3 days and 4 nights on the rail may be too much.....lol, where should we fly into ? We want to see the scenic views of the country side. That's why I started this thread, any advise is welcomed. Planning a 10 day trip :0008

Well I have lived in all those provinces on that train trip you are talking about. And don't get me wrong, the train ride would be fun, just warning you it is a long ride that's all.

Now if you are looking for "scenic views" then Alberta and BC will do ya just fine, guess it all depends on how much time you have. And since you titled the thread "Lake Louise" I am guessing you want to include that location on your trip.

If time is a factor maybe just focus on Alberta? Fly into Calgary or Edmonton and drive around the province (or take train)?

You could fly into Calgary and drive to Banff National Park and Kananaskis, that right there is a fun trip. And hey if you really wanted to go big you could drive into the BC interior from Calgary.

So many options.

Kananaskis

Note: My dad used to live right outside Kananaskis, I know the area well, some amazing views....like this.....

Highway 1 is filled with those views, if ya go, make sure you take lots of pictures. By the way just a heads up, lodging along Highway 1 (Trans-Canada Highway) ain't cheap.

Hey Betone,

I would recommend flying into Vancouver and spending two nights there. You will be travelling and will give you time to rest up for your drive thru the mountains. Vancouver is a great city and has many different hotels in different price ranges. Places I would hit there would be Stanley Park, rent bikes and drive around the park, its huge and is right on the ocean. Gastown is one of oldest spots in Vancouver and is worth the walk around. Granville Island has lots of pubs, restaurants and shops. It is surrounded by water and is a good people watching spot. The Capilino suspension Bridge is another attraction worth checking out.

I would rent a car instead of taking the train for your drive through the mountains. I would also pick up a cheap cooler for beer, pop, water, sandwiches and maybe some scotch. Plan on taking two days to get through the mountains to get to Lake Louise or Banff. The first night I would stop in Kelowna, great town right on the lake with lots going on. While you driving take your time and stop where you want to enjoy the spectacular scenery you will see. To me there is nothing better than stopping in a provincial park and sitting at picnic table eating a sandwich with a cold beer looking at the mountains. Lake Louise Farimont Chateau is beautiful hotel but I would stay at the Banff Springs in Banff. Most people stop at Lake Louise and walk around and get a picture in front of the lake. You can grab a cocktail in the hotel bar if you want. Much more to do in Banff plus the hotel has a great golf course to play. If you want to golf nine holes you can while the wife hits the spa. That way you only spend two hours on the course and don?t burn a whole day but get the experience. I would spend two nights in Banff it?s a great town with tons of stuff to do.

When you drive back hopefully you will have time to hit Vancouver Island. I lived in Campbell River BC, to me that is God?s country. if you have anymore questions or need help let me know.

1) The dude that played Boner in "Growning Pains" hung himself in Stanley Park.....

2) If you do stay overnight in Kelowna, one of my exes lives there, not sure if that info does you any good but thought I'd throw that out there.:142smilie

By the way, if you drove from the Vancouver airport to Lake Louise, Alberta it would take you a while, that trip is about 800km (497 miles). But as jigs says it is a nice drive.

I live in Alberta and lived/ worked in Banff for 8 years, which is 45 minutes from Lake Louise. I agree with Kick and fly into Calgary, rent a car and drive to Kananaskis for the night (Nokoda casino is on the TransCanada highway 1 turn off to Kananaksis). Then the next day head to Banff and stay at the Fairmont Banff Springs. Lots to do and see in Banff, just check out tripadvisor. The sister company that I work for is just finishing the redevelopment project to the upper terminal on the Sulphur Mountain gondola. It opens in August and is pretty cool and as spectacular views. After that head to Lake Louise for a night at the Chateau. Then the next day check out the Columbia Icefields.
Not a ton to do in September as it is off-season kind of except golf, fish, sight see, eat and shop. Winter time it is busy for skiing. Hotels will be a bit cheaper in September as it is off season, in summer they really jack the rates up.
