TULANE over *Utep...Surging Tulane is on a 4-game win streak (before facing Rice Feb. 2), and Green Wave is showing steady growth
under astute 3rd-year HC Dave Dickerson. Hence, compelled to invest against G-driven UTEP, dealing with same matchup problems in paint
that existed in 92-67 thumping in New Orleans LY. Watch Green Wave?s ?Bruise Brothers,? 6-7, 250 sr. F Gomez (14 ppg, 6 rpg) & 6-7, 260
jr. C Louisme (11 ppg, 6 rpg) get Miners over-eager 6-9 F Ramalho (disqualified in 6 of last 14 games!) in quick foul trouble.

TULANE 73 - *Utep 66 RATING - 11

*MISSISSIPPI STATE over Alabama...Don?t look now, but SEC?s (and maybe nation?s) hottest team in January has been MSU, which is flying
with 9-game win streak thru Jan. 29. Expect pattern to continue as long as athletic Bulldogs continue to set tenor on defensive end, where
flyswatting 6-9 soph Varnado leads nation with 5.1 blocks pg, while rugged 6-4 jr. G Gordon overpowers smaller backcourt foes (as he did
when scoring 24 vs. Bama in MSU?s 10-point win Jan. 19). SEC scouts report situation becoming dicey for Tide HC Gottfried, with Bama?s
inconsistencies possibly putting job his in jeopardy.

*MISSISSIPPI STATE 86 - Alabama 64 RATING - 10

Miami Heat +16 over Detroit Pistons

At 7:35 pm, our complimentary selection is on the Miami Heat. Certainly, the most disappointing NBA team this season has been Pat Riley's Miami Heat. Though just two years removed from winning the NBA Title, Dwayne Wade & Co. have won just nine of their 37 games this season, and have lost 19 of 20 overall (with just a 2-point home win over Indiana 11 days ago as their only victory). And it just keeps on getting worse (though help will be on the way in the form of Shawn Marion). In its last game, Miami fell behind Toronto by 23 points in the first quarter en route to a 114-82 loss, its worst of the season. But if any team is going to bring out the best from Miami, it's their old rivals from the 2004 and 2005 seasons, the Detroit Pistons. These two teams met on November 1, in the season opener, and Detroit won 91-80 at Miami. But the Heat were without Wade in that game, and Wade's been brilliant against Detroit over the years. In his last five games against the Pistons, Wade has averaged 26.6 ppg, and Miami also falls into a 189-112 ATS system of mine that plays on certain rested, double digit road underdogs with same-season revenge against a conference foe. Look for the Heat to play at a high level tonight and stay close with their rival. Take the points with Miami. Good luck, as always...Al McMordie.
