I ordered glasses and they cost me $435 out of pocket :142smilie

I took them back after about a week. I couldn't get used to them and went back to contacts exclusively.

WOW THANKS TO ALL.
Heres what I was involved in and bet the guy 5 bucks that he was wrong. He was telling/saying that folks that did not have insurance could not get service. He said they will be turn down unless it's a emergency. He also said anyone can buy cheap insurance for less then $50 a month no copays no deducts. I asked for name of that company and was it avaliable in all 50 states. He will never find that to be true. And I'm sure the guy will never pay up. But I will let him read this info and educate him.
Thks.

You can get care at an E.R. without insurance. Most of the pt's we see do not work or have insurance.

And actually the other day a gentleman was told to go to the e.r. for "free charity", which is b.s. but anyway You can get care. Odds are you will be paying a crazy amount for it, but you wont be denied.

As far as office visits, they can tell you to pay like $250 up front before they will even see you.

Good luck

Do you have insurance? No
Is it priced fair? N/A
Do you buy it on your own? Apparently I am considered uninsurable because I had surgery on my neck in 2006 and used to take antidepressants. 3 companies have refused me individual/family coverage.
Or from where you work? If I were employed by a company that offered a group health plan, I couldn't be refused coverage and I would buy it.
If you have none can you really get care? I have been to GP and eye doctor since not having insurance. In fact, both were kind enough to discount their services for me. My husband just had a minor inpatient surgery (23 hours in hospital) and the bills are at $7100 and still coming in. The surgeon discounted his service by 40%. We're still waiting for the anesthesiologist and ER docs to bill so we can negotiate.

Hello VA I always enjoy your posts--

Got a question--NC has a high risk pool that will cover both you ans husband I believe --did you know that?

DTB, thanks for the kind words! Yes, I did look into what I call the Assigned Risk for the Uninsurables Insurance when I became unemployed and lost my benefits. They quoted me something like $1,100/month just for coverage on me. Sadly, when you don't have income, you just can't afford it.

It's a vicious circle. If you're not working and have any medical history, you can't afford or can't obtain insurance. If you have had a decent income and become unemployed, you don't qualify for any assistance.

In the scenario with my husband above, the hospital is willing to discount the bill by 25% but is insisting that we pay them $150/month on the balance. This demand is based on income generated from 2009 of $40,000 between work and unemployment benefits and ignores the fact that there has been no income into the household for the last 4 months! We've basically decided that they'll take what we can afford, even if it's only $10-20/month and be happy with it or we'll just act like many of their patients and just say screw it altogether! I've had bad medical debt before and it never affected my ability to obtain credit.

I'm an honorable person and am willing to pay whatever is fair, however I am not going to sacrifice my basic needs to satisfy some payment formula based on stale data! It's disgusting to see what doctors and hospitals will accept for "adjusted charges" from insurance companies as payment in full, then to have them act as if they are doing me a favor by discounting the bill by 25%!

Sorry for ranting but this is a really sore subject with me and explains why, even as a healthcare provider, I support the President and have hope that there can be a resolution to this problem. A year ago, I didn't see myself in this situation and I'm sure there are thousands more in the same situation. Something has to be done!

Have it through the school system and pay $230 a month(county picks up the rest) for a family of 4. I am sure I could find problems with it but overall I cant complain. The one thing I agree with that someone listed above was discounted coverage for those that "never" go to the doctor.

Pay $880 a month under COBRA but when that is over in July my wife and I have to get it on our own. At that time it will cost us over $1400 dollars a month for a crappy plan (58 and 53 years old). With all of the cost of co-pays and other expenses we will be paying over 25% of our income for health care and still just a major illness away from losing evereything. Just have to hope I have a quick death.

Do you have insurance? yes blue cross blue shield for me. My employer throws in vision, short term disability and long term disability. My wife works at children's hospital, and their plan is outstanding through Gilsbar.

Is it priced fair? don't know b/c I don't see my premium bill. I do pay $6 monthly for dental. My wife's plan covers her and kids. Great plan that entitles them to $2 copay on all drugs, no copay on sick doctor visits, and no copay for 5 well visits per year. $20 copay after that on well visits, but how many well visits do you take after your first 2 years of life???

Do you buy it on your own? not me, but wife pays $125 monthly for her and kids

Or from where you work?work

If you have none can you really get care? I dunno, but my nanny has no insurance and she gets outstanding care (including recent female surgery) at various local facilities and a large regional hospital in Houma (roughly 1 hour outside of NOLA)

I feel your pain Va

this is where DTB comes back and says anyone can get insurance in the US. And if you cant you can always go on welfare and become one of the handabouts that he rants on so much. and that coming from someone that pays 60 bucks a mth for insurance.

I watched a show with Dr Gupta the other day on CNN about rising costs.

He walked into a operating room and began pricing things. The operating room was 3,000 a hour. He picked up surgical instruments 750
, 700, 1200, 1400,

instruments that have use in operating room. They have patents, and we are paying for the technology 10 years later.

It was sickening.

we need tort reform, not government takeover:shrug:

let insurance companies compete across state lines, would be a good start. the people in Washington have their own Cadillac insurance plans and dont give a shit about average Joe, like you and me. I am guessing insurance companies are making as much money as possible before the day comes when we are stuck with socialized medicine:shrug:

I do agree something has to be done.

For once he didn't say anything that would warrant this attack. Good grief, man, quit being such an asshole.....

I'm single and work for the postal service and have the union health plan w/ no co-pay. It's only $7.77every 2 weeks for the consumer driven option, which works out great for me (health is great, knock on wood).
..............................................................

who foots the bill for the insurance of every postal worker in America that is paying this kind of cheap coverage ?

uhhhh duhhh

taxpayers.

and the Postal Service lost 600 billion last year

again

although at this time i have no opinion on tort reform, i do believe in the free market system & like the idea of insurance companies being able to sell across state lines. i believe competition will help lower the costs.

i also want the gov't to stay as far away from controlling our health care system as possible & think if they do take it over with what obama is proposing our country will become bankrupt & make us weak around the world.

where i do think our gov't should get involved in is helping the uninsurable & think an assigned risk pool should be set up that is similiar to what we have with uninsurable drivers....the assigned risk pools are monitored by each state & imo that is what should be done in the health field.....
