Report: Cincy's Kelly to be next coach at Notre Dame

ND must be thrilled. He's probably the most wanted coach other than maybe Urban Meyer.

IMO, Kelly could be the best coach in college football. I am glad Meyer is staying at FLA, because I didn't want Kelly to go there:scared
He has won everywhere he has been much like Meyer did, but I think Kelly did it under tougher circumstances. He was my #1 choice for the UT job last year and most around here laughed. Now everyone around here is talking about him and I am laughing now.
Bottom line, he will win no matter where he is - and as you have seen, he will do it quickly. If ND doesn't hire him, they are FOOLS, period:box2:

We still have plenty of time to screw this up. Until I see him with an ND hat at the podium, I'm not going to get excited.
I told Rolltide in another thread that since I was 100% on board with Willingham and Weis, it doesn't really matter what my choices are. I just want a offensive minded coach that runs a clean program, but that's what we've had. It makes absolutely no sense to me that the defense struggled as much as they did with 2 coordinators as strong as Tenuta and Brown, so I expect that who the new S&C coordinator is makes as much of a difference as the new head guy is. First choice was Gruden, then Kelly, then Peterson and then after that, it's not too exciting. . . .
You know a name that is not talked about often, probably because he and his teams are not flashy? Edsell at UConn has done more with less than many other teams in the country. His problem is that he is not that well known - and his name alone will not sell too many tickets. Patterson at TCU is another, but I don't think that he would be a good fit at ND.
Not so fast ND says they really like UCONN. Coach E, and think they have the same thoughts on how to get ND back to where the school thinks it should be. meeting will be set up very soon source says.
Kelly is a pure off. minded coach in his thinking, never was a major guy with a deff. type team, Well the Domers just had a off. minded coach in the fat man, don't think they are 100% sold on Kelly, I mean look at the points his teams have given up on the D side of the ball.
If they bring him in and score 31 a game but give up 35 ND will be looking at another good size wasted money buy-out IMO, So think they will look into Randy very hard.

Kelly needs to find a coordinator who knows a little defense.
IMO, he's a good offensive mind, but that doesn't get you very far. Calling him the best coach in football right now is nuts. He doesn't even crack the top 10 before even THINKING about who's after the top 10.

Eric - do you think Edsell is better than Kelly? I like them both, but my sell on Kelly is that he has won championships, both conference and national (at DII) and while Edsell always has competitive teams, I just don't know why ND would hire him over Kelly.
Skipper they are 2 different type of coaches, Edsell fits in the ND mode better, also lot harder to recruit at Uconn then Cinci. Both are very good but different coaches IMO, I think randy is just a better fit at ND and he is a winner, he built the program, that is damn hard to do.
I would not knock Kelly for his defense. It is amazing they ran the table considering Cincinnati only had 1 returning starter on defense and both corners from last year are in the NFL. They had a better than average defense last year when they had the players.
