The Redskins primary logo used today was first designed in 1971 in close consultation with Native American leaders. Among those who unanimously approved and voiced praise for the logo was Walter ?Blackie? Wetzel, a former President of the National Congress of American Indians and Chairman of the Blackfeet Nation. Years earlier, Mr. Wetzel had been deeply involved with U.S. President John F. Kennedy in the movement for civil liberties, civil rights, and economic freedom for all. In 2014, Mr. Wetzel?s son Don commented, ?It needs to be said that an Indian from the State of Montana created the Redskins logo, and did it the right way. It represents the Red Nation, and it?s something to be proud of.?

It should be added though that the same group who consulted on the logo has repeatedly said that they have never - and will never - endorse the use of the name "Redskins."

It's not the logo that was the problem - it's the name. But once you agree to change the name, you're gonna naturally change the logo to support the new name. I don't expect you'll see the Seminoles, Utes, or Blackhawks change theirs because in those cases both the name and logo were done either with consultation with those actual tribes (in the case of Seminoles and Utes), or are depictions of an actual person (military leader Black Hawk of the Sac and Fox Nation). Likewise I don't see names or logos changing for the Braves or Chiefs - those are basically the same as Vikings and Generals. But you'll continue to see changes around those - like the Illini no longer using Chief Illiniwek and the Blackhawks using a bird (a black hawk) instead of a Native American as their mascot. The Braves say they are keeping their name but likely will do away with The Chop. It's hard to imagine Florida St and the Chiefs continuing to do The Chop for that much longer either, though neither has commented on it recently that I'm aware of.

This shouldn't be an all-or-nothing issue. There are things which make sense to change to reflect the changing times and there are things that are overreach. Not everything is the "PC police going crazy" and not everything is a "grossly offensive stereotype."

Yep, you are bang on.

The name Redskin is clearly racist and the team name should have been changed decades ago.

And for the record that name was adopted by the Washington franchise back in 1933 by a bunch of white men. And I am guessing not too many Native Americans were asked for their input on the name back then.

As johnnyonthespot said above, there isn't a Native American on the planet that would endorse that name.

I have spent some time on Native Reserves and I have never heard any Native American say they have a problem with the logo. The logo for the Washington NFL team and the Chicago Blackhawks is a logo that brings pride to some, it is a representation of a warrior. There are various different meanings to the logos (Chicago/Washington), but none of them are negative. I have been on Reserves where teenagers have played hockey wearing Chicago Blackhawk jerseys, the logo is just fine.

People bringing up money.........well speaking of money.....Washington (and NFL) going to make plenty of cash off of the merchandise and such.

Lots of the "old stuff" will be bought up, and then the "new name stuff" will be selling like crazy.

Plenty of money to be made.:0071

Name change helps so many people. It will solve a lot of our problems as well. I will not rest until we change ALL Nicknames that offend a few people. However, this gesture by the NFL Franchise in Washington, D.C. warms my heart so much that I'm fighting back the tears MadJackers. :jerkit:

1. The Redskin name isn't a nickname, it is a racial slur.

2. There are over 300 million Native Americans worldwide so it is a tad more then a few people.

I'd explain the difference between the word Chief and the word Redskin, but we all know explaining things to you is something that can't be done.

But no worries Hedgehog, it is all a hoax just like Covid-19, so no worries.

And why do you care? You said you would never watch an NFL game again, so this issue means nothing to you. Guess you'll just have to watch movies now for entertainment. Just make sure you don't watch any in a movie theatre, Obama likes to shoot people in movie theatres like that one time he went on a spree in Colorado. So make sure you arm yourself so you can get him next time he unloads on a movie going audience.
