"the bunker"
ufc= quantity

strikeforce=more interesting(imo)....

you can`t compare the size and scope of the orgs....that`s ridiculous...

but i was looking forward to the fedor/card as much as any ufc card in recent memory...

we`re all addicted to mma, but, truth be told, some ufc cards are pretty bland...

i think we all better hope that strikeforce has some success...cause if someone like white ever totally corners the market,it will be bad for the fans...his "f-ck you" attitude wears pretty thin after awhile...

he`s a little tyrant...and that`s a bad thing,imo...

btw...i`m o.k. with toney doing his thing..just like kimbo......if he`s a joke he`ll be exposed...

it`s mma,not shakespeare...

We all know Strikeforce doesn't have the barn that UFC has on fighters, but lets face it more MMA is always a good thing and here is a fact:
The last 3 Strikeforce cards(Nov., Dec., Jan. cards) have all been solid lineups and EXCITING fights.
I am looking forward to UFC 111 although I can honestly say that if I didn't have the chance to watch it for free then I would not have bothered watching 107,108,109, and 110 live. I would have just downloaded them the next day.
Those cards didn't thrill me and they all were somewhat lackluster when stacked up to the 3 Strikeforce cards.

That is just a fact. Like GW said, UFC=quanity which doesn't always add up to quality which is fine.
Strikeforce is quality with less cards.

Dana has put in everyones head that quanity is better than quality these days. 2 PPV's a month these days=Greed out of UFC. How about using Spike more for some of these crap fighters. I mean Baroni on a PPV, REALLY?

i don`t remember that many ufc fights that had me yelling at the t.v(scott smith/sell).....that`s probably because there`s so many...

i do remember(off the top of my head)fedor vs the blck dude,melendez/thomson 2, scott smith vs radach and lawler vs manhoef.....

i`m sure i could remember more ufc fights if i took the time...just seems like there`s consistent drama in strikeforce...

that said,i would be crushed if ufc cut back on the number of cards they provide....

not complaining about the ufc...i`m spoiled...

Here's what I've thought the UFC should do for a while now. Cut back on the PPVs to every other month and give us more big fights on those. Cut a tv deal with ABC(mainly so ESPN will pimp you all the time) and have what would have been your normal PPV card on primetime Sat night. I don't think the money would be much different if the deal with ABC(NBC or FOX) was good enough and the really BIG part of it would be giving the sport a chance to grow with the mainstream. It will be hard to get it to grow past a certain point because someone who is just half way interested isn't going to pay the money for a PPV but they would be willing watch it for free. Once they're hooked on the free Sat night fights then they would be more likely to buy the PPV cards.

I know we're getting the free Spike night fights but that's totally different. Once a month, every other month if you had a fairly big card for free there's no telling what the numbers would look like. I think it would also bump the numbers of the PPV up not just because of new fans but because of the quality.

Dana White has been really quiet about talking about the James Toney signing which tells me one of two things:
1. Either he was not for it which is probably the case.
Or 2. It is hard to run your mouth about signing a guy that could indeed be a sideshow like he has always blasted.

I thought Roy Jones would have a better chance in MMA than Toney. Jones is way more athletic and quick and could be taught the ground game quicker, but Jones has shown he has ZERO left in boxing which would not translate well in MMA.
Like everyone said, Toney is gonna KO anyone in the HW division who wants to stand.

Dana has to respect what Walker did. Even though Walker fought a bum, he showed excellent skills for little training.
Lets see what Toney shows.

Well it seems like any fighter who has lost two in a row is fighting for a contract in his next fight with the UFC.
They do have too many fighters when you are cutting guys after PPV losses on just about every card.

shocked that they let hendo go.....i don`t see how shields gets by henderson....usually,everybody has a "hands" advantage over shields, but, henderson`s stand-up advantage with shields is ridiculous....

shields` wrestling is so good he can dominate most everybody on the ground...

but it`s gonna be tough to do vs what looks like a bigger guy who can hang with shields on the mat......might even be the better ground guy...

shields needs to take it down and hope for a submission...

Promotional battle heats up outside cage

meltzer.png
By Dave Meltzer

A behind-the-scenes chess match has resulted in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and its top rival, Strikeforce, running head-to-head television specials on April 17.
Strikeforce earlier in the week made the official announcement of an event on CBS, from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, featuring three championship matches: Jake Shields vs. Dan Henderson for the company?s middleweight title, Gegard Mousasi vs. King Mo for the light heavyweight title and Gilbert Melendez vs. Shinya Aoki for the lightweight title.
On Thursday, UFC president Dana White confirmed a live show on the same date, ?Ultimate Fight Night 22,? on Spike TV. While UFC countered an Affliction pay-per-view show in 2008 with a live event featuring Anderson Silva, if things don?t change this time, it will be the first time the two top promotions run major nationally televised events simultaneously.

