first two weeks of the season have been really lame for me. not used to this whole "losing in college football" thing. weird feeling. :)

revised and final list of plays for saturday:
(scratched western michigan and florida. lost on uconn friday)

bigger plays:
michigan and san diego state under 24
(halftime play above)
akron (+31) over virginia
arizona state (-2) over iowa
texas christian (+6) over texas tech
ohio state / nc state under 46
toledo (-8.5) over eastern michigan

normal plays:
central florida (+23.5) over penn state
colorado state moneyline (+150) over minnesota :scared :scared
miami,ohio (-19.5) over ohio university
miami,ohio 2nd half (-9) over ohio university

"re"-add :

florida (+3) over tennessee

when it came down to it, just couldnt pass on akron in this spot. virginia certainly outclasses the zips, but cavs are in somewhat of a new territory, where theyre expected to pound the shit out of teams and cover big numbers. akron having two pathetic efforts in the first two weeks takes this line from 27-28ish to 31. thats a significant climb. 4+ touchdowns is a lot of points to give a good offense, especially one with a quarterback as good as anyone out there...zips defense will get shredded, but i think this one ultimately ends up around 46-21 or something like that.... main part of the asu play is the revenge angle. sometimes, revenge is 'over-handicapped', but i think the angle is definitely applicable here. iowa beat the shit out of asu last year in a game that was expected to be close. devils really underachieved last season but i looks -- to this point -- like they finally might be playing to their potential. dont really understand the pick'em type line, since i figured asu would be laying 3.5 or 4 points, but not complaining...... playing tcu because i expect them to run the football right down tech's throat. obviously, raiders are going to move the ball with that wide open offense, but i think tcu's bowl game last year vs. boise proves that a solid rushing offense is the best defense against an explosive passing team. tech will get their share of points, and may very well be up 7-10 at halftime, but i think frogs rushing game will ultimately wear down tech and this one will be decided by a late FG. ..... looks like im on an island with colorado state. but ive got way too much respect for lubick and his ability to coach in big games to not give him a shot here. minnesota has the ability to score 30+ pts, but theyve always been a questionable road team under mason. and csu's first two games (colorado, southern cal) have done a lot more to prepare them for this one than have minnesota's (toledo, illinois state) ...... finally, betting on a miami team with high expectations to get this ship righted. cant say i have tons of fundamental reasoning behind this one. its a high chalk, but once this game dropped under 20 points, i had to grab it. ohio is trying to experiment with throwing the ball more, but that could be trouble here. if they give miami more possessions, its gonna mean more of a rout. from what ive read, hoeppner has done a good job of focusing his guys for this game and putting the two non-conference games behind them. dont see miami being tested at all... got the number i was looking for on central florida. i think the knights are going to keep this one under 20 pts. penn state is kind of in a sandwich spot here. its early, but this game is in the middle of a power conference sandwich -- psu back home after a road night game at boston college and then they go to wisconsin and minny in the next two weeks (two ranked opponents). i dont think the lions are good enough to lay a focused beating on ucf. and i think ucf's two tough games to open the season only help them here.

ohio state under 46....after looking over some old osu numbers, a few things jumped out at me:

1) ohio state has gone under the total in their first road game in every year tressel has been head coach. that gives me reason to believe defense is emphasized at practice when osu hits the road because thats the way to win games in hostile environments.

2) ohio state went under the total in 3 of their 4 road games last season (the 3 unders all had < 40 pts)

3) ohio state went under the total in ALL 4 of their road games during the 2002 season (43,33,16,39)

and with zwick showing a propensity for making mistakes, i think the osu game plan is going to be super vanilla and they (once again) are going to play field position football and win with their defense. one thing that is very apparent with tressel is that he has no problem with playing the field position game and putting the game on the shoulders of the defense.

also worth noting that last years 3OT game was not a wide open game by any means. the game was 17-7 after 3 quarters before nc state made their rally behind rivers and then both teams scored a few times in OT. but both defenses played pretty well in regulation.

also -- for you side players, ohio state hasnt lost very much under tressel, but they are 0-3 in their first game away from columbus in his 3 years as head coach. that being said, no way do i bet against him here. i will take the under though.

I played the first 4 games on your list & doubled up on Florida +3 +103 @ Pin just now.

I like Wmich alot in this spot especially if the starting QB for the Illini can't play this week.

I disagree on TCU though as that defense isn't as good as year's past & I don't think TT is as bad as they have shown so far. They kept shooting themselves in the foot last week as they IMO dominated the game.

A few questions for you..
Didnt Uconn struggle to get by Duke at Home??
Wasnt everyone and there mother on Penn st. and BC DECISIVELY win that game??

Akron stinks plain and simple.. UVA looking to lay more lickings on people for "cred" with the pollsters

Minni will whip Colorado st.
Its just not Rams year.. Minni will win easy and position itself for Big 10 run

Snow ball is a good term .. 63-0... I'd say ... but Illini arent much better IMO
I like that call

Also like FLA and ASU Itys time for Sun Devils to step up

Hope this helps..

hokie fan:

appreciate the feedback. always like it when guys can offer a cogent (even if opposing) opinion on some games.

my counterpost-

uconn....im not worried about one game. they struggled mightily. no denying that. but this program is on the rise. theyve played some mac schools recently, so ive seen this program get progressively better. i know its only week 3 of the season, but i think you can make an case for uconn looking ahead a little past duke and onto bc, given the rivalry/proximity/exposure this game offers.

