New WEC champion Dominick Cruz expects Jorgensen or Page
World Extreme Cagefighting's latest bantamweight titleholder isn't keen on facing the last guy he beat before the title fight. Dominick Cruz recently told SiriusXM Fight Club:
"They might want to match me up with (Joseph) Benavidez again. I'd rather fight somebody else in the division just because I just fought him less than six months ago, and it was a great fight, but I just want to fight the best guys in the world, and my division is stacked. There's tons of guys that are at Benavidez's level, at my level, and they're all hungry, and I think they should get an opportunity too."
Benavidez tapped out former champion Miguel Torres with a guillotine choke last weekend, on the same night that Cruz defeated Bowles to seize the 135-pound championship. Although Benavidez is the highest-rated bantamweight in WEC who has yet to fight for a title ? he's No. 5 in the USA TODAY/SB Nation consensus rankings ? he already lost to Cruz in August.
Cruz expects to make his first title defense in August against Scott Jorgensen or Damacio Page.
Jorgensen (9-3) raised his WEC record to 5-2 when he caught Chad George with a guillotine choke and submitted him in 31 seconds on Saturday.
Page (15-4) is 3-1 in WEC, including a win over Jorgensen, and hasn't fought since beating Will Campuzano in October. The card for next month's WEC 48 pay-per-view includes a bout between Page and Antonio Banuelos.
