For starters, this will go down as an all time classic for me. The best CFB game I have ever attended and boy did I pick the right game to go to South Bend for the first time. Amazing!
Here are some random thoughts.
ND is back! Weis is the real deal! I saw it in Pete Carroll in year 1 and I am seeing it in Weis in year 1. ND will be have the similar instant success as USC! USC/ND rivalry (if both carroll and weis stay) will def. be the #1 rivalry in CFB (which I think it is already). ND will be contending for NC next season!
I think the biggest game changer was in the 1q where USC was up 7-0. ND had 4th and 1 own 29 and went for it. If ND punted or never got 1st down, USC would have won tonight by 15+pts. I think it would have turned into a blowout. HUGE call by ND and they ended up scoring 7 off it. The next big game changer was the punt return for ND.
USC hurt themselves. Before I give ND credit, USC played poorly. At least 5 dropped passes and most were at least 10-20+ yard gains. Can't do that against the #9 team in the country on the road. USC of course gave up punt return for ND TD to go down 21-14. Again, you can't do that $hit against the #9 team in the country on the road. Lastly, USC down 21-14, 1st and goal at the ND 10 yard line, throws an INT. Can't do that against the #9 team in the country.
Leinart I thought played well. Quinn was the better QB today (mainly because of his legs). Remember, Leinart suffered a minor concussion against ASU and today he got banged up in the head again with Lendale White. I think it hurt him in making reads. But the 2 main reasons for Leinart not looking "heisman" like was #1 dropped passes and #2 ND pressure. USC OL could not keep the pressure off Leinart. Great job by front 7 for ND!
I am SHOCKED :scared ND shut down Lendale White. AMAZING JOB! IMO Lendale White up until today was USC's best running back with the best production. He was SHUT DOWN! However, Reggie Bush took over White's spot as being the most productive and Bush flat out won the game for USC. What a special player and he is the best player in the country and he won the Heisman Trophy tonight! Unless Leinart starts recovering from his minor consussion but he might need few more weeks.
I thought the USC D played well especially against a ND offense that has had 2 weeks to prepare. At the end of the game the USC D was spent because they were on the field ALL game. USC did HORRIBLE job offensively managing the clock. Weis did a superb job! The young USC OC's still have a lot to learn!
ND was the 3rd ranked opponent USC had to face on the road. :scared USC took their opponents best shot and came out with the win once again. In this case, Weis has been preparing for this game since Feb. AND had 2 weeks. If USC wins the NC this year, they have done an amazing job. But USC still must beat Fresno St., UCLA and @CAL to make it to Rose Bowl! Not easy!
I think the better team won tonight but both teams deserved to win. I have not seen the game on TV so i cannot give an honest comment because my view was from the 15 yard line. I thought G-Man said it best. ND had their chances to beat USC offensively and defensively. They came up short and USC won the game. As for the refs. I am not sure they made a bad call. If someone wants to argue Bush pushing leinart, well that is stupid. That happens all the time in CFB and it is a rule that I have NEVER seen flagged. #2, Bush pushed Leinart but then moved away. Was not like he was standing behind him and went into the end zone with Leinart. Look at the pics of leinart crossing the goal line and Bush is nowhere to be seen.
As for ND fans and stadium. Class act and I enjoyed myself. I interacted with ND fans all around me (sat in ND section) and had a blast. I was decked out in USC gear with my USC Hockey shirt and USC hat. We were screaming and telling each other our opinions on both teams etc. all game. After the game we all shook hands with respect for one another. ND stadium is small but man o man was it loud. Never been to a game that loud. WOW! I also enjoyed the ND band (something I never seen because they do no travel to USC) The student section for ND is amazing. Love the tradition. Wish USC student section could be HALF as organized. I loved every minute of the game and I never enjoyed a CFB game more than I did tonight. Had such a great time!
To all the IRISH fans on this site. YOU GOT A GREAT TEAM AND A GREAT COACH! I am a big fan of ND and want them to win every game except against USC. You also have great classy fans! I had a blast in South Bend but I also have very little voice left and emotional drained! Reason I am back in my hotel at 2am! After that 4th and 9 completion, my voice cracked from screaming so loud and that is when I lost my voice for good!
Goodnight and can't wait to watch the game on TIVO Tues. night! USC has a heart of a champion. You don't see teams who have won 27 games in a row with 2 NC's play with this much heart. You would think USC is going for their 1st BCS NC in the last 15 years! USC has a lot to work on if they want to win the BCS NC this year but the good news is USC has a lot of room to grow and improve. Very very young team and they FINALLY get to go into a stretch of easier games instead of playing top 25 opponents on the road. Remember, Carroll teams ALWAY improve as season goes on and USC will be playing their best football at the end of the year.
