WINNING POINTS

***BEST BET
Fresno State* over Louisiana Tech by 28
Steve Cleveland has been weathering his own issues at Fresno State this season, so he
can rent the s and hire an orchestra to play behind Tech?s bench, in sympathy for
a nine-man, inexperienced team?s plight of having played in Hawaii on Saturday
evening, then making the long flight West to East for a hangover-addled attempt here.
If they were more experienced, could make baskets and were playing for something,
maybe we give the roadies a shot. But it?s no, no, no in all three categories, so no way.
FRESNO STATE, 85-57

GAME: Toronto Raptors @ Miami Heat Feb 4, 2008 7:30PM
SPORT: National Basketball Assoc.
PICK: over
Offered at: 191.5 WSEX
REASON FOR PICK: This matchup sets up well for an 'over' to occur. The Raptors are averaging 109.4 points during their past five games. Chris Bosh is playing at a high offensive level, averaging 29 points during the past 10 games. Andrea Bargnani is showing signs his game is coming around scoring 28 points in Toronto's last game.

The Heat are giving up an average of 106 points during their past three games. They now have the worst record in the NBA. Their pride and morale are gone and when those two areas are lost so is the commitment to play good defense, Miami also is missing its two best rebounders, Shaquille O'Neal and Udonis Haslem.

The Heat, though, should get their share of points. They've been off since Friday. That's great news for Dwayne Wade, who has been battling the flu and needed the rest. He's averaged 34.8 points and shot better than 58 percent from the floor in his past four games versus Toronto.

The Heat probably are going to be very active before the Feb. 21 trade deadline. Ricky Davis is one player rumored to be leaving Miami. He's an outstanding scoring talent, but hasn't been a good clubhouse fit. The Heat may extend Davis' minutes in an effort to showcase him, which also helps the 'over.'

This is a two-unit play for me.

NBA

Game: Philadelphia at Atlanta (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Philadelphia +5.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

The Hawks had the look of a team that could challenge for a playoff spot when they got past Christmas at 15-12. Reality has set in with this team and they have regressed. Since Christmas the have gone just 5-12. They took down Philadelphia on the road back when they were playing well, so Philly may have a bit of juice to bring tonight. The Sixers certainly have not proven to be a challenge to the good teams, but they have proven to be the best of the sub-.500 teams when they take to the highway against another sub-.500 club. The Sixers have been money on the road in this spot as they are 7-2 SU and a money-making 8-1 ATS! Gotta? like their chances here tonight to get the win, but at least get the cover.

Game: Houston at Minnesota (8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Game Total UNDER 189 -110 (risk 3 to win 2.7)

The suddenly hot T-Wolves, who had five wins as of January 8, have added five more to the win column in their last seven. After allowing 100+ points in 9-of-10 games, the T-Wolves have suddenly discovered defense, as they have held their last five opponents to an average of just 85.6 points per game. Minnesota has averaged just 94 ppg on the season, but the last five defensive efforts have also curtailed scoring as they have scored just 91.2 ppg in their last five. Houston knows a little about playing defense themselves as they bring the No. 5 rated NBA defense to Minnesota that also allows only 43.7% shooting - second best in the NBA. See this one low-scoring with the T-Wolves feeling good and finally defending against a defensive-minded Houston team.

Game: Charlotte at Phoenix (9:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 3 units on Phoenix -14.5 (-110) (risk 3 to win 2.7)

Phoenix has it going right now, winners of seven of their last nine, along with seven covers. They have dispatched the weaker opponents at home, beating Atlanta by 33, New Jersey by 24 and Minnesota by 20 points. They have been at their best off a loss to a .500+ team where they have been 7-0 SU and 5-2 ATS in their next game. Charlotte is getting blown-out against up-tempo road teams like Denver and Golden State and will be playing with road-weary legs. Phoenix has had three days off for the first time all season and will be running all night. Big spread, but Phoenix in a rout!

NBA:

5 Unit Black Magic NBA Stunner of the Month on Minnesota Timberwolves +5.5

The Minnesota Timberwolves are coming around as of late and we will ride them to a stunning victory over the Houston Rockets tonight. Minnesota is completely healthy and showing what they can do when this is the case. The Timberwolves have won 5 out of their last 7 games and will improve to 3-0 on its 5-game homestand Monday against the Rockets. Houston is just 1-9 ATS off 2 or more consecutive road wins over the last 2 seasons. Minnesota catches the Rockets in a great spot as they will overlook the Timberwolves Monday. Cash in with the Timberwolves as the underdog.

3 Unit Sharp Play on Hawks/76ers UNDER 189.5

This will be an ugly game for the offensive-minded to be watching Monday. The UNDER is the best bet in this game due to the fact that these teams play defense first and offense second. Neither team shoots the 3-pointer very well. Atlanta is the NBA?s worst 3-point shooting team at just 31% in home games. The 76ers shoot just 32% from deep this season. Long possessions deep into the shot clock can be expected, favoring the UNDER tremendously. The Hawks and 76ers combined for just 165 points in their only meeting of the season back in December. A similar result will be seen tonight. Cash in with the UNDER 189.5 points.

NCAA Basketball:

4 Unit Big Monday Beatdown on Gonzaga +3

Gonzaga is catching points and they shouldn?t be. Gonzaga is 23-3 straight up against St. Mary?s since 1997. Yes, this is a much better St. Mary?s ball club this year. But, the Zags are as strong as they have been in a couple years as well now that everyone is finally healthy. The Zags played Memphis, the nations #1 team, down to the wire on the road just a couple games back. They are not far from being considered a National Title contender, and we feel they actually are. Gonzaga is 13-3 ATS in road games after scoring 85 points or more over the last 3 seasons.

Game: N C- Greensboro at Georgia Southern (7:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: N C- Greensboro +2.5 (-110)

The Spartans have now gone 10-2 in their last 12 game and are playing with confidence. Kyle Hines has been a dominating player lately. He has averaged 22 points per game, 10.7 rebounds per game and 2.3 blocks per game over his last six outings. Hines had a sub-par game against Georgia Southern earlier, but the Spartans still won by 12. Georgia Southern loaded up its early schedule resulting in a 9-2 start, but has since been 5-6, which shows that they aren't as good as perhaps their record would indicate. Spartans have the edge here, so we will grab the points with a live dog.

Game: Houston at Minnesota (8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: Game Total UNDER 189 -110

The suddenly hot T-Wolves, who had five wins as of January 8, have added five more to the win column in their last seven. 10 Dime

LOUISVILLE

Take Louisville as the small road dog tonight over Marquette.

There?s no question Marquette has been tough at home this year, but Rick Pitino?s Cardinals have been a pretty good road bet themselves.

Louisville is 11-3-1 ATS in its last 15 road games and 6-2-1 ATS in its last nine overall. The Cardinals also boast a strong 22-8-2 ATS mark in their last 32 Big East games.

Louisville has also won five of the last six meetings with Marquette, going 3-1 ATS in the last four.

The Cardinals match up well with the Golden Eagles, and to be honest with you I don?t trust Marquette?s inconsistent perimeter game with Dominic James and Jerel McNeal.

Take the points with Louisville as they grab the cash over Marquette.

5 Dime

MAGIC

Take the Magic as the home chalk tonight over the Mavericks.

Dallas is only 1-5 ATS in the second of back-to-back matchups. Dirk Nowitzki is putting up some solid numbers, but he?s going to have his hands full underneath with Dwight Howard.

Orlando is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings with Dallas, and the Mavericks are just 2-7 ATS in their last nine versus the NBA Southeast.

Take Orlando as the home chalk as they grab the win and cover.
