Would someone please convince me not to play New York tonight? Everyone is on San Francisco tonight, and the line is moving that way. I have seen +4 at a couple of books. The line opened at +2 1/2. The Niners appear to be the obvious play to me. San Francisco made the playoffs last season with a 12-4 record. The Giants finished with a disappointing 7-9 record. All of the so-called experts are predicting San Francisco will battle St. Louis for the division crown. Those same experts aren't predicting the Giants to do much of anything. Even here in New York City, the sports writers are predicting a relatively easy San Francisco victory tonight. I know that Tiki Barber is banged up, and that New York will be starting a rookie place kicker, but don't you think those two variables have been accounted for in the line? I anticipate that the line will go up even further between now and kickoff. Too good to be true? You know what they say about those games. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Good luck tonight!

I say the Giants suck and Niners are for real. This matchup is one sided all the way. Only thing I can think of that could lose this game for us niners backers would be of course the evil - turnovers

This is from a post I wrote up last night:
Of course it's just my opinion............

"Giants starting a lot of new faces on the offensive line. Will be interesting to see if they can open holes for Barber and Dayne. If not then Collins has to put it up. The Giants just lost Pochman for the season. He was their starting placekicker and Field Goal kicker. Matt Bryant will assume these duties. He was signed this past Tuesday.

49er's were 2nd in the league in rushing yards per game with 140 yards per game. Garcia has developed into a very fine quarterback, but more importantly a field leader.

The 49er's last year were 12-4 and the Giants were a dissapointing 7-9 last year after challanging for the Super Bowl the year before. These teams are going in different directions.

Don't be suprised if this game is over by halftime. SF has the ability to put up points fast. New York's offense seems to have geared their themselves in the direction of "3 yards and a cloud of dust". Too much inexperience on the Giants offensive line to consistently open holes for the Giants running backs this early in the season.

My last point is turnover ratio. Last year the 49er's were 1st in the league and the Giants were 18th. This stat shows that
the 49er's seem to find a way to create oppertunities.

San Francisco by 17 points"

The Giants starting center is out this week so the will have a new face running the show in the middle. As I have stated before, when capping a close game like this I think the CENTER is one of the most important positions on the field. Not QB, not RB, but the center. In this case I was already on SF, but if not this would be a difference maker for me.

Ace,

have never really given too much thought to your center reasoning, but makes some sense.

Would you rather be talking snaps from moon1 with better experience, or :moon: who has not seen much game time. Timing could be off. Thanks for the insight.

C Ziegert has been projected to miss the opener for awhile. it has been a real possibility since training camp.

The 2 new centers, Bober and Smith, have at least practiced C since training camp.
Offensive line: With center Dusty Zeigler (knee) definitely out, the line is thin and untested. A key will be how veteran Luke Petitgout does in his first time out at left tackle, where he will face rising defensive end Andre Carter. Chris Bober will be making his first start at center and must take on the formidable duo of Bryant Young and Dana Stubblefield at defensive tackle.

I feel kicker is a more important loss, not just for field goals, but kickoffs as well.

The special teams carousel took another bizarre turn Tuesday when kicker Owen Pochman was put on injured reserve with a knee problem and replaced by Matt Bryant, who entered training camp as just an extra body and shockingly was elevated to the starter for the opener after being released Friday and signed to the practice squad early Tuesday.

The team decided Bryant was as good as any young kicker available on the waiver wire, and it was reluctant to sign a veteran and be committed to his full salary for the season.

Bryant looked pretty good on kickoffs in preseason, but he is extremely untested as a field-goal kicker. He last made a field goal in a game that counted for Baylor in 1998. He was cut by the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena League after a preseason game a couple of years ago.

If Bryant flops, the team could look to a veteran for Week 2, or it could try another young kicker such as Danny Boyd, who signed with the practice squad Tuesday.

Kicker and Center

Taken seperately I would consider these to be two very minor issues. Taken together, they are huge. Bryan is going to be asked to step into this huge, emotionally charged spotlight and step up Week 1?

As far as the center goes, they control everything. The snap timing, the run blocking, the pocket protection, it begins and ends right there. No, he may not be as important as the QB, but I would certainly put him right up there.
