Game: Capitol One Bowl
Pick: Michigan +11

"2 UNIT" UPSET SHOCKER (Michigan +11 against Florida in the Capital One Bowl which kicks off at 1:00 eastern on ABC): This is officially Lloyd Carr's final game as head coach of Michigan. Even though he is the third-winningest coach in the history of Wolverines football, Carr's repeated failures in big situations such as this, forced him to resign. The bottom line is that in his long tenure at the home of the "big house", Carr has NEVER lost 3 games in a row straight up. The last time Michigan took the football field, they ended up losing for a fourth consecutive season to rival Ohio State. There is nothing Carr can do about that futility right now, but he can tackle one more gremlin before he steps away, as his Wolverines will attempt to snap a 4-game losing streak in postseason Bowl appearances. The reason why today's posted line is so excessively high is because of what Florida did in last year's BCS Championship game where they ended up destroying Ohio State, and they look to rough up another Big 10 opponent this afternoon. But consider that there is a reason why the mighty Gators and their outstanding coach Urban Meyer are NOT participating this go-round in a BCS sanctioned Bowl game. The main reason is because Florida is an extremely YOUNG football team that lost a ton of key personnel from last year's title squad. Of course the young Gators are still loaded with young talent, especially with quarterback Tim Tebow who walked away with the Heisman Trophy. It is interesting to note that Heisman winners tend to be a curse when it comes to Bowl games. One has to look no further than at this time one year ago when Ohio State's Heisman winning signal-caller Troy Smith laid a huge egg in the BCS Championship. I did some research in my database and found that Bowl teams with Heisman winners on the roaster, have gone a lousy 7-18 ATS dating all the way back to 1980. Getting back to the subject of Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr when off an outright loss, he is a stirling 6-1 SU/7-0 ATS when cast as an underdog versus an opponent who is coming off consecutive wins. It is interesting to note that three different SENIORS on Michigan's offense (QB Chad Henne, RB Mike Hart, OT Jake Long) all opted against leaving early for NFL riches, so make no mistake that today's game means the world to them. The extended break since the dissapointing loss to the Buckeyes has given them much needed time to heal from injuries as well. Not only is this game the swan song for Lloyd Carr, but also for his entire coaching staff. Newly appointed Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez has already told NINE different Wolverine assistant coaches that they will NOT be brought back in 2008. One may want to call this the "Carr-and-Company" Bowl intangible game of a lifetime. As for me, I will glady TAKE the generous points with a Big-10 team that needs to make a statement that they can indeed handle an SEC Conference opponent.

---The Killer Move is passing for Tuesday---

Here are Robert Ferringo's picks for Tuesday:

4-Unit Play. Take #505 Illinois State (-1.5) over Wichita State (8 p.m, Tuesday, Jan. 1)
Yes, the Redbirds could suffer a letdown after their huge win over Creighton. But they dominated that game and I'm less worried about their emotional state after such a controlled win. Also, according to The Wichita Eagle, the Shockers should be without two starters tonight, leading assist man and PG Matt Braeuer and leading rebounder and PF Ramon Clemente. Illinois State is, as I stated over the weekend, my sleeper team in the MVC this year. They are No. 42 in the country in FG defense and facing a team that is 286th in offense. I think they lock down on an undermanned WSU team and keep their strong momentum going with a win over a weak team. ISU is 8-1 ATS on the road and 6-1 ATS in MVC play. WSU is 1-5 ATS in Valley play and 6-14 ATS against teams with a winning percentage over .600. Also, there is a system at play here that has hit nearly 60 percent over nearly 600 trials dating back over the past decade. Momentum, injuries, and systems are all in our favor in this one. That's a strong value situation.

2.5-Unit Play. Take #503 Clemson (-1.5) over Alabama (4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 1)
Clemson runs a trapping, pressing, pressure style of defense and that should exploit the big weakness that the Crimson Tide has - no guard play. That pressure should be enough to rattle the Tide and help Clemson control this one. The Tigers are 9-4 SU and 4-1 SU recently against the SEC, which is still one of the worst-performing Big Six conferences in the nation. Clemson is 10-1 ATS on the road after three straight home games, 5-2 ATS as a road favorite and 8-3-1 ATS on the road against a team with a winning home record. Basically, they travel very well. The ACC has had a lot of success against the SEC this season and I think this is a great matchup of a team with a significant weakness playing against one who's style of play should exploit that weakness.

