The Redskins primary logo used today was first designed in 1971 in close consultation with Native American leaders. Among those who unanimously approved and voiced praise for the logo was Walter ?Blackie? Wetzel, a former President of the National Congress of American Indians and Chairman of the Blackfeet Nation. Years earlier, Mr. Wetzel had been deeply involved with U.S. President John F. Kennedy in the movement for civil liberties, civil rights, and economic freedom for all. In 2014, Mr. Wetzel?s son Don commented, ?It needs to be said that an Indian from the State of Montana created the Redskins logo, and did it the right way. It represents the Red Nation, and it?s something to be proud of.?
It should be added though that the same group who consulted on the logo has repeatedly said that they have never - and will never - endorse the use of the name "Redskins."
It's not the logo that was the problem - it's the name. But once you agree to change the name, you're gonna naturally change the logo to support the new name. I don't expect you'll see the Seminoles, Utes, or Blackhawks change theirs because in those cases both the name and logo were done either with consultation with those actual tribes (in the case of Seminoles and Utes), or are depictions of an actual person (military leader Black Hawk of the Sac and Fox Nation). Likewise I don't see names or logos changing for the Braves or Chiefs - those are basically the same as Vikings and Generals. But you'll continue to see changes around those - like the Illini no longer using Chief Illiniwek and the Blackhawks using a bird (a black hawk) instead of a Native American as their mascot. The Braves say they are keeping their name but likely will do away with The Chop. It's hard to imagine Florida St and the Chiefs continuing to do The Chop for that much longer either, though neither has commented on it recently that I'm aware of.
This shouldn't be an all-or-nothing issue. There are things which make sense to change to reflect the changing times and there are things that are overreach. Not everything is the "PC police going crazy" and not everything is a "grossly offensive stereotype."
