Obviously there aren't too many Notaries on this Board. However you might want to consider it since performing a Mortgage Closing takes approx. 1 hr and you generally get paid in the neighborhood of $150 to $200 per Closing. There were actually days when I had 5 Closing to do. You do the math ...

How do you become a Notary Public?

CM

You must call the Notary Commissioner or State Secretary of (Your State) to apply for a license.
In my state, they send you a booklet which you must study and take an open book test. The charge in my State is $60 which upon passing the test you are appointed as Notary Public that is generally good for 4 years until it is time to renew. It is extremely beneficial to become a Notary Public. At my job, I am Notarizing Documents for co-workers constantly, which I generally don't charge them for. However, you are capable of charging up to $5 per document that you witness & notarize. The real money is doing Mortgage Closings as I have mentioned.

Also I forgot to mention, your license is only good for the State that it was applied in.

Go to this Website. It should give you all the information your wife needs to get started.

NATIONAL NOTARY ASSOCIATION

Upon registering you will be placed on a list of available Notaries to perform Mortgage Closings in your State. When a Signing Agency or Title Company or Lender needs a Closing to be done, they will call your wife and ask if she wants the assignment. TELL HER TO SAY YES !!! I will tell you all that needs to know about doing the Closing from there. She only needs to do it one time to get a feel for it. When I started, I had noone to give me information and I made some mistakes until I got it down. I will make certain that your wife doesn't make those mistakes and of course you can go with her when she performs the Closing because she will need an additional Witness besides herself. Let me know after she registers.
One more thing, you might want to get her name on the AMERICAN SOCIETY OF NOTARIES list as well. I think there is a yearly fee. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $39 I think. But regardless of how much they charge to list her, do it because you will get this back two fold. And also I file my income tax under Schedule C which allows me to get compensated for all the Fax Machine Ink, Printer Ink, Printer Paper, Office Supplies, Gasoline, Office Space in my home and Travel Expenses.

Harley I would be interested, I am already a Notary, but just a question, don't most closing take place during the day? I have another job that I couldn't get away from during the week, so i don't know if that's a problem.

In today's market most docs are signed at the homes of the applicants in the evening. Traditionally, they work as well. However, bank lenders provide theirs, in house. Commercial and private lenders include like fees in their closing costs and work with people they have on call. It's not something a borrower has any say in. Very competitive.

Not at all ... I work for a national telecommunications corp. during the day. When I get an assignment for a CLosing. More than likely, the Borrower has a day job as well. I contact the Borrower and setup a time that I will go to their home. Usually, it's around 6pm or later if they want. The documents are generally emailed to me, known as E-DOCS or some companies fax the Documents. That is not usually the case but I have run into that occassionally. I print them down in duplicates and set them up nicey nice, along with my stamp and away I go. It's a nice little suppliment to my main income.

I'll tell you this .. it is not usual for other Notaries to give this information because as you may realize, you are in direct competition to other Notaries who would rather get the work than you. But to be quite honest, I really don't care about that and chances are, most of you are not in my State so you would not be in competiton to me at all.

Well you got me on that one ... I would have never guessed it with Threads like : Where are the free porn sites? And, "I have a problem with my window installer"? So I thought this was a 'Whatever You Want To Discuss' site.