Tonight's Game...

1. 300,000♦ Georgia

1. Georgia- You want to find out what happens when an overrated, weak-ass WAC team faces off with one of the best teams in the conference of conferences - the SEC? Tune into tonight's Sugar Bowl and watch, as the Bulldogs manhandle the Warriors on both sides of the ball, winning and covering with relative ease tonight in New Orleans.
Where does it all begin? In the trenches, as Georgia posseses the edge on both sides of the football. While Hawaii's offense is predicated on the short passing game, it'll be tough sledding for Colt Brennan, as he gets chased down by the likes of DT Atkins (6.5 sacks) and DE Howard (7.5 sacks). This Georgia defense routinely shut down opposing QBs... Just ask Tim Tebow (236 passing yards 1 TD) how tough this Bulldogs D is! Note that Georgia didn't allow a single BCS school over 268 yards passing this season.
On the other side of the ball, a mammoth Georgia O-line, which allowed only 15 sacks and rushed for 4.6 yards per carry will have little trouble with a smallish Hawaii defense. Make no mistake, the Warriors will get to know Georgia's O-line and their electric RB Moreno all to well tonight. What's the easiest way to limit Colt Brennan? Keep him off the field with punishing offensive drives led by the Bulldogs run game. Don't sleep on QB Matt Stafford either, as he's been great since getting the backfield help from Moreno, and has some solid WRs in Bailey and Massaquoi.
Finally, let's examine Warriors a little deeper. I've been asked time and time again: Are they for real? And the answer is no, plain and simple. When your opponents combined regular season record is a laughable 39-79, you know your not playing any real competition. Also, the fact the Warriors struggled at times away from the Island is nothing new - Louisiana Tech, San Jose State and Nevada all gave them trouble (0-3 ATS). In other words, Hawaii is a pretender, while Georgia is a contender.
Bottom line, the difference between these two teams will become obvious for everyone to see in tonight's Sugar Bowl. Hawaii gets undressed by a phsically superior Georgia team, that not only features the best defense Brennan has seen all season, but a balanced offense that can and will eventually wear the Warriors down. Georgia rolls!
Take Georgia comfortably over Hawaii as your top-rated play of the day.

Today's Game...

1. 100,000♦ Illinois

1. Illinois- Granted, the Trojans come into this game playing some of the best football in the country, but oddsmakers went a little to far with the number on this contest. Its not that I don't think USC is a good team, because they're excellent, but the fact of the matter is the Illini have seen top-tier defenses before and come out on top (see 28-21 win at Ohio State) thanks to dual threat QB Juice Williams.
Williams is in the same mold as as Oregon's Dennis Dixon, except not as accomplished a passer, and we saw what Dixon did to this Trojans defense. True, they were unable to grab the cash, but if Dixon ran for 76 yards and a touchdown, then Williams can wreak some havoc too. Before you go dismissing Williams, note that in his last 3 weeks he's tossed 7 TDs and just 2 picks, including his 4 TD performance against a vaunted Ohio State defense.
Herein lies the edge for the Illini, as they not only have Williams scrambling, but also stud RB Mendenhall, who rushed for 1312 yards and 17 combined TDs. The Illini run game averages a whopping 266 yards rushing per game, and despite the Trojans rock-solid run defense, stopping this Illini offense won't be as easy as everyone is making it out to be. If they can rush for 260 on 5.1 yards per carry against Ohio State, then they can make enough headway to cover the bloated number against Southern Cal.
Finally, try and remember guys this isn't the Leinart/Bush-led Trojans team of yesteryear. They still have a stable of talented running backs, but you've got John David Booty taking the snaps, throwing to some good, but not great wide receivers. The fact the Trojans are just 3-5 ATS when laying double-digits this season cannot be ignored, as they demonstrated in their win, but failure to cover against UCLA in the season finale. More of the same this afternoon, as the Trojans most likely win, but the Illini don't go down without a fight, grabbing the cash in the process.
Take Illinois plus the points over Southern California in today's Rose Bowl.
