Did anyone else see that article on golf in the USA?. Golf merchandise sales fell 28% from last year. The number of people who play golf in the age groups 18-30 dropped 35 in the last 10 years. More courses closed than opened last year for the8th straight year. On the average 137 courses closed every year since 2011.

doesn't surprise me..

hardest game I ever tried to get just average at..

found out real quick it's a game ya gotta play w/someone quite a while who can correct the mechanical errors .

1 day a week was a wate because ya can't get the muscle memory down that way..

range and greens don't provide the competition so issues w/focus..

and on top of that..way way way to expensive a game for the lower middle class to play..

like any other sport..ya want growth..eventually ya gotta make it affordable to the masses.

real shame..great game..and it teaches more than most know about politeness and etiquette[sp:facepalm:]

Thanks Mr Poon,

Interesting, while we have seen 2 courses close in this region over the past 2 years, as well as the local Golf Galaxy close up, I see alot of interest from my 21 year old son, and all his buddies. Part of the problem may be margins, I'd bet that 90% of the rounds they played last year were booked thru golfnow and similar websites, at deeply discounted rates.

Some of the private courses around here have been a little more liberal as far as non member play. Our league plays at a public Pete Dye course, which also owns a private club, and to entice us to play at the public course this year we will be able to play the private course once a month.

Hopefully the trend will turn around!

Golf thriving on Long Island. Sometimes I wish it wasn't. 6 hour rounds on 4 out 5 of Bethpage courses. When you approach a tee box and there are two foursomes already there....that sucks.

I could not golf a 6 hour round and waiting that long between shots. No way. Most rounds we play are 3.5 hours, at worst 4.