No matches are confirmed for the UFC show, however. Thursday, White attempted to make Matt Serra vs. Mike Swick, but that will be impossible since Swick just suffered an arm injury and will likely need surgery. UFC sources indicated Kimbo Slice vs. James Toney was under consideration, but the talks hit snags.
No site has been confirmed for the UFC show, although it is known at least two locations are under consideration in the state of Tennessee, including Nashville?s Vanderbilt University.
The UFC?s announcement, though, may be just the first in a chain reaction. According to Strikeforce president Scott Coker, he and business partners at CBS and Showtime will be discussing the potential of moving their show back a week, ? to April 24 ? putting it head-to-head with Zuffa?s first-ever World Extreme Cagefighting pay-per-view show.
?Moving to April 24th will be discussed,? said Coker. ?That was the first date CBS wanted the show. [CBS vice president] Kelly Kahl wanted to take the high road and avoid going against their pay-per-view.?
A potential issue in moving the broadcast is that Showtime has a boxing special on April 24 as part of its ?Super Six? super middleweight boxing tournament.
Coker said Showtime?s research has shown that even though boxing and MMA are cross-promoted, they draw different fan bases. It?s an issue in running MMA on CBS on the same night as Showtime boxing, but it?s not a hurdle that can?t be overcome.
The Strikeforce promoter expects that the head-to-head maneuvering is not going to be a one-time deal, because both companies are running more dates and there are only so many Saturday nights available, so it?s inevitable that there will be conflicts.
?There will come a day when there will be a free show, with Fedor Emelianenko and/or Dan Henderson, going against one of their pay-per-views,? he said. ?That is going to be interesting.?
Unless UFC has a major television fight lined up for April 17, a special on CBS will draw more viewers simply because of the numbers advantage CBS has over Spike. But the equation would change if a major UFC star headlines the show. If Slice vs. Toney can be salvaged, that would change the dynamic because Slice is a proven ratings draw. The match, while not being the slightest bit relevant when it comes to the upper echelon of MMA fighters, could garner significant public curiosity.
MMA is at best marginal programming on CBS. The last Strikeforce show drew 39 percent lower ratings than CBS usually does in the same time slot, but it still has value to the network because it skews far younger and more male-oriented than usual Saturday night fare. It gives the network an outlet to attract sponsors who aim at the hard-to-reach male 18-34 demographic.
The April 17 show is a test, because if it does well without proven draws Emelianenko, Slice or Gina Carano, it?s a major feather in the cap of Strikeforce going forward on the network. That is probably why UFC is looking at countering.
A live UFC event on Spike is likely to do double, if not better, than Spike?s prime-time average. If a UFC show can whittle away a decent percentage of the audience that would have watched the Strikeforce show, the potential is there for Strikeforce to get a bad rating. Even if the counter-programming backfires and UFC doesn?t do well on that night, UFC is Spike?s highest priority programming and one bad night is not likely to do any long-term damage.
A Strikeforce move to the 24th would have its own significance.
Going against a WEC pay-per-view, even with the Jose Aldo Jr. vs. Urijah Faber featherweight title fight being the biggest match in WEC history, is not going to have a major impact on CBS? ratings. But the availability of a free show on CBS featuring an interesting lineup for hardcore fans, the main audience WEC also appeals to, has the chance to significantly affect the success of a WEC card billed at $44.95.
WEC is not established on pay-per-view, and if a free television show whittles away even a small percentage of viewers who decide to save money and watch the free show, that could be a devastating impact on the WEC brand as a PPV entity.
It should also be noted that UFC and Strikeforce do not draw from the same audiences. The Strikeforce events on CBS draw an older audience in general than the audience that watches UFC, which relates to CBS?s generally older demographics. The cities where Strikeforce does its best television numbers have little similarity with the markets where UFC does its best pay-per-view numbers.
But if Strikeforce moves its show, and at this point the company hasn?t, it is almost a sure thing that it will only inspire another counter from White.

Something must have happened to Tito during filming. UFC will keep that secret for obvious reasons.

Roger Huerta to join Bellator Fighting Championships?

Roger Huerta wants to try his hand in Bellator Fighting Championships' next lightweight tournament, according to MMAjunkie.com.
The signing of Huerta will be formally announced on Monday, MMAjunkie.com reports. Bellator recently told journalists that it has a news conference planned for Monday, although it did not provide a subject.
If Huerta (21-3-1, 1 no contest) has signed with Bellator, he would be the highest profile acquisition to date for the company's second season, which is scheduled to start in April 8.
At one time, Huerta was a rising star in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He used his brawling style to win his first six UFC fights, and in 2007 he became first mixed martial artist to have his face on the cover of Sports Illustrated. He appeared to nearing a championship bout before losing to Kenny Florian in August 2008 to end a 17-fight unbeaten streak.
Huerta has only fought once since then, losing to a decision to Gray Maynard in September. He has been talking to various promotions, including Strikeforce.
Bellator already has announced six participants for its second lightweight tournament, including returning fighter Toby Imada and up-and-coming Canadian fighter Mike Ricci.
Eddie Alvarez, currently the No. 4 fighter in the USA TODAY/SB Nation consensus rankings, won Bellator's inaugural 155-pound tournament last year to become the company's lightweight champion. Bellator plans to have its champions eventually face the winners of the second season's tournaments.
