Realistically, what do you think you could shoot at Augusta?

I'm a pretty solid 15 and think there's no way I'd break 100. i think that most of us would 3 putt the vast majority of the greens.

My buddy who is about the same as me (around a 10) played their prety recently and shot 83. Of course the tees werent all the way back and I imagine the greens and pin placements were easier.

I used to play professionally..... mostly the Asian tour, Canadian tour and a little in the States. Augusta is the one course I would love to play that I haven't had the opportunity. Just like everyone else, I've watched the Masters for years and feel like I know what to do on each hole. The difference between knowing what to do and doing it is immense. I break it down like this (with some thoughs included).

#1-3. I'd like to get off to a good start, but being a little jettery, I'd probably bogey #1.
#4. toughest par 3 on the course....another bogey
#5-7 all pars (starting to get the feel of the greens)
#8 BIRDIE (I'm glad the pin was in the middle of the green)
#9 Par Scary 2-putt from the back of the green
#10. long hole...barely got my 2nd shot to the front of the green....3-putted another bogey
#11 Christ this course is long....played my 2nd well to the right to avoid the pond. chipped on and 2 putted....another bogey.
#12 Par (played 8 iron to the middle of the green)
#13 Drive didn't hook...left myself over 250 to the green...decided to layup short of the creek. Wedge to green...2 putt par (damn, I know I should have birdied this hole)
#14 Crushed my drive (mad because I didn't birdie #13) still had 8 iron left. Pin was on the right and I played too "safe" to the middle. Rolled a very fast putt 4 feet by...missed the comebacker..another 3 putt...bogey.
#15 Crushed another tee shot and have just over 220 to the green. Hit a rescue club over the creek and on in 2. Miss my eagle, but tap in for birdie (yea!)
#16 Play away from the water to the middle. 2-putt for par.
#17 Tee shot to right side of fairway (ugh). Pin is right over the bunker on the right, and I have to play safe to the left. Hit a good shot, but I'm 50 feet away. another 3 putt
#18 3 wood short of the bunkers, but in the fairway (didn't fade it as much as I wanted). 5 iron to the middle of the green....2 putt for par.

There it is. Shot 76 and played really well. Only missed a couple of fairways, but the greens are treacherous and I was on the wrong side a couple of times, resulting in 3 putts. I'm usually a good putter, but these greens are slick and very undulating. If the pins are tucked, add another 2-3 strokes to the total.

sun tzu brought up the key:

Am I playing Augusta with The Masters setup or am I playing Augusta with the Members setup?

The Masters setup, I would say my average score may be around 115-125.

Using the normal setup and playing the Members normal tees, I would probably cruise in around 95-105.

I would say that the tourney setup could add up to 30 strokes to a given score with ease.

Screaming -- when were you on the Canadian Tour? My buddy, Jace Bugg, palyed on there for a while before going to the Nationwide after winning the Arkansas Open. Unfortunately he passed away a few years ago, but you may have run into him up there.

I've broken 80 a couple times and can shoot low 80's pretty regular on a 7000 yard track.

Masters set up I think low 100's to around one hundred.

Member set up has to be good for 5 to 8 stokes better

I recoginze the the name Jace Bugg, Dawgball. I played in the early 70's and he was way past my time. Lots of good memeories from those days and some good stories too. The guys I played with are either on the Champions Tour now or rocking back-n-forth on the porch.... :mj07:

The pin placement would make all the difference in the world as far as scoring. Those greens are ridiculous.

I remember last year looking at the tee boxes and fairways and thinking, "I could shoot a decent score out here."

Then I watched Jim Furyk drop 3 balls in the same exact spot on one green, and all 3 ended up about 30 feet apart on the fringe, and I thought, "I would be lucky to shoot 110." (14 handicap)

having played torrey pines the day after the buick i can attest to the fact that course are MUCH tougher for the pga tourney than they are the rest of the year........that said, most of the problems lie in the rough (which agusta has little of), the pin placements (amazing how close to the edge of greens/slopes they are located for pros) and the speed of greens.

My guess is that Agusta wouldn't be too much of a problem for me in terms of the length or the fairways but the greens would kill me......i shoot in the 80's fairly consistantly but think agusta would add 8-10 shots just because of the speed of the greens.

i'm gonna guess the worse golfer you are (and the shorter you are) the more strokes that course is gonna add in tourney conditions......7400 yards for the masters is a major difference than the 6700 or 6800 for members.

The length not a problem? The length is eliminating 80% of the PGA Tour field pal I think it would be a problem. Have you ever played a 7400 yard course? Didnt think so. And if you havent been there you could not imagine the elevation changes on this place. Kinda like you dont understand the banking of a race track until you go there. If you tripped and fell walking off the 10th tee you would roll for 350 yards before you could stop. #18 is STRAIGHT uphill to the point where a lot of spectators (smokers mostly) have to stop halfway up to rest. Im talking a 2 or 3 club difference. I could break par there but its doubtful anyone else on this board could break 90. I will post up and bet 10,000 that I can break 72 if anyone can get us on there. :SIB
