Poor officiating tends to work me up only because I know how hard the kids work and I just wonder what the hell a referee sees to make such horrible calls. I get it, they aren't going to get every call, but they aren't volunteers either so they should know the rules at the very least.

Exactly, nothing worse than a poorly officiated 8th grade girls basketball game......:0003

Sarcasm noted, but you are wrong. These kids practice everyday, join travel teams in the offseason, practice on their own and genuinely put a lot into their chosen sport. Parents sink a lot of money into these ventures and it's not like I'm asking an 8th grade volunteer ref to get it perfect on his night off. I'm asking for a varsity ref, who gets paid to officiate the games, to not express his bias towards the kids family who gave him a ride to the game.

In Western PA we take high sports probably a little too seriously, but it's something we love and we love our kids who play them, asking for a fairly officiated game should not be out of the question.

I coach Middle School Hoops as well as AAU Ball, parents suck period.....Kids want to play, have fun and get better, parents just want the W's and bitch......Let the coaches, coach and the officials, officiate.....If a parent can do a better job, by all means grab a clip board or a whistle......:0008

If coaches could coach and officials could officiate then parents would likely bitch less, at least that's what I see.

As far as the all too common "grab a clipboard or a whistle" comment, you realize these are paid positions here? It isn't as easy as saying you want to coach and they hand you the clipboard or saying you could officiate better and they give you the zebra shirt. You get what you get when you are a high school athlete or the parent of one. When the integrity of the game or safety of the kids is called into question my only option is to bitch, as much as you prefer I remain quiet and accept your superiority.

I agree 100% that there are calls missed/ignored in any given game, especially in Tourney/Travel Games. Our Refs are paid, as well as most coaches (including myself) PA hasn't cornered the market in that area.....If your kids coach isn't working the ref and play has become a safety concern you've picked the wrong coach to spend your money with.

We (coaches/refs) also understand that there are many games to fit into each day of play, it's not a perfect system but it is what it is and dictated by the person organizing the event which is also the person instructing the officials to speed up the games......That is the person you need to bitch at in person if you're not happy with the days events not yelling from the stands, not that you'll listen......The organizers are making a lot of money sitting back after the games start.......:0008

Soccer is played with a running clock so regardless of how good/poor the game is called they will end at the same time so this point really isn't valid.

In any event, my point was I don't go to the games to be "that" guy, I really don't want to be "that" guy, it's just that it is more of a reaction than a planned behavior.

I'm not looking to get into a bitching match, the majority of parents I deal with in basketball will complain nonstop.....They have no clue about rules whether sport or tourney play.....If you have a serious concern over safety/play, the events organizer is your best place to vent your frustrations not from the sidelines or stands......

Believe it or not players see, hear and get embarrassed when their parent is making a scene at a game, it really does affect how they feel and play.......:0008

I never got into an argument, but I have told other adults to not swear and to not yell at the kids. Wasn't an argument; more like I was the dad reprimanding bad behavior.

Not sure if all areas are the same, but around here in an economically depressed area, umpires and referees on the high school and lower levels are scarce. I have many friend who still do it and are over 60. Younger people see the abuse parents and coaches give officials and feel it's not worth it Some olders guys just keep doing it because there is a shortage........... I still do adult softball leagues and when I hear people mention all the money I make doing it, I always answer. "IF NO ONE IS WAITING IN LINE FOR YOUR JOB, YOU'RE NOT OVERPAID."

Friend of mine calls high school basketball and baseball. Easily the hardest games he has is when they ask him to go down and call Junior high because of the parents. Little Johnny or Little Susies mom and dad still think they have a shot at that pro contract, because they have went outside and shot for 20 minutes once a week and they are the tallest kid in their class. And oh yeah, we are paying coach Joe and he says they have a legitimate shot to go Division 1 because they are getting PAID to say that about your kid:0003,,CMON MAN,,,,,,,,

People are getting paid these days to coach a little league or middle school team outside of school? By the parents? There is your problem with parents, you take their money as a coach they feel they have a say. Crazy.

This is the problem I have with guys like Sports that take money from parents to coach their kids. Parent who gives most money gets son to play shortstop and bat cleanup? Wrong on so many levels in that age group, travel or no travel.

Interesting how you can have a problem with me taking money for my time, knowledge, organizing events, practices, skills & drill & scrimmages. I've never coerced a parent for their child to play basketball, they approach me to see if their middle school player fits what we are offering. There is a market and we provide a safe environment in our area , simple as that....If you want to be a part of it, great, if you can do all of the above and want to do it for "free" by all means have at it!!!

For some parents it's all about the game and their child getting better to prepare for the next level, for others it's having their child to step outside of their comfort zone and grow as a person. Either way we provide a service and a venue for each type of player to grow.
