presented irrefutable audio and video evidence today. Science is science, evidence is evidence. These facts are undisputed; the rest is speculation."

Dominican Attorney General Jean Alain Rodr?guez: "The target of the hit was not to be David Ortiz, it was another individual that was in the same place and the same table and by coincidence was dressed similar to David that night. This confusion happened because of a picture that was taken minutes before the attack and circulated between one of the masterminds and the contract killers."

Collegiate football standout Bo Jackson, who will eventually spend four seasons with the Oakland Raiders, signs to play baseball with the Royals, the defending World Champions. The Auburn running back had been drafted first overall in the 1986 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the Heisman trophy winner turns down the Buccaneers' more lucrative offer when the team refuses to let him play two sports.

At Forbes Field, Jackie Robinson steals home in the Dodgers' 4-2 victory over the Pirates. It is the Brooklyn infielder's first thievery of the dish, something the rookie will accomplish 19 times during his ten-year career.

by 1949 Jackie Robinson is MVP of the NL

Shohei Ohtani threw 40 pitches off a mound, then singled and doubled in his first two at-bats, and man I really hope this guy can be a two-way player all of next year. So cool to watch

Tigers first baseman Norm Cash plays an entire game without recording a put out in the team?s 10-6 loss to the Twins at Minnesota?s Metropolitan Stadium. Six strikeouts, sixteen balls caught in the air, and two fielder choices account for the 24 outs made by the home team.

watch a game for that to occur again...:0003

I spoke to many Red Sox and Yankees players about the short distance to center, just 385 to dead center field, and many of them said that while it's short, since London Stadium is built to Olympic standards, with little or no air movement, it's difficult to get the ball over the 16-ft wall.

After hitting an apparent grand slam in the top of the second inning, Tim McCarver is credited with only a three-run single when he passes teammate Garry Maddox on the basepaths in the Phillies' 10-5 victory over the Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium. The other base runners are allowed to score on the Philadelphia catcher's 'grand slam single' because only the player who passes his teammate is called out and there were less than two outs.

The legendary verse detailing the Cubs' double-play combination of Tinker to Evers to Chance, entitled That Double Play Again, is published for the first time. When the 'New York Evening Mail' republishes the same poem six days later, the newspaper will use the title by which the poem is best known today, Baseball's Sad Lexicon
