makes an excellent point.......isn`t everybody tired of trying to play the blame game....after 9/11,everything changed...
the 9/11 commission is a sham....it`s an embarrassment.....particularly the idea that the commission has to interview individuals behind closed doors and in front of a television camera.....pure politics
there were numerous reasons for invading iraq(although it`s legitimately debatable whether or not it was warranted).....not just wmd`s....and after one year,to say the wmd issue is dead is a little short sighted....iraq is the size of texas....and i did read an article about bad things happening to some iraqi scientists....this issue may not yet be over....time will tell.....
but there is the issue of preemption(this guy attempted to build nuclear reactors with french and german help in the early 90`s)...the total disregard for u.n. mandates(the entire u.n. and our congress thought that wmd`s were there).....middle eastern stability(the war with iran...the invasion of kuwait.....the burning of the oil fields.....the gassing of the kurds...the mass murder...the attempt on bush sr`s life....the paying of suicide bombers......the attempt at building multiple nuclear reactors in the early 90`s).....the security of israel(does anybody think that bush or any american can use the security of israel to justify invading iraq?....only if you really do want a full fledged holy war on your hands)....even if the security of israel is tied directly to middle eastern and oil security.....the guy did lob scuds into israel(39 of `em) as they sat by with their hands folded during the gulf war....and the guy has proclaimed that he wants to destroy israel.....a full blown middle eastern holy war could have cataclysmic repercussions...
By Middle East correspondent Frank Gardner(april 2000)
""""""Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has said his country could destroy Israel if it was given access to land next to the Jewish state.
On Wednesday, Iraq's state controlled newspapers carried the president's threat, which he made following the recent bloody clashes between Israelis and Palestinians.
Iraqis are calling the threat one of the strongest statements by Saddam Hussein in years.
An idle boast or a serious threat to Israel? With Iraq's unpredictable leader, it is hard to tell.
The government controlled press quoted the president as saying Iraq could put an end to Zionism in a very short time if only it was given a piece of land next to Israel.
That is highly unlikely to happen, but Iraq did physically attack Israel during the Gulf War nine years ago by firing 39 Scud missiles at the Jewish state.
Iraqis say the clashes over the last few days between Israeli forces and Palestinians have enraged their president.
Angry outburst
On Tuesday he was seen on television banging his fist on the table in anger, criticising Arabs for not doing enough in response to Israeli killings in the Palestinian territories.
He said the great people of Iraq were ready to destroy Zionism right now and he called on Arabs to brandish their swords and make the sacrifices needed.
Iraq has also been calling for a holy war to liberate Jerusalem from Israeli control. President Saddam Hussein has said Iraq did not need to wait for sanctions to be lifted before striking Israel.
The United States says it closely monitors Iraq for any signs of military activity, but United Nations inspectors looking for Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction have not been in the country for nearly two years now. """"""
and lets be honest...oil security IS a valid reason for any action necessary...
what`s unforgivable is that the administration just isn`t laying out their case totally.....i can make a better argument for invading iraq than they seem to be making...
and, undertaking such a monumental task either without having an endgame and/or totally misreading the extent of insurgency that might result is incompetent.....i hate to say it,but it`s true...
i also read that rumsfeld claimed that we knew where the wmd`s were.....what a blunder....how long did the damn u.n. debacle drag on?.......plenty long for saddam to hide or ship the damn things out....
in my humble opinion, iraq will never be turned into a democracy.....or at least, not for long.....
but,it is time that we take the fight to the terrorists....i applaud gwb for keeping america safe after 9/11(for now) and taking the fight to the terrorists...even if fighting terrorism is a very small part of any rationale for regime change and occupation in iraq......
p.s....i think gore`s a clown but the guy did invent the internet...:brows:
