Thursday's Plays...

15 Dime ?

SPURS

Take the Spurs minus the points tonight as they attempt to stave off elimination against the Hornets.

The home team has won every game in this series, all by double-digits. I don?t see any reason to buck that trend tonight, not with the Spurs backs against the wall.

The home team is on a 7-0 SUATS run in this series dating back to the regular season. Eight of the nine total meetings have been double-digit blowouts, with the average margin of victory being 17.7 ppg.

The Spurs are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six home games, winning by 11 and 20 points respectively in Games 3 and 4 of this playoff series.

The Hornets are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games and are just 1-10 ATS in their last 11 Thursday games.

I don?t see the defending champs going down without a fight, so take the Spurs minus the points as they force a Game 7 with the win and cover.

10 Dime ?

MARLINS (With Miller as listed pitcher)

Take the Marlins for the road win tonight over the Reds.

Cincinnati may have won the game last night, but they blew a 6-0 lead in the 9th inning before pulling it out in the 10th.

The Marlins have been one of the surprise teams in the league this year, as their young players have matured quicker than anticipated.

One of those players is Andrew Miller, who came over in the Dontrelle Willis-Miguel Cabrera trade with Detroit.

Miller has settled into a groove after a rough start to the season. The left-hander is 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA over his last three games and is coming off his best start of the season. Miller pitched seven shutout innings, walking one and striking out seven at Washington on Saturday.

Miller should be able to neutralize the left-handed pop in the Reds? lineup tonight.

Besides, Cincinnati is a team in disarray right now anyway. Ken Griffey Jr. is falling off, they aren?t getting the hitting they used to and they even batted out of order on Sunday.

Take the Marlins as they grab the road win.

5 Dime ?

CARDINALS (With Pineiro as listed pitcher)

Take the Cardinals this afternoon for the home win over the Pirates.

Joel Pineiro will start for St. Louis and he?s had good success against the Bucs.

The right-hander is 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA in three career starts against Pittsburgh, including a seven-inning effort this year in which he gave up just one earned run.

The Pirates briefly closed within the magical .500 mark, but given their past history they?re due to take a serious nose dive which will quell any hopes of breaking their consecutive losing seasons streak.

Ian Snell will start for the Pirates and he is the ace of the staff, but his control has been erratic this year and he?s not racking up the strikeouts like he did the last two seasons.

Take the Cardinals as they grab the home win.

had a winner yesterday with the Chicago White Sox coming in for a nice underdog 3* winner. Let's use this afternoon play today for hopefully another winner.

Houston/San Francisco Under 8 +1.06 (4 Unit Play) - I like this game Under today for a variety of reasons so let's start with the weather. Although I am not aware of how the ball is affected in warm weather at San Fran the temperature is supposed to be 83 degrees and sunny which I would think in the Bay Area would make the ball heavy and not travel as well. The wind is also blowing in from left field at 8 MPH so that should help as well. On SportsCenter today they mentioned that Miguel Tejada should also receive the day off as well for the first time this year. The pitchers for today's games have strong records as Sampson is pitching on the road where he has composed a 3.24 ERA in 25 innings of work and has struck out 10 while walking only 4 compiling a 1.12 WHIP. Lincecum for the Giants has been strong all year and at starts at S. Fran has a 2.67 ERA in 27 innings of work striking out 30 batters while walking only 4 compiling a 1.07 WHIP. The factor that solidified this play is that Sampson has started twice against San Fran and both games went Under the total while Lincecum has started twice against the Astros and both games went Under. The home plate umpire for today's game is Bruce Dreckman who is 2-4 to the Under so far this year so I like this game Under today.

2:20 pm
(DAY GAME!)...
Chicago Cubs (Dempster) -145 over San Diego (Maddux)
This has been a big comeback year for veteran Ryan Dempster, who has emerged as the #2 starter for Chicago (+$375, 2.76 ERA
in eight starts). He looks like a solid choice vs. the beleaguered Padres (-$1,320 overall), who are averaging a pitiful 3.3 runs per game vs. righthanders. The Cubs are profitable here
at Wrigley Field (+$525) and their offense generates an impressive 5.7 runs per game. Too many weapons for Greg Maddux and the anemic San Diego attack to overcome.

UNDER 9
NY Yankees at Tampa Bay

Today's official formula qualifiers are above, but in this one...''We're going to give him another shot,'' manager Joe Giradi has told the New York Times of today's starter Kennedy. ''He's got a chance to get it rolling.'' One major reason that Kennedy has that chance to do well is that today's 4:05 pm start time puts both teams up against a tight travel schedule when they have to fly to New York and Cincinnati afterwards in time for proper beddy-bye rest. Anything near the plate is a strike today, putting batters in the unfavorable position of either swinging at junk early, or swinging behind in the count later. Scott Kazmir is a lefty and the Yankees haven't been able to touch that kind lately. Against all lefties, New York is hitting .237 and Kazmir is better than average. Fay-Rod and Posada still out of the Yankees lineup. Posada was hitting .471 against Kazmir. The Yankees as a group are hitting .217 against him (Derek Jeter, .100), with 46 strikeouts in 152 At-Bats.

* CLOSE CALL
OVER 184
New Orleans at San Antonio

Tyson Chandler frequently played Tim Duncan straight-up with no doubling help in Game 5, and San Antonio shot 37% overall. On the road with the Spurs trailing in the series 2-3, Tyson Chandler will have two fouls against him in the first quarter, and the Spurs will have a clearer path to the inside and other stuff will fall into place.

Thursday NBA Analysis

SAN ANTONIO (-7/184 total) vs New Orleans
The home team is 5-0 ATS in this series, but the Spurs should not be favored by 7 points in this game given that home court advantage in the playoffs is 4.2 points historically and that New Orleans is at least a point better than the Spurs on a neutral court (so San Antonio by 3 is fair line). However, the Spurs do apply to a solid 51-19-4 ATS situation and a 26-4-2 ATS subset of that situation applies. The line has been adjusted for the good situation that the Spurs are in and the negative line value cancels out the situation, so I have no opinion on the side, but I?ll lean with the Under at 183 points or more.

(2) New Orleans Hornets (3-2) at (3) San Antonio Spurs (2-3)

The Hornets have dropped nine of the last 10 games in San Antonio, going 3-6 ATS. Look for the Spurs to tie this series tonight back on their home court. The home team has won all five games in this playoff series and the favorite is 5-0 against the spread.

San Antonio Spurs

Atlanta Braves (20-19) at Philadelphia Phillies (22-19), 7:05 p.m.
Atlanta - Chuck James (2-2, 7.58) Philadelphia - Cole Hamels (4-3, 3.36)

The Braves have been a horror away from home, 6-15 this season, but Atlanta' Chuck James has played well against the Phillies. The southpaw is 2-0 with a 4.08 ERA in seven career appearances, including 6 starts against Philadelphia. The Braves have won four of James' last five starts versus the Phillies.

Take Arizona !
The struggling Rockies have dropped five of their last six games overall and seven of its last eight versus the Diamondbacks.
Colorado will send Aaron Cook (6-1, 2.26 ERA) to the mound. The right-hander has won six straight thus far this year and is 5-3 with a 5.09 ERA in 16 appearances, including 14 starts against the Diamondbacks. Arizona counters with Brandon Webb (8-0, 2.41). The right-hander has won all eight starts this season and is 10-7 with a 3.69 ERA, in 23 career appearances versus the Rockies.

Take the Diamondbacks at home with Brandon Webb at the controls. Colorado has lost five of their last six games on the road, four of the last five at Chase Field and dropped six of Cook's last eight starts versus Arizona.
