1989In his second start after coming back from cancer surgery, left-hander Dave Dravecky breaks his arm when he throws a wild pitch to Tim Raines in the sixth inning of the Giants' 3-2 victory over Montreal at Olympic Stadium. The 33 year-old Youngstown, Ohio native, who will be credited with the win, collapses to the ground, clutching his left arm in severe pain after the humerus bone snaps midway between his shoulder and elbow, with the sound of the bone breaking clearly audible throughout the ballpark.

1964Due to a misunderstanding caused by Mickey Mantle misinforming his teammate that their manager Yogi Berra had asked for the harmonica to be played louder, a confrontation occurs on the back of the team bus between the skipper, who had actually asked for the music to stop, and utility player Phil Linz. Some believe the well-publicized incident fired up the third-place team, who had just lost four consecutive games to the White Sox in Chicago, to a successful pennant run, but may have reinforced the perception Berra had lost control of the team, leading to his dismissal after Game 7 of the World Series.

made headlines across every sports page in America..Was a tuff gritty WS against St.Louis. Whitey Ford got ruffed up in Game 1 & Gibson gave up 4 earned in Gm. 2 loss ..Bouton beat Simmons 2-1 and and Gibson went 10 innings for a win game 5.. Cards bullpen w/Schultz imploded in Game 6 now... Game 7 that cost unfairly cost Yogi his job Stottlemyre who started and Downing who relieved him could not get a Redbird out.Gibson pitched another 9 innings in the 7-5 win with Yanks getting 2 in the top of the 9th via homers from Boyer [Clete of course not his brother Ken who is playing 3rd base for the Redbirds] and light hitting Harmonica boy Phil Linz ..Yogi got the short end of the stick...

the real kick in the pants ....Johnny Keane who managed the Cardinals in the World Series against him took his job the with the Yankees...he didn't last 2 seasons before GM Ralph Houk took over...

we hated the Yankees in my house...........but they were fun to watch and keep track of..

but not as much fun as the Dodgers...

1967Twelve year-old Robert Stratta throws the eighth no-hitter in Little League World Series history when Chicago's Roseland North team beats Rota, Spain in the quarterfinals, 1-0. The future transplant surgeon doesn't allow the ball to leave the infield, retiring the last 11 batters he faces, eight on strikeouts.

1956Prior to the Old Timers' Game at Yankee Stadium, shortstop Phil Rizzuto is asked to consult with general manager George Weiss and manager Casey Stengel concerning a player move necessitated by reacquiring Enos Slaughter off waivers from the A's. After making several suggestions about who should be cut from the squad, the veteran infielder is told by Weiss he is the player about to be let go.

1939At Brooklyn's Ebbets Field, NBC televises the first major league game in history on experimental station W2XBS, covering a doubleheader split in which the Reds win the first game, 5-2, and the Dodgers take the nightcap, 6-1. The network employs two cameras, one behind home plate, showing a wide view of the field, and the other on the third base line to capture the plays at first base.

2001Former major league catcher Crash Davis, whose name was the inspiration for the main character of the 1988 hit movie Bull Durham, dies at the age of 82 after a yearlong bout with cancer. In the movie, which was ranked #1 as the greatest sports film of all time by Sports Illustrated, Kevin Costner portrays "Crash" as the veteran backstop of the Durham Bulls brought in to help a rookie pitcher reach the big leagues by sharing his experiences on and off the field.

1953With Giants manager Leo Durocher yelling "stick it in his ear", Ruben Gomez hits Carl Furillo, the National League's leading hitter, on the wrist by a pitch. After taking first base, the Dodgers right fielder bolts into the opposing dugout to choke 'Leo the Lip', but in the melee, the knuckle on his little finger is fractured, putting an end to his season.

When the game becomes official in the middle of the fifth inning, the new 'Iron Man' takes a victory lap around Camden Yards during the 22-minute standing ovation from the sellout crowd, including President Bill Clinton.

Graig Nettles will be suspended for ten days after stuffing his bat with six super balls, that are collected by Tigers catcher Bill Freehan when the piece of lumber is shattered on a disallowed infield hit. The Yankee third baseman, who said the doctored bat was given to him by a fan in Chicago, hit a home run in his first at bat for the game's only run in the Yankees' 1-0 victory over Detroit at Shea Stadium.

Jimmy Stewart, a former major league player who became a great scout, once said, smiling, of Bo Jackson?s amazing talents, ?I saw him hit a ball 500 feet. He ran and caught it before it hit the ground, then he threw the ball back to the plate on the fly.? #bestofalltim