akron...im stubborn on this one. i like the zips. spang is the only one that can talk me out of this one. frye is too good to not position this team for a respectable final score. i think akron scores 20-24 points. they have a solid offense (just no defense)

as for csu/minny....ive seen lubbick come up big in these spots too many times. im not going to lie, im betting more of a coach than a team here. minny is capable of scoring 40. but this is not an easy environment to play in whatsoever. some good teams have lost here.

western michigan just gave the ball away and let that game get ugly vs tech. they played pretty well for a quarter and a half. but you obviously cant make mistakes and turnovers on the road (especially at tech) and thats exactly what they did. 42-0 or 63-0 is an ass kicking all the same.

again, thanks for the reply. appreciate the feedback. please contribute to my theads in the coming weeks. i like going back and forth with guys who know what theyre talking about.

i like most your plays gman, but considering minnesota if i had to pick. they have a great team and everybody knows they play a soft schedule, but they are 2nd in the nation in running and CSU is allowing 225 ypg rushing. that could pose some problems.

Last week BC gave up 269 yards passing to Penn State, but PSU QB turned ball over 4x on int's.

Last week UConn amassed 290 yds passing and clearly was looking ahead to this game.

Uconn +pts is a very solid play and the ML should have a lot of value as well.

Gman - dont waiver on Akron - I think your analysis is right on - even if UVA hangs +50 on them, Akron can easily post 3 TDs plus a field goal or 2. Akron's Offense is beter than UNC's which put up 24 LW. Frye will not stop throwing the ball, regardless of the score or time remaining.

I know you're not much of a trend player but found these on the zips/cavs game.

Akron 10-2 after 2 or more ATS losses

Cavs 1-9 after N Carolina

Take care and GL

1st - I hope you break out of your "losing in college football thing" I know you will

2nd - It looks like we will be going head to head in a lot of games. Question for you.... I know Frye is a good QB but it is looking more and more like a let down season for Akron. The offense was good and the defense played well but turnovers once again spelled doom for Akron against MTSU. UVA has a lot of NFL talent on defense, especially at LB. This will be tough for Akron considering they really don't have a great running game and UVA can bring pressure with the front 4 and play back in pass with the LB's and secondary. Looking at offense UVA throws and runs the ball well and PSU ran and threw all over this team. MTSU has a young line and Akron couldn't really get to the QB allowing 400 yards passing.

My biggest concern for this play other than the chalk was a "look past" game for UVA. I have to think the Cavs open it up defensively on this team and the Cavs come out swinging. Also in goal line UVA runs a lot, something Akron couldn't stop vs. MTSU.

IMO 31 is a ton and I think BigSlick is right that Akron may put up, some puts but UVA's defense will be looking to get the shut out if Akron doesn't score early.

Just my thoughts, but good luck this weekend.

So Cal
UVA has superior talent all over the field. Great running game led by Lundy. awesome OL returning 5 st from ly and 3 entering 3rd starting yr. Possibly the best LB corp with Brooks ,Parham ,and Blackstock

31 is alotta points to lay but they'll be looking to impress the pollsters

frye may give Akron a chance but UVA could easily dominate this game

also Minny will run all over CSU !!

I'm not bashing your picks just giving my opinion

best of luck this week

tulah:

a dissenting opinion is not bashing, dont worry about it. as for uva having superior talent all over the field.....the line at 31 says as much.

one thing i will say is that im surprised at how many people think minnesota is just gonna roll over colorado state. gophers have never been a good road team, and have people forgotten how tough it is to play at csu? i gotta put sonny right up there with the best of them in terms of having his teams prepared and rarely if ever does this guy get outcoached.

Gman -- I agree with what you're saying about Sonny as a bigtime coach and CSU's homefield, but I also give a ton of the credit from the past few years to Van Pelt, who was as gritty as they come. CSU will never be able to resplace that kind of player, and are having trouble finding their niche without him. Hope I'm not overthinking this one.

Regardless best of luck this weekend and throughout the year.

Gman,
I have been at every single BC Uconn game that has been played, not that it is a storied rivalry, Uconn and BC are a mini rivalry. UCONN kills em in hoops but BC will never, yes never, lose to them in football,
they play close tight games and I love the points here but Uconn will not win..
Not at BC on a friday, expect a big drunken turn out, me also,..

But hey I have been wrong before..

Well, I'd never talk anybody out of a play but...

Well, I'd never talk anybody out of a play but...

Charlie has had trouble getting the ball down the field. Something that has not been alluded to is the fact that the Zips lost their top three receivers from last years team, and that they were three very talented receivers. Their best receiver so far appears to be Hixon who was forced to change sides of the ball from safety due to the huge void left by graduation. Frye has spread the ball around to a plethora of personnel pretty well underneath converge, and the results have been about ten yards per completion and only a couple of TDs. To Charlie's credit he is completing 75% of his throws and putting up Pennington like numbers.

As mentioned earlier Virginia has a very strong group of linebackers and this may take away from the Zips tendency to throw short, forcing them to try to beat the Cav's deep. I don't think that they can do it. Also not to be overlooked is the issue of poise. The Zips were very tight in front of a full house at Penn State and will be in the same situation vs. a much tougher opponent saturday.

To close , Al is thinking BCS and will take no prisoners. The Zips defense is still a train wreck and will need time to retool. All this said, 31 is a huge number. I liked Va. at around 28 or so but would not think of laying over 30. It's a pass for me but I will be rooting you and the Zips to make a respectable showing. :)
