Red Sox outfielder and future Hall of Famer Harry Hooper becomes the first major leaguer to start both games of a doubleheader with a home run. The feat will not be repeated until 1993, when A's leadoff hitter Rickey Henderson opens each game of a twin bill against Cleveland with a homer.

60 years between the times a leadoff hitter hits a homerun
to start both games of a doubleheader

and there were more double headers years ago......

The fans, using new computerized punch cards as ballots, will once again select the All-Star squads. For the past twelve seasons, the decision was made by managers, coaches, and players as a result of the Reds rooters stuffing the ballot box in 1957 to elect all but one of their starting position players to the Mid-Summer Classic.

Reaction late Wed. to foul ball injury in Hou., from Jana Goldbloom Brody, whose mother died last year after she was hit in the head in L.A.: "It's unconscionable that fans are still getting hurt by hard-hit foul balls and MLB has not increased the netting requirements; even after a foul ball caused a brain hemorrhage and my mom's death in August at Dodger Stadium." "We see not only the fans, but the players are traumatized by the horror and damage?this new sad injury (that) happened today, on my birthday, may be a message from my mom, Linda, to speak out once again and keep demanding more ballpark safety."

The Astros use their top pick, the No. 1 overall selection, to draft Cal State Fullerton infielder Phil Nevin over Derek Jeter, a shortstop from Kalamazoo Central High. Houston, aware of the huge bonuses given to the previous top draft picks, possibly did not select the future Hall of Famer, drafted sixth overall by the Yankees, because the team believed the high school standout was seeking a bonus of at least $1 million to forego playing baseball at the University of Michigan.

The first publication of Ernest L. Thayer's poem Casey at the Bat appears in the San Francisco Examiner. The work is originally published under the pen name 'Phin' because the poet feels embarrassed by what he considers to be bad verse and decides to keep his identity a secret until others come forward to claim the work to be their own.

Indian right-hander Dennis Eckersley's consecutive no-hit inning streak ends at 22.1 innings, two-third of a frame shy of Cy Young's major league mark, when Mariner Ruppert Jones goes deep in the bottom of fifth in the Kingdome contest. The centerfielder's home run will prove to be the only run Cleveland gives up, coasting to an easy 7-1 victory in Seattle.

At Connie Mack Stadium, Sandy Koufax throws his third no-hitter in three years, blanking the Phillies 3-0. The Dodgers' southpaw, who will add a perfect game to his resume next season, joins Bob Feller as the only other modern major leaguer to pitch three career hitless games.

The Rangers, bypassing future Hall of Famers Dave Winfield and Robin Yount, select high school pitching phenom David Clyde, who was 18-0 as a senior with fourteen shutouts and five no-hitters, in the first round (1st pick) of the amateur draft. The 18 year-old Westchester High School (Houston, TX) standout will be pressed into immediate service as a starting pitcher for Texas, winning only seven games in 25 decisions during his three seasons with the Lone Star State team.

Joining Lou Gehrig, Everett Scott, Billy Williams, and Joe Sewell, Dodger infielder Steve Garvey becomes only the fifth player in major league history to play in 1,000 consecutive games. The first baseman, establishing a National League record, will appear in 1,207 consecutive games, before the streak ends next season when he breaks his thumb in a collision at home plate, playing for the Padres.

Shortstop Alcides Escobar wasn't in the Kansas City Royals' starting lineup Sunday and his consecutive games played streak ended at 421, which was the longest active streak in the majors.

It's the first game he missed since Sept. 25, 2015, when Royals manager Ned Yost rested several starters against the Cleveland Indians after his team clinched the AL Central title the night before.

With Escobar sitting, the San Diego Padres' Freddy Galvis holds the longest active consecutive games streak. He has played in 255 straight, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Atlanta Braves' Freddie Freeman is next on the list with 98 consecutive games played.

White Sox reliever Marv Rotblatt becomes the first pitcher to be driven in from the bullpen when he enters the game in the 8th inning to face the Yankees in a 4-2 loss at Comiskey Park. At the present time, transportation to the mound is only for White Sox pitchers, but later in the season, the team will provide the visiting bullpen hurlers with a black Cadillac, which has been supplied by a local funeral home.

Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock, and Frank Thomas hit four consecutive homers in an inning off Reds' pitchers Jim Maloney (2) and Marshall Bridges (2), making the Braves the first major league team to accomplish the feat. The seventh inning big fly barrage, another blast by Mathews, and one by Warren Spahn aren't enough, when Cincinnati still manages to win the Crosley Field contest, 10-8.

if you were there that day you never forget it..

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh at Metropolitan Stadium, the Twins erupt for the first five-home run inning in American League history. Rich Rollins, Zoilo Versalles, Tony Oliva, Don Mincher, and Harmon Killebrew all go deep to give the Twins a 9-4 victory over the A's.

they hit 144 that year....ranked 6 out of 10 teams in the AL

Killebrew had 39 of them..

that was 1966 ..nobody had anything for the O's

Yankees first-round draft pick Anthony Volpe called choosing the Yankees over Vanderbilt (where he had been committed) the "hardest decision of my life." But the ability to sign with the major league team he's long dreamed of playing for, sent his decision over the edge. And yes, he wore No. 7 in high school because his grandfather was a big Mickey Mantle fan. The most memorable advice he got today came from Brett Gardner: "he told me not to throw my helmet."

In the first of two consecutive no-hitters he will hurl, Johnny Vander Meer keeps the Boston Bees hitless in Cincinnati's 3-0 victory at Crosley Field. The Reds' southpaw, in the first night game played in Brooklyn, continues his no-no mojo four days later by beating the Dodgers, 6-0, without giving up a hit in the Ebbets Field contest.

At the age of 43, Ranger Nolan Ryan no-hits the A's, 5-0, becoming the oldest player to throw a no-hitter, extending his major league record to six. The 'Ryan Express' becomes the first player to throw one in three different decades and to accomplish the feat for three different teams.
