Is a suit overkill for a $7/hr WalMart Interview?

Try and get into a company like Trader Joes instead of Walmart. Atmosphere is much better and clerks top out at $15. I'm sure being a Trader Joes store manager pays quite well too. Asst. Managers at Longs Drugs make $40,000 I believe so maybe try a place like Savon/Longs instead. Good luck either way.

I like Target, Kohls and even Sears better. Walmart just seems like a junk store to me.

Here is the best advice you will get

RUN LIKE HELL

Nobody treats managers worse than Wal-Mart, and I speak from experience. You will work every and all shifts on a rediculous basis, never have a weekend off and forget about buying a house, you will rent for the rest of your life because they can and will transfer you on a moments notice without hesitation. Get ready to work 70 hours a week during holidays and inventory time and be certain you can kiss the butt of every asshole that wants something for nothing because you can't have a complaint filed against you. I quit Wal-Mart about 7 years ago and do not regret it one bit.

I repeat:
RUN LIKE HELL

Appears there are jobs available for those with a little ambition.

Chopsticks way past that point. Have 4 wonderful kids and 7 Grandchildren. Old Navy is where my wife got me to go. And all the kids love that stuff. I call alot of it junk to. But hey they like it By oldest Grandchild she is 11 really loves old navy. It's the hip place I guess. Prices seem to be the same.

Got a good buddy that was a walmart manager for a number of years, says the stress nearly killed him and his marriage, never saw his kids, said he enjoyed the meetings in Arkansas when Sam Walton was there, long story short, left walmart and opened up a couple of video stores and some dollar stores. I guess good money but at what cost.

Good Luck

I can understand where your friend where your friend is coming from. I work in the Semiconductor industry where consolidation has dropped our work force in half, yet demand has increased our workload three fold. The money is pretty decent, but I can sympathize with the whole "going postal" thing. Our group had dropped down from a strong 20+ to only 12, leaving each person to take on extra projects. Sometimes the stress is unbearable, but since the market is so saturated, there really isn't anywhere else to go...

One of best friends was a manager thare.

He was making 45 grand a year but for that Wal Mart will
drive you into the ground.

Weekends, split shifts, 65 hour weeks standard.

all holidays, call in to work when trucks come in, etc etc..

He finally got canned after six years, for having a employee come to his house for thanksgiving dinner. They have some strict and dumb employee rules also.

I wouldnt recomend that to anyone.

Thanks Scott forgot about that no fraternization rule, could not socialize with any "associates" way to weird. Any other companies have that, I've always worked in a small office and some radio stations where this was never an issue matter of fact, fellow employees and employers were and are my best friends.

Peace,
LL

Just had a new super wall open here. We call-em big boxes here in the upper midwest. Big Building huge parking lot always half emity. Waist of alot of good space, that parking lot. They hired about 280 folks. Except for about 10 lower manger postions and the top two mangers. They all started at $6.50. No matter what shift you work. They move the shifts around I was told to avoid paying a true 3rd shift premium of 25 more cents. Unreal tight SOB,s. Of course if they would pay just a touch more maybe Sams four offsprings would not be able to remain number 4,5,6,7 richest in the world. Were talking many billions each. And sure enough the add is back in the paper after 1 month. Over 90 have moved on. 90 out of around 280. Somethings wong when that happens that fast.

walmart has 70% turnover a year with there employees. Thats a nice high number concidering they have over a million employees in the us. 700,000 associates come and go each year. But a job is a job. Plenty of work inside of WM when they are not cutting hours or sending people home. Its funny that someone stated one guy was fired for inviting a associate over for thanksgiving dinner. I know and have heard of plenty of assistant to store managers that are caught banging other employees in the store and either are demoted or moved to another store. Some actually remain in the same store they are caught in. Sounds like somebody had it out for your friend

Thanks everyone for the input. Question though--

I went in last Monday, had a 20 min interview with the hiring mgr, everything went great, she then called an asst mgr in, he talked to me for another 20 mins, things went great, then the hiring mgr walked back over, all smiles, said here is your W2, please fill it out, and here are the directions to go take your pee test, and ill be calling you in a day or two to inform you of our next upcoming orientation training class which will more than likely be held on friday.

So i go take the pee test, pass it, and then thurs afternoon rolls around, and no phone call. I call the HR lady, she says there will be no orientation on friday, and that she will call me next week if they decide to schedule an orientation then. I thought this delay was kinda odd since the position i was applying for was needing to be filled since there was a vacancy. Anyway, its now Tuesday, and im getting a little worried. Should I call her today and just touch base with her? Or give her till Weds? I mean, I know im now second guessing myself, but I *thought* I was hired on the spot, but now am wondering since they are not telling me a definite start date. Am i just being paranoid, or should I be concerned since I havent received a call yet?

who told you that you passed the pee test ?
They tell everyone that so they won't be sued if you question it.

They may say that you passed but they definately wont tell you if you failed.

never know what it can show. You could have had codine or something that showed up. If they arent going to hire you, you get the cold shoulder. Thats pretty standard.

Just go look for something else. If they call they call.

c note - This employee had it in for him. He was a manager. He was married and she got too close to him. Then when he backed off she claimed discrimination and said he had fratanized her.

Hope it was worth it as he was fired. Wal mart is weird company to work for bottom line. He now says it was the best thing that ever happened to him.
